Fergie: “United can win the league”

Man-Utd-vs-Ipswich-Capital-One-Cup (1)Manchester United have a chance to win the Premier League title this season but Louis Van Gaal’s new signings need more time to settle into a new reality, according to Sir Alex Ferguson.

United, who are two points adrift of league leaders Manchester City after suffering an embarrassing 3-0 defeat away at Arsenal before the international break, face a difficult trip to Goodison Park on Saturday as they aim to reverse a trend that has seen them losing their last three league games on the blue half of Merseyside.

Despite the capitulation at Arsenal and their largely unimpressive football, United remain well in the title race and Fergie believes things can only get better for Van Gaal’s side.

“[Louis Van Gaal has] certainly made a lot of changes and he’s bought [six] new players this year and, I think, five or six new players the year before,” Ferguson said at the unveiling of his new book in New York.

“That takes time and it’s not easy.

“Coming to Manchester United, you do need time. In my time, there was maybe Dwight Yorke who gave an immediate response – he was fantastic from day one.

“They are not always like that; he was an exception. It normally takes some time, particularly if they come from abroad, to settle in.”

With only three months of the season gone, all the top sides have already suffered a blip in form and Sir Alex believes the league’s unpredictability gives United a good chance to end their trophyless run.

“It’s that kind of league, anyone can win it now,” he added.

“Leicester are the most consistent – they’ve only lost one game.

“If we get to New Year up near the top, we’ll have a good chance.”
