All Smoke, Little Fire on the Transfer Front
The cynical among us have come to accept this. The optimistic claim this is a smokescreen.
Either which way you look at it, at the moment there is no transfer activity to report. There’s little one can update the blog with, other than “Nothing new to report on the transfer front.”
Of course, if one considers the non-football aspect of the club, then there’s plenty to talk about.
Today, Panorama will air (on BBC for UK viewers) a documentary on the Glazer family, their ownership, the financial situation at the club. Some feelers are already all over the media with BBC prominently giving us bullet points on what to expect today. The Guardian, led by David Conn, also has a couple of lead stories on the amount of debt the Glazer family have saddled themselves with — not just the club, but also their own family in their other business ventures in America; most notably, their failing strip mall business.
From one depressing thought back to another, albeit far less, depressing thought: our transfer business this season has included Javier Hernandez and Chris Smalling, but it’s debatable what role they will play this season.
Of immediate concern is the midfield which badly needs work. We have been linked with Joe Cole, Rafael van der Vaart, and today, with Lassanna Diarra. I would rule Joe Cole out simply because I doubt we’d ever pay £120,000/week for an injury-afflicted 28-year old. While he would just be an excellent addition to the starting XI, the wages just don’t justify the signing, given our current financial situation (and despite this being a free transfer).
Rafael van der Vaart, on the other hand, is a player I like. Career blighted by injuries, he could be a quality addition to our midfield, and given a longer run than afforded at Real Madrid he would be a wonderful signing.
Lassanna Diarra is also a much better defensive midfielder than what we have at the moment; assuming Hargreaves’ continues to have a stop-start season. His attitude problems have dogged him in the past. The rumours doing the rounds involves his past clashes with Mourinho and lack of playing time that saw him transferred out of Chelsea.
This would appear cliched to say that we must wait and watch, but really we can’t do much. My suggestion: watch the World Cup, enjoy it to the fullest, and treat any positive activity on the club’s transfer front a bonus. It’s a good thing the World Cup is around to take our mind off all things Manchester United. In the coming days, I’ll probably share a few links to sites you must follow during the World Cup.

@Grognard: Acc to Daily Mail:
Argentina playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme is considering a move to West Ham United.
The gifted 31-year-old is out of contract at Boca Juniors and has stalled on an expected move to Brazilian side Flamengo because of a raft of interest from South American and European sides.
Renewing with his current side is not out of the question, but Riquelme is also said to have an offer from a second, unnamed English side.
The former Villarreal star almost signed for Everton three years ago, but instead clinched a move from Spain back to his homeland.
Fiery Riquelme missed out on Argentina’s World Cup party after a clash with coach Diego Maradona.
Brazilian sides Cruzeiro and Flamengo are also interested, as are Mexico’s Atlas, and Buenos Aires side Racing Club de Avellaneda.
Flamengo are believed to have offered him a two-and-a-half year deal worth £45,000 a week.

@Redrich: Capello and England will eventually have to show some courage and realize that the numbers game in creating a starting eleven sometimes means that a world class player will have to sit the bench. Jeez, Aguero and Milito are both on the bench for Argentina. Diego sits the pine for Brazil. Sometimes a club lacks depth in many positions but is over saturated at one. There is not shame in sitting either Lampard or Gerrard down as they have shown an inability and unwillingness to conform to a system and to play alongside each other in a non selfish manner. Until an English manager finds the courage to bench one of them, they are prone to repeat the same BS over and over again.
One of the great things about the German team is there are no stars. All great players but no selfish ego’s that superstar status brings. England have a few too many superstars that are only concerned with personal glory.

@Owen: I love Riquelme but I honestly cannot see him ever coming to England. He is too stubborn and too old school to make that kind of cultural move this late in his career. He isn’t about to learn English and i seriously doubt he would want to place himself in that kind of environment. A move to Spanish or Italian club is much more believable. Knowing Fergie he has placed him on his list of old washed up talent that is affordable.

