Bordeaux: Obertan wants to play for United

In today’s transfer news, this has clear come out of left field.

According to Bordeaux president, Jean-Louis Triaud, Bordeaux midfielder Gabriel Obertan is on the verge of signing for us.

“There is a very strong likelihood that the deal will go ahead. Manchester United want to sign him and, for our part, we would be delighted to see Gabriel playing for such a prestigious club. We will make the official announcement when the time is right.”

It is odd that a president would be glad to see the back of one of his promising talents. No transfer fee as of now has been known to be agreed. So there is still sometime to go before this deal bears fruition.

He’s a midfielder who can play across the midfield, even as a winger. Obviously for those of us who know little of French football, Youtube is our solace. Here’s a sample of him which shows him to be a little direct player, but clearly isn’t the finished product. However, we’d like feedback from those who follow French football.

RR – your headline is very misleading I think. Going back a couple of years, Obertan said “I don’t want to play for Arsenal or Man United, I like Spain and I love Italy. There are very good clubs in Italy with history, and I would love to go to them.” Another frenchman, another lover of Spain/Italy. I have no idea why Fergie keeps chasing those with NO DESIRE to play for us, if they had a choice of Spain and Italy. To be honest, SAF is pissing me off with this

We signed Owen and Franco FC got Benzema? Now we are going after N’Gog version 2 (l’Equipe compares him to the Scouse back-up). Can somebody please point me to logic? I am flabbergasted. Shit Fergie, I thought you had some sense… but Owen?

@Adam Axon: Keep in mind that this vid is from 2006 or early 2007. He’s still had two more years of development from what you see there, so there might be more to him than you see there. Also, he is 1.86m (6′3″) and 80kg (~170 lbs) which is quite big given our current squad size.

If it weren’t for some woeful finishing he’d have had 5 assists in that match alone. Looks equally as comfortable on either flank. Porbably won’t score alot of goals, but thats what strikers are for!

@Traverse: Looking at that, he reminds me of Walcott for some weird reason. He’s obviously taller, but has some of the same attributes (good dribbling, good pace, good crossing, weak shot). He also looks strong.

But 15 mil for the guy? I would hit Ferguson with a silver hammer. 10m at most, but I can see us getting him for a bit less than that.

Also about the wings, yea we have plenty of players but no class. With the possible exception of Valencia, we have no finished product. Tosic and Wellbeck are a while away from being first team players. Nani is a while away from being United quality. Park is a defender (sort of).

I’m quite keen on this obertan guy, he’s quick, strong, good with his feet. As i have said countless times on redrants, we are a rich club and even though 10-13 mil on this guy is way to pricey, its not the end of the world if he is a flop. My worry is that wesley snejider, (mind my spelling) de rossi, aguero ect are all not going to be available by the time we try and bid for them because some other team might have snapped them up. We need to start acting quickly, so our new players have time bonding with the squad during the summer when the football season hasn’t begun yet. I’m not a fan of yayayaya because he is slow and has the worst agility i have ever seen on a human being, i think we need a smaller midfielder, lower gravity sort of player (like de rossi or snejder) who isnt afraid of going into tackles. For our striking options, hunter is out of the option cause we got owen and fergie is probably thinking of getting a mid or wide player.

@Stephen: Maybe nani’s leaving. All our wingers can play down either side. Valencia’s alright but park and tosic aren’t strong, quality wingers. If nani goes we will be really lacking on the wings. Even if he stays, if he gets used as little as he did last season we’ll be lacking.

    ReplyReply
  43. RedDevilEddy says:

@Stephen: He is right footed, but he plays on the left wing. Just like Ribery who plays on the left, and Robben who often plays on the right. Wingers are more dangerous of they have the possibility of cutting inside to take a shot and or go outside and cross. Which makes Messi, Ronaldo and Ribery some of the best players in the world, their unpredictbaility and confidence. Besides, Ash is very good on his left foot so he would get some crosses in with that foot.

Obertan is very very fast and that is his main quality – but i dont think its enough for United and 10 mil. for him its too much. And he is too tiny, PL defenders will kill him.

But here’s the thing, what harm can it cause if we sign a second DM. We bloody need one.

And while we’re at it, perhaps sign a DM with a strong presence and some leadership traits. An aspect we all dearly miss after the departure of Keano.

  55. RedDevilEddy says:

@Stephen: Well if Young isnt a crosser then how is it possible that he has averaged more than 10 assists per season since he arrived at Villa? :???: Like I said, what makes the best wingers are that they are unpredictable when with the ball. They can beat an opponent and then pick a shot or a cross, which fools defenders.

