Cantona: Domenech’s the worst coach since Louis XVI

We continue to edge closer to United related news, but this was too difficult to pass up. When the King speaks we have to listen:

“I think that Raymond Domenech is the worst coach in French football since Louis XVI. If it was up to me, I’d put (Bordeaux coach) Laurent Blanc in charge of the France team,” the former Manchester United hero continued.

“He continues the season with Bordeaux, he wins the league with Bordeaux and he wins the World Cup! I’m not the only one who thinks that… What shocked me most wasn’t the handball, honestly,” said Cantona.

“What shocked me most was that at the end of the match, in front of the television cameras, this player (Henry) went and sat down next to an Irish player to console him, even though he’d screwed them three minutes earlier.

“If I’d been Irish, he wouldn’t have lasted three seconds.”

  1. im irish and when i seen him sit beside dunne,i tout what a fukin wanker, rubbing irish noses in it….long live THE KING

  2. Cantona is Cantona. Before the party poopers arrive, this is audacious. This is hilarious and classic. Geez. The comparison with Louis XVI is just crazy. How does he think of these things

  3. it was a shocker for football and us(the irish), apart from the handball, there was a double offside missed, so nice guy ™ Henry Va Va Oops cheats France into the world cup. This would be a good time for Fifa to review the rules and introduced a video ref to help officiate in goal/penalty decisions. Will they? Will they fuck!!

  4. He is not man, he its cantona, his word is law.

“If I’d been Irish, he wouldn’t have lasted three seconds” I love it, but, how many players in the world would have the balls to do this though? Football misses players like cantona, because why they where on the pitch, players like henry would think twice before doing this sort of shit.

  5. I just love that man, he is a football great! A great player, a great person and a great character. I just love him! We need more of these guys in the game… And the best/worst of all, he is critisising his own country! Fucks sake, its not Bulgaria, Spain, Abania or England, its fucking France! Brilliant stuff, just brilliant…

  6. One word. CANTONA. Need I say more? Long live the King. The King should manage France. Louis the XVI may have been a king, but the real King could and should take over France as a hobby during times when he doesn’t watch seagulls following trawlers and when he bores himself from acting. Please King, take over France and leave Laurent Blanc for Manchester United. I am so please that the King agrees with his faithful servant Grognard that Blanc is truly that well qualified. Long live the King.

  7. @Redrich: I would go for Blanc/Cantona any day of the week. Honestly, I do not think this would be that absurd of an appointment. Both have ties to United, one has been dying to return in a coaching capacity and the other looks to be building a resume for such a job offer.

Now as a test, watch the papers in England start reporting this rumor as a possibility after stealing the idea from this blog. It’s happened before

  8. @Grognard: No mate, I’m serious. It makes a lot of sense. Blanc has the coaching experience and Cantona can hold his hand through the first year or two – almost as if to buffer the change over with a familiar face.
    I’m with this too!!

  9. @Redrich: I clicked on the article expecting to see a tirade and leave a comment like

“the old guy’s just bored.. maybe he’s loosing his memory and forgot he had a go at ref’s last week and the week before”

but there is nothing he said there that is inflammatory or that I disagree with. Referees make mistakes and those mistakes cost teams, luckily with us we have the rest of the season to put it right, where as Ireland are done.

What’s really funny are Roy Keane’s comments on the Ireland game. Boild down it’s “It’s over. Stop crying about it. The IFA are a bunch of cunts anyway” πŸ˜€

  10. @Traverse: Yeah I know, I think The Times has made a headline out of side comment, but of course, he needs to watch his language towards the refs right now.
His insinuation that Atkinson might cost us the season, is in itself inflammatory, and to a point, a condemnation of his skills as a ref.