@RMJ: I still think that the system they use is better suited for Huntellar at the top as a lone striker. I’d prefer van Persie on the right side cutting in and using his left foot. For me Kuyt would be on the bench. Yes he is a workaholic but unlike many Brits who love that kind of blue collar shite, I am not one of them. I prefer talent and skill on the ball. Holland’s lineup is fin except that Robben and Huntelaar were not in the lineup and Kuyt and van Persie were. Finally, van der Vaart is a great player but I have noticed that he disappears a lot when playing next to Scheijder who is a superior player to him. When Scheijder is not around van der Vaart plays very well.

@RMJ: I would agree with you mate, but we were discussing who should be picked to play out of the squad we have out there! Brown isn’t part of that pool of players. Out of those players Dawson and Upson are better than the scouser would be centre half – that is all that was being said! Capeche?

There’s another individual on here who cares far too much about what the individual he is always on about says in his assessment of how he sees things, especially if he happens to see these things differently to the person whose is always harping on about other people getting under his skin, and then demands respect as a grown up. Those of you who understand riddles work it out for yourself. Most of you have not too recently got under said persons skin! I couldn’t give a monkeys about his overinflated ego. Now go cry to Red Ranter like you always do to ban me – you sad sap!

@CraigMc: Seriously mate, if you want to have a go at me, at least say it in English.
I’m not trying to insult you but I have no idea what you are on about? The fact is you do like digging the knife in my back any chance you get because you are being a bit vindictive and vicious. But that’s Ok because as much as you cannot stand me, I really don’t mind you. In fact if truth be known, I rather like you mate. I’d just prefer that you insulted the teams and players I cheer for like Germany and Bayern to my face rather than throw digs directed at me through other people. It smells of cowardice and from what I know of you, you’re no coward, so man up, grab some balls and stop your silent treatment towards me and the insults about my ego and personality. I do have an inflated ego and I am old school in much of my thinking but last time I looked, that wasn’t illegal.
Truth be known, I miss our conversations when we were friendly to each other. How it got like this I don’t know and I have to say I don’t like it and it’s not good for the blog. So I’ll man up and apologize for my part in it. I think it’s time we made peace. Life’ too short to carry animosity over stupid stuff. After all, we are both United fans and so we have a lot more in common than not.

I haven’t had problems with anyone on here for some long time now, apart from said person. I get along just fine with the majority of folk on here, and we have our different opinions and debate them. In fact the only ones I don’t get along with is Mr “always right!”, and you RR. Everyone else I find quite amiable and yes we banter back and forth, and nobody has complained to me about anything I said in such a long time. Maybe it is just you across the other side of the atlantic that finds and picks fault with everything. Do I like you and your mate Grognard – NO I DONT! And I am sure the feeling is mutual, but I visited this blog for the people I do enjoy talking with, and its your prerogative whether in view of what I have said you want to do something about that – either way RR I just don’t care!

. I am just reading on Daily Mail site that Man United have claimed victory over Green and Gold campaigners where season tickets sales are concerned, or so they say! What galls me is that they have the frigging nerve to say that they are fighting the fans efforts and sadness at the state of what used to be our football club, by looking to the money coming in. I wonder if this is just again a pack of lies, because IF we are doing okay with ticket sales etc etc, then why is Fergie foraging around the bargain basements of football to pull in all the dregs on the cheap? Manchester United football club, the retirement stud ground for finished, washed up thoroughbred players who are at the end of their careers! United fans who are willing to pay thru their noses still for this shit, well saddest bunch of saps in England etc.