Silva would be an awsome signing, if I could put up my transfer targets(realistic) it would be in this order:

    1. A. Young
    2. Silva
    3. Toure
    4. Palacios
    5. Sneijder

That’s exactly the type of player Fergie likes. Can play on either side, comfortable with cutting inside and interchanging with central players.
    Also he can score from wide, his record isn’t great(9 goals last season but loads of assists). So I can’t see why he cannt play in any system;
    4-4-1-1, 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3.

@Merlinus: The real truth behind their ability to do this is a ridiculous banking system in Spain that is willing to lend them over 200 million Euros in order for them to do what they need to do. It’s like the banks are Real Madrid fans and want to see Barcelona defeated. It’s scandalous. Lax tax laws and shelters also give them money to be be able to buy whereas in England, teams and players are taxed to the max.

Madrid have gone into severe debt and it’s a risk if say for example they were not to make next season’s Champions League. That won’t happen but wouldn’t it be nice if it did? They will be able to pay these loans off with more ease than United is paying their loans off but then again, buying all these players hasn’t exactly secured their very leaky defense and so I still feel that if player’s under perform or get injured, Real’s dream could implode in their face. Wishful thinking, but then again, nobody five years ago expected the problems at Liverpool and especially Valencia either.

The only way I can see it happen is if Nani is sold which knowing us we would give him away for a funsize Mars bar without giving the lad a chance, so maybe that is why I am somewhat down on Young and really believe the centre of midfield is a more pressing area we need to look at.

I have watched him play in only a few matches as Bordeaux is not a must watch team for me and in both cases he was not good enough to start but came off the bench and did sweet fuck all. He’s not even that fast and as RR, said he is a direct player which means he needs quickness and speed to survive and I see him doing little to beat French opponents. EPL opponents are much tougher and I see him being a mega failure. I see another Tosic here. Fuck Fergie is losing his mind, it’s clear to me now. This kid is worthless, believe me. If you want to attract the best young players (under 26) in the world you need to be a top contending team with aspirations in the Champions League. Nobody of any real quality under the age of 27 is interested in coming to Shitty so all their money is meaningless. They will buy unwanted players, retreads and outcasts or just plain washed up superstars on their last legs.

Their owners were hoping to create another Chelsea as the Blues were nothing also before Abramovich showed up. The difference is they play in London one of the biggest and most prestigious cities in the world. That is a selling point to players. United survive because of the reputation we have as a team that was built first by Sir Matt Busby and then further perfected by Fergie. Had Fergie had only moderate success in his tenure, we would be looking like Aston Villa or Everton right now. Good, but not good enough and certainly not good enough to afford or attract big name talent. And even this season, we are struggling to do that. That leaves Nani and Valencia, plus Hargo who is actually a defensive midfielder. But what if Nani or Tony gets injured? And they wont manange to play like Ronaldo, three games in a week. So a winger is a must, and it should be a top class player. I still believe the centre of midfield is the most important area, but lets see what happens becuase after Owen signing I can believe in anything.

@Stephen: There are too many people on this blog and by this indication too many football fans of Manchester United who do not understand the game fully. They watch the game but they do not really understand what they are seeing strategically or tactically. They have been brought up watching old style direct English football done to perfection in 4-4-2, with hard running and wide players crossing the ball in to tall poaching targets in the box. I say to these fans, no I plead to these fans to WAKE THE FUCK UP ALREADY for Christ’s sake.

How stupid can people be? Manchester United have been fully engrossed and embedded in a new tactical system of play that is a hybrid of English and European football for almost three years now. It really took hold with both coaches and players last season where we actually lost the English part of the game. It’s no longer a hybrid as much as it’s totally continental and more precisely Italian in nature. Slow ball control buildup, with bursts and plenty of even paced counter attacks. Today we play 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 or 4-2-2-2 or even 4-1-2-1-2 diamond. Long gone is the old style 4-4-2.

What is it going to take to educated the masses in the fact that we no longer play English style football and thus, our requirements for players has also changed. Note to fans, there is a reason why we no longer go out for the Stewart Downing’s, David Bentley’s and David Beckham type’s who are only really known for their crossing in live play. Those are old school English style players. Fergie is more into wingers who dribble a lot, cut in a lot and shoot or pass. Long direct balls and crosses is not what we are about any longer. It just amazes me how many people still feel that is what we are doing or what we should be doing.

Fergie is obsessed with winning the Champions League. Nothing else matters. And he has changed the chemistry, look and feel of our team in order to accomplish this mission. Playing traditional English football has been for the most part a failure for him in Europe and with Arsenal, Liverpool and especially Chelsea adapting to more European styles over the past decade, he has had to alter our style of play to contain those team and to give us the needed edge. So to some of you out there, I am not calling you stupid, just blindly ignorant to the facts. Please wake up and realize that the game you grew up with is gone. What we have here is a new world order of tactics and styles and we all need to recognize it and adapt to it or forever feel frustrated over our team’s inability to play like old school United teams.

