Bordeaux: Obertan wants to play for United
In today’s transfer news, this has clear come out of left field.
According to Bordeaux president, Jean-Louis Triaud, Bordeaux midfielder Gabriel Obertan is on the verge of signing for us.
“There is a very strong likelihood that the deal will go ahead. Manchester United want to sign him and, for our part, we would be delighted to see Gabriel playing for such a prestigious club. We will make the official announcement when the time is right.”
It is odd that a president would be glad to see the back of one of his promising talents. No transfer fee as of now has been known to be agreed. So there is still sometime to go before this deal bears fruition.
He’s a midfielder who can play across the midfield, even as a winger. Obviously for those of us who know little of French football, Youtube is our solace. Here’s a sample of him which shows him to be a little direct player, but clearly isn’t the finished product. However, we’d like feedback from those who follow French football.

@Grognard: The reason we lost that tie to Milan was because Alan Smith started neither game.
I believed it then, and I believe it now.

I have to say a lot of ppl are not considering how good our team is currently.Yes we lost the 2nd best player in the world and a very good forward as well but I think we are all going to be shocked by the contribution of the muched adored and loathed Count.Berbatov I strongly believe is going to be one of the best players in the league this coming season. And in Europe too.His partnership with Rooney is going to be stuff of legends. Why?No more pressure of being the subject of a transfer deadline day saga.He is going to be supremely prepared due to a proper pre-season with the whole squad. He now has a good understanding of the ManUtd game. Most important of all he has two less selfish players to deal with. That’s the most important part of his game.He thrives when playing with selfless players. The same way Riquelme or Henry does.If you are clear I’ll pass to you and if I’m clear you pass to me.I believe the reason why Berbatov was unable to score so many goals was because of selfishness.Same thing that the Rude Good Great Van Nistelrooy allegedly complained of The Slave.
Now playing in tandem with the world’s most selfless sportsman,he is going to thrive. To me Berbatov is like a supreme playmaking Ruud.He is lethal in front of goal and is very inventive in the Riquelme mould. My opinion is Saf should play Rooney in front of Berbatov with the latter holding the ball up as he usually does so brilliantly and the former running into the spaces he usually finds effortlessly.I think this could turn out to be a great season in my very optimistic opinion

@steve: Anderson is a 2nd striker???? That must be why the worldwide catholic church are lighting candles in their local churches that God would help Anderson to just score 1 goal
. I have no idea how Andie would get a striker role, 2nd striker or not

Grognard I will give you one name that no one was sure of fernando torres. were people really saying before his move he is the worlds best striker. do not say teams bid for him because no one were going head over heels to sign him. he did not even leave atletico until he was 23. I think moatinho would be a far better player in the team than out of position anderson.

@steve: I doubt that Andy will ever manage to be a second striker. A playmaker, that is what he is. He is very attacking minded, he does play some incredible through passes and he can dribble with speed. He is an AM, although one who doesnt travel in the box a lot. Ive waited for Fergie to use Andy as a playmaker for a while now, and hopefully this will be that season.

@NicoQB: Merlinus needs to hang out at Madrid blogs because he clearly is only a fickle United tv fan. A true United fan would not have said the things he said because he would feel bitterness and rage over the way Real raped us over the years and because he knows that right now, that would be poor form to rub that shite in our faces.
I can bloody well say this and mean it. If my other love Bayern Munich had pulled off the Ronaldo move in the manner that Real did, then I would have disowned them and I mean that. My first love is United and as much as I love Bayern, they need to know their place and respect the Red Devils. To be honest, I wasn’t particularly happy in the way the negotiations for Hargreaves went. United did a good job of pissing off Munich until Charlton came over to speak with Beckenbauer and calm the tattered nerves of the Germans. That threatened to damage the great relationship the two clubs have had historically which I being a fan of both have been very proud of. One thing is for sure, I could never be a fan of a team that could be as unethical, duplicite, evil and vile as Madrid have been to us and to others. There is no living with some people’s bad taste.

Craig ask grognard that is how anderson made his reputation has a player the dynamic box of tricks forward. he was said to be the next ronaldinho who had it all. at porto he played the second striker and did you notice when he has played alongside flecther and carrick who carricks calm playing style on the ball, and fletchers aggressive style anderson has looked better because he has not had so much to do in a midfield 2.