I was just listening to the news Owen, and our prime minister telling the British people to expect a lot more casualties among our troops in Afghanistan this summer. I mean when I hear things like that, it puts everything else including football and spoilt footballers into perspective doesn’t it. Its not just Britsh and US soldiers dying though is it, soldiers fighting for lost causes (in my opinion) all over the world. Why the fuck can’t folk live in peace with one another. But no its wars wherever you look. Our government has a lt to answer for, wiping out a good proportion of our upcoming generation by the sounds of it. And for what mate – for fucking what?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1286642/Manchester-United-claim-victory-Green-Gold-campaign-pleasing-season-ticket-renewal-figures.html
Doesnt seem to carry any official quotes, just the usual drivel you expect from the press. Big headline, no quotes to back it up except “club insiders say”. Man its pathetic.
Everything im hearing from manchester from relatives is how boycotting has reached absolutely massive levels.
My uncle has been going to games every week pretty much since the early 80s but he and the rest of his mates have all decided to not renew.
From everything i have read and heard it is definitely the majority who are boycotting, my only fear is whilst we have huge numbers of fans boycotting, others will take their place.
Im sorry but for a guy to give up his ST for a cause i think we can all agree is for the best interests of the club, for some other asshole to take his seat and continue to give the glazers money just annoys me.
Im sorry but these fans are the ones saying us G&G supporters arent real fans because we encourage boycotts and yet they dont seem to realise they are causing more harm than good by continuing to give the glazers money. We give up something we love, more than willing to go through a few lean years to get the glazers out because we believe long term it is for the best, and they have the gaul to call us unloyal fans. Pathetic.
What gets me aswell is the atmosphere is just going to get worse. Its already pretty dead, but without die hard fans like yourself, me, stephen and thelifelong fans the place will just be like a library. Who is going to take their seats, some day tripper who is a glory hunter, some foreigner, a guy in a suit. Man i cant even begin to imagine just how shit it will be next season.
As you say the football isnt even that great anymore so why fans are so eager to piss on the man who gave up his seat for them i will never know.
Also going back to the atricle am i the only one who thinks the glazers and gill are treating this like a game.
Were boycotting, g&g 1-0. Glazers: We will easily fill OT, 1-1.
Its pathetic, they have treated us loyal fans like shit and yet still the sheeple continue to come and put money in their pockets.
Even if they sell out their ST allocation and bring in more of the pro glazers fansdo they simply think we are gonna go away. Us mancs may be alot of things but we are not quitters, we are hard as fu**in nails and will not stop our protests until the glazers are gone. The sooner they and gill get that the sooner things move on.

CraigMc, those are some very tactically astute observations. It just shows how predictable England are that we can be neutralised so easily.
Unfortunately Capello all his career has played a 4-4-2 and is very old school and I honestly don’t think he is that tactically savvy. He is from the man motivating school of coaches and unfortunately that only gets you so far especially when you have undisciplined English players who don’t follow orders.
The problem for Capello is that he was completely thrown by Barry’s injury so his preferred tactics of playing Gerrard on the left and Lampard and Barry in the middle was impossible. So he picks the sort of team Sven would have picked even though everyone knows Gerrard and Lampard don’t play well together.
Capello is like all England Managers. No Plan B.
He is no tactician and that is what is going to cost us. Our 4-4-2 is too predictable and may work against the substandard teams we faced in qualifying but won’t cut it against the top teams and I dont think Capello is flexible enough to try anything different.
It is so obvious that the moment we come up against a team like Germany, Spain or Brazil we will get outpassed and then slowly strangled to death.

@colver: I think it’s too early to comment upon a possible plan B, mate. Capello, tactically, is a better manager than many in this tournament. Lets give him a chance and see what he does.
However, I do feel that he fell foul to the usual English selection trait of choosing the most popular players, instead of putting together a team that can actually play with one another.
That back line is an embarrassment, though, and will probably end up being their downfall.

@tonymontanna4united: Couldn’t have put it better myself Tony, and I agree with your sentiments completely! It is galling mate to see what all is happening at our once beloved club. Perhaps some folk won’t see it, or will refuse to see it, until it is so far gone, that they won’t be able to help but recognise in the end. Anyway, we will have to wait and see what MUST have to say about the latest reportings from OT re season ticket sales. I think we also have to be a bit cautionary mate, because the press bring forward their own sensational headlines, like Manchester United have won the war against the green and gold campaign, because it suits their aims to inflame the animosity between fans taking a stand and the club. So lets wait and see what MUST come up with!

