Goodbye, Rossi

Giuseppe RossiIt’s that sinking feeling. Again.

Another very promising player leaves the club. Last year, we saw Dave Jones – a promising midfielder – leave due to overcrowding of our midfield (which, in turn, was due to the arrival of Carrick). He would go on to inspire Derby to promotion to the Premiership. The reason I felt bad for Jones was that he wasn’t even given a fair run in the side. But that said, there wasn’t much of a chance anyway, given our acquisition of Carrick. After I got over the initial disappointment, my only gripe was the mere 1 million quid we got for him. (Really, that is chicken feed-in modern football transfer dealings.)

But to think that our brightest young talent, in a long time, would be sold – despite outstanding performances in the reserve level, and equally impressive performances in the Serie A for Parma – without being given as much as a sniff of a run for the senior side is gut wrenching.

To spell it out to everyone in explicit terms, Rossi has been sold to Villarreal for £6.7m.

In pure professional terms, it was a great bit of business. We bought him for peanuts and sold him for a good sum. But there itself lies testament to the value of the player. Rossi has been hailed by none other than Ruud van Nistelrooy as one of the best finishers he’s seen. Sir Alex would also concur. His performances at the reserve level, where he scored for fun, were proof enough that he belonged to a higher level. Unfortunately, his spell at Newcastle proved to be his undoing. A good run in a Premiership club would have instilled faith in SAF to give him a chance in the team this season. But with hardly any playing time at Newcastle, one could never be sure if his dimunitive frame was suited for the Premiership.

However, to be fair and realistic, we must trust the judgement of SAF here. There is one fact that remains true of our side. If we get Tevez, there will be far too many similar types of players. Rossi again doesn’t offer the aerial threat and specialises in playing off a target striker. In a team with Tevez and Rooney, both of whom typically revel in similar roles, a fair run for Rossi would seem far fetched, save for the odd FA Cup and Carling Cup appearance.

From a personal career point of view, this is the time where he needs regular football at a high level in order to improve and grow as a player, and a club like Villarreal would certainly guarantee that, now with the departure of Diego Forlan – another ex-United player – from their ranks. Villarreal are not a huge club, like the Juves and the Milans. They will certainly guarantee Rossi regular playing time while their presence in the UEFA Cup this season would ensure Rossi plays good opposition too. The technical nature of the La Liga would give him more time on the ball and I wouldn’t be surprised if he plays a blinder of a season, a la Diego Forlan. Although I would certainly be cursing our luck if that happens. Not to mention, the immense joy it would give the ‘Dippers and the rest of the league.

Anyway, we have seen great stars sold from our club and seen our club get stronger. But selling promising talent without them getting a chance to prove their mettle might be even more frustrating. It is like the baby that everyone looks forward to but dies due to miscarriage. If I am permitted to use that form of an analogy, that is. It does pose a serious question, not just to us, but a lot of teams in the Premiership: Aren’t we being increasingly guilty of not being able to keep faith on players that come off our youth system? Okay, Rossi wasn’t exactly our product, but he was picked off Parma at a very young age, like how Fabregas was picked off Barcelona. But aren’t we succumbing to the pressure posed by clubs that have now become well endowed with cash, that we’d rather go for ready-made talent, in order to keep up? Well of course, we don’t really have much choice these days and all we can do is to move on, put it behind us, and hope for another young one to light our Theatre of Dreams.

Till then Good bye, Rossi. We wish you the very best. Go make yourself proud.

i think it is possible that rossi had some part in his transfer to villareal, he could have told SAF he didnt want to be a bench warmer anymore, only getting the odd appearance here and there, not content with a place in our reserves and wanting a regular place in the starting line up wich, ofcourse, with the imment arrival of carlos tevez he would not have got for a good few seasons. this however begs the question why not send him out on loan again? that is 1 for the big man himself but hey as ive said b4 ‘whats done is done’
    good luck rossi

I feel this is a real mistake by Fergie unless he is looking to sign another forward part form Tevez. Because he has let Rossi go, while Smith is in talks with another club and sure to leave and Tevez is not secured. we are set to go into the start of the season with Wayne Rooney as our only fit and proven striker come the beginning of the season. Which is plain suicide. I’m dying to see Fergie’s solution to all this……

I’m happy for Rossi though. He has gone to a good club where he can really become a star. I wish him all the best

    Hmm funny…vicious cycle

    Tevez –> MU
Bellamy –> west ham to replace tevez in west ham
Torres –> to replace bellamy in liverpool
Forlan –> to replace torres in Ath Madrid
Rossi –> to replace forlan in Villareal

There’s no doubt that Rossi wanted this move himself…and you can’t blame him. And as SAF has said, when you get the oppotunity to sign a player like Tevez, you don’t think twice. Tevez is simply better than Rossi, and that leaves little room for Rossi to shine. I would have preferred Rossi over Ole as our 4th striker (assuming Smith is sold), but he had to move on at this stage of his career.

