Wembley glory or European misery for United this time?

For the second year running the Champions League draw spared Manchester United tough opponents, with the Reds joined in group H by Portuguese side Braga, Turkish giants Galatasaray and Romanian club CFR Cluj.

The Tactics Board- MUFC 3-2 Fulham: A Tale of Two Halves

Manchester United recovered from an opening day loss to Everton with a 3-2 win over visiting Fulham. Sir Alex Ferguson made changes after the disappointing first game, including dropping Wayne Rooney to the bench, while Van Persie gets his first club start. Meanwhile, Fulham came into the game after beating Norwich City 5-0 to open the season. An impressive performance, especially considering one of the club’s best player, Clint Dempsey, has been missing while trying to push through a transfer.

After giving up an early goal, United’s attack looked impressive. They moved the ball around the pitch quickly, linking up with smart runs off the ball by the players up front. United looked in control of the game until Moussa Dembele started to use his size and strength to out muscle the Red Devils in the midfield. This performance, and a sloppy goalkeeping error that resulted in an own goal made the end of this game more stressful than it should have been for Manchester United. Continue reading

The Tactics Board – United catch Merseyside Blues

The Premier League season opened for Manchester United this season with a challenging visit to Goodison Park to face a tough Everton squad. Many Red fans will remember our last game against Everton, a 4-4 draw that seemed to cost the Red Devils their 20th league championship. This game was highly anticipated by most people to see how Sir Alex Ferguson would play his squad after the addition of 29-year old Dutch striker Robin Van Persie from Arsenal. Unfortunately for most fans, Van Persie started the game on the bench and United played with Rooney and Welbeck on the field. United’s offense struggled at times against a well-disciplined Everton defense, while defensively the Red Devils had the same problem they had in the game last season: a tall, powerful Belgian sporting an afro named Marouane Fellaini. What’s your greatest ever European match?

Tag: RedRants Feature @ 10:08 am

As a United fan old enough to remember the much fabled and often talked-about United v Barcelona match at Old Trafford in 1984, it’s difficult to offer any other game to challenge it as the greatest ever European match especially as I was there to witness it and be part of the electric atmosphere that will arguably never be replicated.

Older Reds will surely have other matches in mind like Wembley ’68 or the home leg of the semi-final versus Real Madrid in the same year.

Younger Reds could suggest Rooney’s debut, the Roma demolition or more recently Scholes’ volleyed winner against Barcelona in ’08 to send United to a Moscow final with Chelsea. What’s yours?

This collection (available to buy via Amazon) of UEFA Great Matches of European Football doesn’t solely concentrate on United unfortunately, but it does start with us and the greatest, probably most memorable comeback of all-time……you know it, Barcelona ’99.

United feel the Blues at Goodison

Tag: Manchester United,Match Reports @ 11:23 pm

Manchester United’s season got off to a bad start as the Reds succumbed 1-0 to Everton at Goodison Park. Marouane Fellaini headed the winner after 57 minutes and not even the introduction of new signing Robin Van Persie with 23 minutes to play was enough to give United a way back into the contest.

Despite all the talk being about Van Persie since he joined from Arsenal in a £24m move, the Dutchman started on the bench as Sir Alex Ferguson chose Danny Welbeck and Wayne Rooney up front, supported by a midfield comprising Paul Scholes, Tom Cleverley, Nani and debutant Shinij Kagawa.

Matchday Live: Everton v. Manchester United

After the heart-wrenching way last season ended for all associated with Manchester United, the new season couldn’t get here fast enough.

It hasn’t been easy to relive the end of last season countless times through adverts, montages, and other unwelcome but unavoidable reminders, and reliving them many more times throughout this season won’t be easy either.

However, optimism that last season’s bad memories can be put in the back of the mind should be high. Sure, United haven’t signed that midfielder that many feel is required, and big-money targets Eden Hazard and Lucas Moura opted for other options, but the signings of two top talents in Japanese star Shinji Kagawa and one Robin van Persie have signaled some serious intent and generated a great deal of excitement and anticipation ahead of tonight’s season-opening visit to Everton.

United: Season Preview – Pre RvP! Does his arrival alter things?

Tag: Manchester United @ 12:15 pm

Three months ago Manchester United were denied a 20th league title in the most cruel of fashion as Sergio Aguero slotted the ball behind Paddy Kenny sending the blue half of Manchester into raptures, while the other half wished the grounds would come open and swallow them.

City’s comeback might have secured the title in front of a worldwide audience – much to the delight of Sky Sports’, no doubt – but United’s title challenge had long lost momentum by the last weekend of the season as they stumbled to defeat against Wigan and dilapidated a two-goal advantage against Everton.
