So How Good Is Ben Foster? — A Watford Fan’s Perspective
So Ben Foster has finally played as many games for Manchester United as he has for England. United fans might not know too much about him (apart from his debut against Derby) so I thought I’d let you know what to expect.
As a Watford fan I would say that Ben Foster is somewhere between God and Gandhi in relation to his importance in the history of the world. For two seasons at Vicarage Road he performed like no other keeper I have ever seen on the hallowed turf. We’ve had some good keepers down at Watford including the young David James and United’s own goalkeeping coach Tony Coton, but nobody came near to this exceptional young number one.
Standing at over 6’2†the 24 year-old keeper arrived on loan from United at the start of the 2005-06 season as a 21 year-old. Watford were tipped by everyone for relegation, and the signing of a young inexperienced goalkeeper with a handful of first team games for Wrexham did little to lift the atmosphere of pessimism.
In truth, in the first few games he played for The Hornets, Foster did not look too sure of himself. The fans were wondering why Aidy Boothroyd had brought him in. Gradually, over a period of a dozen games Foster won the crowd over with a series of excellent performances. His agility and shot stopping was second to none and his success ratio in one on one situations must have been close to that of Peter Schmeichel.
That season, against all the odds Watford found themselves promoted to the Premiership. Marlon King took all the plaudits for his goalscoring exploits, but Watford fans knew the success owed at least as much to the brilliance of Foster.
In the Premiership Watford struggled and finished bottom of the league. We were rarely beaten by a big score and twice that we conceded four times was against United, against whom Foster was not allowed to play. He was voted as Watford fans player of the season with an enormous percentage of the votes.

Despite what he showed at Derby on Saturday, another hugely impressive aspect of his performances at Watford was his quick, long and accurate distribution. Although it may be fair to say that United aren’t quite as direct as Watford (!) this aspect of his game could add another dimension to United’s attacking play.
Prior to his unfortunate knee injury in the summer I was certain that Foster would be challenging for the number one jersey at Old Trafford this season. I was also convinced that he would make the England shirt his own. Oh for Ben Foster against Croatia.
There is no doubt that Foster will prove, as long as he fully recovers from his injury, that he is the best young goalkeeper in England by a country mile. Scott Carson, Joe Hart, Chris Kirkland, all decent keepers but Ben Foster is in another league.
Fergie spotted his potential whilst on loan at Wrexham from Stoke City. He was presumably alerted by Darren who was at Wrexham at the time. United signed him without Foster having played a first team game at Stoke. After just one pre-season friendly appearance for United reserves he was loaned out to Watford. The rest, as they say, is history.
The news had just broken that Sir Alex was prepared to let Foster go back out on loan after he recovered from his injury. With Watford struggling away for promotion I was very excited. Then Van Der Sar gets injured and Kuszczak, who is nowhere near as good as Foster, got himself sent off and the dream of Ben Foster back in the Hornets goal was gone.
Having read through this article I wondered whether I might have gone over the top with my praise. Believe me, I haven’t. He is that good.
If he plays as I know he can, you United fans are in for a treat.

He did save us against derby with 2 of the best saves I have ever seen but it was against derby (10 points only with one win in 30 games bottom of the leage derby)
We have to see him against tougher opposition maybe against chelsea when the match wouldnt matter really because we already won the league

Oh come on please, since I started posting here I didnt post one post in peace.
I am a big Real Madrid fan and I like Juventus too Ive seen all of Madrids games this season and some of Juventus too Ive also seen Cassillas and Buffon in both Spain and Italy over the years.
Cassillas and Buffon are arguably the best keepers in the world right now and the 2 saves from Foster that day reminded me of them.
I said they were “2 of the best saves” not the best 2 saves so cut me some slack.

i kept an eye on him while he was with the hornets, he looked very good indeed. I was delighted that he was contract tied, and not allowed to play against us. His debut against derby was very good with those two excellent saves. His distrubution is key to a quick counterattacking style that suits us. looking forward to seeing more of Foster, with more gametime, he can only get better

Is it just me or is he a little bit like Schmeichel? Very good young goalkeeper and could become Man Utd’s first choice in the not-so-distant future.
[Graham]
I agree that he is better than Kuszczak, but not that much better. I find that PIG is an all right goalkeeper.