Gutted, but I think you summed it up well. I’d always envisioned him as the lil Mickey Owen we never had, back in his prime, bursting into the right places at the right time…

You’ve touched on the two possibilities I can see, that Rossi demanded to go or that Fergie didn’t actually see him having a future at the club. To be honest I think he’ll thrive in La Liga, and maybe we’ll be left wondering what if…

Do we think maybe Smith is now being told to put his bags down and stick around for a bit?

My theory is simple why Rossi was allowed to leave.
I think the emergence of Eagles and to a certain degree Lee Martin sealed his exit from the club. I think the boss and Carlos will start to push Ronaldo further upp the field in certain games because lets face it, Ronaldo is a lot better forward the Rossi will ever be.
The development of Campbell and Brandy also sealed the fate of Rossi, because they are stars in the making, with at least the same amount of talent as Giuseppe has.
Good luck Guiseppe and thanks for all those reserve team goals you gave.

I actually think, Smith might still move on, but it’ll probably be more on his own wish than on SAF’s command. Smith needs to play, and he won’t do that at Man. Utd., once we land Tevez.

I am bitterly dissappointed with this news. Especially as Ferguson came out and stated only last week that Rossi and Pique would be staying.

I really believe that Rossi is the real deal.

It won’t look like a good bit of business in two years time when he is worh £20 Million

    So, what happens now.

    We have Rooney.

    Saha keeps breaking down.

    Solksjaer is ageing.

Tevez is still in the mix and not certain to arrive.

Presumably Smith will be staying now.

I just wish it were Rossi instead.

I am at a bit of a loss to understand why people got so worked

enough to start for us he would have done? Rooney, Ronaldo did
at younger ages and continue to. Rossi is still playing for the
Under 21s for Italy at an age when he should be (if he was as
exceptional as all that) be playing for the seniors. I am not
knocking Rossi – he has talent – but the blunt truth is there
are better out there. I suspect he knows that.

p.s. David Jones was not a good player either, that’s why he
went to Derby and Giles Barnes had more of a say in their

well Obviously that leaves a door open for another FW to come (even in the case Tevez comes). We can consider Smith is also a “gone” case.
IMHO Gudjhonsen to me appears to be the player who will be joining. Then we shall have 4 quality forwards in Rooney, Tevez, Saha and Gudj. We got 6.7m for Rossi and should get 6-7m for Smith as well – total of 13m GBP. Assuming 6m outlay for Tevez (2 yr loan deal) + 6-8m for Gudj, we get 2 quality players for nothing in exchange! Gudj is a younger version of Larson, very experienced, at 29 has 2-3 years left in him and wouldnt really mind not starting all the games. At 6′1 he also provides more ariel threat than any other striker we have. What say?
That said, wish Rossi the best. Obviously with the imminent arrival of Tevez, Rossi’s career was finished at OT (we play for championships so cant really take chances). Plus SAF is going for CL this year and he needs experience! I think its really in best interests of all – MUFC, Rossi and football!! Hope he really shines in Spain (will be really great if he scores more than Torres this year ;)

But we will sell Smith for 6m, he wants to go and we’re getting 6m for him from Middlesborough, and if Juventus bid 7m for Heinze we already know that’ll mean he’s gone, and after just getting 7m for Rossi thats 20m, enough to buy Alves, but I don’t see it happening.

Anyway he is a proven premiership player. And do you really think a good young player wud come to us knowing he will be behind Tevez,Rooney and Saha in packing order! Doesnt Rooney, Saha, Tevez, Gudj remind of the 99 strikeforce (Gudj as the new Sherringham!)
Plus Saha is like 29! Retire (sell) him next year and buy Berbatov! Then we’ll have Rooney, Berba, Tevez and Gudj! That matches Barca aint it ;)

  38. Red Ranter says:

My only hope here is that we better have a good sell on clause in the deal we made with Villarreal. Because last time, when we sold Forlan we didn’t do that, and they now sold him for 12 million quid. There is a good chance that if Rossi does fulfil his potential, he will be sold off to a bigger club for a good fee and we will be the beneficiaries of such a deal.

