Chicharito: The Javier Hernandez story
This is a story written by Charles Samuel about the first ever Mexican to play for Manchester United. Javier Hernandez…..CHICHARITO.
The story chronicles the life-so-far of one of football’s fastest growing talents. It explains how Chicharito hails from a footballing family background and how his physique led to coaches doubting his ability to make it in the big wide world of professional football, even his Dad (an ex-player) is quoted as saying “I never thought he would actually make it as a professional….”
Not only did Chicharito make a professional name for himself in Mexico with Chivas, he also burst onto the international scene with an impressive World cup debut that highlighted to the world why Manchester United had just discreetly paid Chivas an undisclosed fee for his services.
Samuel explains in detail how United tracked his progress after first spotting his talent whilst playing for Mexico’s Under 17s way back in 2004.
“I got goose bumps when I realised I would be joining Manchester United” Javier admits, he even lied to his beloved Grandfather about his whereabouts when his first meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson was taking place in Manchester, such was the need for both club and player to have their privacy.
Chicharito talks candidly about his short time at United and how he surprised even himself with his immediate impact at the club whilst describing United’s training centre as perfect.
The soon to be released book is a beautifully illustrated hardback with quotes from his family, his team mates and his current manager Sir Alex Ferguson who says “He is completely different. You can’t compare him to anybody else. What has impressed me most about him, and is something I have noticed from the first day I met him, is that he is a very simple person.”
Wayne Rooney says of his team mate “He’s just taken everything in his stride. He’s a lovely lad, who’s always smiling around the dressing room” and Gary Neville admits “He’s one of the most exciting young players I’ve seen at the club for a long time.”
With recent personal success at all levels of his game with Chivas, Manchester United and his beloved home country of Mexico, Chicharito looks forward to his future saying “My Targets? To improve, keep learning and to enjoy myself”.

@thatboywazza: couldn’t agree more mate. Sad how some fans seem to show their support only for some players. As far as I know, United are a team, not a collection of individuals

I simply can’t understand all the critics Chicarito has received this year. He’s got 10 goals in 17 starts, which is an excellent return particularly when one considers that he’s been out injured for a while and that Welbeck has done really well this year (despite what a lot of people think here). Furthermore, he’s a lovely lad, committed to the club and doesn’t moan/whine when left on the bench.
I still think that his first touch could be better, but his link up play has improved and he’ll only get better. Best finisher we’ve had since Solksjaer and Ruud (Ronaldo was lethal too obviously, but im talking about out and out strikers) and I wouldn’t bet against him to bag us one or two vital winners from in the next ten games.
Maybe then he’ll receive the credit he deserves.

@Daniele: I agree about the link-up play. Although his first touch still needs to improve an awful lot, one thing I’ve noticed is his improvement of the second touch. Last season his first touch would ruin the follow up, but since the Newcastle game his second touch really looks good. He can make a bad recieve into something useful, and his vision has definately improved. I don’t know how many assists he’s gotten this season, but I’m pretty sure it’s improved from the last. He’s made two this week only, three if you count the cross which led to Rooney’s penalty against Bilbao. His first touch will improve with time, and although I can never see him become a player who beats opposition at will, his all round play has improved. His movement is more unselfish, he goes out wide much more than he did last season, and as you said his hold-up play has become better. He is more patient now, and although it may ruin the attack in some circumstances it’s good to see that he’s not afraid to keep the ball. He’ll be massive for us in a few years’ time!