I agree with the writer 100%. foster is a simply outstanding keeper and hwe should be our future no.1 no doubt. I watched watford games with particular interst due to him last season and he made countless brilliant saves and was one of the main reason that watford were not humiliated in any match like derby this season . his throws and kicks are excellent too. possibly the best keeper since schemeichel.

There is no doubt that Foster is a fine keeper and that he has proven this beyond his one game audition this past Saturday. He was considered a savior at Watford, so there must be something to the talk as well as to Fergie’s willingness to sign him.
Still I feel it takes a lot more to prove to me that Foster is the future in goal for United. One game does not a future make. I remember Tim Howard playing a great game for United against Celtic in America where he made several unbelievable saves as well as a penalty. Well we all know what happened to him when he played in the EPL for us.
If Foster can handle the pressure of playing for a side where mistakes are not common and winning is at a premium, then he could be the next one to wear the United jersey in goal. No one will ever be the proper heir to Schmeichel. To me Schmeichel is the second greatest goalkeeper of all time, and one cannot just replace a player of that caliber. For those who are curious I rate Sepp Maier of the Bayern teams of the 60′ and 70′s s well as West Germany as the best I have seen. Perhaps Yashin and Banks were better but none of them ever produced the goods as often and in enough big games to tilt the balance in his team’s favor like Sepp.
Ironically the goalkeepers that Schmeichel idolized while growing up were my faves too. Maier and Toni Schumacher. He knows that that Germany consistently produces outstanding keepers. Right now there are at least eight keepers that are German that could be the number 1 on England if they were indeed English and not German. Lehmann and Kahn are old but obvious choices. Hildebrand, Enke, Wiese and Weidenfeller are the next level and the two young keepers who impress me the most are Neuer and Adler. England can’t come up with more than one name that might even compete with that list of goalkeepers. Not Calamity, James, Robinson, Green etc etc. Only one seems destined to hold the torch as England #1. That is young Ben Foster. Provided he stays healthy and the pressure of playing for United does not make him implode.

interesting you rate sepp highly i believe he deservers to be mentioned as one of the greats of the tine along with dino zoff, gordon banks etc ,for me grognard, schmeichel is number 2, but only under the unbelievable lev yashin, who was in a class of his own, and was the only GK i believe to win a the coveted european player of the year, and he was succeded the next year, by the great dennis law, as the song chant goes “There have only been two world-class goalkeepers. One was Lev Yashin, the other was the danish boy boy who played in Manchester”
and it is hard to disagree lev stats and saves throughout his career and i believe he kept a clean sheet in a world cup game with a broken arm or hand, which is incredible considering during the time, WC games would have a lot of goals scored by both teams usually 4 or so in one game.
As for foster he has the potential to be a great, but lets not get to carried away and start over hyping him there is a shortage of good english players let alone keepers, and if we do over hype him he maybe become another flop due to the hype, i have ample faith in him to do well and become a united legend as well as an england one, the sky is the limit for the boy, hopefully he can reach it

Mr Muhozi; I realize that Lev Yashin must get a lot of consideration as he was truly great although I have to base my judgment on players I had the privilege to watch in my lifetime. Also, although this is not a knock on Yashin, I do believe that to be judged a true great you have to have lead your team to some significant awards. Meier, Banks and Schmeichel have done that for both club and country. Yashin was wasted in the cold snow of the Soviet Union.
My father kept telling me that the best keeper he ever saw was a fellow by the name of Ricardo Zamora of Spain. He said he saw both Zamora and Yashin play and he feels Zamora was the best. Many others have also made the claim on Zamora too. The trophy given to the Spanish keeper who is the best in LaLiga every year is named after him and World Soccer magazine also named him as one of the greats of all time on their master list.
For me what makes Meier and Schmeichel so special is that they could make the big save when it mattered most. They were great in the clutch. I’ll never forget the penalty save Schmeichel made against Arsenal in the 99 semi-final replay in injury time. That wasn’t a fluke, that was intensity and greatness personified. I’ll also never forget the performance Maier put in against Poland in the 74 World Cup. Incredible save after incredible save and all in a torrential downpour and the worst pitch I have ever seen. It was heroic. Both keepers also commanded the box. They really were in total control over what happened in that area. True PRESENCE.

You know after watching the game on tape delay for a second time I have to say I was very impressed with Owen Hargreaves at RB. As much as I love the idea of Philip Lahm filling that position, I think that Hargreaves showed me that he can own that role and offer a little more offensive upside than Wes Brown. This could also solve the problem of too many central midfielders vying for two positions. Take the money you would spend on Lahm or Bosingwa or Alvez and break the bank to get the striker we so desperately need. Afterall, our defense is not broken to begi with. Only 15 goals against all season in the BPL tells me we should concentrate on strikers and strikers alone.

