Aston Villa 0-0 Man Utd: United Escape With Draw
United put on another disjointed away display as Aston Villa did their claim to the number four slot no harm with a credible draw at Villa Park. There is a lot to say in the post mortem analysis, so let’s get on with it.
It was always going to be hard following an international break which was as important as a comb for Wayne Rooney. The team hardly got together as a team prior to the game, in the words of Fergie. And in fact, part of his lineup was dictated by that disjointedness. So whilst the back four (O’Shea, Rio, Vidic, Evra) was a reasonable enough choice, the midfield had Ronaldo, Giggs, Carrick and Park. Nani, Anderson and Ronaldo had all returned from Brazil and it seemed unlikely that the boss was going to play all three in a midfield four, against a hardworking and well rested (relatively) Villa midfield trio of Petrov, Reo-Coker and Sidwell. Ronaldo, as I said in the preview, was always going to start, and so he did. Rooney and Tevez made up the front two.
I did however find the substitutions strange, and served as another illustration of why Ferguson is missing someone with a better tactical brain. But we’ll touch on that after this.
United were as dire as I’ve ever seen them all season. Passes went astray, moves broke down courtesy some lazy work or poor positioning of players, or some good work by the Villa players. Ronaldo did all he could do. But he needed help which he wasn’t getting. He ran as much as his travel weary legs could afford him, but after riding one double-teamed challenge after another something had to give. His sulking and frustrations for every challenge, while being cringeworthy to me, was understandable considering nothing is currently going his way. Of course, him gesturing to away fans and reminding them of his number one status was a little too desperate. Cristiano, you are much better than that mate. Surely, for a person who had the mental fortitude to rise above the bile following the 2006 WC fallout, this seems a little too brittle? In short, he was well snuffed out by the Villa defence, so credit where it was due.
Rooney and Tevez were clearly not working on yesterday’s evidence. Tevez seems a pale shadow of last season, and nothing remotely approaching his pre-season hunger and form. He was reduced to trying to win the ball in vain in his own half. Can’t seem to be able to buy a goal for himself even if his life depended on it. Park tried but didn’t help. Rooney — well, let’s just say that he seems either a little low on confidence or hasn’t returned to full fitness, yet.
The defence, however, was the saving grace, with EVDS and Vidic being exceptional. The crunching tackle by Vidic, contrary to what the commentators might make you believe, was not a penalty.
On to the tactics, and it was strange to see what Fergie was thinking when he sent Nani on for Tevez; throwing in a striker, who might spend more time in the business end, for someone who spent more time playing defensive midfield clearly made sense. Ronaldo could have been the Nani replacement, as he was limping whilst Anderson could have come on for Giggs, who was easily overrun. It’s the sort of strange substitutions that have been perplexing.
All said, it was a tough away game against a team, for all our excellent head-to-head record, that needs to be taken seriously. It was made doubly difficult following the international game and injuries. However, whilst I can accept a draw when the team gives their all, it leaves me asking questions about our ability to dig in under adversity and eke out a result. It was the sort of game where the side might have got all three points despite injuries.
It’s November, and it’s too early to call the season over. But December doesn’t get any easier with the distraction of the World Club Cup, and on a day when Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea drew, it has to be put down as a case of an opportunity gone amiss.

asked the boyz to show up and they certainly did not dissappoint..what a 1st half and great second half discipline esp the last 20 mins wen we were down to 10 men.
beachryan i have to disagree with you on your raings of our midfield. men they were everything, carricks passing was always upront, fletcher ran the whole pitch and even with a yellow card still managed to go in tuckles.
after yesteday i have to make one conclusion that this season will not be won by more than 70 points if any team is to win.

@Gabriel: I agree but if you throw in Hargo into the mix we paid £52/53m of that trio, looks awfully expensive.
I hope they get a chance but if Fergie thinks fletch and Park are ahead of them in the pecking order then really do they have a future?

