Man Utd 1-0 Barcelona: Reds March On To Moscow
Crisis? What crisis? That was so easy wasn’t it? Surely we’re going to wallop every team that comes our way from now on, aren’t we?
Okay, let me not attempt to jinx the team anymore, but to quote a certain Scottish manager — I forget his name — football… bloody hell!
United beat Barcelona 1-0 at home to finally reach the finals of the Champions’ League for the first time since ‘99. If you are a fan of symbolism, there’s plenty to talk about here; Paul Scholes, the man along with Keane who had to sit out of the final last time, picked out the best possible time for his trademark screamer — something that he hadn’t done since, I believe, the draw against Portsmouth last year; we won our last Champions’ League in Barcelona, and we beat them to get into the final; our last final came on Sir Matt Busby’s 90th birthday, and it would be equally memorable this time as it is on the 50th anniversary year of the Munich disaster; and with our 100% record in Champions’ League finals, I’d fancy us to win it. Bring ‘em on, ‘dippers or Chavs.
Back to the game, the lads gave us a performance that was entirely a contrast to what we’ve managed to witness over the past couple of weeks. It could be said that we didn’t get a home game for a while now, and it showed yesterday, as the crowd was, for a want of a better word, outstanding. The atmosphere was electric, and even I could feel it as I watched it in my home theatre system. Hopefully they didn’t damage their vocal chords too badly because they still have a big job to do against a potential banana skin in West Ham. But that’s for later.
Fergie started with an attack minded 4-4-2 that was full of pace. He said he wanted to give our side every chance of attacking and going for it from the whistle and his staring XI mirrored that. True, the absence of Vidic and Rooney did cast doubts on many fans. And even the start — the first 15 mins or so — of the game was nervy as Barcelona completely hogged possession. But the Ginger Ninja’s goal changed it all, and also came much against the run of play; Ronaldo lost the ball which Zambrotta weakly cleared and it fell nicely for Scholes to send one right past Victor Valdes at full stretch — top stuff, and what a time. And the normally expressionless face of the Prince was all smiles, as he realised what had just happened.
From then on United got its swagger back, and should have really buried the game by half time. But it was not to be and the second half saw Barcelona once again dominated possession without really creating much as the defence came to the fore. There has been much talk from critics saying when push coming to shove, United resort to long ball tactics and containment. I agree, but with the caveat that just about any team, especially the English and Italian ones, resort to this strategy in the Champions’ League. Arsenal, for all their ‘beautiful football’, lumped the ball up to Henry in a 4-5-1 on their path to the Champions’ League final two seasons ago. This was not ugly football in the least. It was a victory for a team that was well organised and had a grasp of the pace of the game. We created enough chances for a team in the lead; a great one-two between Ronaldo and Tevez, some good breaks forward; a couple of gilt edged chances in the penalty area that, on another day, would have gone in.
Now for the performances. The defenders should take credit for yesterday’s display, again. Rio was, as usual, fantastic — I still wonder if we would have actually conceded three goals at the San Siro had Ferdinand played. Hargreaves showed the lung busting energy and his versatility for a make shift right back — and to his credit he has played three games in a week which is something for his injury ravaged season. I think he will be an even better player next season when he gets a nice rest in the summer. Evra played like a man possessed, while Messi did make forays on the right wing it was because Evra spent a lot of time up the pitch. When he was one-on-one with Messi though, he did a good job. And Wes Brown… well, it speaks volumes about his performance if you say Vidic wasn’t missed. Exactly the kind of player you need in your club.
In midfield, Carrick and Scholes did the job that was needed of them. Not spectacular, disciplined in defence and credit must go to them as they were up against Toure, Deco and Xavi.
In attack Nani, was about average because of his wastefulness and lack of decision making, but he will turn out better with every season. Park was brilliant and he has been so in the Champions’ League this season. He is quite easily the most hardworking player on the pitch. He gives everything from constantly running for 90 minutes to tracking back and harrying the opposition. He did everything you could ask for. He’s been forever the forgotten man, but his contribution should never go unnoticed. In my book he was among the men of the match. Ditto for Carlos Tevez. Ran like a mad man; he has an air of Gattuso in him harrying defenders and tracking back — more than making up for the absence of Rooney. Played like his life depended on it.
