Interview with Aon – Manchester United’s future sponsors
Chris Toy (Studs Up) recently interviewed David Prosperi, Vice President (Global Public Relations) at Aon. It’s an interesting read and it’s nice to see how Manchester United is viewed from outside football i.e. once you take away football partisanship.
For those of us who have supported the club from before 99 or even before the Premier League started (I got in at ’94), it’s quite amazing to see United completely dominate English football for the best part of two decades and as a result become the most popular and most valuable sports team in the world.
It’s good to focus on the here and now and we’ve seen with Liverpool how ‘past glories’ get you nowhere, but once in a while it’s good to step back and get some perspective on what United, and to a great extent, what the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson and (Sir) Ryan Giggs have achieved.
In any case, here’s the interview with David Prosperi (Aon).

Well done USA anyway for getting to the final against all expectations, and beating the unbeaten Spain, and scaring the shit out of those Brazilians in the first half. You are coming along as a football nation. However, I have to say that Brazil undesputedly deserved the win, because USA tried to hold onto a lead, and weren’t pressing im MF like they did in the 1st half. USA guilty of giving the ball away cheaply in the 2nd half also.

Macheda and Welbeck are way younger than Gibson so you’d understand that Fergie sees them as ones for the future. But Gibson at his age would be expected to play more of a part in first team affairs especially as our midfield is a lot weaker than our strike force. That is why I assumed Fergie didn’t rate him.

@gator: US played out of their socks, mate.
Great showing from a well outmatched team – they just got worn down by the movement of the Brazilians. Alves made a big difference, after he came on.

@Gabriel: Going way back to comment 373, yes i am english and yes i do like to see young english talent in our team but it just seems in england, a player is the next big star, a wonder kid as soon as he kicks a bloody ball. I mean come on fabian delph scores a few goals in league 1 for gods sake and immediately every club is rumoured to be linked with him, bids starting at £7 million and above its a god damn joke. League 1 football wow, considering players like vidic, evra, clichy, kolo toure, lampard cost that much or less for their teams puts it into context, they want that much for a guy who plays in a crap league.
Yes other leagues are like that too, douglas costa for £20+ million is a joke aswell but it just seems in england a player is getting hyped up and big transfer fees stuck on him when hes done jack. Anyway thats my opinion and i dont want to go on about the state of english football cos i really couldnt care less, as long as united are doing well is all that bothers me and thats how it always will be.
By the way saw the game with brazil today and have watched them the whole tournament and have been pretty impressed with luis fabiano, any one think he may be a consideration. All be it not my first choice but hes still a good player and his goal scoring record as of late for brazil and sevilla have been outstanding in the last 2 years. May be a case of another brazilian who looks all that in spain but nothing much here, but he should be considered.

Can someone tell me why we sold Howard? I know he made a few rare mistakes back then..but he’s been MASSIVE this tournament (as well this season)…kept USA in the game till the end…

@Dan: I don’t mean to split hairs, here, but if you look back to your comment #380, you clearly stated “me” and not “fergie”. So there is a difference.
I just felt that the evidence is mounting up in the case for new CMF’ers. In fact it would suprise the crap out of me if we didn’t get at least one!!

@antsBoy: He was player of the tournament imo, but Gabriel just said kaka got that award.
Very solid keeper, i dont think he was united class but hes definitely one of the best in the prem. I always felt given time he could become a class act and he has proved that at everton. Remember a save he made when he was with us at stamford bridge in his first season, made a save at his near post which bounced in the middle of the box, the goal gaping, lampard i think it was struck it and howard made a world class save to stop it going in. It was a great double save, one of the best i have seen. Unfortunately though he suffered from 2nd season syndrome.

@Matt: Yeah, Howard has come along leaps and bounds over the last couple of seasons. His last season with United was shaky, though, and after Bartez, I don’t think SAF wanted to take anymore chances at GK.
Too bad for us, and what’s more, the whole Foster scenario could go down the same path!!

@colver: Valencia is strictly a winger or wide midfielder. Perhaps with time he could adjust but that is not why he was bought. He was bought for the right side. Fortunately the rumours about Nani going over to Wigan were false. I would have lost it if that had happened. The only way I allow Nani to leave is if we buy a great LW and or he is swapped for a CMF like Moutinho.

@colver: I think a more conservative figure for that trio up front would be closer to 45 to 50 goals collectively. Rooney and Aguero can score but they do so much more. Berbatov is just not prolific or aggressive enough to figure him for more than a dozen goals in the EPL alone. 60 goals in all games maybe, but 45 in the EPL alone.

@Dan: Where have you heard this mate? Did you grab that out of that fantastic source FIFA 09? Even in South America Valencia was an out and out winger. I have never heard of him ever playing anywhere else in his pro career.
It’s Alex Sanchez who can play across the midfield except at DMF.

@Gabriel: Who actually decides on the winners of these awards anyway? If it’s solely Blatter, then it would just make it a PR exercise. His only interest is to promote the stars in order to promote the game.
Unrepresentative of the true value of the players to the tournament, but hardly suprising, given his position!!

@RedDevilEddy: Any chance of you doing a Michael Ballack video for me to the theme “Requiem for a Dream” REMIX by Clint Mansell?
If you do, I’ll lay of Anderson for a bit.
Just kidding, but I would strongly suggest that them for any video you do that has power and greatness in it. The Ronaldo one with that theme would be out of this world. Even the Rooney one because of their pace and electric style of play. That them for me is the greatest piece of orchestral adrenaline that I have ever heard. I loved it when Peter Jackson used it for his trailer to the Two Towers. I hate the fact that Sky Sports use it as their theme though.

@Grognard: Listen, mate, I think you’re jumping the gun here. If at the end of the transfer season, and we haven’t addressed the CMF issue, I’ll be asking some tough questions too!!
My opinion is that we need MF’ers, it’s based on facts I believe to be true, and therefore, I expect my concerns to be answered in the form of player purchases.
My opinion, however, is not that SAF or the corps of United management is being laxi-daisical, being incompetent, or being frugal with the CR funds, …yet!!