@Traverse: In England Germans are not overly popular even though it’s been 65 years since the last war that pitted the two nations against each other, but I must admit, I love Germans and Germany. Even the anal retentive, control freak types that must have things done in a certain way. They are efficiency fiends and you need official papers to walk across the street in Germany. Sticklers for efficiency. Perhaps that is why their country looks so beautiful and is so clean. Fotunately my Greek relatives and friends aren’t reading this or they would disown me.

@Jay wire: Berbatov will be much better without Ronaldo. Ronaldo was very selfish and never utilized Berbatov properly and never supplied him with quality passes. Berbatov was asked to track back and play more of an attacking midfield roe so that Ronaldo could slip in more and be a striker for his goals and his ego enhancement.

@Grognard: But that tends to be when playing bigger clubs. When they play teams of an equal stature the games are always fast and furious attacking football*.
Villa, Spurs, Mercenary Citeh and Everton all go at each other. I can’t remember a boring game between them. Everton / Villa especially.
The teams below them against each other also. Obviously the bottom 5 or so get in the habit of trying to defend more than attack in numbers, but I’m sure that’s true of most leagues. Nobody just goes out to rollover.
*excludes Bolton and Blackburn….

@steve: I am certain wesley sneijder would guarantee us at least 10 goals a season, AT LEAST. I just firstly cannot believe that madrid have taken his place in the team and given it to a player who imo is very over rated in kaka, and have then put him onto a supposed transfer list cos they feel he isnt needed, just bloody madness. Maybe hes not the player others on here will feel kaka is, but for me kaka is very over rated and if im honest i would pick wesley over him, i know fergie never buys madrid players but if he doesnt go for him i will be severely pissed, even more so if as reported he goes to chelsea, he is perfect for us.
But anyway steve going back to your point it is true there are a lack of goal scoring midfielders and you are maybe right, maybe i was over criticial 5 or so goals a season minimum at sporting in a few years could lead to double that. Its true there are a real lack of central midfielders who can get into double figures, so i dont know maybe a few goals chipped in by moutinho wouldnt be so bad.
This for me settles an argument a few were having an hour or so ago about which type of player is better or something to their team. I love essien but for me you pick up a real quality DM for more places than you can a AM. Lets face it you want a goal scoring mid you have gerrard, lampard, sneijder, diego, say fabregas on a good year, and maybe a few others. Compare that to the top quality DMs you can pick up like flamini, gattuso, essien, mascherano, hargreaves, palacios, lassana diarra, yaya toure just to name a few and you can see that whilst essien may be a world class player in his position you can pick up an atleast very good DM from a lot of places but the amount of goal scoring midfielders is in short supply these days which to me seems a sign of the times, cos most teams play with defensive minded CMs anyway.

Lead story in the Sun, OBERTAN passed a medical at Carrington yesterday, and is due to sign a 4 year contract today
. He is costing us 8 million
. He thought he could return home after the medical, but was told he had to stay and train with the team today. That’s the only bit which doesn’t ring true, because the players don’t supposedly return to training until Wednesday!
Also, SAF has supposedly gone back to Real Madrid for, wait fot it Grog – Huntelaar. SAF has been watching him for over a year apparently, but had plumped for Benzema, as he wasn’t quite convinced who would fit into our system better. He will cost us 20 million, the amount Real M paid for him. Inter Milan have gone in for him too, so it will be down to where Hunter wants to move. He turned down a 32 million move to Man City not so long ago, because he said they were the wrong Manchester club! So wonder if this is true then Grog.

@Traverse: The lack of individual skill and finesse on those lesser clubs makes game unwatchable for me mate. I like finesse and creativity. They may go at each other but they rarely offer me a Riquleme fan, what I am looking for from the game. I love watching artists work, not plummers.

Matt how about united make cheap offers for robben scjneider and hunteleer and we will have the cash to left over to replace our ageing stars. its not about burning the 100 million its about spending it wisely forget about ribery get the se three surely we can get them for under 30 million when madrid deperatly want to get rid.

@steve: Oh yes mate, all 3 of those u mentioned are absolute quality and we could probably pick them up for no more than £40m. Robben though it sounds like real may be keeping after all now that it sounds like ribers aint coming but still i heard before he was on this list of players real wanted rid of and he would probably only have cost £10m, he would be a better option than this french guy whos coming in apparently for a similar price and from what ive seen of him im not too impressed.
As for sneijder well hes the player i want most, i would pay up to £30m for him and the beautiful thing is hes going cheap, i mean he aint gonna be getting much games at real is he, i think they even took his bloody number off him and gave it to someone else the bloody cheek. And as for huntelaar well hes just a world class striker, but from what ive heard hes off to AC with luis fabiano so it sounds like only sneijder is available to me.
Anyway for me theres only 5 players i would be remotely interested in singing right now tbh: aguero, sneijder, yaya, fabregas and ashley young but thats just my opinion but i would sneijder top of that list and be fully prepared to give him the number 7 and full FK and penalty duties cos hes that good, and the most realistic off that list, im sure he would come tomorrow if fergie wanted him enough, dont reckon we’ll get him though more is the shame.

