Bolton Wanderers vs Manchester United: Preview

Manchester United make the short trip to the Reebok Stadium today to face Bolton Wanderers, knowing that by the time they kick off, both Arsenal and Chelsea could have leapfrogged the reigning champions due to their three o’clock starts. It is therefore imperative we get the three points against the Trotters and reassert our dominance over our title rivals.

A period of four fixtures that will probably define our season are coming up. Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Bayern Munich all after a tricky tie with Bolton. With these fixtures in mind, Sir Alex Ferguson may shuffle his pack and give a few fresher faces the chance to shine today.

Saying that, Edwin van der Sar will be the starting goalkeeper no questions asked. The 39 year old has looked back to his best since returning from injury and will look to keep a clean sheet after conceding last weekend.

At the back, Jonny Evans may get a run out in place of Rio Ferdinand or Nemanja Vidic with Rafael in line to take over from Gary Neville at right-back. Patrice Evra doesn’t seem to get a break at all and he will no doubt keep his place against Bolton.

United are without long-term absentees Wes Brown and John O’Shea, though the Irishman is back in training and should return to first team action soon.

Many would expect Sir Alex to go with a four-man midfield against Bolton, who are a weaker side, no disrespect intended, but it is more likely he will line up with five.

Nani will be buoyed from his contract extension, and should replace Antonio Valencia on the right side of midfield. Ryan Giggs only managed a cameo against Liverpool but should start here alongside fellow veteran Paul Scholes.

With so many big games on the horizon, Darren Fletcher should get a breather, so Michael Carrick will join the ginger ninja in the middle and Ji-Sung Park will no doubt continue to play in the attacking midfield role he has made his own in recent weeks.

Ferguson tried to play down fears that Wayne Rooney is carrying an injury,

“Wayne is fit and there’s nothing wrong with his knee,” Sir Alex stated.

Despite this, Dimitar Berbatov should lead the line today and will look to give a repeat of last season where he scored a 90th minute winner against Bolton at the Reebok.

Out for Bolton are Chris Basham, Gavin McCann, Sean Davis and Joey O’Brien, thought the do possess Kevin Davies who is a handful Chung-yong Lee and Jack Wilshere are young, technically gifted, and a joy to watch but keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen is likely to be given a touch day by United.

Manager Owen Columba Coyle has the Trotters organised in defence and playing some excellent football. He’s also made the Reebok Stadium a fortress, as Bolton have lost only once there since he took over and that was his first game in charge – a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal.

“We are in terrific form at the Reebok and if we show our spirit and desire and our undoubted quality, then that will serve us well,” he told reporters.

Interestingly, Bolton have scored the joint-highest number of goals from set-pieces in the Premier League this season – 21. Whereas, United have conceded the fewest number of set-piece goals in the league – 7.

However, United have won nine of the last 10 meetings against Bolton, and lost only one of their 10 Premier League games at the Reebok, so we have some good omens but a tough match will no doubt ensue.

Prediction: 1-0 United

Probable Line Up: van der Sar, Evra, Evans, Vidic, Rafael; Nani, Carrick, Scholes, Park, Giggs; Berbatov

  • i hope berba scores a winning goal with chelsea or in any of the coming games and becomes the reason for winning the cl or pl. may be then people can ignore his 30m price tag.he adds so much value to this team. he offers a copmpetely different dimension. we have valencia who thrives only on pace.we have carrick who doesnt have any pace at all.nani has been entertaining lately with his pace and his skills. fletcher has been greatest revelation for worldwide football this season.rooney has set his eyes and mind on the area between the two posts.park has shown his legs also can do some work, apart from his lungs.
it is very difficult for berba to adjust to the united system. maybe we used to play at high pace with ronaldo and rooney bursting their lungs, but these days we are not playing high paced football and it is completely wrong to blame berba slows us down. there is no one in this team who has his skill and creativity. may be giggs and scholesy can offer the same level of imagination, but they are not regular starters. berba offers a lot for the overall game,he has even improved his stats this season. there is no one on this team that has gives me so much of joy and delight for watching football.may be he disappoints a bit while watching the final scorecard. he always tries to involve in the gameplay rather than trying to get at the end of the move.last match he has linked up well with fletch and nani and created some beautiful moves. its not his fault that people around him do not have the vision to understand his game, it is fergies for not using his genius properly.