@RDJ: I believe the signing of the pair would be good business. They are both young and in positions where we need addressing. Our squad would be getting as near as complete as we could hope for. As it is Tosic that is coming sooner, I’m more excited about him. We don’t have a left-footed winger at the mo and he would be a useful option, plus he’s apparently a dead-ball specialist, which might also mean he’s a good crosser of the ball
something we are lacking at the mo. I just hope Nani gets his chance to prove his worth before the lad gets here, cuz if Tosic comes and hopefully, begins to shine, Nani might be resigned to the bench.
About the Ljajic boy, he would be almost 18 when we get him. Not too young, but old enough to learn and play with the big boys. He will definitely get action in the pre-season and that might be a litmus test of his readiness to feature for the 1st team. I really hope he comes good, as he might be able to give us that penetration and urgency in the attacking area of midfield we currently lack. Although, I think Carrick would be excellent here, his defensive prowess is making Fergie play him as a defensive option. Shame really, cause everytime he moves forward, he gets goals, assists or meaningful attempts and penetrative play.

@Stephen: I think they do have a future in United, they are still relatively young, don’t forget. Besides, we all know Fergie trusts and usually relies on his old guard/golden boys (Giggs, Scholes, Rooney, Ronaldo etc) and who knows, maybe Fergie is planning on giving the likes of Giggs, Scholes and Park a last Hoo-rah before the young lads well and truly take over?
The old guard obviously don’t deserve to be tossed aside and Fergie is the one person that will never toss aside a player for no justifiable reasons; look at how long he stood by Saha? The team is in transition and I believe we will gradually see the phasing out of Giggs, Scholes, Park, Nevster etc. Nani and the rest just have to wait their turn but in the meantime learn from the older lads and when given an opportunity, clinch it and don’t let go. That’s what Fergie wants to see, that determination and hunger to succeed and be the best. Young footballers get stuff too easy these days and it makes most lazy and unable to fulfill their potential, something Fergie doesn’t tolerate. That’s why he loves Rooney and Ronaldo, these lads give their all and always try to give their best and be the best. If the younger lads in the team can emulate this mantra, I have no doubts they will get more than a decent amount of playing time.

@Gabriel: With the success of Vidic, i believe that Fergie grown more confident about players in the Eastern European leagues. There may me many Arshavin’s and Berbatov’s in these countries waiting to be found. These players are more suited to the English league and climate. I for one am very excited about the prospect of Tosic even though he is relatively unknown.

@Gabriel: Park is only 27!

I hope they do because they do have superb ability, Anderson in my eyes is burdened with the lack of goals or er goal and personally believe it is really getting to him.
Nani looks frustrated but that is understandable due to the lack of chances he seems to get, but with the signing of Tosic will he be faded out more? If tosic does get a chance and taked the oppertunity then Fergie will play Ronnie and him, with Park comming in for the bigger games, fuck knows why.
Fergie has also nailed his colours to the Fletcher/Carrick combination with Scholes comming back and he is a Hargo fan also, if he ever plays again!!
It will be tough for the two lads but they must take their chance this season when they get it, because so far they havn’t.

@RDJ: Another good point about the climate and weather.. I believe England’s wet but warmer climate might be more towards what they are used to back home. Feckin English Weather, It’s pouring down right now and to think the weather forecast said ‘FOG’
I’m freakin excited about Tosic too, can’t wait till January just to see him in United colours.
I really hope he becomes an excellent player as that fee we paid would be a steal.
Like you said, he might be a Vidic in the rough, there are a lot of stars and prospects emerging from the eastern European scene and hopefully he is one for the present and the future.