Im starting to think fergie is working on something big right now. He is quietly lining up a monster bid for a player like Kun. I know it sounds like wishful thinking but I just refuse to belive that fergie who knows his squad better than anyone cant see the obvious holes in it. He iwll address the midfield by getting a toure or what not and then I think he will go for one more big signing.

Is that too bloody much to ask? There isn’t a pro in the country, and very few United fans, who believe that our MF isnt poor in comparison to other top teams and needs sorting out. If Fergie can’t see this, I despair!

@Cyclops-Red: Not worried about them whatsoever. Like Madrid, they are obsessed with finding stars in their front line but unlike Madrid, they don’t have the drawing power to get them. Even players like Eto’o and Terry who are on their last legs and on the wrong side of 26 don’t want to play for them. They will have to settle for the castoffs, the over the hill and the overrated. And wouldn’t it be nice if they actually signed some defenders too. My God how shitty can you get when your best defender is a useless git named Richard Dunne?  I spit on Man City and in doing so elevate their net worth.

@RedDevilEddy: please please saf play nani the boy just needs reassurance and his confidence will come up. i wonder what saf sat him so much for last season? I would love to see him and ando have breakout years and pick up the slack of ronaldo. If ando could pop his cherry and start to give us an attacking threat and nani could settle into the wing we really dont need anyone eltse… that is unless hargo is done.(touch wood)

I think it’s entirely possible that United are taking a “2nd bid” stategy into this transfer window.
Instead of over pricing a player with an initial bid, they could be allowing other teams to set the value and then counter with something that is closer to their own valuation.
Seemed to me that they approached the Benzema deal this way, and from what I gather, it almost came off for them!!

@Grognard: Shows how much you know about Spanish football…

Here we go : PEREZ is a Genius!

The man is worth 2 billion. He is the 397th richest man in the world.
So anybody who says he does not know anything about handling finances, knows NOTHING. He took over a small broken down construction company and tht company is now the biggest company in Spain. When Perez took over Madrid, they were the 18th richest club in the world. In 2 years -[2 YEARS]- they shot above Manchester United.

In 2000 real had elections … madrid had jus won 2 champions leagues and 1 league in last 3 years … yet perez promised the bernabeu faithful he’ll make real madrid the richest and improve revenues , buy the best player in the world and humiliate barcelona … fans voted him in …

july 5th 2000 – figo – ” i will never play for madrid. i love barcelona and i m the captain. how could i leave this club ”

july 14th – ” Real Madrid CF sign the worl player of the year and barcelona captain luis figo for 37 m pounds ( world record ) deal “

barca president – ” nobody has ever insulted me so badly . i will remember this and i will pay him back ”

perez sells real’s training ground to the govt for a highly inflated price ..
why ? cos he has big contacts in the govt of not jus spain but all of europe ..

then real win the league in 2001 and figo is tortured when he goes to nou camp … the sound recorded was enuf to sink a jet plane AND A PIG’s HEAD was thrown at him …

come end of season .. florentino perez promises to sign the best player in the world zidane ..

juventus – “real madrid can do all they want . we will not sell someone like zidane . zidane is a juventus player and will remain so at any cost”

zidane – “it s my childhood dream to play for real madrid . I would leave if real madrid reach an agreement”

(A little parallel to present day! )

a week later – real madrid CF reach an agreement for capture of zidane for record 76 m euros ( which is more than what was paid for kaka ) back in 2001 ..

    2002 was real madrid’s 100th year ..

during the presentation perez said ” zidane is someone born to play for real madrid. and his signing in 100th year of the club is very positive “..

zidane ” president i believe you payed too much for me . i m not worth that much ” …

may 2002 – zidane volleys home the greatest champions league goal of all time to make real madrid 9 time european champions and fifa award real madrid ” the greatest club of the 20th century award ” ( most prestigious award there is ) ..

zidane shud have won the ballon d or but does not, as ronaldo has a stunning world cup after recuperating from a 2 year leg break ..

Next, perez signs ronaldo for 52 m euros ..

real madrid hammer every team there is in the league … ronaldo wins the pichichi award in his first season. .. “real maul United” …

after 2003 .. having won 2 leagues n 1 european cup and having all the best players in the world … real are now the richest in the world … the whole world bows to them and perez is hailed as the mastermind ..

…(has to mentioned that the football on display was some of the best ever witnessed in history )…

Perez could have easily been the best president in History of Football.. But there was one small flaw..

//Continuing from the above post (had to take a leak)..

then .. the coach vicente del bosque’s contract runs out … perez refuses to sign any defensive players despite the coach’s insistence that the defense was very weak ..

on top of that perez says ” we need a change in style . we shud play a more expansive game. ” … hires carlos quieroz from manchester united as coach of real madrid ..

    buys beckham for 40 m euros ..

inspite of already having figo for that position .. since beckham wud sky rocket revenues ..

    starts real madrid tv ..
commercial contracts soar to an all time high ..