  • @redpenguin: This is what I hate about NewsNow mate, they occasionally allow old articles to be published. That article is ancient. That happened many weeks ago. Since then the team that has been continually linked with Neuer is Bayern because he likes them, they like him and because his long time girlfriend lives in Munich. Sometimes in situations like this, the girl has the pulling power, we’ll see.

I’d love Neuer but I would be as equally happy with Rene Adler. Personally, I do not see us signing a keeper this summer now that EVDS has signed a new one year contract. Problem with that is United will lose out on Neuer because if we don’t get him I guarantee you Bayern will. EVDS is fine but United need to go after a great keeper for the future when he is available and not when EVDS decides he is finished. And if they miss out on Neuer, they will regret it because Adler’s price tag will shoot up after Germany once again makes it to the final four of the World Cup like they do almost every four years. This will force us to settle for a lesser keeper like Akinfeev, Lloris or who knows who. For me there are five elite keepers. Buffon, Casillas, Frey, Adler and Neuer and then a lot of good ones. At the bottom of the list sit Ben Foster and the Aluminum Foil man from Arsenal as the worst the game can offer.

Buffon could be an option as i hear rumblings he could be interested in a move from Juventus. If so, I say go for him because as keepers go, he is still young and could give United 7/10 good years. But my heart is set on Neuer or Adler and I will be disappointed if we don’t get one of them. I hope Bayern also end up with one of them as they are my other team. Christ I am not looking forward to this CL tie. It will be murder for me.

  • @CraigMc: It’s got nothing to do with which league is stronger. FC Koln had room for him to play and he has enough skill to make a dent wherever he goes, except the EPL is a more physical league and his size becomes a question mark here. Also, despite talent, he never showed that he could make the grade for us and that may be because he lacked the confidence and the composure to handle the pressure and demands that Man Utd requires players to have.

At United it’s not just about raw talent but also mental strength. That is why it took Nani this long to finally get it. He needed to mature and find the mental strength to fight his emotions, United’s pressure and his own self doubts. Playing for Koln is no pressure whatsoever and Tosic is getting a chance to play for a team in a very competitive and quality league. Frankly, he is more suited for that league. Let him play there for a few years and establish himself and then we shall see. Right now he is a surplus we do not need because we have Nani, Park and Obertan not to mention Giggsy.

I wish Tosser all the luck in Germany. Playing time and a growing confidence will do wonders for him as it has done for burgeoning superstars like Bayern’s Toni Kroos who is arguably the midfielder of the year in Germany this year while on loan at Leverkusen. No chance of him staying at Leverkusen next year as he is the missing link for Bayern and the difference right now which will force them out of the Champions League. Bayern needs that strong midfielder in the middle and they don’t have one with great attacking skills. Hopefully Tosic will develop like that, because he does have skill.

  • This kind of stuff is certainly a step in the right direction and, although seen by many as a gimmick, does, I’m sure, reflect the mood of a good percentage of loyal fans throughout the UK.

I hope this idea gathers some momentum, and, of course, gives us all some hope for the future of our club.

  • @Redrich: Mate you are misunderstanding me completely. Yes I am defending Berbatov but I also made the pointy in my last post that I know I have been harsh and in some cases unfair to other players because of my own biases or as I would prefer to call them, preferences. However Giggs was not one of those players I have criticized. I love Giggs and always will. The player I have picked on unmercifully have been Anderson, Park, Scholes, Neville, Foster and last year Evra received a fair amount of abuse as did Saha before that. I do not apologize for it either because at the time they deserved it and in some cases like Anderson, they still do.

I am not in disagreement with the tactics Ferguson is currently using. All I’m saying is I don’t like them. They are not the way we have played for decades. We have always used two strikers but now we either play 4-5-1 on the road and 4-3-3 at home. And the reason I gave for it is the reason Fergie is holding to this tactical change. Fletcher does not have a world class partner in the middle that can allow Fergie to go with a 4-4-2. At the beginning of this decade he had Scholes and Keane and in the past he combos like Keane and Ince and Robson and Ince etc. Combinations that worked well and were powerful enough to easily say that two of them could do the job that Fletcher and two other could do today. If we are able to buy a Jack Rodwell and he develops as many expect him to, then that could allow Fergie to comfortably go back to 4-4-2. Until then, purists like myself will have to tolerate game plans that have only one striker up front. I will always prefer two because for me it’s all about attack.