And finally coming to the person who is usually the focus in big games like these — Cristiano Ronaldo. He wasn’t outstanding, nor was he completely subdued. He was initially played up the park and was hence isolated, but when he moved over to the wing he got more of the ball and his performance was definitely a major improvement over Camp Nou. And not just that: he’s also shown the desire to track back and clear balls out of danger using his aerial presence. A performance from him that showed his understanding of the game more than trying to look clever. He may never have the close control of Messi, but his blistering pace, aerial ability, strength and fitness make him a more rounded player than the Argentine whizkid; you just can’t compare the two at the moment, although considering all of Barca’s attacks went through Messi, credit should be given to the young lad. He’s truly a master in the making — the real deal in Argentina’s production line of ‘next Maradona’s‘.
On the performance, it wasn’t vintage all out attack football — that would be too naive wouldn’t it? It wasn’t ugly, last ditch defending that characterised Liverpool on their path to Istanbul. It was a performance from a side that was assured and knew how to win the game despite all the things Barcelona had to throw at them.
The 1-0 win, was certainly not very good for nerves, but we’ll take it any day wouldn’t we? Credit to all the fans once again.
Next stop West Ham. Hopefully the boys don’t lose their intensity against inferior opposition. After all there’s really no harm in our side going full pelt at this last stretch. Just two games to the title, and another to potentially complete a double, and a famous season, without doubt.
Believe!
We’ll never die!

I pee-d a little when i saw Giggs and Fletcher coming in.Giggs was giving goosebumps to me and wished those dying minutes to get over. But hell that ref.6 minutes!! what was he waiting for.Someone to blow him
But in the end we pull out with a nice win.
Messi did steal my heart, what a talent. He was one man army breaking United every now and then.
Zambrotta was a bitch whole night. That sneaky little bastard,Always ugly!!.
Tevez was the my Man of the match.Brilliant play by him.Energetic, high passion.Never seen him running so eager with balls.liked how he kept running behind Barca men to sneak in small tackles.
I don’t know why but Hargo was scary at times. He used to be in confusion whether to clear to pass it back.He did brought us nervy moments, but Ferdi and Brown were always there.
And hey i did right about Park. His play was also as important as Tevez.
Weee are Going to Moscow.ROCK ON UNITED !!
Players who need to improve:- Nani,Hargo,
April 30th, 2008 at 11:13
hats off for the boys..i want chelsea..
April 30th, 2008 at 11:29
I was there last night. I was right in line with the flight of Scholes goal! The atmosphere was amazing. I’ve almost lost my voice.
100% on effort for all players. Although I must say Nani needs to improve his decision making. Again he made some wrong decisions like he did against Chelsea. But I guess Ronnie used to be the same!
I want Liverpool in the final. And hopefully Gerrard will be booked tonight so won’t play in the final! I know it’s a bad thing to say but it would be good!
Only 3 more cup finals to go. Win them all and the double is coming home!
We’re in the final! We’re goin to Moscow! I can’t believe it!
April 30th, 2008 at 11:31
What a night, fingernail marks are still well imprinted in the arms of my chair…so tense! I thought the team played pretty well, given Barca’s ability, and just about edged it. We had the better chances, despite the posession. Was impressed with many of our players, and Ronaldo demonstrated work ethic! Who’d of thunk it!
Not wanting to taint the mood, but anyone heard any rumours of our injuries? Vidic, Rooney and Evra…those are some big players to be missing the next two games. If only we’d not lost to Chavski, we could have rested everyone before the final…but alas…we do it the hard way.
April 30th, 2008 at 11:34
Best play by Park since the PSV-Milan Semi-final. Incredible player he was everywhere in the pitch and very determined. Nani how can you miss these two? Please SAF, make him shot in target.
The screamer by Scholes was hair-rising. I just loved it. The Chivas was swallowed so sweetly after that! But there was always a hole in the midfield -cause of Scholes- when we were on defence.
