Liverpool reject United approach

Raheem-SterlingManchester United’s approach for Raheem Sterling has unsurprisingly been turned down by Liverpool, who have told United that the 20-year-old will not leave Anfield this summer.

United made a surprise approach for Sterling, who has told Liverpool he will not sign a new deal after claiming he felt bullied into extending his existing contract, but the inquiry has been swiftly rebuffed by Brendan Rodgers’ club, according to the Liverpool Echo.

No player has moved directly between the clubs since Phil Chisnall joined Liverpool from United in 1964 but, according to the Mirror, Sterling’s agent, Aidy Ward, will discuss United’s approach for Sterling when he meets Rodgers and Ian Ayre on Friday.

Ward, who on Thursday called Jamie Carragher “a knob”, claimed he did not care about the reputation of the club or the PR surrounding it, insisting his duty was to get Sterling the best possible deal.

The 20-year-old has scored 11 goals this season and United’s approach could see the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City, both of which have been linked with the player before, entering the race, with Sterling expected to be determined to force his way out of Anfield this summer.

However, considering United have just completed the signing of Memphis Depay for £25m from PSV Eindhoven and given the number of wide players already at Van Gaal’s disposal, it seems unlikely that Sterling will move down the East Lancs Road this summer.