Grognard you say “Only 15 goals against all season in the BPL tells me we should concentrate on strikers and strikers alone.“, which is a fair point. But using the same logic then since we have scored 61 goals thise season and are the top scorers as we all know, should that not mean we don’t need a striker and really we’re just craving for perfection?

Conor; You and I both know we need strikers and there is absolutely nothing wrong with craving and striving for perfection. Try it sometime. Ask Fergie if he is the kind to settle for what he has as a goal scoring force. I’ll bet you he feels he needs a striker who can score and also change the look of the team up front. Averaging 2 goals a game might be nice but I would believe a club like United should be ambitious enough to strive for for an average of three a game. A better striker would allow us to shoot for the stars and make us even harder to beat.

even so, thats still good, i think that grognard(and other fans) are upset because we are not beating teams with massive scorelines, i dont see the problem, we have the largest goal-difference, we ARE scoring goals, it doesnt matter if its 1-0 or 100-0, in the league its still 3-points and in the cups it is still a single knock-out. you think buying a player like KJH will boost our goals, not likely, there WILL ALWAYS be days when you just dont/cant score, reading is an example the city games are examples, there will always be days like that and buying a world-class striker for 30mil ain’t going to help.

“buying a world-class striker for 30mil ain’t going to help” It might. Look at Torres, all the strikers in that team except him are like Rooney a bit – they go on a fantastic run of goals, but then go for matches and matches where they couldn’t score if their life was on the line. Torres scores when he is given the chance and that is the kind of player that Manchester United needs.
edit: Naturally there are going to be days – like against Portsmouth – when the frigging ball just won’t go in, but against the likes of Lyon where the were chances and many of them might have gone in, a player that can finish them off might be the difference between semi-finalists and champions.

I get the impression stattos intervention might be good about now
United’s goal average in the premiership is actually below 2 per games (1.96). United have hit the two goal mark in seven seasons (including this one). However we have only broken the 2.2 mark twice, 2.29 in 01-02 and 2.55 in 99-00. That means even at our absolute peak in the Premiership we were still 17 goals short of the 3 goal average. By the looks of it anything around the 2 mark, along with a reasonable defensive record, is enough to win the title or be there or there abouts.
As for the new striker, there are two issues. First we need an extra body full stop because of Saha’s injury problems. Secondly could we improve the first 11 in the striking department, IMO yes we can. However the trick is to improve our conversion rate of chances whilst not damaging our creativity. To do that I believe you are looking at Torres/Benzema/Berbatov/Eto’o level player. KJH, as good a player as he is, I don’t believe has the necessary all round game to maintain our creativity and improve our scoring rate. He would still be a good purchase, but he shouldn’t necessarily be expecting to start 50 games a season.

Dan; First off, read more carefully in the future. Secondly, when our lack of scoring up front betrays us in the Champions League or possibly even the PBL this season and we end up losing, I’ll be thinking of your glass half full mentality and how so many individuals in life tolerate mediocrity. There is nothing wrong with wanting more of an improvement in the teams scoring and distribution of goals. Christ, if you want to sit through a bunch of dull 1-0 games and be elated you won support a piece of shit like Chelsea Pompey or Everton. They are kings of the 1-0 win. I for one want goals and as many as I can get. Why? Because as a United fan for over 20 years I am spoilt and have been overly fed by the clubs willingness to attack and the plethora of goals they have scored in past seasons. We still score goals but where would we be without the brilliance of Ronaldo. Something is radically wrong with the team when it’s right winger is leading the club in scoring by two to one over the next closest. If you cannot see that as problem then you are wearing blinders mate, plain and simple.

in my opinion right back is our biggest concern, brown wants world class money, where at best he is a JAG type player, worth brining in for rotation or injury to a starter, simpson has not broken in to the squad and has been sent on loan, which is not a good sign as it shows he could not cement a place, and still has a way to go before he is a first team regular.
striker, theres so many option in this department it’s not even funny, we have manucho and campbell to return from loan, welbeck to mature a little bit along with rooney and tevez, we can also bring in another talent if the first 3 mentioned are just factors of the hype train, KJH/Fabiano are my joint top choices, if money aint a factor, benzema will be a perfect fit, if we want youth, a little brasilian gem called JO and bobo should be cheap, and a eastern european 17 years old whos name eludes me is also making the rounds a top prospect, it all depends on fergie, personally, ill give a chance to what we have so far, rather than going all spend spend, but that is just me,