@Stephen:
I know Park is still middle-aged, but let’s face it, if you were to pick ur 1st eleven players with none having a handicap(eg Brown completeness over Rafael’s need for defensive cover from the wings) would Park be in it? I don’t think so…
Park is an excellent player to have, don’t get me wrong but in terms of overall productivity to attack, our other wingers beat him hands down and when we use full-backs that don’t need extra cover/help, his usefulness is pretty much trumped by that of Nani and Ronnie. This is why in the near future, he might not get the amount of playing time he’s getting now. Also, when I say ‘Old Guard’, I mean the lads that have been at the club for a couple of years.
Ando in my opinion is still struggling to find his niche in this team and it doesn’t help when he’s given different and undefined roles all so frequently. Is he an attacking midfielder, a defensive one or a central midfielder? I believe he is the latter. He is a creative and combative central midfielder and could be a Box-to-Box one if he worked on his composure and game tempo. If he slowed his game down a bit, he could read the game better, intercept balls more accurately, make useful forward passes and even get the occasional runs into the box and the goals too. Someone just needs to guide him down that path I think but I don’t trust our technical team tbh.
With Nani, I reckon it’s all about game appreciation. For the life of me, I don’t know why Nani seems to always make poor decisions on the pitch!!! Is he not concentrating or focused enough? or is he still very immature and doesn’t recognise the great opportunity he has in playing for the best club in the world? He has all the qualities needed to be an excellent winger, but always misuses them. That is probably what frustrates Fergie and it does me as well. He’s 22 now I think and he needs to get his head in the game, maybe this signing of Tosic might make him realise that his spot in the squad is not guaranteed and there are others willing and ready to take his place. I just hope with Ronnie missing in the next game(s), he takes his chance and doesn’t let go.

I hope that Nani’s deal is one of an education. 22 is far, far from being old, and he has a good injury record (ie, not many). As everyone has noted he has the raw attributes to be successful, it’s the nous and vision that he is lacking. Those are things that can be taught. All I hope is that he isn’t swayed to leave, because I really believe he has the potential to greatness. I really hope he does get a run with Ronnie out, and shows what he can do.
As for Anderson I think the exact same logic applies. These are really, really young players that are still very new (<50 matches) to the Premier league. They’re learning the language, adapting to the culture and learning all the time. Personally as exciting as potential is, I didn’t expect to seem them nearly as much as we did last season. The same will be true for the Serbian youngsters, we shouldn’t expect them to slot in and start playing well. Fergie is amassing a full squad that will be able to cope with the departure of hsi older players, and I’ve nto seen much reason to not have some faith in him.

@Gabriel: I agree with synopsis with regards to Park, but he does play a lot of the bigger games and with young Rafa playing right back I suppose he does give the lad a bit of cover there, which he wouldn’t get if Ronnie or Nani played.
Fergie sees the side like a jigsaw puzzle and the belief that Park covers Rafa is a part of that, I am not sure in the view that Anderson doesn’t get a defined role. I had heard that being brought up constantly and know one can tell me that Fergie just lets him go out there and play.
He is simalar to Stevie Me in the sense that he is a bit box to box and the way football is det up now everyone had a defined role, with Andy and Stevie me paly like we all used to in the playground, chase after the ball. He also has not had a run in the side plus a settled midfield partner with would help his game, and he would probably fit better in a midfield three. I still wonder why he has been given a run at left midfiela, especially with our lack of left footed midfield players?
I am not sure with this view that our coaching staff is poor, I know for a fact that Rene Meulensteen is extremely well thought of in the game.
I know with the likes of Choccy and Phelan at the club there does a air of “job for the boys” element a the club, but lets hope they are decent a what they do but it is easy to be sceptical I must say!

Park usually plays in games where the opposition have tricky wingers running their flanks(Young Walcott ,SWP Robinho etc). Since he is kind of defensive he helps the Wingbacks cope with the pressure that this players bring up. If you have noticed park is usually stationed on the same flank these players play. Nani isnt good defensively so I can see why Fergie chooses Park over him but you cannot rule out the penthouse doghouse situation