Fergie is no idiot and I can see why he is doing what he is doing. Problem is that despite it all, I don’t care for it and I do believe that Berbatov has earned a starting spot with his play over the last couple of months, whether you agree or not. This “30 million Faux pas” as you call it is as unfair as you have ever been because the evidence shows that whenever Berbatov starts for us, we win. The fact he doesn’t float your boat is obvious but to call his contribution a failure when stats and raw evidence show that his contribution and more importantly, his presence on the pitch leads us to have more success.

I have no problem with you not liking him, but I also think you need to be more fair towards me. Yes I like him but if you go back weeks, months even into last year you will have read more than one post of mine that has been very critical of Berba. He’s far from perfect but my point has been that of late he has greatly improved his effort and overall game, and that he has been improperly used for a long time. He also was not giving the kind of effort last year and early this year that would help him overcome this tirade of hate that he receives from fans like yourself who are clearly looking for something completely different than what he brings to the table. A square peg trying to fit into a round hole is the analogy I was the first to use on this blog referring to Berbatov. His biggest problem was he thought the team should change to accommodate him. Well now he is changing enough to accommodate the team. That subtle change has made a difference in his game of late.

The point I am making here is he is hardly a flavor of the week or temporary cuddle up for me. He is a player I have admired for many years and has the kind of skill set that I love in a striker or midfielder. He is an acquired taste and as I despise white wine regardless of it’s quality, you dislike Berbatov for the same reasons, he is just not palatable for you. I understand that and respect that. But here is one thing I don’t get and please bare with me on this as I mean no offense to you as I think you know I have a lot of respect for you and like you Red. Red you are not giving him a fair grade when he plays well. Your negative feelings for him remain even in games where he does his best and delivers the goods. Say what you will about my negative attitude towards certain players but when they play well, I am the first to praise them and even admit shock and delight. I have done this with Park, Scholes, Neville and even Foster. With Anderson it has been far more difficult but even he has received glowing reviews from me for the odd game he played well. As for Evra, I have been glowing in praise for him all season and am relieved that he regained his form, because last year it was truly shite. So one thing is evident here mate, I am fair and honest with my criticism, praise and I am willing to admit being wrong or at least in giving praise on a game to game basis with individuals I do not feel cut it as Man Utd players.

All I ask you for is to be fair with Berba. You have a right not to like what he brings but when he plays well, he deserves better than the 5/10 or 6/10 you give him, when he was universally praised by nearly every media outlet for having had an 8/10 game. Keep your biases and beliefs like I keep mine, but just be fair when the situation warrants it. Berba deserves better than you are presently giving him. As for my love for the guy, I do not apologize for it as I believe in his world class status and his undeniable skills. Whether he can eventually be an automatic starter and contribute consistently to this team’s success is another thing. I hope he does but even I have my doubts over that. I still believe he would be a Balon D’ Or candidate if he were playing for a top team in Italy. Italian football suits him perfectly.

  • Looking over the fixtures, April is going to define our season. 2nd leg against bayern, Chelsea,Shitty and Spurs. All tough games and we have virtually no wiggle room. Not counting the Cl game we need 2 wins and a draw atleast. Of course 3 wins would be nice but that’s a tough task.

The fact we are in this position right now is incredible when you think about pre-season predictions. Some pundits even said we would drop out of the top 4!

Tough month ahead of us, but the title is there if we want it.

  • The next 3 games will be a good, stern test for the United’s, newly adopted, MF system.

Both Munich and Chelsea, use a very disciplined approach through the center of the pitch and I’m interested to see whether our spoiling tactics can disrupt their game plans.
Almost certainly, we’ll play 3 CMF’ers with Fletcher causing most of the disruption and Scholes marshaling the ball to our wide men.
As yet I’ve really seen no answer to this approach, but , of course, our European opposition is getting stronger and Chelsea always will provide a problem or two.