For me the defence was shaky cause there were moments were we could have held the ball rather than give it to the Cardinals … Catalans …. Whatever. They are not as strong as we are. Maybe they are faster but our players could hold up the ball. They could even play dirty but they didn’t. That’s why we are a beautiful team to whatch.
Park you should be a startin XI lad
April 30th, 2008 at 11:40
Dude, no way hargo needs 2 improve.Yes,Iniesta did cut in,but he never got past Hargreaves. Also nothing meaningful came from his wing.Hargreaves, stole the ball numerous times and he had 2 deal with the added pressure of an excellent Eric Abidal.I can’t understand why people are not giving us the credit 4 the attacking game we played.Tevez was immense in hustling players but what of his excellent ball retention and how he masterfully spread out play to the wings. What of Park’s offensive crosses and his near assist to Nani. What of his shot on goal.Nani, though underwhelming at times, brilliantly danced THREE defenders 2 confusion and then wildly blasted over. But he had a great chance. What of Tevez and Ronaldo combining 4 some beautiful touches, culminating in Tevez forcing Valdez into a save. And Evra’s offensive forays and the triangular flicks with Tevez and Ronaldo.Yes we were outpossessed. But,outplayed, outmanouvered or out thought,NO WAY!! We had the more clear cut chances, were the more direct team and we made the most of our chances.Evidence?Scholes:1 shot on goal,1 shot on target and 1 goal. Deco:about 5 shots at goal,2 on target,0 goals. NB-Evra ruled Messi on their one V ones
April 30th, 2008 at 12:22
Superb performance from everyone!! the lads really deserved it, great tempo always attacking, I thought hargo was teriffic plus give the guy a break he is not a natural right back!!
That was a proper Manchester United performance.
April 30th, 2008 at 12:24
I have emerged from behind my sofa now…great result, bloody tense game. Enough has been said about the tactics, but here are my player ratings for the night, let me know if you agree or disagree:
EVDS - 5/10 - couple of decent stops, although you’d have been disappointed if he’d let them in. Very shaky otherwise. Completely fluffed his first kick (something of a pattern in recent weeks), and after that just made sure of touch with subsequent kicks - not up to our usual standard of recycling the ball out of defence. Also dropped that cross, which he was lucky Evra got to first.
Evra - 7/10 - a mixed bag, both defensively and going forward. Really good one-on-one with Messi, but showed him inside too much for my liking into possible shooting positions. Barca aren’t a big team and don’t get players into the box for crosses, so why not show Messi outside and make him cross? By the same token, he was a constant threat going forward, but sometimes overdid it (particularly a break near the end when he got ahead of Ronaldo, who promptly lost the ball). I’m all for the attacking play, but you’re marking Messi, for god’s sake!
Brown - 10/10 - man of the match for me. He was sensational. None of the jitters we have come to expect, just a towering performance. What was especially noticeable was how quickly he got to players, trying to prevent them from turning - Eto’o was shut right down because of this, and it prevented them keeping the ball up front as much as they would like.
Rio - 9/10 - Very, very good, what we have come to expect from Rio all season. His leadership skills just get better and better, and he was a cool head under pressure. Not afraid to bring the ball out of defence either.
Hargreaves - 8/10 - neither Iniesta or Henry got any change out of him. Not his best position, but he applied himself superbly and let nothing through. Only gripe is that he didn’t get forward much, but what with “Bomber” Evra on the other wing, that was probably a good thing.
Park - 8/10 - terrific energy, good both going forward and in his own half. There’s a graphic in the Times this morning which shows every place on the pitch he touched the ball - he was everywhere. I love the guy, but he still needs more in the final third to be truly top class - he always looks like someone who hopes he might score rather than one who knows he will.
Scholes - 8.5/10 - shocking tackle first up, but it was all good from then. Say no more about the goal. He was crucial to us having more and better possession than in the first leg. He rarely gave it away, contributed defensively without giving away too many more free kicks and was quick to loose balls in midfield.