    PROBLEM :>

    ,
..makalele is paid 1/10th of team mates despite being one of the most imp players … a one man defense who had been bailing them out last 5 years ..

sells makalele to chelsea for peanuts refusing to raise salary of a ” defensive player ” ..

he says ” we will not miss makalele, he lacks technique, skill to take the ball past an opponent. he cant score . he passes sideways or backwards for a maximum of 5 – 10 yards ” …

plays beckham as central midfielder … sells morientes on loan to monaco and refuses to add a clause that wud block morientes from playing against real …

despite all this , real madrid hammer every team in their way …

    .. are now demolishing teams at will … winning games 5 -3 and 6 – 2 etc ..
    then …

march 2004 … real lead table by 15 points with 7 games remaining … quarters of copa del rey and semi final of champions league against monaco …

 fernando morientes knocks real madrid out of european cup !!!

real lose all the remaining games to end the season 3rd !!!..

..real lose the copa del rey to some lowly team ..

    ..and hires vanderlei luxombergo ..

.. still no defensive signings ..

..signs former european player of the year michael owen ..

..raul is not played outta position ..

    ..ego clashes in the team..

    ..real end trophyless again ..

    ..perez fires coach
    .. appoints guus hiddink ..
. fires him 2 months later ..

    .. hires n fires beenhakker in 2 months ..

    .. hires a manger for 23 days n fires him ..

barcelona defeat real madrid 3 – 0 at the bernabeu … profits are still high but the sporting institution is a mess ..

    barca win the double ..

also he cud have bought ronaldinho instead of beckham ..

When dinho was offered he refused to sign him because ” RONALDINHO LOOKED UGLY ” .. that was the FREAKING REASON!!! ..

They don’t sign defenders (Cannavaro was odd exception because he was poster boy and good looks  )..

then perez resigns saying ” club need a change in direction ” …

    ………………………………………………………..

..2009 perez returns as barca win treble and maul real madrid 6 -2 at the bernabeu …

    …says ” i will accomplish in one year wht i wud usually take 3 years ” …

    …”"”i have learnt a few lessons “”"”….

    ..makes sensible signings ..

    .. as always buys superstars..

(Signing of albiol is an improvement.. he has realised his mistake..)

..makes real madrid the world’s most talked about team … and all the grandeur tht comes with it …

..so as i said … he cud have been the greatest president of all time ..

..but he ruined it for himself ..

..But now is the second coming of THE MAN!!!…
    ..With a difference …

and why is he doing all this ?

…cos he s a real madrid fan who wants to recreate the days of de stefano and puskas and amancia and gento …

..i hope u know who santiago bernabeu is …

he s the greatest man in real madrid’s history …

..it ll take a miracle to ever equal that ..

..jus incase u didnt know the team of de stefano puskas etc won 5 european cups in a row and 7 league titles in a row !! …

..even now perez says i m jus trying to do what de stefano and santiago bernabeu did ..

..the best part is this …

..de stefano signed for barcelona ..
.. but real GOT him for themselves  ..

1930: The Bernabeu pitch now looks like an elaborate crazy golf course or a very easy to solve maze. I’m going to stick with the crazy golf course description despite the lack of any flags on the pitch.

1927: A Portuguese journalist in what I would describe as a Martin Bell-esque suit, is praising Ronaldo in an interview with Real Madrid TV. He is talking like an excitable combination of film character Bruno and golfer Ian Poulter as he tells us how much Ronaldo likes to win at bingo. Interesting times.

1921: The fans are filling the stadium as we see pictures of Cristiano Ronaldo at his medical in extravagant sunglasses. Jorge Valdano, Real’s sporting director, did not feel the need to make a similar statement.

1917: Live coverage is now under way on Real Madrid TV so we should be able to enjoy the atmosphere at the Bernabeu. Looks like a great night in the Spanish capital with a green stage ready to welcome Cristiano Ronaldo.

1915: The atmosphere is starting to build at the Bernabeu as we await Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival. All nine of Real Madrid’s European Cups are on stage so there is no doubt pressure is being put on the winger to help the Spanish giants return to the summit of European football.

I also believe real madrid have a really outstanding coach who if he is given the right to shape his way of playing the team madrid have an outstanding team. if they sign alonzo and ribery they will have the best side in europe along with barca. they have more quality than united with more better players in every area they just needed a coach who can shape it.

We may be heavily in debt, but I am never going to listen to people glorifying that mob in Madrid. Just because we haven’t got things right, doesn’t mean Madrid are doing things right. I would never want us to be going the Madrid way.