If we can succeed over the next 10 days, I’m really not sure that we can be stopped at all.

  • @Phoenix Red: Bro I have been saying this for ages. Glazers are money rapists, and I would be very much surprised if Man United wasn’t their SOLE source of income these days. David Gill has seemingly LIED thru his back teeth on every TV/Radio/Newspaper interviews he has done on this subject. He has said repeatedly that Man United are not responsible for the PIK’s, that is the Glazer’s personal debt. What he slyly forgot to say, was that the PIK though Glazer personal debt, the Glazers will still be using United money to PAY OFF their personal debts. Gill has proved to be a liar over and over again. There are some bloggers on ROM who will use all the fancy scripted posts possible to try like Gill to deny the INDEFENSIBLE! Truth is though, Glazers own bankers with those reports have made it indisputable that Glazer’s are taking United money to pay of their own personal debts, and their childrens and grandchildrens with ?? loans (who believes that?), those loans will turn out to be family gift heirlooms. No wonder Glazers are in it for the long haul, they are bleeding United dry, and if we do lose all our assets including OT and Carrington, all hell will break out from the fans who really care about our club. Gill says Man United are a well run club, yeah right? David Gill and all those who support him or the Glazers, should hold their heads down in shame. Despicable! Anybody who thinks the Glazers will stop at the Ronaldo money needs their head testing. Sorry!

  • @Grognard: I will say this, and then lets put it bed (for now, at least).

I have struggled for almost two seasons to wrap my head around his particular skills and how they can be helpful to us as a team. At a certain point he has exasperated my tolerance for what I look for in a United regular.
The small improvement that he seems to mustered over recent weeks, is certainly not proof positive, to me, that a corner has been turned and that the long, arduous, last 18 months can be forgotten and washed away with flurry of adulation.

However, I am not an unfair critic of any player, and if Berbatov continues on an upward curve, one that begins to show benefits for the team as a whole, I will certainly find good things say.
Who knows I might even join in with the choir, singing about his languidness!!

  • @Redrich: I don’t think you are ever going to come round to Berbatov, as he’s been playing excellently for the past months, yet you continue to dismiss it for less than its worth. I would also argue that he was playing as good last season, except for one part, that he scored less goals.

If berbatov does score in a major important game for us one day (not likely considering Fergie’s) people (you among) will suddenly start to cry for all and sundry how’s he’s vastly improved and is less the languid player he was.

Except that no, he’s just the same player, simply doing what he’s proved he was always able to do, but on a different stage.

  • @colver: Ok, the parts I agree with in this comment:

    1.He’s a creative/support striker.
2.He’s not the best at heading the ball.

Now to say that he’s not a fan of pass and move? Do you really mean that – for the player who’s currently the best creative passer in the side?
    Duh!

  • @NicoQB: Berbatov doesnt really play pass and move… for one he cant move as hes far too slow and he likes to take a few touches, have a look around, put in a pirouette or two and then play a 5 yard pass….I dont have a downer on him particulalry, although he has been found wanting in big games hence why he is usually benched, but the pass and move claim by Redrich is entirely correct in my opinion.

I also dont think he lacks confidence….in fact exactly the opposite….he thinks hes better than he his and is too pig headed to change his game to improve to the required United quality. Thats why he isnt picked for the big games. It beats me why people think Fergie doesnt pick players because of grudges….the same goes for Nani….once you get your head straight and put in performances then you get picked…simple really.

Correct me if I’m wrong but as far as I know I haven’t heard a peep from him complaining about being benched so often. All I’ve heard is things like “my best is yet to come” and him saying that he’s working hard to improve, which is something that I think he has done. He’s gained respect in my eyes for that.

Heres another tip; almost opposite the pub is a Middle Eastern restaurant called Aladdin – it looks like a kebab shop but the restaurant is at the back….its very popular with locals, its super cheap, the food is really good and most importantly it doesnt serve alcohol but you can bring your own so its a really good cheap option to eat before the game- 529 Wilmslow Road Manchester M20 4BA.

However I think he also probably realises the only way after United is down and hes already proved hes not Tevez and is not interested in going to somewhere like City just for the money.

