Deadline Day Looms…

Tag: Manchester United News @ 10:00 am

We lost the Super Cup to Zenit. Chelsea proved they are still shit by dropping points. Liverpool drew to Villa, sussing out early season optimism and, more importantly, both Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are extremely doubtful for our Anfield visit.

We have no news on Berbatov, yet. Either way we’ll get to know it today. Hopefully let the good times roll as we get into a two week period of boredom — also called the international break.

Meanwhile, I apologise for not writing up my thoughts on the Super Cup. Or generally not updating this for the last couple of days. Kudos to the folks to keep commenting despite my negligence — trust me this is only temporary. It turns out that I do have a life outside of writing about United, which is what caused me to be off the blog during the weekend.

So, in the words of Arnie, I’ll be back. Hopefully, by then, Berbatov will be wearing the red of United.

  • cheers red ranter.

i’m glad this 2 week break is in the midst of Ronaldo and Hargreave’s recovery process. it would suck if they got back AND THEN there was a two week break.

    silver linings, gotta love ‘em

cheers mate, the countdown to berbatov will end today!
the verdict will be shown, nonetheless, i don’t think giving up campbell for berbie is fair enuff. we should sign berba and still keep our players. IMO if berbie remains at the lane, i think fergie has high hopes and expectations from manucho…

  • Either that or Fergie screwed up the transfer!!!
HOnestly why the HELL are we paying as much for berbie as liverscum paid for el nino??NONSENSE I SAY!!
fuck berbie id rather see so many other strikers at OT like ronaldinho eto o huntelar trezeguet benzema and even arshavin for that matter that guy is quality…podolski is actually amazing anyone agrees he would be fucking amazing for united?

  • the super cup was a nothing trophy so who cares we lost. good to see chelsea dropping points and fat frank being totally useless. and happy days stevie g and torres are gonna be out for the match….we should def be coming away with a point if not all 3.

cant wait for today to be over so we get on with season without berbacrap. im guessing it will be all quiet on the old trafford front today. i dont think we should get rid of frazier campbell, but Hull are offering 7 mil! thats pretty good is it not?

We should loan out Campbell to see how he gets on in the Prem.

  • Why are we having problems scoring goals this season?

    An over reliance on Ronaldo?
Rooney not as good at scoring goals as we once thought?
The central midfield’s poor goal return (bar fletcher?!)

  • I really hope for his own sake Berba moves somewhere today. Levy really would be a massive c*nt to not let him leave to go somewhere if the money is good.

See that the spuds have signed Corluka and Pavyluchenko…that’s some decent cash right there. Perhaps the Robbie Keane money but I thought that was already spent. Let’s hope Levy’s fax is in order, wouldn’t want to miss the midnight deadline.

  • @Craig Mc: Some people may not have the end of season review, so I wil make it easier for people to remember. When Rooney was under heavy critique, I made a long post about every game he played and his biggest contributions in those games. Now it looks like Nani is also in the fireing line and I will stand up and protect him from this critiques. WARNING! Long post. Nanis contribution in 2007/08:
Reading- sub for Rooney at half time, shoots just wide from 25 yards.
Pompey- Crosses to Tevez on 28-yard box, Tevez 1 touch and pass to Scholes, Scholes scores.
City- Gets 1-on-1 with Schmeicel, saves shot. Problems with Richards, but makes some chances with good crosses.
Spurs- Scores his first goal for United with a thunderbolt from 25 yards. Matchwinner.
Sunderland- Passes free kick to Scholes on 25 yards, Scholes shoots just wide because of deflection. Corner assist to Saha, Saha matchwinner.
Everton- Corner assist to Vidic, Vidic matchminner.
Sporting- no major contribution, subbed off for Anderson.
Roma- Beats 2 man on left wing then crosses to Rooney who shoots just over the bar from 10 yards. Cross/shot hits the bar in 2nd half. Assist for Rooney who becomes matchwinner.
Villa- Cross that Rooney converts for 1-1, corner scored from Rio to 3-1.
Boro- Scores 1 goal witha thunderbolt from 25 yards, creates chance for Rooney and Ronaldo, neither manages to find the target with those chances.
Dynamo Kiev- 1 assist for Rooney goal, passes to Evra who passes to Ronaldo for 4-0.
    Bolton- no impact, bad game.
Sporting- bad game, subbed off at half time.
Roma- 1 assist for Pique header from corner. Creates chances for Rooney and Saha, neither score.
    Sunderland- Wins penalty for 4-0.
Birmingham- Hits post, crosses for Tevez who hits crossbar.
Newcastle- substitue, header down to Tevez who make sit 6-0.
Pompey- 1 assist for Ronaldo, passes to Tevez who shoots, James saves rebound form his dangerous shot, almost scores but James gets to the ball first.
Spurs- substitute, Corner assist to Tevez who scores in 94th minute.
City- No impact, bad game(like everyone else excpet for Andy)
Arsenal- 2 assists to Flecther, 1 goal, toys with the Arsenal defense, takes corner that untied make 1-0 from, makes Gallas look like a kindergarden kid, plays keepy-uppy with Traore, Wenger gets furious about his arrogance.
Lyon- substitute, cross for Tevez who equalises.
Newcastle- crosses to Tevez who heads wide, passes to Ronaldo who scores 3-0, crosses to Scholes good save by keeper, takes corner that Rooney scores from.
Fulham- showboats on the left wing, crosses for Scholes and Saha, neither score when 1-on-1.
Pompey- Horror game that United lose, Nani makes lots of chances, 1 for Tevez, 2 for Ronaldo and 1 for Carrick.
Bolton- Tests Al-Habsi reflexes with great free-kick, beat 1 man before he crosses to Saha who gets injured trying to scroe.
Liverpool- substitute, 1 assist from corner to Ronaldo, 1 goal after pass from Rooney.
Blackburn- returns from injury, corner to scholes who heads to Tevez who scores and makes it 1-1.
    Chelski- bad game, bad decisionmaking.
Barcelona- Realy good game, heads just outside from Park cross, shoots over on counter attack, toys with Puyol.
West Ham- assist for 1-0 from Ronaldo, gets sent off.
    Chelski, final- scores his penalty.