Carrick - 8/10 - like Scholes, except with better tackling and no goal. Between them they ensured we retained the ball in midfield and used it effectively. Good energy, and his defensive positioning was astute. Has a really good patch just before and just after the goal where he ran the game for 15 minutes.
Nani - 7/10 - up and down. Great work rate, and made some really useful breaks. I’m impressed with his first touch control, which often finds space in a crowded area. Can beat people too, but his decision making is suspect in the final third.
Ronaldo - 6.5/10 - better than his boo-boys would have you believe, but not as good as he can be. I thought the ref (who was otherwise excellent and fair throughout) took a real disliking to him, and gave anything 50-50 to Zambrotta (who used all his niggly Italian know-how to wind Ronaldo up). Still involved a lot - one assist and one shot which on another day would have led to a decisive scoreline.
Tevez - 8/10 - what a total lunatic. The way he charged around after the ball was insane, but it didn’t half force mistakes out of Barca. Held the ball up well when it came to him (something Rooney was unable to do in the first leg), battled back when we lost the ball and could have had a goal.
April 30th, 2008 at 12:26
Very emotional, very special…….
When you are at this stage of ECL, all those beautiful football or ugly football nonsense go straight out the window. Its all about character and fighting spirit. United have definitely showed that yesterday.
I dont know any other club in this world with players with such determination, discipline and spirit.
Well done United.
April 30th, 2008 at 12:49
How come no one mentions that we have gone like more than 450 minutes since we conceded a goal in the champions league and we are unbeaten,on our greatest winning run in the champions league(at home)
April 30th, 2008 at 13:05
Oh, and isn’t it great that none of our players are suspended for the final?
April 30th, 2008 at 13:14
whoever comes, chelsea or liverpool, i want their fullest strength side. Gerrard Carragher let them all play. Atleast then they wont have the pathetic excuse of having lost due to suspended players. And ahhh, what a sweet victory that will be! Bring it on!

Be mindful that Evra was on a yellow and would have missed the final if he had tried to tackle Messi too much! Prob the boss ordered him not to do that and just double/triple team on Messi whenever he reaches anywhere near the box otherwise let him run free. Dangerous tactic but was effective yesternight as if Evra had picked up a yellow then we wouldnt have any equally good replacement for the all important final!
April 30th, 2008 at 13:32
I thought Silvestre had an excellent game against Chelscum.
April 30th, 2008 at 13:34
Jos,
Interesting point, but I doubt Evra was under instructions to let Messi run free at any point. I can believe he was told to shepherd Messi into the centre backs and midfielders to avoid a yellow for chopping him down on the outside, though.
Out of interest, who were our other players who were walking the fine yellow line? Any takers?
April 30th, 2008 at 13:59
Vidic, Rooney and Evra should all be fit for West Ham! Amazing display from the team. It was the team that brought us to Moscow, and the team that will win the Champions League.
P.S. Did you guys see the fan that tried to get together with the United players(08:44)?
April 30th, 2008 at 14:02
how would messi look in the united squad??? i’d take him over nani anyday but fair play we have been in an incredible season 3 matches 3 wins 3 cup finals double champs and technically a treble with the charity sheild!
April 30th, 2008 at 14:03
A wonderful result! The energy up front really won it for me, Tevez, Park, Nani and Ronaldo, running around biting at the defenders…they made them look ridiculous at one point
I was begging for the second goal to go in, cause Barca were looking groggy for a while.
Barca never really threatened, Messi is good at dribbling but he created very few openings. Ronaldo on the other hand, had an average game but still created some very dangerous chances for the team.
Ronaldo does need to start giving good defenders a little bit more credit though…he should stop trying to dribble through 3 of them bunched together, he just ends up losing the ball…draw them in, then pass it…you can’t get through a brick wall
Maybe it happens more often when he plays up front?
He will get even better next year, he’s still got a lot left to improve on…he’s a great passer of the ball, maybe he’ll learn to enjoy giving the killer pass to others instead of handing the ball over reluctantly
My men of the match: All of them! Special mention goes to Rio (booming headers), Scholes (laser controlled missile), Evra (bravery to go forward, a fighter) and the greatest defensive asset out there, the one and only Carlos Tevez!