If we’ve picked up Obertan for £8 million it is a good deal. He sounds like he is the same sort of level Nani and Anderson were when we bought them for double the price. My main concern when I heard we were interested in this guy is we’d be suckered in to paying close to £20 million for unproven talent just like we did with Anderson and Nani.
So it would seem we now have Nani and Tosic manning the left wing and Obertan and Valencia manning the right wing. I pray to God this means Rooney never has to play on the wing again and can show the world how good he can be when played in the correct position.
Now we just need to buy a defensive midfielder to cover for Hargreaves if he’s gonna be injured all season, and ideally also an attacking midfielder who can score goals and create chances and impose himself a bit more than Carrick.

I don’t buy the Huntelaar rumours. In Fergie’s mind Owen is going to replace Tevez and is going to be a third striker playing a limited number of games, Rooney and Berbatov are going to play most of the games and Welbeck and Macheda will get some chances as well. I also don’t think Real will sell to us. They do not want to strengthen their rivals if at all possible. Huntelaar will go to AC Milan Im sure of it.

@Craig Mc: Maybe they’re just going to unveil him today. We didn’t get pictures of Valencia coming out of the hospital like we did for Owen, just reports it had happened and then the confirmation of his signing. Obviously the Owen story was much bigger news, so the SkySportsNews cameras were all over it. I look forward to seeing Obertan with the shirt tomorrow

colver whats wrong in having 4 strikers like rooney hunteleer berbatov and owen. welbeck can be used on the wings, the italian is nowhere near ready and is berbatov really a long term success.
I mean if a front four of valencia robben on the wings who can actually offer good service for hunteleer owen rooney berbatov. rooney playing off hunteleer or berbatov and we can bring on owen berbatov and schneider at times has impact, we will be even a bigger problem for title rivals than when we had ronaldo. that is how you replace ronaldo sign owen schneider hunteleer robben valencia plenty of good players for good prices but fergies stubborn attitude towards madrid he will not do that.
anyone thinks a front four of
valencia robben rooney hunteleer is has good as a dream team and can match real madrids galacticos of ronaldo benzama kaka also add our bench if we got those players.

@colver: Its possible Colver, because United have always in the past had 4 really good strikers to interchange. Also, I feel that SAF is not going to play Michael Owen more than 25-30 games, and so Huntelaar would be a good addition and would get games. Real may not want to sell, but really players and agents will get their way in the end. Look what is happening to Barca with Eto’o digging his heels in, and only agreeing to what he wants

@steve: I agree, when it comes to strikers, the more the merrier!!
They are injured, and fall out of form more than any other set of players. The idea of having plenty of backup here makes much sense.
By the way, steve, would you do us all a favor and spend more time punctuating and formatting your posts. After all you do make some good points,,…. I think!!

@colver: Your last paragraph is what I hope for too!! We do not have an imposing CMF that can add to our striking threat, and without Hargo, we don’t have one that can defend consistently either.
I would bet that Obertan will not produce in his first season, so this signing, if true, is for the future. But, still, this might show that SAF has his eyeballs focused on what, we all, perceive as a weakness!!

Redrich ok I type so quickly I dnt bother checking I will in the future. I just do not think rooney berbatov and owen is a good enough strike force. Rooney is twice the player owen and berbatov will ever be and we really need a central striker. if rooney got injured is anyone really worried that owen and berbatov upfront is just not a strike force that puts the fear into teams. also we really need to juice up the attacking area up with schneider a dynamic wide player like robben that will give us the quality to retain the title.

@Craig Mc: The Sun? Bro you should know better than to trust the Sun and the other site I read it from, that being the infamous Tribal Football. Those are just crap rumors. Although I would love to see it come true. Add Huntelaar and Toure to the addition of Owen, Valencia and that Frog and it’s a banner rebuilding job after losing Ronadlo and that piss ant Carlito. However, not Huntelaar or Toure, and we are looking right into the abyss.