Hope this cleared so things up!

  • well i think we don’t have more time again, what i want is SAF should loan Campbell so that he can have more experience on th league and let have berba and see how far we goes from there,if we don’t have berba then we are short of strikers upfront and we have some important games that we could not afford to drop point and ronaldo out, rooney not too good at scoring….men we need a striker i just hope we get one by today…what about saha guys???where is he now?pls relply!

  • The Times said this over the weekend:
David Moyes, the Everton manager, believes that Saha is well worth a gamble. “Louis is a good centre forward who has a bit of everything,” Moyes said. “He can run, head the ball and score goals and he hasn’t cost us any money.
Another example of our brilliant transfer dealings, sounds like we have just given him away, comforting!

  • RedDevil, I’m not criticising Nani. I just agree with Liam that the club might be focussing on the wrong aspects of his abilities. We expect him to be ‘like Ronaldo’ when it’s evident that he is much better suited at developing ‘like Beckham’. He is currently – by far – the best crosser we have. I think SAF should focus on that. I see Nani as a combination of the old Beckham and the old Giggs (or rather a Giggs that can cross like Beckham). I think he has the potential to be great.

“Rooney – better than Ronaldo” :-)

  • @Stephen: The thing with Saha is he is unlikely to command much of a fee due to his injury history. Who’s going to stump up £5m or so for Saha if he ends up spending most of the time in sick bay. By letting him go for free they get a high wage earner off the payroll and if we sign the Berb he’d be a long way down the pecking order if he stayed. That said I’m sad the way his United career pettered out, when fit he’s a dynamic centre forward with a lot of weapons and perfectly suited to United’s fluid formations. You can see why it’s a good deal for both Everton and United (assuming we get someone signed today).

  • Dimi ain’t going no where and he sure ain’t going to OT …so everybody take a deep breath and pray that we survive this season!! Come on guys, this exact team won us the EPL and UEFA CL last season !! Relax and let it go will you. I can’t wait till this dreadful transfer saga ends, hopefully not so long now. It’s as if there’s a fucking force out there that wants to redirect all United fans attention from the glory of being champions, to being totally focused on the Berbatov transfer story. arrrgh !!

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @Uncle Roy: I can’t see why he cannot command any fee? Owen who’s contract expires next season, and with an equally poor injury record as Mr Glass, was touted over the weekend for £2m. I can’t see how giving away a proven goalscorer in the top flight is good business for us, as we still have not signed replacement.

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • If Owen was really available for £2m I’d bite someones hand off. You want someone who really could be a Solsjkaer replacement – look no further. If we only used him in the last 20 mins of matches, hopefully he’d stay fit more and the boy knows where the goal is. Something we sorely miss.

Now that would be a nice surprise, IMO.

  • Spurs have signed Corluka for £8.5m and Pavlyuchenko for £14m – these are the actions of a club who expect some significant funds to come their way by the end of the day.