@colver: I know mate, but I think we took too many players who were carrying long time injury problems. This could come back to haunt us. Rooney and Ashley Coles andle problems are niggling again, and I noticed Ashley Cole was not running freely up and down the wings as he usually is able to do. Barry just coming back from injury, how is he fit to play really – he is not match ready. King was a huge risk to take knowing his medical injury history, but they took him and now half a game and he is out for 3 weeks, so prob out of the WC. In some ways we were very unlucky though against the USA, because both Heskey and Rooney were thru one on one with GK and shot straight at him
. I doubt Wayne is really proper match fit Colver, and like wise Heskey is always out injured, so what were we doing taking all those crocks? I don’t know if you can answer this Colver, but do the spanish, italian, and german and dutch leagues etc play as many games in their season as England players have to play? Because it seems we play so many more, but that might be just me misunderstanding! I agree with you on Capello’s tactical nous, I am not confident of it either!

@CraigMc: We will just have to mate, i think we all knew beforehand it would be aslow process. Weve just to bite out lip and ride out the bad times and hope the good times are near.
20/30,000 seats empty would send out a message. Sadly though i think people like you and stephen, myself and many others will make a sacrifice and it will be thrown in our faces as some moron comes in and takes our seat.
Im sorry that might sound harsh, and i know grognard got some negative views for expressing this, but fans who come and take our seats despite all the rubbish the glazers have done, are just pissing in our faces.
They are the people that are keeping the glazers in charge, and yet they will be the ones 5/6 years down the line who will be crying when this club is in the shits, even though they were the ones who contributed to our downfall.
Im sorry mate im going on and on and on and its late but those type of people just irk me. They know very well why people like us gave up our seat, they surely should be able to see how bad the glazers are, and yet throw their money at them and take our seats like we are the unfaithful fans.
All this whilst all they will see this summer is probably yet another star player in vidic leave and be replaced by smalling and nobody of any worth coming in. I mean do they have shit for brains or are they deluded.
Everything is all sunshine and light in the kingdom of united.

Im pretty sure we play way more games than the other continental teams. But then other teams have had injuries. Capello just chose to stick with the injured players rather than chancing on less experienced players.
My worry with Rooney is that he has an awful habit of forgetting how to score after a spell of injuries and it takes him an awful long time to regain his goalscoring form. I don’t think this is going to be his tournament for that reason.
England’s loss of course is United’s gain. Assuming he doesn’t get injured for England he will be fit for the start of next season and that is essential because without Rooney’s goals Manchester United don’t finish in the top four.
Barry is a worry as well but apart from Carrick he is the only natural defensive midfielder we have and essential for midfield balance. But if he is not fit Capello should give Carrick a chance rather than try the Gerrard-Lampard partnership which we all know doesn’t work.
Of course Capello could prove us wrong. But the times he has tried different tactics in friendlies they flopped and the only system he has had any sort of success with is the Gerrard, Barry, Lampard, Lennon, Rooney, Heskey front six. And I dont think that will work against a top team.

Most folks do feel this way – I feel this way, and the Galzer bastards are banking on this to have their way with us!
I’ve said this before, and it seems as, and probably, more relevant than ever, that to beat the Glazers you must take a battlefield perspective.

We all criticize Fergie but look at Capello. What he said and what he did.
1: I will choose fit players – He took Rio,King,Barry.
2:I will take players according to their form : Carrick and Heskey (ahead of Bent ) were taken.
3:Milner is my future – His future was substituted after 30 mins.
4:I will take players who feature regularly for their club – SWP? Heskey?
Capello ,You are an idiot.Owen at one leg is better than all English strikers bar Rooney.Even Some goalkeepers have scored more goals than Heskey. If you had to choose one unfit player, then it must had been Owen and you should have taken the gamble. No one in this world except you knows why you prefer SWP over J.Cole.

