Gabriel Obertan – Shades of Henry?
Of course, I’m being a bit premature here. But, anyway, highlights from yesterday’s reserves outing against Oldham, here.
And a compilation of Obertan’s skills, here. Boy is he ugly — although, with the ball at his feet, the Henry resemblance is uncanny.

I thought he looks good, his final ball however is a worry. I like that he’s left and right and his vision is decent.

does anyone else view the current Reserve system a waste of time? Every time I watch these highlights im blown away by how big of a step down it is from the first team. Surely we should do like Real Madrid and have a “B” team that would play in a lower division. Imagine this team playing in the championship, the youngsters would be tested more and they would learn to play in hostile conditions.

Some you guys must have watched another game. He’s final ball is not worrying at all. In fact it’s encouraging. How many through balls did he make?! He never once wasted the final ball.

How can you say his final ball is worrying? He played some great through balls there. You can see why people are saying he’s reminiscent of Henry, because of that trick he did and the stepovers etc.
He’s amazing on Football Manager so he’ll be amazing in real life

I watched the game, and he was good. Needs to work on his off the ball positioning, but maybe it was the camera angle since he was nearside and always in shot. He wants to take on his man every time which is good, his through balls were weighted and put in the exact right spot. Obviously the team we played against were a crock of it, and the worst opposition reserve team I’ve seen us play against, so don’t take all your information on the reserve system from how rubbish Oldham are.
All in all, promising.

@johnsom33: Its rhetorical at best. Unless you’re driving a point, I would think you are unaware of the rules in place or the way the English league works. Even if they wanted, they could not enter a team into the championships, they certainly would have to start somewhere near the lower tier of the english league system, and promote themselves by winning or finishing near the top to qualify for the play offs. So probably in about 7-8 years, you could see them in league one or two at best…if at all. I’d say their current exposure to the top teams’ reserves and the League cups is a lot better than playing stafford rangers or vauxhall week in and out. And then the other point is how many of Real Madrid B players do we know of, who have made the step up to their first team lately?

@Shami: I realize they would have to start in non league football. But with the quality of our youngsters we should progress fairly quickly. Also battling our way up the English league system would be more challenging then meaningless reserve games. I realize oldham is rubbish, but how many good teams are there? Ours and arsenals youth team can hang with any first team out there who isn’t in the top ten of the epl.
As for the Madrid b team, they brought thru Raul,Guti,raul bravo, arbeloa and iker casillas in recent times.

One of the points of a reserve team is to give injured a run out before playing in the first team again, just how van der saar did. This couldnt happen if we had to transfer him between two clubs
So why not just have a youth team? What if we need to call one of those players up or want to move a first team player down? Like we did with Bellion or the brazillian twins
There is a reserve team league, it may not be upto scratch but means players can move back and fourth

@ashman: Yeah but so can the Spanish teams. I believe that players under 25 can be shuttled back and forth. I realize this wouldn’t allow the EVS or nevilles to play, but these guys are seasoned vets. They only need to get their fitness back. Something which can be done in training.

@Johnsom33: I see the point you are making and how it has been for the spanish clubs. But is it more due to their academy and no 50 mile rules?
The simple point at the end of it is this. They’re not facing quality opposition the way the current reserve league system is designed.
How about a euro reserve league for the top teams?

i didnt realise under 25s can shuttle. if they can then that would be awesome, but would the league allow it? imagine united have a game off and rooney needs a match after a couple of weeks out and ends up playing against AFC wimbledon or something, then scores the winner to relegate AFC to or win United 2 the league. im sure the opposition would have something to say. esp if the following week he plays for the first team. Also, im not 100% but isnt there rules on owners owning 2 clubs, like the arab guy who sorted out the city deal, then jumped ship to pompey??
what fergie does makes sense, any promosing players he sneds off to feeder clubs, or loans out. then they see decent opposition. Like Drinkwater at huddersfield