Looking forward to tonight’s match…I’m hoping for a Liverpool win! Chelsea are just wrong, they remind me of the baddies at the end of Shaolin Soccer
P.S. I believe Nani can become a great player, he needs more playing time to make the right choices, hopefully next season
April 30th, 2008 at 14:23
Just came up for a song for Wes Brown! I dont know if he has one already, but he deserves one. Just heard the Dolly Parton “Jolene” song on the radio, I thought it would fit well for a Wes song. Here it goes:
Wes Brown
Wes Brown
Wes Brown, Wes Brooown
Tackling like a mad man, Wes Brown.
His heart is red, his kit is too
His desire will get us through
To the final, to win it with Wes Brown.
The usual song goes like:
Jolene
Jolene
Jolene, Joleeene
Im begging of you, please dont take my man.
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of golden hair.
With ivory skin and eyes will be road green.
Eh? What do you guys think good idea or what. Here is the Jolene version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiO3SIOOc_4

I want to mwatch the match again, any link where a good quality video of the whole match has been uploaded? I remember someone posting an excellent link for the Nou Camp game.
I think Evra, Nani and Hargreaves were the ones on the ‘fine yellow line’.
April 30th, 2008 at 15:01
United’s defending was beautiful yesterday. I was very impressed.
April 30th, 2008 at 15:57
finally no one man show/team rubbish we get the respect we deserve.
April 30th, 2008 at 16:43
I think it was a blessing that nobody will miss the final due to yellow or red cards. I’m especially happy for Scholes although I have to admit that three weeks ago I really never wanted him to take part in the final. Obviously a big slice of Ginger Humble Pie has changed my mind on that.
Regarding Hargo. He had a good game but he was guilty of one moment that could have killed us. He was marking Henry when he had his free header in the box that went straight to EVDS. Late in the game and I’m sure by then he was pretty tired but it was a very unHargo moment and took his performance from an 8 to 7 from me. And other than that moment I have to disagree with Varun who felt his performance was scary. Far from it. He did his job exceedingly well and other than that moment with Henry sut the door down completely. Yes Iniesta cut in a few times but Hargo never lost him and never let him do anything with the ball. Also his dribbling and clearing was typical Hargo. Confident on the ball and oh so composed. He just doesn’t panic out there. If we can sign Philip Lahm this summer, then great. However, I think a combo of Brown and Hargo when needed tactically at RB is more than enough quality for that position. Brown will never be the ideal choice for that position but still, look at our defensive record. With either him or Hargo playing RB, we just don’t concede many goals.
Viresh; Messi would look great in a United shirt but that my friend is a fantasy up there with the Lord of the Rings. It’s just ain’t going to happen. He is devoted to Barca for many reason’s all not having to do with football. Secondly, if he were to leave, it would probably be for Italy. But hold on to the dream. I know I do. In the mean time I like to occasionally make him a Man Utd player on my FIFA 08 XBOX game. Him playing out right and Ronaldo on the left with Juan Roman Riquleme and Hargo in the middle and Huntelaar and Rooney up front. And you think you have wild fantasy’s?
April 30th, 2008 at 16:49
Injury updates
Good news that Evra’s injury won’t rule him out for the season and he could make the West Ham game.
Rooney will be good to go for the West Ham games as well but we will just have to wait and see if he starts. Fergie said “We just cancelled him out [against Barcelona). He was in a lot of pain,”
“He will be a lot better in a few days and involved on Saturday somewhere along the line.”
News about Vidic isn’t good for the West Ham game but he should make an appearence at the least in CL Final if not the Wigan away game. SAF said “Vidic is under the control of the doctor. He got a bit of concussion, so we have to be careful of that. He may have a chance for Saturday.”
We can all watch the Chelsea v Liverpool 2nd leg much more relaxed and hope they pick up some injuries and a few bookings along the way.