I would never want charity from the government to take care of our club. I saw you inviting me to comment on Obertan, but the simple truth is that I saw very little of him.

But after an odd hour of reading on him on french forums, here is my take on OBERTAN:

You all know by now that he was loaned to Lorient after failing to impress at Bordeaux.

As a matter of fact the one time I remember him in a game, he looked very uninvolved in the game, a bit unsure of what to do. But that may have been one of his off days.
However, he has a facial expression not inspiring self-confidence, a bit like old Silly Silvestre. Apart from that all agree that he has great potential, a natural dribbler.
But because I too knew not so much about him, I took my time to visit a few french footy forums and the general consensus is that of surprise – and not the pleasant kind. While people agree about his natural potential they are much more uncertain about his consistency, and will to succeed. for instance, other players like Gouffran – while not as naturally gifted – progressed to a point where they grabbed a place in Larry White’s starting line-up, while Obertan repeatedly disappointed to the point he was loaned at Lorient (the equivalent of a Hull City) where again he failed to lit up the scene.
Maybe it would suggest another case of lack of drive, or a suspect personality.
But they agree to a point that maybe Fergie will drive in him some of the self-belief necessary to make the grade, and nurture him right.

Another interesting reaction was that of surprise at lack of interest in Chamak – one of Bordeaux true stars; whereas a [relative] failure like Obertan is given interest by Man Utd.

Oh, and also he lacks final product – great dribbler, average to poor finisher.

From a personal point of view I’m saddened as it seems that Craig was right about Nani all along.

Would I be happy if he comes – not really. Valencia, Nani, Ljajic, and even the odd Park appearance, Tosic who apparently had a good Confeds tournament, Morrisson… When are they going to feature then…?

If Real fails the government, local council and ultimately the publc pick up the bill. Madrid continues as a club and starts to spend more than it can afford. This just continues. They buy all the best United players they can get their grubby hands on. This carries on for ever.

For your information, there is nothing that you wrote that I am not aware of except that much of it is open to many different interpretations of those events actually transpired. By all means kiss their ass all you like but just remember where who you are writing that pro Nazi propaganda for? I for one do not need to hear one positive thing about the Anti-Christ’s of football. The most evil, greedy, disgusting and vile entity in all of pro sports. The New York Yankees look like choir boys in comparison.

And don’t go comparing the great Madrid sides of the 60’s that had Puskas and Di Stefano with the rubbish and crap of today’s team. And I’m not even comparing them in regards to the team on the pitch but the organization and the pack of wolves that run the present establishment do not have an ounce of class compared to the way those old Real teams carried themselves both on and off the pitch. The present den of vipers survive on the good name that was created decades ago and that they are quickly destroying by the minute.

Only dumb and ignorant players and their fans are naive and stupid when it comes to seeing this two headed snake for what it is. They are vile and are menace to the game and an albatross hanging around the necks of La Liga, the Champions League and FIFA. Problem is they have always had good con men like Perez who can sell sand to an Arab and who always seem to be able to buy off the right people in the right governing bodies that help them get their influence around and help them get their way.

So take your Madrid love and stick it…….you know where. I for one do not appreciate it and I feel I can speak for many others who feel nothing but hatred and bitterness towards that club and that’s before we let them have Ronaldo. Waste your time and effort writing about things we appreciate or want to debate about, not about the so called merits of a known and hated enemy. Regarding the Glazers needing to be booted out by the government and FA, again, it seems you are not understanding how businesses run. If a government is to boot out a private owner from UK it means it has to boot out any businessman who buys a business property by leveraging debts. You are caught up in emotion. What the Glazers are doing may not necessarily be healthy for United, but asking the government to boot them out, is about the most ridiculous solutions I’ve heard. The FA can’t do anything about it either. The Premier League should have taken a stand against foreign ownership like the Bundesliga and had checks in place to make debt manageable. But it did not. So now there is no point crying over it. You are targeting the wrong set of people. The Glazers did it because the rules allowed them to rack up this debt.

the glazers could not care for no one 300 million whats that its nothing. if united went under we united fans have more to lose than the glazers they will selll the club and easily get that 300 million back. they have bought the club on tick basically

@Red Ranter: The reason I think Ronaldo will flop at Real is because of the bad management, the big egos at the club and because he has this “vision” of the Spainsh League that I believe to be untrue. At United he was the heart, and he was one of few witha huge ego. At Real there will be Benzema, Ramos and more, and he wont have that family feeling he had at Madrid. Like he has said various times, his relationship with Fergie was vital for his performances. He will never find that another place, and especially not at Real!

