2 players return, 4-2-3-1: Man Utd predicted XI to face Newcastle

Manchester United are in action at St James’ Park on Sunday to take on struggling Newcastle United.

Rafa Benitez’s side have not won in the Premier League since New Year’s Day, recording three 1-1 draws and two losses.  We came from behind to win 4-1 in the reverse fixture back in November.

We start the weekend five points ahead of Liverpool who are down in third, looking to finish the season strongly.

Here is the team that I think Jose Mourinho will select against Newcastle:

Goalkeeper: David de Gea

Our first choice goalkeeper has played every minute in the Premier League this season and kept a league-high 15th clean sheet versus Huddersfield Town last weekend.

Defence: Antonio Valencia, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Luke Shaw

With Eric Bailly sidelined this is Jose Mourinho’s preferred back four.  Luke Shaw has displaced Ashley Young at left-back over the past two months and should keep his place in the starting lineup up North on Sunday.  Phil Jones missed the win over Huddersfield last weekend due to illness but should be available again to Mourinho for this game.  He’ll reunited with Chris Smalling in central defence with captain Antonio Valencia on the right.

Midfield: Paul Pogbe, Nemanja Matic; Juan Mata, Jesse Lingard, Alexis Sanchez

Paul Pogba was dropped to the bench against Huddersfield but you can expect the French star to be back in the starting lineup at St James’ Park.  Mourinho has reverted back to a 4-2-3-1 in our past two games so Pogba can be expected to partner Nemanja Matic in front of the back four.  With Marcus Rashford being a doubt, Juan Mata should start on the right wing again as Alexis Sanchez has started his three games for us down the left wing since joining from Arsenal last month.  Jesse Lingard has been in good form  in the number 10 role for the past six weeks or so.

Striker: Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian striker opened the scoring last time out and can be expected to remain up front for this one.  Anthony Martial and Rashford are both backup options in this role and down the wings, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic still sidelined.

Here’s how our team looks on paper:

  1. Why Man U is playing Pogba and Matic in middle? They need either Herrera or the young Mc to give Pogba more freedom. Line up: 4-2-1-3 should be better.

  2. Please Man United Official You Should Advice Morinho To Ginger Our Players For The UEFA Champion Clash

  3. Always Anthony Martial should in starting X1. Most talented player at United !

  4. you don’t understand that #Pogba can’t play in 2 defensive midfielders. better play Scott or Herrara. But if you suggest Pogba to play then Lingard will be benched

  5. Martial should have more playing time from the right flank. Mata n Jese should come in as sub. We need to attack from every side. Thanks

  6. Martial for Mata,Herrera in Pogba position then pogba for Lingard at the AMF…Lingard and Mata can come in as sub and still make a huge impact…

  7. i wish jose m would have give time to martial to play because he is talented player with out him game is boring

    • Man u have problem of defences why morinho u can’t buy new deffenders so try and try put more effort if not we need change u as boss

  8. Pogback! United should consolidate their 2nd position by beating Newcastle on Sunday match. Win is not negotiable.

  9. Always Martial due to his talented skills and drive , always a problem for defenders.

  10. pogba should play on the left hand side of a three midfield with a formation of 4-3-3 and martial should replace Mata on the wing

  11. mourinho should play carrick & matic or Herrera plus pogba on a MD of 3 upfront Sanchez lukaku & martial..
also mourinho u ought 2 drop lukaku coz sometimes he’s a flop to the team

  12. Mourinho please try this, martial left, Paul and Alex right. with lukaku leading the line. with 4-2-3-1 midfield i chose Matic and Herrera, defend put Shaw rojo smalling Valencia.

  15. Common sense all says it, that Pogba in front of MC & Ander (start). Martial on the right flank

  16. The truth is that Jose should know dat marshal is a better attacking player to Alexis from d left wing, no doubt Alexis is a g8 but, should be played behind oluku lukaku, Mata should retain his place at the right wing, while young lad should be allowed to build a rocky partnership with matic at the back four, pls Jose free my pogba to do the damage, stop limiting his potential at DM role pls, we lost to tothenham bcos marshal was wrongly featured, Jose take note!

  17. I am sure the fans are right in choosing Martial sd the player of the months. The Manager should take the queue. So it means thatMata should be replaced instead. Lingard should be another untouchable for us.

  18. I think mourinho should drop smaling if Rojo is OK at least Rojones combnation wll bore fruits…