@Stephen: Which is why when Brown returns and when Rafa gets his defensive side of the game on point, Park’s main usefulness will be nullified. (Except in the games where Fergie wants to be ultra-cautious and a bit defensive)
About Ando, that’s my point exactly. You can’t really say what his exact role in the United team is after watching him. In the Brazil team, he played as a combative, creative centre mid and did a very good jo, even getting a goal. This is where I believe his strengths lie; he is strong, can tossle for the ball, has pace, can pass accurately and if need be can move forward a bit and supply/link up chances for the attackers. He is definitely not an attacking mid as he has no composure, not the best slow dribbler, can’t make meaningful runs into the box and most importantly, can’t shoot or even score. He is also not a defensive mid cause he lacks that awareness and composure needed for that position.
I think he needs to slow his game down a bit and hence read the game better, then he could be more effective in that central berth.
With regards to our technical staff, I’d like for them to instill a possession-play mentality in our team. We should be able to pass the ball around comfortably, even in tight spaces, keep the ball and be able to use that to draw out the opposition the way teams like Barca and Arsenal do. Even Chelsea have begun doing it, it’s the best way to play in Europe and most importantly overcome teams that park the bus in their half. I know our style is the fast-paced counter, but most teams are realising that once they slow the game down or park the bus, we are almost ineffective. And as it has been happening quite a lot recently, I woulda thought the technical team would have tried to develop that part of our game that’s all.

@Gabriel: Spot on with the point he needs to slow his game down, he certainly does simply because to is trying too hard, and maybe if ever he gets a goal then a weight might be lifted and he relaxes somewhat.
We do play decent possession football mate, we are slow and quite frankly boring like Chelsea, and they still are in my book!
We play high tempo football which is great to watch, and teams simply can’t handle when we are as Mr T puts it “on the jazz”.
The issue i have sometimes we change our game for thr team we play and my attitude is fuck you, he have to deal with us and not vice versa

@Stephen: My point exactly mate, we either become ultra defensive when we play a top side that plays that possession footy or we become blunt when we play a team that parks the bus, why? Because we are not versed at possession play!!
When I say this, I mean being able to pass ur way outta tight corners, being able to make short decisive runs behind opposition, being able to pass and keep the ball from opposition for even two minutes so as to control the tempo or nullify opposition momentum.
We might keep possession, but that’s only when the team parks the bus and usually, we still find it hard to score. If we played the way I’m talking about, scoring would not be a problem as we have the talents to play this way. Also, playing possession footy doesn’t necessarily mean the game slows down, it can be fast and breath-taking when it needs to. Look at Barca and Arsenal, hard to admit, I do love watching them play.
I’m not saying we depart from our really successful fast-paced counter game, far from it, however, in some games, we need to utilise solid build-up play in order to sniff out opposition and score and we can’t do this without knowing how to effectively play that way.

@ Stephen Yes he hasn’t taken his chances but i do advocate for more game time. Say he plays in a run of 7 matches and we see how consistent he is this season. I feel those few chances he had haven’t been the best way to judge his performance because today he might play good and the next chance he might be low on confidence. A run of matches will certainly help in the assessment

@Nelson: I agree mate, he deserves a run but as i said earlier we change the team for whom we are playing, which in my view is not right.
We don’t have a first eleven, I know not many do these days but how many times have the other top four chopped and changed their team, not as much as we do, and they do not cater for the teams they are playing like we do.

@Nelson: Depends. For games against teams like Stoke, West Ham, Hull, Pompey, Rovers I would use:
Foster
Rafael Rio Vidic Evra
Ronaldo Carrick Anderson Nani
Rooney Berbatov
In big games, like the CL or Chelski, Arse, Villa, Liverpool I would use:
VDS
Brown Rio Vidic Evra
Carrick Hargreaves Anderson/Fletcher(depends on who we face the game after)
Ronaldo Berbatov Rooney

783 and counting but trust me the blog has been moving at a snail’s pace of late. No action or any interesting debates or rants. Come on people, wake up and have something interesting to say. Red Ranter is on vacation and this site is in serious danger of drowning from it’s own vomit. Lets spark up some debate. Positive or negative. I’m getting tired checking every couple hours to see a total of three new comments. Christ do we need to be lead by the hand like children. So what if RR isn’t around and we don’t have a new lead in article to start us off. It’s up to us to keep the engine running so lets get a move on it. I can’t be the only shit disturber or controversial bloke on this blog. Some of you need to step up and be counted. Say something, anything, just let us know you are alive and kicking and that United matters.

