United turned down World Cup star

James RodriguezManchester United turned down the opportunity to sign Colombia star James Rodriguez for as little as £5m a couple of seasons ago, preferring instead to pursuit other options and, to add insult to injury, ended up signing Bebe – £2m more expensive than Rodriguez and with a fraction of the talent.

United were first approached by intermediaries in 2010, the Guardian reports, when Rodriguez, 18 at the time, was carving out a reputation for himself at Club Atletico Banfield in the Argentine’s first division, having made his professional debut a year earlier when he became the youngest ever foreigner to play in the Argentine top-flight.

Tag: Transfer Rumours @ 10:45 am

stefan-de-vrij_1Manchester United look to have clinched their third deal of the summer, with Holland centre-back Stefan De Vrij thought to have agreed a move to Old Trafford in a deal worth £8m.

With United looking to fill the gap left by the departures of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala and Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels were linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer but it looks as if Louis Van Gaal has instead opted for the Feyenoord defender.

Van Gaal and United keen on former City man

Tag: Transfer Rumours @ 10:10 am

53a6c1461bc4b_nigelFormer Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong could be set for a return to the Premier League, with reports on both the English and Italian media suggesting Louis Van Gaal has been so impressed with the 29-year-old’s performances at the World Cup that he’s looking to bring the midfielder to Old Trafford this summer.

De Jong is the latest Dutchman to be linked with a move to Old Trafford and Italian sports newspaper Corriere dello Sport last week claimed the 29-year-old had emerged a surprise target for United, while today’s Daily Express confirms United are set to open talks with AC Milan.

World Cup predictions: Netherlands, France and Belgium to win

Tag: Match Preview,Opinion Piece @ 8:00 am

For United fans – once the England mess is cleared away – the World Cup has been as interesting from a managerial standpoint as it has been from a players standpoint.

With United manager Louis van Gaal taking Netherlands to the Round of 16, Netherlands v Mexico will be watched for LvG’s tactical approach to the game more than it’ll be appreciated for the talents of United strikers Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez.

In fact, with Manchester United still looking to sign a central defender, fans will be watching Netherlands’s Bruno Martins Indi with a lot of interest too.

The Dutch are favourites against a Mexico side that’s only met expectations by qualifying for the group stages, and how these two teams more comfortable on the counter play will be interesting to watch.

The Sunday game isn’t the only one with United players involved – Patrice Evra will start for France in their game against Nigeria and Marouane Fellaini is expected to start (with Adnan Januzaj on the bench?) for Belgium in their game against the USA.

France were unimpressive in their 0-0 draw against 10-man Ecuador in their final group game, however they should eb a different prospect altogether when it comes to Nigeria. Evra’s ability to create chances from the left flank will be important considering Nigeria have kept two clean sheets so far in this World Cup.

For Belgium, Fellaini will be crucial against a fast and aggressive USA team, and if he can lead Belgium to the quarters it will only bode well for United – we need him playing at his best, and he has seemed to grow in confidence in this World Cup.

Predictions: Netherlands, France and Beligum to win. Good odds on this acca if you’re looking for a betting tip. Also, RvP to score.

Tag: Academy,Manchester United News @ 11:19 am

65433.3Nicky Butt is expected to remain as Manchester United as a coach once the Louis Van Gaal era finally gets underway in its earnest, with the former United midfielder set to continue his role with the club’s academy.

A product of the Class of ’92, Butt will continue to manage the Under-19 side in the UEFA Youth League and he’ll also continue to work alongside Warren Joyce with the Under-21 side, after having being temporarily promoted to the first team fold by Ryan Giggs when the Welshman replaced David Moyes for the last four games of last season.

United’s second signing imminent

Tag: Transfer Rumours @ 8:52 am

luke shawLuke Shaw is poised to become a Manchester United by the end of the week after he passed a medical on Thursday night ahead of a £27m deal which will bring the Southampton left-back to Old Trafford this summer.

Having announced the signing of Ander Herrera for £29m on Thursday, United look to have finally kickstarted the long-awaited revolution that had been anticipated since Louis Van Gaal was appointed manager before the World Cup and, so far at least, United seem to have learnt some valuable lessons from last summer’s fiasco.

United confirm first signing

Tag: Manchester United News @ 5:10 pm

photoManchester United have confirmed the arrival of Ander Herrera from Athletic Bilbao on a four-year deal with an option for a fifth, after triggering the Spaniard’s buy-out clause.

United’s interest in the 24-year-old midfielder had unexpectedly resurfaced during the week and Herrera underwent a medical at Carrington yesterday afternoon, but the move looked to have stalled this morning, as Athletic Bilbao issued a statement in which they announced a £28.8m offer from United had been rejected.