If United have to sell the club at a loss the Glazers lose their money.
Mike Ashley bought Newcastle for over £200m and is now looking to offload the club for £100m. Believe it or not we are actually one of the best managed clubs (both on the field and off).
Our danger is if we drop out of the top four and don’t qualify for Europe.
Selling Ronaldo to service our debt makes no business sense so you are listening to dooom merchants. SAF will not waste that money in this over inflated market. He will wait till the right player becomes available at the right price. This may take 12 months.

Even today, they have more clout with the Spanish banks and the government than all the other Spanish clubs combined and that includes Barcelona. I haven’t got a negative thing to say about Barcelona. They are a class organization that runs it’s business aggressively but with class, respect and honor. Real Madrid are a disgrace to the game. What used to be the greatest club in the world is nothing more than a clown act and dog and pony show these days. Perez and the clown shoes before him have no clue what it takes to build a successful and respected team. They operate like kids playing Football Manager and using the cheat editor to get their way. And it has led them to nothing in the past 7 years and that will continue. They have no idea or concept on the elements needed to build a good team. It’s not about just buying Galacticos. It’s about role players and balance, it’s about discipline and dedication of everyone concerned towards the team, and not their many extracurricular activities. It’s not all about marketing and delusions of grandeur. What really makes me laugh is how absolutely dumb as nails their fans are and how gullible and obsessed with the circus they all seem to be. The banks alone in Spain seem to allow Madrid incredible amounts of credit where Barcelona who is just as big, doesn’t get nearly the same kind of consideration. Then again, Barcelona have never been quite this irresponsible. Madrid is truly an evil empire, there is no hiding that fact and you don’t have to be a bitter and angry United fan to realize it if you read around and hear the many many stories of their skulduggery from the past.

What bothers me is their tapping up of players, their inside contacts and favors from UEFA and from FIFA, most notably those autorities looking the other way when Madrid breaks the rules, their arrogance and greed as wellas their lack of respect for opposing teams in negotiating transfers. They also are highly irresponsible and negligent in the way they spend money and borrow it indiscriminately at a time when the world is financially suffering a major crisis and billions are out of work and starving. They send nothing but a negative message about how to run and operate an organization that is part of a larger more important organization and entity. And lets not forget that they kiss FIFA’s and UEFA’s ass and ask for favors while always threatening to be the leaders of the separatist Euro Super League movement. Simply, there is not one positive thing that can be said about this team other than they have Klaas Jan Huntelaar at present. I mean, I even hate their boring as hell drab white kit. @steve: Keane over Scholes, Essien over Iniesta. Why? Because the job of a defensive midfielder is the backbone of a succesful team. Barcelona=Yaya Toure. Chelsea=Essien. We can also look to the past! United=Keane. Real=Makelele. And so on. A defensive midfielder is proabbly the most vital asset you can have in your team, because if he is good enough he should be able to break up an attack and then start a counter. Strikers and winger are supposed to create and score the goals, it is very rare that you see succesful teams score most goal through the middle. Its more often around or on the break. I would take Keane over Scholes any day, and I would take Essien over Kaka, Iniesta or Gerrard as well.

@Red Ranter: Strikers are important. Defenders are important. Goalkeepers are also important. But midfielders are the most important players a team can have. They set the pace of the game, they create attacks and they stop them. In my mind defensive midfielders are what makes a team. Of cource you have the other players, which are almost equally as vital. But if you have a player that can stop attacks, start attacks and be mentally prepared to take a foot in your crotch for a win you are doing the proper footballing job.

I doubt that I am the only one who thinks that Chelski would be an entirely different team in the first half of the season if Essien was fit. Its very rare that I admire players of rival clubs, but when somebody with the quality of Essien plays for another team I just cant stand it when I remember that United actually had the chance to sign him. My thoughts of the defensive midfield role may be sort of biased, as it is the role I play. But my entire life I have been tought by masters such as Keane and my coach. Keane, as my role model, and my coach as guidance. Furthermore, Pelligrini will never (ever) be able to contain the gigantics egos in the locker room. If Sir Alex Ferguson could not contain C. Ronaldo completely, do you really think this Pellegrini fellow, whose impressive résumé of clubs includes Villareal and River Plate will be able to do it?

After all these years of Real Madrid buying our players, I’ve realized that the one signing they would have dreamed to have is The Gaffer himself. They love and idolize those who were built or polished by Sir Alex.

Anyway, I strangely believe this second era of the galacticos will not do as well as everyone seems to think. The Evil Empire shall realize what makes Barcelona so dominant. They are a team. I belong to Jesus Kàkà will have a very had time to settle in Palpatine’s Madrista, I believe. There are no Gattuso, Maldini and the such in Madrid. Raùl, you say? I don’t think he is so happy about what is happening. The King is dead, long live the King!

Whereas Manchester United cherishes his old stars (as seen by the care given to Scholes and Giggs), Madrid throws them unceremoniously to the bin. C. Ronaldo has been given the 9 of Il Fenomeno. Who cares? The other is a has-been washed-up.

