LVG has found right formula

Liverpool-v-Manchester-United (3)Michael Carrick believes that Manchester United have finally found the winning formula and that their 2-1 win against Liverpool on Sunday highlighted they’ve finally turned a corner.

Louis Van Gaal has struggled to impose his style onto his team since arriving at Old Trafford in July, with United coming under intense scrutiny for serving up some insipid football during the Dutchman’s first eight months at the helm.

However, back-to-back wins against Spurs and Liverpool have seen United open a five-point gap in the race for a Champions League spot, while the team has finally started to play with the verve and self-confidence United fans have been demanding this season.

Carrick, who signed a 12-month extension late last week, believes the improved performances are due to Van Gaal finally finding the right formula for his team. United’s win at Anfield came without Robin Van Persie, while Angel Di Maria and Radamel Falcao were both introduced in the second half.

“I think it tells you about the squad and the strength in depth,” said Carrick.

“Those boys [Di Maria, Van Persie and Falcao] are all top players, but I think we’ve got a number of players the manager can choose from, which is great.

“Sometimes different games throw up different scenarios and different systems maybe, but the last two games have gone very well for us.”

Juan Mata scored twice to give United their second win in three seasons at Anfield and Carrick insisted the Spaniard has been subject to undeserved criticism during his team at United.

“He’s always been a great player,” said Carrick.

“I think he’s always been important to us because he brings so much to the team and so much ability.

“You’ve seen it all there, in terms of what he brings to us, and I thought he was terrific. I thought his overall play was good and he obviously scored both goals.”

“I thought the first one was a really good finish and the second one was sensational. He’s just so clever. He moves the ball, takes up good positions, he’s dangerous and just so intelligent.
