LVG confident De Gea will stay

Manchester-United-v-Arsenal (3)Louis Van Gaal has insisted he remains confident David De Gea will stay at Manchester United this summer, despite Real Madrid’s advances.

The Spaniard has repeatedly been linked to a move back to his hometown, with last season’s Champions League winners desperate to make him the replacement to Iker Casillas.

However, after admitting last week that De Gea’s future remained in doubts and that United had drawn up a list of replacements, Van Gaal has changed his tune and said he believes the former Atletico Madrid man will be at the club next season.

“First we have to see if De Gea is leaving,” Van Gaal said when asked whether Victor Valdes could replace the 24-year-old next season.

“Then we shall talk about the other things. I believe still that David de Gea will stay.”

The United manager said the time De Gea was taking over deciding his future was encouraging.

“He is loved by the fans, he loves the environment,” he said.

“When he goes he loses that. It’s a difficult decision, because he is not making the decision [yet].”
