Manchester United start their 2017-18 UEFA Champions League campaign this evening at home to FC Basel.
The Swiss side have been out of form of late with only one win in their last four and were beaten at home by Lausanne on Saturday.
Basel are coached by former-Swiss international Raphael Wicky and won Super League by a margin of 17 points last season.
Here are the confirmed lineups for this evening’s game:
David de Gea; Ashley Young, Victor Lindelof, Chris Smalling, Daley Blind; Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Anthony Martial; Romelu Lukaku
Substitutes: Sergio Romero, Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford
Jose Mourinho confirmed yesterday that David de Gea, Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling would all start, with Eric Bailly and Phil Jones both suspended.
We correctly predicted that Antonio Valencia would be rested and that Daley Blind would be recalled at left-back. It’s Ashley Young who starts at right-back now that he is fit again. The two full-backs should be expected to support the attack as we look to dominate possession and territory this evening.
The boss has named a strong attacking unit. Firstly, Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba have dominated the ball in their opening Premier League matches together and will do so again this evening. In front of them is Henrikh Mkhitaryan in the number 10, Juan Mata on the right wing, whilst Anthony Martial comes in for Marcus Rashford on the left as we predicted.
Marouane Fellaini is fit to take his place among the substitutes after fears over his fitness yesterday. Michael Carrick, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford are other options to Mourinho.
Tomas Vaclik; Marek Suchy, Manuel Akanji, Eder Balanta; Blas Riveros, Taulant Xhaka, Luca Zuffi, Renato Steffen, Michael Lang; Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Mohamed Elyounoussi
Yes, that is Granit Xhaka’s brother, Taulant starting in the Basel midfield and Norwich City reject Ricky van Wolfswinkel up front.
The visitors like to line up in a 3-5-2 formation with Michael Lang and Blas Riveros as the wing backs. It will look more like a 5-3-2 formation this evening.
Benfica are at home to CSKA Moscow in the other Group A game this evening.