The Glazers are fine. The only teams we cannot compete with on the transfer market are those backed by billionaires and those backed by corrupt governments. The money is there to spend I am sure. Fergie is just too narrow minded and the few players he fancies are unavailable.

The problem is a poor scouting network and a transfer policy which centres around Fergie who for all his management skills does not really have much of an eye for hidden talent-his skill has always been identifying long-term targets, tracking them, waiting till they mature and then buying them (at grossly inflated prices!).

That is why we have this ridiculous situation where we have £80 million in the bank and so far have only bought Valencia and Owen…who add a bit of depth but no real quality to a squad depleted by the loss of the best player in the world.

In 2006/07 we dominated easily, that was probably the best title.

In 2007/08 we won the title on goal difference, because I imagine Chelskis draw at home to Bolton as nothing more than giving up. It was probably our best season as an attacking side, but if you think back we played many games in the latter stages of the season with a 3 man midfield. Hargreaves was our DM most of the time, when not Anderson and Carrick. And we could easily have lost to Chelski in the Champions League final, only faith stopped them there.

This last season, I have time and time again said my dissapointment of our play. We failed epicly in the big games, only winning 5 out of 18 points. We won the League cup against Spurs, and on penalties! LDQ, my local team could probably beat them! And we paid for not having a powerhouse in the Champions League final, as Xavi and Iniesta run ragged. Up until that game we had played witha trio of Carrick, Anderson and FLETCHER, who worked as our DM. Now we all dont rate FLetch very highly, and we do need a great DM. Your statement of us not playing with a DM these last three seasons is wrong, as Fletcher, Hargraeves and Anderson have all covered that role in our major games. Hargreaves has done the best job, and we missed him a lot this season.

Remember, a club like UNited has to show ambition. We always want to be the best, and do it in the best possible way. I think we need a DM, since Hargo wont probably come back fit enough. If we wanna be the best, we gotta be complete!

I just hope that this tactic will come bite them on the ass when those “fans” finally get bored of following football.

One thing that causes me to have high hopes for Real to fail next season is that they have no true midfield maestro (that I’ve heard of). Galacticos I worked because Zidane made the clockwork tick. Barcelona 2009 have not one, but two maestros. United with Carrick has a maestro-lite. But Real??? Let’s hope the Fail with a capital F!

@steve: Moutinho for me reminds me of scholes a bit, well obviously the scholes of a few years ago. Thing about him is he doesnt score much and he aint a DM so tbh hes not really a player we need i guess. Hes more a creative midfielder as you say in the xavi/iniesta mould, now im not saying i wouldnt want the next coming of those 2 players of course not, but right now what we need is an AM who will get us atleast 10 odd goals or a DM enforcer and unfortunately moutinho falls into neither category which is a shame cos say 2 years ago he was exactly what we needed.
Im not sure about his goal stats, i think theyre like on average 4 or 5 goals a season which isnt much more than what we get from say carrick. Great player granted but i think a sneijder would be more suited to us right now, but thats just my opinion but i do agree with you mate he is an excellent player and is the most similar player to scholes of say 3 years ago or a xavi type i have ever seen. If though he could score a few more goals i would defo snap him up.

@Jay wire: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder mate. I prefer the continental style to that of the old English style. I always found the English game boring as sin after you got past the first three or four top clubs. The direct approach with no imagination or creative flair. Long balls and crosses is all that there was. The Italian version of the Continental game is not great either. It is far too cautious and slow for my liking but it does allow for creativity and individual expression within limits. I prefer it to the way Bolton or Wigan play. The approach to the game I have always favored is the Continental interpretation by the Dutch and Germans. Hard work, graft mixed with individual expression, flair and South American technique.

Matt how many midfielders who are attacking can get 10 goals a season. he is 21 22 and he scores I say 5 or 6 a season he can only get better in my view. our CM players do not get forward and unlike anderson he does know where the back of the net is, he has far better control his passing is crisp calm collective on the ball he knows the role inside and out.

anderson I will say time and time again is not a CM player he cannot do the role he is a second striker shifted into midfield.

and in my view we have 2 players who are fit enough who never let the team down week in week out to play CM carrick fletcher. scholes is almost at the end anderson is out of position and is hargreaves ever going to come back I doubt it so we are light in CM.