Andrei; I need to wake you up mate. If Torres was playing for Manchester United he would have 30 goals, not 20. Why? Because the service to him would be better and more consistent. Liverpool is full of middle tier players who are not on the same level as the players being fielded by Chelski, Arsenal and us. After Gerrard, the rest are just not up to scrub. There is no doubt our style of play also would have given Torres far more chances to score than he gets in that totally anal style Liverpool play.
JB; I disagree with your assessment of Huntelaar. I think you are judging him below the others because he plays in the Dutch League. There have been many great player who of course have come out of that league but to compare generations is unfair. Lets just say van Nistelrooy and MacKaay are just a few of the more recent gems. The league isn’t what it was in the 70′s with the Cruyff’s, Neeskens or is it what it was when the Van Basten’s and Gullits started out. What the Dutch league is no doubt is a football factory like what the former Yugoslavia was. Not a great league but a provider of outstanding footballing talent.
Tell me JB, have you watched Huntelaar play? And if so, how many times. I’ve watched the lad in about 40 games over the past two seasons and I for one am wondering what the heck you are on about. He has tremendous skill and for me, he has more skill then RVN ever had and we know how well he did. He’s also capable of scoring spectacular goals as well as goals outside of the 18 yard box. The one thing he lacks is great pace but he is not so slow that he would hamper our offense by his lack of speed. Spewing statistics out is one thing, watching and analyzing what a player can do is something else. Sure he scores some goals because of poor marking, but many of his goals are just powerful attempts with plenty of aggressiveness. Just what we need in the box.

Grognard: I’m not underrating him because of playing in the Dutch leagues, although it would possibly make him a tad more risky than players from the big leagues. You get your gems there (RVN, Makaay, Ronaldo) and you get your duds (Kezmen, Kuyt) just like anywhere else. I’ve seen him 12, maybe 15, times in the past couple of years so you have seen more of him and are probably better placed to judge. When I watch him I don’t see anything particularly wrong with his game, no glaring holes or weaknesses or anything like that. Quite simply I just don’t think he is as good all round as the players I mentioned previously. For someone who always aims for perfection, you can probably appreciate why I would then mark him down as a secondary target rather than our main one(s). And personally I don’t think he has the class of RVN, although to be fair Ruud only began to flourish at a big European at the same point as KJH is now at in his career.
P.S. I didn’t spew any statistics about KJH

JB; Fair enough but I guess we will disagree on him as I do see the quality in him that you don’t. From diving headers to bicycle kicks, to 20 yard screamers and a tremendous instinct for being in the right place at the right time. The others you mention have to work a lot harder to get their goals because they don’t have Huntelaar’s raw goal poaching instinct. RVN had it in spades and so does KJH. Benzema scores beautiful goals because the easy ones come hard to him. We need a poacher, not an artist.

[Grognard], I agree completley with what you say, but you are not really waking me up. I was not talking about number of goals Torres scores, I was only saying that he could have helped Manchester United with goals when they are needed. That was all.
Also Huntelaar is not very good with headers, even though he is tall.
[Dan] The whole point of being a Manchester United fan is so that your team wins and wins in style. We are not expecting rugby scores every match, but 3-0s or 4-1s against the likes of Derby and Bolton is not asking for too much. 1-0s are rarely good enough. They are nice against the likes of Liverpool or Arsenal where pride is at stake, but beating Derby 1-0 is a bit embarassing.

Grognard: Well I guess that’s where we are going to ultimately disagree then. Your criteria seems to be based on goal scoring, mine more on all round contribution. Personally I think our last poacher, as much as he achieved personally, ultimately only served to stymie the team. That is not to say we wouldn’t have a use for a poacher, but I wouldn’t see one being a nailed on fixture in the starting 11.
On a side note, setting aside availability and price, would you rather have Benzema or KJH?

