Manchester United host Burton Albion in the third round of this season’s EFL Cup at Old Trafford tomorrow night.
With this being our fourth match in 12 days Jose Mourinho is expected to make wholesale changes to the starting lineup.
This should give an opportunity for the likes of Luke Shaw and Michael Carrick to make their first appearances of the season.
Shaw has only recently returned to full fitness following an injury picked up versus Swansea at the end of April, whilst Carrick has been an unused substitute three times this season (vs Real Madrid, FC Basel and Everton).
Jose Mourinho has already confirmed that David de Gea, Antonio Valencia, Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic will not take part in the EFL Cup tie. De Gea has started every game for us this season whilst Valencia has been busy at right-back as well as playing in South America for Ecuador at the start of the month. Bailly’s only rest since our Premier League opener came versus FC Basel in the Champions League following his suspension, and Nemanja Matic has played every minute of all seven competitive games for us.
In de Gea’s absence it means that Sergio Romero will be back between the sticks for us tomorrow. The Argentine has yet to feature in any game this season after Mourinho confirmed that de Gea will be our first choice in Europe this season. Romero started 12 of our 15 matches in the Europa League last season, including the last 11 matches.
The boss has also confirmed that Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling will be the centre-back partnership. The duo have both only played one game this season, and it came as a pair, in last week’s 3-0 thrashing of FC Basel in the Champions League. This was partly due to both Eric Bailly and Phil Jones being suspended.
