Another new signing for United sees faith placed in youth

Amidst the football thugs and exhilarating goals, there’s been plenty to talk about at Euro 2012 recently.

However, today’s back pages are all about Wayne Rooney and the news United have signed yet another young starlet with the world at his feet.

The Sun and the Telegraph report that despite being moderately satisfied with the draw against France, Roy Hodgson believes that Rooney is the man England will rely on to make the final leap and book a ticket for the quarter-finals.

“Our real ace in the hole should be Wayne Rooney because he is very fit and raring to go,” said the England manager, “he really can’t wait to get on the field and if he can play like Wayne Rooney, then we’re going to be a bit more difficult to beat for some of these teams because you can only benefit from having someone of his quality in your team.”

Rooney will return to action in the final group game against Ukraine and one wonders how long will take for the public to turn against him again. As at any other tournament, controversies between England fans, media and United players are only a red card away.

Rooney’s new teammate, Nick Powell, revealed to the Telegraph and the Guardian that joining United is “a dream come true”.

Both broadsheets empathise Powell’s willingness at the prospect of working with Sir Alex Ferguson: “I’m excited about continuing my development with Sir Alex and the world-class players in the squad. The thought of making the step up to the Premier League next year is an exciting prospect. I can’t wait to get started.”

Powell’s £4million move finds space on the pages of the Mirror as well, who yesterday had anticipated that Crewe had ruled out a loan-back deal.

Finally, the Sun and the Daily Mail take a break from basking in the glory of England’s fantastic draw against France (what? They haven’t won the Euro yet?) and pointing a disgusted finger at Polish hooligans (and presumably patting BBC’s Panorama on the back) to report that Shinji Kagawa has wowed to become United’s new attacking weapon, stating that he wants to play “in the hole”.

“I feel like that’s where I play my best football. I plan on working hard so I can win my place at the position.

“They’re one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I was given a chance to play for them. I took a lot of things into consideration, like the fact that they’ve got a deep squad, their style of football and it wasn’t an easy decision, but I wanted the challenge,” the former Dortmund player told Japanese news agency.