I have to say a lot of ppl are not considering how good our team is currently.Yes we lost the 2nd best player in the world and a very good forward as well but I think we are all going to be shocked by the contribution of the muched adored and loathed Count.Berbatov I strongly believe is going to be one of the best players in the league this coming season. And in Europe too.His partnership with Rooney is going to be stuff of legends. Why?No more pressure of being the subject of a transfer deadline day saga.He is going to be supremely prepared due to a proper pre-season with the whole squad. He now has a good understanding of the ManUtd game. Most important of all he has two less selfish players to deal with. That’s the most important part of his game.He thrives when playing with selfless players. The same way Riquelme or Henry does.If you are clear I’ll pass to you and if I’m clear you pass to me.I believe the reason why Berbatov was unable to score so many goals was because of selfishness.Same thing that the Rude Good Great Van Nistelrooy allegedly complained of The Slave.

Now playing in tandem with the world’s most selfless sportsman,he is going to thrive. To me Berbatov is like a supreme playmaking Ruud.He is lethal in front of goal and is very inventive in the Riquelme mould. My opinion is Saf should play Rooney in front of Berbatov with the latter holding the ball up as he usually does so brilliantly and the former running into the spaces he usually finds effortlessly.I think this could turn out to be a great season in my very optimistic opinion

A true United fan would not have said the things he said because he would feel bitterness and rage over the way Real raped us over the years and because he knows that right now, that would be poor form to rub that shite in our faces.

I can bloody well say this and mean it. If my other love Bayern Munich had pulled off the Ronaldo move in the manner that Real did, then I would have disowned them and I mean that. My first love is United and as much as I love Bayern, they need to know their place and respect the Red Devils. To be honest, I wasn’t particularly happy in the way the negotiations for Hargreaves went. United did a good job of pissing off Munich until Charlton came over to speak with Beckenbauer and calm the tattered nerves of the Germans. That threatened to damage the great relationship the two clubs have had historically which I being a fan of both have been very proud of. One thing is for sure, I could never be a fan of a team that could be as unethical, duplicite, evil and vile as Madrid have been to us and to others. Maybe hes not the player others on here will feel kaka is, but for me kaka is very over rated and if im honest i would pick wesley over him, i know fergie never buys madrid players but if he doesnt go for him i will be severely pissed, even more so if as reported he goes to chelsea, he is perfect for us.
But anyway steve going back to your point it is true there are a lack of goal scoring midfielders and you are maybe right, maybe i was over criticial 5 or so goals a season minimum at sporting in a few years could lead to double that. Its true there are a real lack of central midfielders who can get into double figures, so i dont know maybe a few goals chipped in by moutinho wouldnt be so bad.
This for me settles an argument a few were having an hour or so ago about which type of player is better or something to their team. I love essien but for me you pick up a real quality DM for more places than you can a AM. Lets face it you want a goal scoring mid you have gerrard, lampard, sneijder, diego, say fabregas on a good year, and maybe a few others. Compare that to the top quality DMs you can pick up like flamini, gattuso, essien, mascherano, hargreaves, palacios, lassana diarra, yaya toure just to name a few and you can see that whilst essien may be a world class player in his position you can pick up an atleast very good DM from a lot of places but the amount of goal scoring midfielders is in short supply these days which to me seems a sign of the times, cos most teams play with defensive minded CMs anyway.

As for sneijder well hes the player i want most, i would pay up to £30m for him and the beautiful thing is hes going cheap, i mean he aint gonna be getting much games at real is he, i think they even took his bloody number off him and gave it to someone else the bloody cheek. And as for huntelaar well hes just a world class striker, but from what ive heard hes off to AC with luis fabiano so it sounds like only sneijder is available to me.
Anyway for me theres only 5 players i would be remotely interested in singing right now tbh: aguero, sneijder, yaya, fabregas and ashley young but thats just my opinion but i would sneijder top of that list and be fully prepared to give him the number 7 and full FK and penalty duties cos hes that good, and the most realistic off that list, im sure he would come tomorrow if fergie wanted him enough, dont reckon we’ll get him though more is the shame.

If we’ve picked up Obertan for £8 million it is a good deal. He sounds like he is the same sort of level Nani and Anderson were when we bought them for double the price. My main concern when I heard we were interested in this guy is we’d be suckered in to paying close to £20 million for unproven talent just like we did with Anderson and Nani.

So it would seem we now have Nani and Tosic manning the left wing and Obertan and Valencia manning the right wing. I pray to God this means Rooney never has to play on the wing again and can show the world how good he can be when played in the correct position.

Now we just need to buy a defensive midfielder to cover for Hargreaves if he’s gonna be injured all season, and ideally also an attacking midfielder who can score goals and create chances and impose himself a bit more than Carrick.

“@Red Ranter: If Michael Essien was to go single handedly against Spurs I would predict a 3-2 win for Essien. “

Dont you think you’re exagerating just a tee-wee bit here????

I think it would be more like 5-1 for Essien. And, I’m sure he’d have things wrapped up after about 15mins. Their goal would come after he substituted himself.

@Karl: I was trying to be fair to Spurs as well, I’m not completely won over with Essien’s goalkeeping skills yet.
