Deadline day likely to be the busiest in history?

Tag: Manchester United @ 9:38 am

Silhouette of Red Devil Having purchased no one to strengthen the squad so far this summer, Manchester United look likely to do all their business in the final few hours of the window.

Marouanne Fellaini, Leighton Baines, Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Mesut Ozil and even Yohan Cabaye are all rumoured to be possible targets for David Moyes whose long term future could hinge on the outcome of today.

United fans far and wide are divided on the issue of the club purchasing players or choosing not to. Some believe the transfer talk and questionable bids for ulikely targets is merely a smokescreen for a club more interested in making money via new new sponsors than it is in plugging the gaping holes in its midfield.

Other fans on the other hand are confident the club will finally add depth to a squad already full of title winners no matter how late circumstances have led it to be.

One fairly big rumour doing the rounds is that Chelsea have decided not to deal with United thanks to their refusal to sell them Wayne Rooney. United have made serious contact about the price and availability of Juan Mata but were told that, unless they do business with them, we won’t do business with you.

Graham Hunter, Spanish journalist, has reported that Real Madrid’s Mesut Ozil is happy to stay at the club but if a last minute offer arrives to better his personal terms at Madrid he could welcome a move. Hunter suggested United, rather than Arsenal, were the most likely suitors and preffered destination for Ozil.

What do you think will happen today? Leave your predictions and get involved throughout the day as we countdown to 11pm.

My prediction: IN: Fellaini, Herrera, Mata and one forward completely from left-field.
OUT: Rooney

(I can hope can’t I?!)

  • I have been a Man U fan/supporter all my life even through relegation 25 odd years ago, watched most games and enjoyed it. This time around though I am really worried with Moyes at the helm, cant see him make it as a United Manager – no signings when we need a play maker in the misfield with Scholes retiring and lets face it Giggs is the man but we cant ask him to give us more as he has given most of his life to UTD, Fellini signing not impressed, he is a good player but not at Uniteds level of play – for 36 million (might as well kept Tevez). United style of play is changing slowly becoming confused and less and less goal scoring opportunities. At first I would I thought Moyes was just going to be a puppet with the strings been pulled by Fergie in the background. Now with Fellini been signed who knows, where does he play – who do you leave out. transfer market is closed where is our midfield. will we be in Champs Leg next season, Liverpool game was the worst performance and we can now count our famous last minute goal (rabbit out of hat) goodbye. United counter attack to slow but we have some of the fastest players in the league, Man Utd is not using their strengths, we could have won on Sunday.

  • “£30.5m move for Ander Herrera is on the brink of collapsing after the club have become unhappy with terms of the deal”.

This exactly what I have been bitching and moaning about for a month. Remember how many times I have accused United of bluffing and not going after players they could sign? Well finally the bluff blew up in their face. Bilbao and Herrera agreed to the buyout price and then United balked and made up excuses that Herrera in hindsight isn’t worth the valuation that was put on him. DUH!!!! Finally caught with your pants down and having to make up an excuse and renege on a deal because all of a sudden you were expected to come up with the money. All along I have said the money was not there. Show me the money, talk is cheap. Manchester United, I am ashamed and embarrassed by your lack of scruples, professionalism and class. This is no longer the club I have supported for most of my life. I am emotionally drained and so incredibly disenchanted and disheartened. I literally feel sick about the calamity and cesspool I find my club swimming in today. :-x :-x :-x

  • LOL. Story gets better and better:

“More now on the story that Manchester United have failed in their attempt to sign Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera amid suggestions imposters posed as United officials.”

  • We’re the laughing stock of football now. Never thought I’d see the day when that would happen.

  • £27M for Fellaini and maybe Contreau on loan from Madrid!

    • @Phoenix Red: Release cause was 23m and we pay 27M on last day of window.
Can there be any question at all about Woodwards lack of ability as a chief executive? :(
      Very embarrassing.

      • @Redrich: i Know Redrich, more effort put into sponsorship deals than strengthening the squad, i dont blame Moyes, i lay the blame at Woodwards feet, ie The Glazers

  • Coentrao to United on loan deal??? 8-O 8-O
Temporary fix for a temporary manager?

  • Apparently Fellaini deal worth £27.5m is coupled with a Fabio Coentrao season long loan deal and we are just waiting for confirmation from the Premier League.

Anders Herrera deal officially failed due to a combination of tragi- comical circumstances including, bogus Manchester United reps who were trying to get in on the deal after having been informed of confusion with the whole deal

    • @Jay Wire: Imposters at the Spanish FA offices have been identified as one Mr. Edward Woodward and one Mr. David Moyes. They were pretending to represent the club, but it became obvious that they were not proper football executives.

  • Fabio Coentrao deal is subject to approval by FIFA. There has to be proof beyond doubt that paperwork was completed latest by midnight British Summer Time as it is an international transaction.

It is sad that all we got was Fellaini and that at the very last minute. This in my opinion has been a great failure of a transfer window. The transfer window has been open for nearly three months now and it is ridiculous that we have had to wait for the last couple of hours to begin ridiculous transfer negotiations. I’m disappointed really.