So I remain optimistic on Berba. And pessimistic about a surprise extra, though I’d love that whoever it was…?!

  • Hrm, so I almost came on here when I saw the City news and said I hope they don’t try and get into a big d*ck waving competition and hijack Berba with stupid money. But then I realised that would be completely ridiculous.

But now rumours say they are trying to do just that.

Look at it from Spurs perspective and it looks rather peachy: More money, not sell to United and spite United too. Eeep.

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @Beachryan: doubt berba can ever accept that…looking for more CL action and city nowhere close to it…

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Actually I am pretty sure Saha was sold for no initial fee but a fee based on appearances.

The main problem with Nani is judgement and mediocre passing ability-he gives the ball away a lot. That will improve. In the meantime the positive aspects of his game (he can beat a man and cross) will be brought out by a target man.

Around 12 hours to go and no Berbatov. God knows how im going to work as im checking the BBC feed every five minutes! It hurts to see all the other clubs pulling off these surprise deals

  • @Stephen: I think the fact that he won’t be pocketing a hefty wage at OT for the remainder of his contract is as good as a transfer fee for United. Given his injury record any deal to offload him needs to be incentivized for both Everton and Saha himself since he could easily sit out his contract at OT.

However, I agree with you that it could prove to be a bad mistake if Berbatov doesn’t sign.

  • Owen would be an amazing snap up… but I hope for the sake of the club we keep hold of a talent like Frazier Campbell. It would be great to get Dimitar but if we let Frazier go I will have to wonder why on earth we are becoming a feeder club in terms of our youth system.

Berba may get offered a City switch but he wants Champions League football now. and at the very least he’d be waiting 4 years at City.

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @Uncle Roy: If we don’t get Berbatov it could cost us more than his hefty wage mate, we need Berbatov badly now.

  • Stephen. I don’t agree. can someone please explain to me bar Ronaldos injury what is so different this season compared to last? surely other teams strengthening isnt getting you worried? we still have a great team with good work ethic and have shown with our goals thus far that we dont rely purely on Forwards to win us points with goals… they come in from everywhere. Once Carrick is back you will see a huge difference in our build up play.

also, would it be a good move to take Smith back on loan if no Dimitar deal gets done… or even if it is. We could get him back on track, I still miss him

  • @dan(u-ol): @sig: We are struggling in front of goal at the moment, we can’t rely on Rooney and Carlito for goals. We have only 2 reconised strikers on our books and do you guys really think Ronaldo will score another 42 goals this season?
We won the ECL on pens and league on the last day of the season and yes I am worried about other teams strengthing and we have sold our only out and out striker, know one knows what to expect from Mancuho, so yes in my view we need Berbatov.

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Stephen. I understand your fears, but I think we proved last season that we dont play in the old school way of having a dedicated marksman, thats why I dissagree. I think Dimitar would be great in terms of holding the ball up in the last 3rd of the pitch but his other qualitys such as poaching goals are already posessed by other players…

    NEWS FLASH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    JUST IN. Sky Sports News:
A bid has been tabled by Manchester City in excess of £30 Million for Dimitar Berbatov

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @Stephen: how many players get 42 goals a season, not many, ronaldo was lucky, to get that. Even if we get berbatov he would only be expected to score around 35 goals, not 42. what ronaldo dod last season is a once in a life time thing for players, and most players dont even do it.

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Ok we now have major problems. In excess of 30mill and with Spurs really not wanting to sell to us we are screwed.

And the options remaining are either untested having played in weak leagues (Huntelaar) or will cost us significantly more than £30mill

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • City are beyond stupid, did you see Sky interviewing cit-eh fans wearing gaffa tape on what looked like sugar paper strapped to ther heads like head scarfs? They gave their full and undying support to shiwanatra and seem to have forgotten about him just as soon. If they get berbatov that would require Dimitar to accept non european football as well as giving up on his ‘dream’ of playing for united so despite this 30+ million muscle flexing by Englands richest new club i cant see it hapenning

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @sig: Who is a goal poacher for us bar Tevez? We need more than two reconised forwards @ the club. Manucho is completly unproven @ this level as his Welbeck and Campbell. Teams will also work our how to play us and sometimes we need another option, also if we get injuries to our forwards then we are very thin up there, surely its obvious?
I trust the players we have because they have done it, but teams around us have bought and we haven’t, you can’t say that because we did it last year then we will do it again this, we need to progress the club and Fergie has admitted we need a striker for over a year.