Shhhhhhhh!! The FA are probably not listening now! πŸ™‚

  11. @Redrich: Above the fact that it would be an incredibly popular choice with fans and media (which should never be the reason to hire anyone. Ask Newcastle), I agree, it is a sound move. Blanc has the managerial chops and although I think he would be great for United, I do not see him as a long term manager. He could however break in Cantona, teach him the ropes and then let Cantona offer his own positives before possibly taking over. I think there is a 1% chance of us ever seeing Cantona as United manager but as a coach or assistant manager, I am all for it because you know he will transmit his knowledge and passion and beat it into the players heads. I’ve seen it so many with manager and coaches who are technical or tactical geniuses but have a certain swagger an confidence as well as the respect of players. Klinsmann comes to mind. I still do not believe he failed at Bayern. He was trying to change the culture of that lazy team and this was going to take time and some remodeling, but Bayern are greedy and impatient. For Germany he partnered himself with a smart man in Lowe and was able to make that partnership deliver the goods. I think Blanc and Cantona could do the same provided they get along

  12. @Redrich: This is a case of deflecting the stare of the media on the team’s hopeless pursuit for a fourth straight title. He knew before the season did just like me that the team was not good enough. But he rode his luck and the fact that all teams were weaker and hoped that with the right breaks, we could shock. Well reality is hitting him square on the jaw now and so here come the excuses. Lets blame others for our own inadequacies. Fact, United should have won the game with the chances they got. Fact, they scored zero goals. That is your real culprit, not Drogba.

  13. @Redrich: I think the FA should just ignore him and show him that all his bitching isn’t going to change a thing. That’s one way to shut him up.

  14. As an Irishman I completely concur with what Eric said. It was a blatant act of rubbing salt in the wound. Between this act of empathy / benevolence or whatever he thought he was doing coupled with the clear intention to cheat and the subsequent jubient celebration I cannot express the resentment I feel for this character. Cantona has got it spot on. In a perfect world someone of his magnitude with his love of all that is right in the game should be in the hotseat instead of scoundrels like Platini/Blatter.

Love the idea of Blanc/Cantona at Utd. I reckon we have at least 10 good more years of Ferg though πŸ˜‰

Also, Roy Keane = Muppet. The only one who needs to “get over” anything is him, ie. 2002 Saipan incident. Gobshite.

    Up the Champs!!

  15. @Grognard: Laurent Blanc is a man of tremendous creative possibility. Not shy of himself, and aware that to gain an advantage, you need to take the advantage. He has a swagger that United have never seen, but one that could accelerate our team, into the outer reaches!
With the King by his side to liaise with club’s upper echelons, we would be golden!

  16. @Redrich: You know what depresses me mate? We can dream about new managers and new player bringing new lifeblood to the team but the fact remains that nothing is really going to improve until the Glazer family is run out of town for good. They are the single number one nemesis and obstacle to the team’s future success and their damage is only now really starting to to show.

  17. I respected cantona, but this is below the belt.lets get it straight.Football has these moments and Cantona was no example so he cant judge, especially on manners.
Good as he was,he was never half the player Henry is and if i was Henry,i would do the respectable thing and keep silent and allow him to look at my achievements with envy and admiration.
The Irish cheated Georgia to get there so when the shoe is on the other foot, the British press is screaming murder.

  18. @donibrasco: Cantona is French, and he hammered a Frenchman. Fair play. You have a problem with the British press but you are mixing it up with Cantona’s quotes. So you’re not making any sense.

  19. @Grognard: Unless they release the Ronaldo funds, I’m inclined to agree.
This is vital to show that all our suspicions are without validation and that their commitment, and SAF’s “bargain” strategy, are true elements of inspired management and not the signs of an organization in fiscal crisis!!

  20. @donibrasco: You’re not gonna make any friends here with that kind of sentiment mate.
You can criticize his statements and his behavior all you want, but to blasphemously compare him favorable to the cunt, Henri, is completely taboo.
You now need to now go to your priest, say 3 hail mary’s and generally pray for forgiveness to the big red man in the sky!! πŸ™‚

  21. @donibrasco: First you put down Rooney all the time which gets really old fast and now you put down perhaps the most beloved player in United history as well as perhaps the greatest (no disrespect to George Best). I’d call that going a bridge too far. Perhaps now you should jump. Or I can come over and push you. πŸ˜€

  22. @Redrich: I still would prefer he found a bridge, said his prayers and then jumped. In olden times they burned people at the stake for such crimes. I say Cantona for Pope. I’d then become a Catholic. πŸ˜€

  23. @Grognard: There should be an area, close to the Stretford End, where heretics, such as donibrasco, can be tied to a stake and scorned with a shower of beer and mushy peas.
45 minutes for the first offense and full 90 the second and subsequent ones. πŸ˜†

  24. @donibrasco: Do you really support United? All you do is put the club, manager, players, ex-players and England down why don’t you support someone else might be better all round.
