Captain Marvel, Lord Ferg and Other Stories

United legend Bryan Robson could return to the club to play an ambassadorial role, not very different from other legends like Sir Bobby Charlton.

Despite a stellar career as a player, he couldn’t quite cut it as a manager, save for an above average spell at Boro. So it would make sense for him to give up on that and join the ranks of United evangelists.

Apart from that, I must say there hasn’t been news worth reporting. Unless you want to know about the FA getting irked about SAF and Queiroz’s outbursts. In fact, if you read it you might get the impression that they’ve probably killed someone. The point is, most managers do get worked up after a result like that, and they, like many fans — some of whom were on this very site — could get carried away and go on a rant. Perfectly natural. Although, since they are managers and the rules say so, they can’t blast referees in public.

In other news, Aberdeen will play United in a pre-season scheduled for 12th July. This is to mark the Dons’ 25th anniversary of winning the European Cup Winners’ Cup — and of course, under a certain Alex Ferguson. It is incredible, if you think about it now, how he broke the hegemony of the Old Firm in Scotland before coming to United. So there’s one emotional reunion for the Gaffer.

Meanwhile, this week — I forget when exactly — we have the small matter of finding out who we’ll be drawn against. To be honest, apart from the English opposition, I don’t see any club quite as intimidating. Not even Barcelona, ravaged by injuries and a misfiring forward line. I wouldn’t blink an eyelid if we faced Barca at their current state — not to mention, Messi going out for at least 6 weeks. The other clubs remaining are Roma, Schalke and Fenerbahce and I hope we face one of these, although we could very well be facing one of the English clubs. Here’s hoping Chelsea and Liverpool draw, killing each other with their boredom.

Finally, there has been lots of annoying crap in the media about Ronaldo’s comments with regards to the Distin penalty appeal. I don’t know how, “I have to change my style of play” could be twisted into a headline claiming that Ronaldo may move to Real Madrid if he wasn’t offered protection from refs. Not just in mainstream broadsheets or tabloids, but even some United fan sites have lapped it up. I mean, come on!

Anyway, that’s it for today. A fairly boring post, but I think you can speculate about our next Champions’ League opponent or figure out some way by which we can protect the best (most skillful) players in the league.

I bet liverpool or chelsea get fernabache or shalke…

  2. Wheezy says:

I bet either United or Le’Arse get Barcelona

  3. abood says:

the draw is on the 14th of march at 13.00 CET (12 noon UK time)

  4. colver says:

I’d love to kick Roma off the pitch again, although for the travelling fan’s sake I hope it doesn’t happen.Obviously Fenerbache and Schalke would be amazing draws.

Only teams I do not want to get are Liverpool and Barcelona. Liverpool are a different proposition entirely in Europe and Barcelona still have players that can harm us

  5. Nino says:

I’ve got a nasty feeling we’ll be up against an English team, either Arsenal or Liverpool. Either that or we play Roma (again!). And I’m prepared to bet that Chelsea will either play Liverpool (nooooooo!!) or, knowing their luck, end up getting Schalke or Fenerbahce. But it shouldnt really matter who we play at this stage, if we want to win this competition we have to beat the best teams right?

(Btw RR - I’m pretty sure Aberdeen won the UEFA Cup/Cup Winners Cup and not the European Cup back in the 80’s)

  6. Mas_ter says:

Yup RR u might be wrong there they won the Cup winners cup in 82/83 under fergie!!!

  7. Grognard says:

How many of you caught the post game interviews on Sky Sports with Scouser supporters at the Milan game last night? I’m not from the UK and so I culturally can only relate to so much of the English way of saying and doing things. Nevertheless, if I had to judge all of the UK on on the Scousers that were interviewed by Sky, I’d never want to step foot on your fine island. They are truly the lot from Hell aren’t they? My God they are a disgusting and irritating lot. What a bunch of delusional band wagon jumpers. Totally annoying and very pathetic. I would love for us to draw those bastards and give Rafa a good hard kick to the bollocks

    [Nino and Ma_ster]
Yeah, you’re right. Thanks for pointing that out. Corrected it.