@Red Ranter: See that’s the problem RR! The truth is you all know ‘what used to be the problem with me when someone attacked a player I liked’, the emphasis being on USED TO BE the problem. It was a long time ago that I amended that part of my response to Nani retorts, after a few wise wise heads talked with me about it, namely some steady Irish bloggers who frequented this board at the time, Fred the Red and Jb who were still around at the time. They gave advice I listened too, because they had learned maturity and better way of dealing with things. I remember distinctly offering a full apology to your friend who wrote the article on Nani, and I started to use a wiser head in my approach. I know I did, but every time you want to remonstrate with me on something, you go right back to ages ago, to things apologised for and incidentally NOT REPEATED! Yes I wind up the Rooney fans, and they barrack right back, and most of them are a lot older than me, and I don’t mind the banter, in fact I enjoy it. I dish it out all the time on the terraces, and they dish it right back, especially the Rooney fans, but I have won most of them over now with the Nani banter and Rooney jesting. I don’t appreciate you keep going back over something that has long since gone, like some old school Father who cannot see any improvement in their charges behaviour, but only remembers what once was! That is how I see it, and if you can find anyone on this blog who has a problem with me, and my posts since that long time ago which I put right, then speak up and name the people that have a problem please. Because I don’t know anybody apart from Grog and Yourself that have had problems with my post comments in answering their post comments. We are talking about people here on this blog who have strong opinions and are not afraid to quote them, or to wrangle in many a debate with me – but none of them I have had say – I have an issue with you Craig and this is it. So if you know anything different then just speak it out! I know from talking to many fans on here that we appreciate each others comments and we AGREE TO DIFFER because we may have very strong opinions that differ mightily on players and issues. I have a problem with one or two because I enjoy people who don’t take themselves too seriously, and can laugh at themselves, and with others and not at others. I can see you might have a dilemma RR because Grognard and I have have opposite personalities that can be incendiary, and for the sake of the other bloggers on here whom I love a lot as fellow United fans, I have tried to avoid and ignore Grog’s post as he said he has tried too with mine. I appreciate your difficulty in trying to maintain control on your own blog RR, when you have a multitude of diverse personalites and opinions amongst bloggers, but I can only reiterate that as far as I know I am ok with most of the bloggers here. If I am wrong, then come on you bloggers tell me please if any of you find my debating with you a problem. I have not named names of any of the friends I have on here, because I don’t want to bring them into this arguement, which is not their’s, but as you said RR and I quote ‘We all know what you are like Craig when anybody touches the players you like.” So you brought the WE ALL into it! As I said, that was a long time ago, and if anybody thinks anything different then they are free to say so. I am not trying to cause division, not trying to bring others into this, or to get them to take sides – that’s childish. Yet I stand my ground that I get on very well with most bloggers here, whom I enjoy bantering with, and keeping things LIGHTHEARTED, and I don’t apologise for not wanting to write long rambling prose in every post. Sometimes a little spoon of sugar of humour is a great thing and MANCS are very good at it. Anyway that’s all I have to say RR, and yes your right I have respected you and not been mouthy against you, because its your own blog, and that I do appreciate, though we may see all things thru different pair of eyes.

Looks like the question we may have to ask ourselves is thus. Would you swap Vidic for Benzema and Chiellini? Real are going to offer £25mil and Benzema for Vidic, and United are going to offer that £25mil for Chiellini.
Answer? Probably. Vidic seems to want out, hasn’t been amazing this season, and Benzema and Chiellini are 22 and 25! Add Neuer to that and I’d be happy with our summers business.
Neuer
Rafael Chiellini Ferdinand Evra
Valencia Carrick Hargreaves Nani
Rooney Benzema
Not bad eh?

@Stephen: Oh right, thanks Stephen, I appreciate that, because as I said I cannot watch every single game, so have to choose the games carefully!

@Owen: I was just thinking that myself Owen – no way are Real Madrid offering the equivelant of 50million in essence for Vida – if they are, they are stupider than anyone could imagine.
