Manchester United were beaten 2-1 at Huddersfield Town today, suffering our first defeat of the 2017-18 Premier League season.
Perhaps playing in Lisbon on Wednesday night took its toll on a team that went into the game with six first team players out through injury. We then lost Phil Jones to injury in the 23rd minute.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Jose Mourinho had this to say:
“We deserved it. The team that wanted to work more, wanted to compete more, wanted to be more aggressive, won. So when the best team wins I have nothing to say.
I’m not going to be critical of my players with you. I have to analyse with them and if I want to be a critic, to be a critic with them.
I just want to be as honest and pragmatic as possible and say that for me, the best team won.
I was not expecting that, but it was the reality of the game. The team that started with emotion, aggression, intensity, desire; the team that was playing the game of their lives was the team that won. So we didn’t deserve more.”
After having just one shot on target in our 0-0 draw at Liverpool last weekend and not creating many chances at Benfica midweek, we were disappointing in the final third again today in only firing three shots on target.
Mistakes from David de Gea and Victor Lindelof led to each of Huddersfield’s goals in a game that we simply did not show up.
This defeat leaves us five points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.
