Jose set to sign new contract

Jose Mourinho arrived at Manchester United in the summer of 2016, replacing the outgoing Louis van Gaal immediately after we won the FA Cup that season.

The Portuguese coach signed a three-year contract at Old Trafford and arrived with a reputation of not staying very long at clubs.

Indeed, Mourinho’s longest spell with a club was his first time in charge of Chelsea where he stayed for just over three years before being dismissed in September 2007.  He lasted three years at Real Madrid for whom he joined from Internazionale after staying for just two seasons.

The boss is halfway through his three-year contract at Manchester United and is now believed to be on the verge of signing a new deal that will keep him here until 2021.

Sky Sports News understand that Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes has been in talks with the club since October over a new deal and that it is now close to being concluded.

Should that be true Jose Mourinho has made a good start to his career at Manchester United.  Last season we lifted the Community Shield, EFL Cup and Europa League.  The latter put us in this season’s Champions League where we have made the second round, and we are currently second in the Premier League – three points ahead of both Liverpool and Chelsea directly below us.

On top of this we have a relatively young squad.  Star midfielder Paul Pogba is only 24; the same age as striker Romelu Lukaku.  Centre-backs Eric Bailly and Phil Jones are 23 and 25 respectively, and Luke Shaw, who is holding down the left-back spot currently, is only 22.

David de Gea is only 27 and our left wing pair of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are 20 and 22 respectively.  Of those the wrong side of 30, Zlatan Ibrahimovic is 36 and not expected to be offered a new deal beyond this season.  Likewise Michael Carrick, who is the same age.  Captain Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are both 32.

All in all this looks like a positive move from the Manchester United hierarchy to tie down Mourinho to a long-term deal and hopefully give the manager money to spend both this month and in the summer.
