Fellaini: “LVG what we needed after Moyes”

hi-res-61ae1517d7ebebebdfc50f4d2d84c026_crop_northMarouane Fellaini has described Louis Van Gaal as the sort of strict manager Manchester United needed this season after David Moyes’ shambolic, short-lived tenure.

The Belgian arrived at Old Trafford on deadline day last season but failed to recapture the form he had shown at Everton and soon became a pantomime villain, as he epitomised Moyes’ ill-fated 10-month spell in charge of the club.

With Moyes replaced by Van Gaal, however, United have gradually started to resemble a different team and the United midfielder believes the Dutchman deserves credit for turning things around and for showing the sort of ruthless approach Moyes never looked capable to adopt.

“The coach is very strict, but that’s good. We needed such a coach,” said Fellaini

“Last season, we had a bad season. We even missed European qualification. We needed a coach who would put some players’ feet back on the ground.

“If he says something, you should do it. Otherwise you’ll fly out of it [the team].”

Fellaini added that Van Gaal wasn’t afraid of making unpopular decisions if he thought they were in his team’s best interest.

“If he has to take you off the pitch when the game hasn’t been going on for more than 30 minutes, he’ll do it. Or during half-time. Fortunately, it hasn’t happened to me yet,” said the former Everton man.

The Belgian has been a revelation this season and has thanked Van Gaal for giving him a chance to shine this season.

“He [Van Gaal] told me, ‘Prove yourself and we’ll see’. Now they are counting on me,” he said.

“There were never any real doubts. I was injured at the beginning of the season and then returned. The coach gave me confidence and I proved myself in a few matches.

“After that, I was injured and I got sick. For three weeks I was on antibiotics. It took a while, but now I can finally enjoy things.”