Anyway, on to other things, lads, please don’t expect the world from Fergie. Berbatov? Alves? Not going to happen. Brown is a very good right back at the moment. He’s not given enough credit for it. Berbatov would be priced out of a move (that said, Tevez is coming for around the same.) But it would be either Berba or Tevez but even if the Tevez move fails, Anelka would be more likely that either Berbatov or Gudjohnsen.

    [Unitedinwords]

He was not going to tell MU magazine (where the quote came from) that he was rubbish…

Do you only think in superlatives? Ruud could have said that he was a good player, or talked about other attributes, say he has good vision or something like that. Or he could have merely said he was a good finisher or something. He chose to say he was among the ‘best’ which is something even SAF said many times over. Anyway, forget it. The reason people get worked up is because, lot of us have observed him grow as a player since he signed from Parma. We all want him to do well, and suddenly you find him jettisoned off without being given a chance. For heaven’s sake, Richardson’s got more games!

As I read the option on Rossi – It’s a right of first refusal = if VillaReal don’t want to sell them ManU can’t execute the option. If Villa do consider selling them, ManU would have the option, first choice, of buying him back at a predetermined price.

You can’t really blame the lad for wanting first team futbol and as SAF couldn’t guarantee him that, on a regular basis, he wanted to move. If you feel that it’s unfortunate we are losing a young lad I ask you this. “Who would you have sit so Rossi can be in the starting XI day in a day out?” I can’t come up with an answer to this and I’m guessing SAF couldn’t either which is why was willing to move on. United were pretty much played off the pitch, though shouldn’t be down 3-1. For my money all 3 goals are evra’s fault. First a missed header on the 6 yard line, led to first goal then lost posession (admittedly looked a foul, wasn’t given) which led to second and third time barely made it back into United’s half by the time the goal was scored. He’s clearly waaaay to attacking.

United central midfield have virtually had no posession. Inter own the centre of the pitch. Kind of worrying, that’s not a poor team out there either…

Erm, you guys, Fergie masterstroke on this deal is that United have a clause in his cintract at Villareal to take him back in the future?? And Red Ranter- your lack of faith in the youth system is a wee bit melodramatic, dare I say it, almost read like you were doom saying- you forget the likes of Evans, Eagles and Campbell to name but three players that have already shown big things, all youth product, all to see action over the next season and a half. Our youth setup is second to none but if some of the youngsters want more footy then they want and have to move- Rossi wanted more first team footy then could be promised and so the deal was worked out best for everyone- he gets top class footy at Villareal and if he cranks it up we activate the clause in his contract- happy days.

WTF its not his fitness thats the worry, all he is saying is he needs match fitness which is complete bull shit not from tevez but there is nothing wrong with him at all, he was at the copa america and even if we signed him a month ago he still wouldnt have played for us because, like anderson and heinze, he would have been off on a holiday!!!

Could somebody please open my eyes and explain to me what exactly is the problem with Rossi that made SAF never rally give the lad a chance. The young striker literally saved his side from relegation by scoring at will in Serie A? For me Rossi was a freebie striker solution that carried great potential for the future as well as benefiting United with his present form. There is something that we poor fans are just not aware of. It seems to me that if SAF were ALWAYS truly a great judge of talent, it would be Rossi not the cry baby Saha fighting for a place in the starting eleven. Tevez by no means is a guaranteed solution up front. I think his lack of fitness and training with the team as well as his language barrier may cause some early problems. Saha is injury prone and lacks passion to be a part of this squad. Yet he is still here while Rossi, a player who was dying to be part of United’s plans is shipped off to Spain. I just don’t get it. Rossi would have become a much greater contributor to Saha and Smith. Now who will back up Tevez and Rooney? The thought of the sleepy eyed Saha or Old Ole gives me great hours of great anxiety. Much like the Heinze affair, this is another of those very few mistakes that SAF and the United front office have made. This one I think they will regret big time. Watch Rossi score between 15 and 20 goals for middle of the table Villareal this season. Ahhh what might have been?