  • @Redrich: Yes but mate, he has been doing great things in his last few games and you have not been fair or kind to him. 3 goals and an outstanding assist as well as some great touches in the last two games and from you one would think he stunk the joint up and was subbed off at halftime with no goals or assists. I fully understand what you are asking of him and what you want from a player because I too have my criteria checklist and players like Park and Anderson regularly fail that, but when they play well, even if it’s for just one game, I will praise them for that game. But for Berba their is no Red Lovin.

  • @NicoQB: The funny thing is that before he came to United he was an excellent header of the ball. Again I think his confidence and a few key misses are playing on his mind and have affected his heading as well as being rusty not playing all the time. The more he plays, the better he will get.

  • @Dominic: Rubbish! It is clear as day that he has changed elements of his game and decided to work harder at tracking back and moving into the box. Part of his improvement though has been Fergie letting him play more of his natural role rather than playing him too high and almost in an AMF position. He is spreading the play beautifully and his fisrt touch and retention has also improved which is funny because it was always great. He’s also showing more small bursts of speed which was witnessed by his headed goal last week as well as his great dribble, run and assist in that same game. He’s working as hard as he is capable of working

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @Grognard: OK well ‘rubbish’ is a bit disrespectful but lets move on…

I take your point but all these improvements you mentioned have been very recent and he needs to do it week in week out over the course of the season and do something in a big game – admittedly which he no longer gets picked for but thats another story (ie. against the top teams the need to control possession in the midfield and cover space in the attacking half when we don’t have the ball – Berbatov doesnt really fit the bill in this scenario and probably never will despite his recent more admirable efforts).

I am not blind I can see his performances have improved but he needs to do a lot more before he’s one of the first names on the team sheet..

If he was happy to play second fiddle and not demand wages way beyond his station then he would still be a valuable asset to United. As it is he is at the wrong club if he wants to prove anything to United….or maybe hes just happy being the top man at a second tier club as opposed to winning medals with a great team? Or maybe hes just a bit thick and is just after money?

  • @CraigMc: City are rotten from the top down….clueless owners, imbecile chairman, average manager, mercenary players and fans with a huge inferiority complex. They are never going to attract the best players because of their lowly status and the lazer blue kit…it will take a long time before that changes.

BUT they are going to be a lot harder to beat from now on so we can expect a few terrible moments in the next few seasons, or even the forthcoming derby? god forbid…

As for 4th I have a pathological hatred of Liverpool and I really want to see them crash and burn. I know quite a few City fans so I cant hate them too much, its nice to laugh at them from time to time but I would prefer them to get 4th over the scousers. Thats my opinion….which one would you chose?

Obviously I want Spurs to do it….they have always played good football and its a good away day at White Hart Lane, best fans in London I reckon. They have to play the top three in succession I think so I reckon they will probably fail at the last hurdle….again.

If I was to bet my life on it then I may just plump for Liverpool…although it kills me to do so!

  • @Dominic: my big m8 in work who uses this site (fred the red) says that too m8, but i just cant see them causing utd to many problems. especially if the injuries are true about robben and the other guy who i cant spell but sounds like a lager are true. and i am normally shiting myself when it comes to these stages of the champions league. personally i think the next round will be far harder, which sounds obvious, cause its a later stage. but i think a game against lyon( who i think will go through) will be far harder.

  • @RicoTheRed: Pint of Schweinsteiger please!

Yeah thats my problem, I dont like presuming we will win any game, especially champions league QF’s. We are playing away from home too which is never easy. Also they have Ribery who is outstanding and directly up against whoever we have at right back….most likely Gary Neville….and although hes playing well recently I am not sure if he can handle someone as good as Ribery these days.

Think your right, Lyon would be a tougher tie…if we get there? The wheels could still fall off in the next week so Im not counting my chickens!

@Dominic: City will win 4 of those games, draw one, and lose two. Chelsea will beat liverpool so liverpool lose one at least. That would leave City and Liverpool tied for 4th (assuming Tottenham/Villa/Everton do not win all their remaining games).

I would also rather see City get fourth than Liverpool. Of course Spurs should get it, if they can. But Liverpool NEED 4th to avoid losing playing and running into financial troubles… City do not NEED 4th financially and why not make the Manchester Derby more meaningful?

Scousers smell worse than Shitty fans.