FIX IT MANUAL ON MAKING MANCHESTER UNITED SEXY AGAIN
OK, Consider this a new lead article. Some of us have lost our steam and motivation over this little break that Red Ranter has taken. Apparently he is as tired and fed up with life as it seems Sir Alex Ferguson is these days. Is it me or has the Boss lost a little bit of his luster and fire?
So leave it to Grognard to provide a fix it primer to solve the problems plaguing the team and to deliver a better more attractive and far sexier product than what we have been shown so far this season.
The following is a list of improvements or changes that need to be made in order for us to once again feel pride and confidence in the Red Devils.
1. Fergie needs to find the fire and passion in himself once again. Where are the head games used on opponent managers and player? Where are the rants and rage shown towards underachieving players? And above all, stop showing so much bloody contentment with everything and everybody. In the past he has had better teams that accomplished more and were constantly disciplined or screamed at by the Gaffer because he was never satisfied and always demanded more. Where is Fergie’s hunger?
2. Fergie should sack the entire coaching staff or at least get rid of Mikey Mouse Phelan. I could do a better job of preparing the lads every week than this tosser.
3. Get a firm commitment for a specific amount of transfer money available so that come January, Zoran Tosic is not the only player we go after. It’s time the club made it known just how stable or unstable the club’s finances are.
4. Carlos Tevez must be allowed to leave in January as he is not being used properly or at all for that matter. But most of all, his disappointment and subsequent bad attitude could potentially cause a player rift and poison the squad. This is a player who is loved and respected by the other Latin speaking players. Play him or get rid of him.
5. It’s time to raise the final curtain on the old guard, namely Giggs, Scholes and Neville. And I’d even add EVDS to the mix. These players will always be loved and respected warriors but they are not just clearly past their best, they are holding back better and far younger players. It’s time to set them adrift.
6. Get rid of the AIG logo and relationship as it is now a joke. Might as well put US Federal Reserve on our kit as AIG was bailed out and is basically owned by the US Government. This may seem like a cosmetic fix but it sends a very negative and sad message to the footballing world that we are in partnership with a failed American fat cat who needed to be bailed out by the Feds. It makes us look pretty low and desperate, not to mention pathetic.
7. It’s time for Rafael, Possebon, Tosic and Frazier Campbell to get their chance and extended opportunity to play regularly. Rafael for one should start every game we play other than games where his defensive weakness might be exploited. In other words, Chelsea or any team with a good left winger. He needs to get his time as he is a super talent. Possebon needs to get a chance to prove himself and Campbell has got be brought back in January and elevated to #3 striker. Welbeck is still very young and can wait a bit or loan him out. Manucho is still a mystery to me. We also need to know if Foster is the real deal. Play him. If he is supposed to be the heir to EVDS, then stop playing the Pole and give him a chance to show us he is the real deal. If not, go out and buy Rene Adler, or Manuel Neuer. When it comes to goalkeepers I love Germans. Although I would be equally elated with Artur Boruc. As for Johnny Evans, he will have to be patient. Rio and Vidic are just to good but Rio is getting up there and in two years Evans may get his chance.
8. Fergie needs to address and stabilize his central midfield tandem as well, he needs to find the finished product on the left side. I am hoping Hargreaves will return 100% but on the chance he doesn’t, a replacement must be bought. Carrick is fine but Fletcher and Anderson are only quality bench players for me. We need either a DMF general like Marco Senna or Daniel DeRossi or an offensive artist AMF player like Diego, Marko Marin or Andrei Arshavin. Hell, Arshavin or Marin would even solve our LMF/LW problem. Fine, Zoran Tosic may be the real deal, but then again, we thought Nani was too. We need either more leadership from the middle of the park or more ideas or both. At present we are getting very little.
9. United did impress me when they found our two youngest acquisitions in Serbia. Great, don’t stop now. The Eastern block of Europe is a great football factory as are other areas of Europe. It’s time to stop looking to South America and Portugal for all our needs.
10. Fergie needs to take the shackles of the team and just let the lads play the game instinctively and with passion and flair. For too long now we have been fed this Italian style bologna which frankly has turned green with mold and age and needs to be thrown in the trash. Reawaken the offensive adventure of the side known as the attacking masters of Europe. We are all tired of watching Fergie’s negative agenda on the field which has shown itself to be cautious, slow, unambitious and overflowing with fear. My God, what has happened to the great Fergie? I swear he is looking and acting more and more like a 68 year old Mourinho but without the ability to make great tactical moves or proper substitutions.
11. For God sake it is time to finally name Rio Ferdinand as your permanent captain. This team needs that leadership and needs to stop playing musical chairs with the captaincy.
12. Please bring in someone who can teach these boys to finish and above all, CROSS THE FUCKING BALL. Enough already!
13. No players are allowed to wear pink boots. Fucking puffers.
14. And finally, Fergie needs to stop holding the team hostage and needs to define the period he still wants to be manager and then also help with picking a suitable successor by naming him #2 for a season before he retires. He needs to pass the torch properly to ensure that this team does not take a dive after he leaves. I also would like to see him give Eric Cantona a chance in coaching because I think he could do a good job and because, I want, no I demand the Return of the King.
Well there you have it fellow Mancunian’s, a list I started and that you can add to or just argue over. But lets get some life back on this blog. I challenge you all to make it so.

