Can Alexis Sanchez play in the Champions League and FA Cup?

Earlier this evening Manchester United confirmed the signing of Alexis Sanchez from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The Chilean superstar has joined us in a straight swap for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Sanchez is believed to have signed a four-and-a-half-year contract at Old Trafford, although the club have yet to confirm this.

The transfer saga had been going on all month, with Manchester City initially favourites to sign the 29-year-old.  However, it was Jose Mourinho who won the race today.

Alexis Sanchez will join to our attacking unit which includes Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard.  It is expected that he will play on the right-hand side of a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation but only time will confirm this.

Our next fixture is this Friday’s FA Cup fourth round tie at League Two strugglers Yeovil Town.  This marks the first opportunity for Alexis Sanchez to make his Manchester United debut as he is not cup-tied.  The Chilean did not feature in Arsenal’s 2-4 exit at the hands of Nottingham Forest earlier this month, therefore meaning he is eligible to play for us in the remainder of this season’s competition.

Next month we take on Sevilla in the second round of this season’s Champions League.  Likewise, Sanchez will be available for us in this season’s competition as Arsenal did not qualify.  Although the Gunners are in the Europa League, players are allowed to make the step up from UEFA’s second European club cup competition into the Champions League, but not vice versa.

Therefore, Alexis Sanchez is available to face Sevilla and any future opponents in this season’s Champions League.