  9. Dan(u-o.l) says:

dude its liverpool, the place is shite hole…

  10. Wazza says:

I am most afraid of smaller teams like Shalkern 04 and Fenerbache. Those team are not fighting for their domestic league and their squad are fresh. Also they are the under dogs in the champions league and have nothing to lose at this stage of the competition. If manu gets one of these team, the pressure will be on use to dictate the game and the opponent will play without pressure.

Although we are capable of handling of all 3 english teams, in the champions league this can be a different matter.

Barcelona on its day can play superb football with its array of individual talents and I think that they are the greatest treat to us.

I would really relish a match against Barcelona. It will be pure attacking football at its best.

A game at the Nou camp will revive some glorious memories.

  11. Dan(u-o.l) says:

im sorry but how can you be afraid of fenerbache…, i mean you say your afraid of the smaller(and much, much easier) teams then you say you want to play a match against barca…

  12. Eddie says:

I hope we play Barca. Its not because its a “bad” side, but I always want to meet the strongest challanger as soon as possible. Chelsea to play Pool, Arse to play Roma and Fenerbache to play Shalke. Liverpool are a better side in Europe, cause it suits their styleof play better, but if they meet an english side they dont perform well. Then it would be like PL fixtures, and we all know how Liverpool suck there. Hope United meet Arse or Roma in the semis, and Shalke(yes I belive they can go that far) in the final. That sounds nice, doesnt it. We can beat all sides that are left, I have no doubts about that!
P.S; Derby got fucked upp 6-1 by Chelsea(!), so we should really add to our goal tally on saturday! I think 7-0 or 8-0 to United sounds like a realistic prediction. :-D

  13. Red Ranter says:

What’s with English teams and penalties? Absolute bollocks!

  14. Andrei says:

Tell me about it RR. I really simpathize with Everton and was shouting at my screen. F###!!

I think Barca would be the best possible draw for United. We will not only see two teams going for it in the most spectacular fashion (based on domestic performances, not CL) but United have more than a fair chance to progress against a Messi-less Barca.

I am scared of Roma, Fener and Schalke and just the though that we might be paired against one of the PL teams makes me lose a good few hours of sleep.

  15. Grognard says:

At this stage nobody should be taken lightly. Fenerbache is actually a very good side with a willingness to attack. Schalke is very disciplined and can close up shop well and try to win the tie 1-0 on agg. Roma is too familiar with what we do and they learned from the 7-1 game. It showed the last time we played them. They deserved to win that game. I actually would prefer to play Barca or an English side. They all have chips on their shoulders and psychologically have more to lose. That makes all of them ripe for the picking. We can beat anyone if only Rooney shows up. If he’s on his game we will be fine.

  16. SHANNON says:

Hopefully we get Fenerbache… Rooney will have good memories of his debut

  17. RedDevil says:

I too hope we get Barca. It would be an amazing attacking game from two of the best offensive sides in the game. They are not that good in defense, but their atack is simply stunning! Henry, Ronaldinho, Eto, Messi, Bojan… I want United to play an attacking game away in Europe, and we certanly cant be focused on defending in that game, we would have some preoblems. If we attack, it will be tough for them. Hope we play Arse or Pool in final too. But, we`ll see what happens!

  18. Dan(u-o.l) says:

god, even if we get barca it will not be all attacking football, it will be a regular european game.

  19. manutd jaluo says:

As long as scholes and hargo wont play, thn bring on any team coz the rest of the players know what it means finishing teams off early.anderson, carrick, fletcher

  20. Just1n says:

How old are the people on this blog that none of you guys even mention Captain Marvel becoming an ambassador for Man Utd. Come on! What’s up with that. The man is a legend at Old Trafford and I would love him to be involved with the club at some level.

  21. Red Ranter says:

Umm, Just1n, I think that’s the title of this post, isn’t it?

Although to be honest, they picked up from the last line of the article which was to speculate on our next champs league opposition. You know, attention span and the memory of what you said last fresh in mind!

Although personally I’d love him to get back to OT. Clearly he doesn’t look manager material, and in fact I think it’s better he plays a back room role at United.

  22. frankjr90 says:

On the topic of protecting players from severe injuries, what do you think of something along the lines of having the player who committed the injury be suspended for the same amount of time the injured player is out (along with the necessary fines). It will need some tweaking but this may be the basis for coming up with a punishment that suits the crime.