@jos: Couple of seasons???, as much as I’d love it cue Keegan, if Fergie continues, I think he has has only two seasons max left in him. I hope I’m wrong though
@Liam: Nail meet head. If everything had been going fine this season, no one would care if we had Avram Grant as our assistant coach, if it wasn’t Phelan, the fans would have surely found someone else to pin the blame on .
@Kubz: We were one- goal ahead, no matter how big of a team United is, the most important thing was to defend the 3 points. You might not agree with me, but why push for more goals when you’re one man down? Fergie’s mentality was obviously to protect the lead he had, hence the sub for Giggs and I actually agree with him. He could have brought on Nani like he usually does when he takes off a striker, but we didn’t need that today, we just needed to retain possession and run down the clock, it worked, so no matter how stupid or eye- roll worthy everyone thinks it was, I think it was a good move.

Liverpool have drawn again and have dropped two points, which means that we would only be 3 points below them if we win our game in hand. Is this the first time this season where we’ve got 3 points and the others have dropped points?
I hate Martin Tyler, Gerrard was taking those pot shots from 30 40 yards out that just went sailing into the sands, and he was still praising him that he was trying to take matters into his own hand, he’s still got time to turn the match etc.. Why can’t he just call it a poor shot?

Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or. Obviously. Messi 2nd, Torres 3rd… First United player since Best in ’68, which if you ask me is a joke considering the talent we’ve had at the club over the years. If winning nothing domestically gets you third….

Ronnie is EUROPEAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR!!!!
He feckin deserves it, and I hope that shuts the feckin opposing fans up
Apparently, he got more points than second and third combined
so maybe he is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd best eh?
I’m freakin excited for the lad, all that hardwork paid off and all that undeserved stick he gets from the media and fans would seem like nothin now… GO RONNIE!!!

@Traverse:
What a feckin great couple of days, eh?
We beat the council boys at their council stadium, Chelshit lose at home, Loserpool draw at home, we sign a wonderkid and now Ronnie gets this award!!!
Feckin brilliant!
I just hope he starts to get the proper recognition he deserves, the jealousy and spite from the media is bordering on intentional propaganda. I bet tmz, there’ll be some article explaining why he shouldn’t have won and all that rubbish
All that matters is that he won and I won’t be surprised if he’ll be in serious contention come next year too.

Who cares about awards. It’s time for Manchester United fans to show this lad some love and respect. It may not mean as much to him as winning the Ballon D’Or but it will go a long way to ensuring his future loyalty to this club. He is the best player in the world and many of us don’t respect or appreciate him. We only look for his negatives and not his positives. The fact that some even thought that he might not win this award made me laugh. He was so far above and beyond all those players last year. As for this year, get prepared next December for the award to go to Lio Messi. He has stayed healthy and has delivered great performances for the attack crazy Barcelona. Ronaldo would have to go on an unconscious run of brilliant form to be considered again. But for now, congrats to Ronny on a very deserving award.
