‘Fabio will be one of the greatest left backs for Manchester United’
I was a bit disappointed to see Fabio da Silva sent off against Wolves in midweek. The Carling Cup has been a platform for our young players to show their mettle and prove themselves. So I was really keen to see them line up against Wolves and put on a performance. So, being reduced to 10 men wasn’t going to help them prove their worth — was a shame Macheda had to be sacrificed as a result, but I digress.
Patrice Evra expressed his sympathy for Fabio and praised him:
“It was painful for him, and it touched my heart. I went down to speak to him in the dressing room at half-time and then again at full-time, just to say, ‘It’s ok, these things happen, just carry on and look forward.’
“I love Fabio, he’s a great left-back and I think a lot of people need to trust in him. I have trust in him and I think he can be one of the best left-backs Manchester United has ever had.”
Fabio was given a standing ovation following his red card. Paul Doyle who did the minute-by-minute on the Guardian, for that match said it was disgraceful to be cheering a red carded player; which was something, considering the context of the the foul, ridiculous. If anything that desperate foul from Fabio was about the most hilarious red cards you would actually see. And it surprises me that Paul Doyle would make such a big deal out of it. What does he expect from us; boo a promising 19 year old left back? Yeh, right!
Preview will be up in a few hours. Stay tuned…

Fabio sacrificed himself for the team. He knew if he had not fouled, it would have been a near certain goal. Fabio kept us in the cup as much as Danny did,
Well done lad!
Doyle, you missed the whole point, didn’t you!

It also reminded me of Solskjaer’s foul on Rob Lee against Newcastle, back in the day.

Fabio saved a goal, perhaps a little more than Foster can do??

@Redrich: Actually Kuszczak, but I see your point.

What does Doyle expects??
To boo our own players and turn them against our club like gooners???

@Red Ranter: Glad you brought that Paul Doyle point up. It was one of the numptiest comments by a journalist I’ve heard in a while.

Fabio did what almost every defender will do. To defend the goal no matter what the circumstances are. To doyle, this Manchester United. We cheer our own player and not boo them. Welcome to Manchester!

@Redrich: Actually Foster, i think you have missed the point. I think Redrich wasnt referring specifically to this match where Kuszczak was playing and DIDNT concede a goal, unlike Foster who keeps letting them in at his near post!!!!
Hes a disgrace of a keeper.

This doyle is talking with his head in his arse!!

Fergi made a plunder by selling off Gerard Pique to Barse and now he is the best defender in Spanish Liga. Now that MU have Rafeal and Fabio the best right and left back defenders please do not sell them.John Oshea the most useless player of them all and who is Fergi favourite pat has been in the team whom the fans arround the world dont agreed. Oshea once again was ball watching when MU conceeded the second goal and why is Fergi include him in the team.He should be sell off long ago rather than selling off others.

@ManU: Fergie had to make a choice between Evans and Pique and I think he made the right choice. Pique was a bit dodgy when he played in the premier league games. Evans seemed better suited to the physical rigours. The pace of the Spanish league is ideally suited to Pique. Also, considering he’s a Barca boy, he was always going to yearn to play in Spain. Evans, if he is fully fit, is a pretty good defender. He’s been carrying an injury for the past few months and he’s a much more long term strategy than Pique.

tbh, de laet looked the better LB.
Perhaps thats due to time on the pitch, but personally, i just think de laets the better all round player.
September 26th, 2009 at 9:02
@Dan: de Laet will become the best central defender in the world. Maybe I’ll say this (and offend Grognard in the process): he can become the next Beckenbauer.

@ManU: PIque is not the best defender in La Liga – but he is pretty good – and O’Shea has saved our asses time and time again. Rafael and Fabio are promising… they are good young players – not good players yet, don’t forget that.

As soon as I saw Wes make that ridiculous error I knew we were either going to see a goal or a red card. Fabio initially made a decent challenge, but missed the ball, and fought valiantly to stop a goal. I thought it was about as good a red card as we’ll see. The bottom line is that Wes put him in an awful situation. I’ve read numerous posts here and on other sites which lauded Wes’ effort. I concede that he made some good plays, however, that sole play was enough for me to damn his performance.
On a different note… I can not believe the number of defensive errors this year. Perhaps we we’re spoiled last year, but the minor shit (Rio v Man City, O’shea/Vida giving players tons of room to shoot outside the box) is unbelievable.

@I_Bleed_Red: I think it is not down to playing our best 4 defenders the whole time. There is a lack of consistency, and thus a lack of communication and understanding. We’re playing O’Shea or Neville at right back. Evra is ever present (and looks to have shed his sausage skin), and whichever 2 from 3 CB’s are the least injured. We need to pick a 4 and play them. Brown, Rio, Vidic, Evra.

@Red Ranter: We can only hope

Pique had a torrid time when he played when it came to high balls(anyone remember the Chelsea game?),I believe Evans is much more stronger and less error prone and a proper fit for us in the future..as far as Pique is concerned he looks like he is the best defender in the la liga and he probably is considering the ease at which Ronaldo is running rings around their opposition with such ease against the rest of that league

Have you noticed that Evra is best friends with every player ? He is such a role model to all footballers around the world ! The other day he walked down the tunnel with Tevez at half time and put his arm around him, he feels sorry for young Fabio for that harsh red card, and he even said he will get Parky a girlfriend in his preseason interview
I think everyone should take a leaf outta his book ! Well done Patrice. x

@rocky : personally i see gibbo as the player carrick was supposed to be – i see him as across between carrick and keano – hard nut good tackler with a great range of passing. I recon the next schoples is a wee fella in the reserves called Eikrem (was on the bench against wolves) he’s pure class

Fabio and Rafael have potential but there are miles away from the finished article especially defensively. Evra has made the left back spot his own and while I’d favour Brown at right back, O’Shea is solid enough defensively. For the domestic cup games and home games against little teams where they pose little offensive threat, we should unleash the twins and see what they can do. My one worry about them is they seem a bit injury prone. But then our entire defence is injury prone and I cannot for the life of me understand why!!!!!!!!
Carrick is rubbish. He was a better player at Tottenham. His biggest problem is he is too slow and cannot take boss a midfield. Without someone like Scholes alongside him he seems rather lost. Defensively he is a bit suspect-he was a feature in the Barca and Milan game where our midfield became sieve like, and he never gets forward enough to make an impact.
What we need is an attacking midfielder to play next to Fletcher. Giggs can do a job but for the long term we need to blood Anderson and Gibson and see if either of them has what it takes. If not we need to dip into the transfer market.