Andrei: As much as you want it to, football just doesn’t work like that. Anyway if you were notching up 3 and 4 goals every time you play a smaller team then the fun quickly drains out from the sport. Anyway just look at the weekend we just beat Derby. Arsenal only drew with Boro, while Liverpool and Chelsea struggled to wins over relegation threatened teams. Bayern lost to the worst team in the Bundesliga, Madrid slumped to Depor and Barcelona mucked up a fairly simple assignment against Almeria. You just simply don’t turn up and beat small teams 4-0 every time; luck, the vagaries of form and the opposition’s efforts will make sure of that. Our goal difference suggest we have done a reasonable enough job handing out stuffings over the course of the season.

maybe a little optimistic of me, in some of these big games there can be a tendancy for the teams to cancle each other out, hopefully this wont be the case. We would all love to see a theatre of dreams showcase, though not many of us would have any problems with 1-0 and 3 pts in the bag. Our defence is good enough to stifle anything the scouse can throw at us, our boy ronaldo can score from anywhere, but i’d relly love to see the renaissance of Rooney. This game is set up for him, he’s always up for a go against the red half of liverpool, so lets hope he has a riot.

Andrei; Is your Huntelaar different than mine? I’ve seen him nail at least a dozen headers, many of the highest quality. So I’m wondering what you are basing this assumption on?
JB; Yes I guess we disagree and the best way to compare our philosophies is to use an analogy. You want United to play beautiful, attractive football similar to the total football of th Dutch teams in the early 70′s. I on the other hand want to play an attacking brand that is pragmatic and a little old school like West Germany from the same period. Where you might prefer Johan Cruyff (for good reason I might add), I prefer Gerd Mueller because he had no frills or fancy moves. He just scored goals and scored big goals in big games. Some might be ugly but they went in. Johan Cruyff never scored as many BIG goals as Gerd Mueller, partly because the approach, although artistic, was not as efficient as the German machine with Beckenbauer and Netzer operating the engine room. Huntelaar reminds me more of German pragmatism and efficiency. Benzema has more flash but I question the substance. As to who I would prefer, my heart says Huntelaar or Berbatov. I really am not won on Benzema and I don’t think he is one on United either.
I want a player who will fit in with the style of play, but more importantly is how he fits in with the city, the dressing room and the team. Personally speaking, Benzema seems like one of those who could only survive and prosper in Spain and Italy. I think the English game would chew him up and spit him out. I think he is very soft and very moody. Having said that, I though the same of Torres. I was wrong there but having Rafa and other Spanish players there helped him get comfortable and acclimated to the Scouser lifestyle. YUK!!!!

Prediction tomorrow; Scousers 1 (Gerrard) Man Utd 1 (Rooney) Yes you read right Rooney. Rooney is going to score a goal. It will be a mis hit that deflects slightly off a defender to tie the game late for us. I just have a feeling our lack of production is going to hurt us tomorrow against an in form Scouser side. Arsenal will beat Chelsea because as I see it a trained chimp or a muppet could out coach Bela Lugosi Grant in a big game. And whether I like him or not, Wenger is no chimp or muppet. Still, he is not Fergie or the Special One. Ooh! Very Good. They’re Fantastic. Be Champions!!!!

I think Foster should be given a start in every 3-4 games for the rest of the seasonbecause Van der Sar is nearly finished and then Foster can take over in goal next season with Kuszczak as backup. There’s no point in us buying a really dear striker like Benzema or Berbatov because Rooney and Tevez will still start anyway. I’d recommend Huntelaar, he’s fairly cheap, is a goal scorer and won’t mind being on the bench. I’d forget about Neville because even if he does come back after so long out and with his age he’ll only be backup. I wouldn’t buy Bosingwa because he’s not great defensively and Ronaldo won’t work back so we could be exposed on the right. Lahm is adequate defensively but would be quite dear. Zaccardo from Palermo is very good defensively and would be cheap but may not adapt as well as Lahm. My Man Utd team next year would be: (a mixture between 4-4-2 and 4-3-3
Foster, Zaccardo, Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic
Scholes, Hargreaves, Anderson (drifting out to the left
Ronaldo(on the wings, mostly right), Tevez(suporting forward)
Rooney(Striker) Bench: Kuzczak, Neville, Pique, Carrick, Nani, Huntelaar, O’Shea
Silvestre, Saha, Fletcher and Park would all leave

I was at last years FA Cup 1/4 Final at Home Park.. Plymouth Argyle v Watford..best two players on the pitch were on loan (Scott Sinclair Argyle and Foster for Watford). Foster oozed class and pulled off a string of great stops. Looks as though he has great potential but now needs to be thrown into the deep end for some experience.
