“He is not the player we need”

mataThe signing of Juan Mata could prove to be a key factor in our challenge for top 4. My initial thought was “He is not the player we need”

As a versatile attacking midfielder, it’s clear that he has demonstrated at Chelsea he is at his best in behind the striker, with right midfield being his other position. To me, Wayne Rooney is a better a No. 10 than Juan Mata is. As for right midfield, despite Antonio Valencia underperforming this season he offers an incredible amount of pace, a trait Mata does not appear to have in mass.

I presume David Moyes is looking to play Mata in behind the striker. With that in mind as well as the hefty fee, I think David Moyes is adding him to the team to prepare us for life without Wayne Rooney. Is Wayne Rooney going to be a Manchester United player this time next year? I don’t think so.

Going back to my initial point, I still do not think Mata is the answer to resolve the problems that we are having in midfield.

Yes we are lacking creativity in the final third but we are also lacking a general in the centre of the park, someone who can dominate a midfield battle and really influence the players around him. Of course we could list the likes of ?lkay Gündo?an, Arturo Vidal and Paul Pogba, but it is imperative that we secure Champions League football next season but whether Juan Mata is the right man at the moment for us, we have to wait and see although there is no denying he will lift a demoralised group of players psychologically as well as providing quality and guile on the pitch; hopefully that will prove enough to get us into that top 4.

  • I am sorry to break it to you guys but Wayne Rooney WILL be at Manchester United next season as he has basically signed a new contract in whiuch apparently will be named captain. I am also soprry to say that you guys are very clueless and jump into the first thing you hear. Valencia offers great pace? and we don’t need Mata? when has Valencia ever taken someone on and who in the right mind would compare him to Juan Mata. Goodbye 8-O

  • Not the player we need? what? someone who can kick a fucking ball straight? We must be the worst passers in the league. 6 more Mata’s please.

  • I don’t quite agree with your story Sir. Juan Mata is a very versatile player. He can play the number 7, 10 or 11 role. Undoubtedly his best position us the number 10 but he is almost just as efficient in the other roles. Although we don’t have that midfield player we need yet, I think Mata would make a difference. He has the ability to unlock defences. He always did that while at Chelsea.

Our wingers (except Januzaj) have shown their abysmal form this in the last two seasons and we all know that. Antonio Valencia’s weak points are very worrying. He’s so one footed and it shows when he’s defending. Sometimes his crosses worry me. Ashley Young and Nani are highly inconsistent.

Wayne Rooney is likely to renew his contract, various Media outlets are reporting it including the BBC, which means that there’s a huge element of truth in it. So we could be looking at playing without wingers at some point.

  • Yep. Unless Mata was bought to hang out on the wing, it is difficult to see how 4 good players fighting for the only 1 creative position (which if fit automatically goes to Rooney) can be a good idea unless there is a serious change in tactics and formation.

  • what? Mata not the type of player we need agree but you never say no to a world class player we dint need rvp look what he did arsenal dint need ozil look at the boost hes given their players mata is class pure class a player with 20 goals and 35 assists last year will have an impact and a big one I believe this is a step in the right direction for united 1 big signing with many more to come!

  • If one of Rooneys demands is that he be made captain, they should shave ripped it up the second they got to that paragraph and walked away.

  • Is Moyes Rooney’s bitch or is Manchester United Rooney’s bitch?

  • “As for right midfield, despite Antonio Valencia underperforming this season he offers an incredible amount of pace”

Are we talking about the same person? The one that has lost his pace and glorifies the term uncreative?

“Is Wayne Rooney going to be a Manchester United player this time next year? I don’t think so.”

Why not? He must be a player of Manchester United next year. Cause he is a top 10 player and each time he gets knock out for a couple of months the team is shit. Why sell him?

“Yes we are lacking creativity in the final third but we are also lacking a general in the centre of the park, someone who can dominate a midfield battle and really influence the players around him.”

Everyone agrees about the midfield problem and we surely need speed and power in this area.
But, do we really have uncreative players upfront? Let’s see. Rooney, RvP, Mata, Januzaj. Good if they start in a 4-4-2 and even better in a 4-2-3-1. And their backups are Welbeck (not crative but with his off the ball movement and his energy he can be perfect for a 4-2-3-1), Kagawa, Zaha and Nani. And of course the uncreative Valencia and Young who I’d better see out of the team ASAP.

“I presume David Moyes is looking to play Mata in behind the striker.”

Not really. Cause Mata can play as a winger and all I can see (with Moyes’s conservative eyes) is Mata left, Valencia right, Rooney free role and upfront, and RvP upfront.

To me, you have managed to write one of the most awkward posts in this site.

  • Yes I agree. There has to be a massive turnaround and overhaul of tactics if we are going to justify the very expensive purchase of Mata. If he arrived to simply replace Kagawa and Ashley Young on the left wing then that is unforgivable. He is a very versatile attacker and not a winger or midfielder. If you play him wide, it has to be as LAM or as an inverted winger or interiore. No wide play and crossing.I’m sick up to here with it. This is the perfect opportunity to dump Valencia and his persistent crossing. Otherwise we could duplicate the Kagawa syndrome for close to £40m and once again the whole world will laugh at us all over again. Now what I know is Mata is a very good player and the kind that can really adapt, but playing him on the wing is a terrible idea. Moyes should stop it forthwith, this obsession with cornerflag football. In Kagawa,Mata,Januzaj we have players incredibly more talented than the cross loving duo of Young and Valencia. Play a system that suits your best players and not your worst.

    • @Jay Wire: I agree with your comment -as ussual- but I don’t think this is what this article is about.

P.S.: Your comments are bliss and I know you understand. football.

  • mataaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!!!!! opinion is like an arse. every one has one. just like you!
    :-?

  • I am the writer of this article. I wrote it before talks about Rooney’s new contract had begun. I agree with a couple of the comments regarding Mata having the Ozil effect and lifting the entire club however, where is he going to play? Is Moyes going to switch the formation around completely? Is Januzaj going to get less playing time? Is Kagawa going to end up leaving? The signing of Mata is a good one but by signing a deeper midfielder like Paul Pogba, Toni Kroos etc, we could keep to our offensive player s to do what they do. Mata is a creative player but if we are looking to keep to our philosophy, where does Juan Mata fit into that? And I would be very happy to see Wayne Rooney still at the club, not too sure what him having a say on our transfers is all about to be honest.

    • @Jordan Griffin: You have a valid point and you have a right to raise it. For those that criticise your article, let them feel free to try and better it by writing one themselves. For those that disagree with your opinion…fuck them. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. All of our opinions are equal…it means jack shit equally. Most people need a new signing like a drug addict need a fix. At least you’re looking beyond that.

  • Doesn’t seem like we’ll be changing tactics anytime soon…