April 30th, 2008 at 16:53
On a random note if we do and I will pray to my personel God that we do, win the league and Champions league does anyone think Fergie will walk away now he has won the CPL again?
April 30th, 2008 at 16:57
Stephen - Fergie will walk off into the sunset if he wins and a new sheriff will ride into town…from Sunderland
April 30th, 2008 at 17:15
Not a chance. Fergie loves managing this team too much. It keeps him young and alive. Besides, he has invested too much time and care in some of our young players like Nani and Anderson to leave their nurturing to somebody else. I expect him to make it 25 years at the helm before he considers calling it a day. So I could see him stick around for 2 or 3 more years for sure. The big question will be whether Queiroz will stay and wait for his chance to take over?
April 30th, 2008 at 17:20
I would really hope that SAF stays on and he has said that the younger players he is bringing in are giving him new challenges. We saw against Barca after the match he’s still got the passion that he had when he started. As for Roy Keane I think he wants to establish himself at Sunderland and build the club up and we would need someone with more experience for the top job.
April 30th, 2008 at 17:43
It really is a tangent to talk about the possibility of SAF leaving, but if he did my top pick for his replacement would be Mark Hughes. He has gained extensive experience managing Wales and Blackburn, and has overachieved with both clubs. He is United to the core, which is essential in my mind, and has proven able to bring out the best in slightly below-par players (many of his Welsh charges), bring through talented young players (David Bentley, for example) and make big egos part of a successful unit (Benni McCarthy and Santa Cruz).
Plus he’s British, which may sound prejudiced but is also essential to me. I never want us to become like certain other big clubs and barely have a Brit (stroke Irishman) on the pitch.
I feel a couple of articles coming on on this topic…………….
April 30th, 2008 at 18:14
Penguin, I agree with most of what you said about Sparky. However, he lacks (top class) European managerial experience in my opinion. IIRC Blackburn lost to some crappy team in the UEFA Cup second round this year didn’t they? I think he could do with a few more years at Ewood Park or wherever, gaining European experience, before he steps into the Old Trafford hotseat.
April 30th, 2008 at 18:19
PS. I don’t think Bently came through the Blackburn academy; he was an Arsenal reject.
April 30th, 2008 at 18:44
Nino - I see your point, but it’s difficult to get Champion’s League experience without being at a big club. In this regard, perhaps O’Neill is a better choice, having had a lot of European experience with Celtic.
I wasn’t saying Bentley was a Blackburn youth system product - you’re absolutely right, he was an Arsenal cast-off. But he was a waster with silly hair and lots of talent when he arrived - Sparky has allowed him to mature and instilled discipline and the right sort of confidence into him. And that’s good work.
Incidentally, I think it will be 3 years before Fergie goes - and Hughes will be ripe for it then.
April 30th, 2008 at 18:47
Somone said earlier about Nani needing more time to make he right choices, which I think is spot on. Remember how selfish Ronaldo was when he first played for us? And Nani’s not nearly that bad (although he’s not as good as Ronaldo was, either), but he seems far more willing to do his share defensively, and has chipped in with a few stunners this season. Given time, training and the right atmosphere I think he can become a world-beater.
Tonight, I’ mnot sure why but Liverpool will win. I wouldn’t be surpirsed if Riise scores, either.
April 30th, 2008 at 19:03
it would be fitting to bit the dippers at their own game this season, im hoping for a scouse win.
April 30th, 2008 at 19:48
Manchester United ownership isn’t about tradition or sentiment. When the time comes guys like Hughes or Keane won’t get their chance to manage at OT. Queiroz has a great chance or it will be a big name like a Mourinho, whether we like it or not. Champions League experience, a successful resume and a pedigree is essential.
April 30th, 2008 at 20:39
Chelsea 1-0 Pool (HT)
I want Pool to equalize and want this to go all the way into extra time. Basically tire the shit out of both teams. That way Newcastle could nick a draw at St James’ Park — and the barcodes are playing decent lately. That is my hope.

Its interesting 2 note that,Chelsea and pretty much every other fan of football believe that Avram Grant is a useless coach or manager. This is obviously illogical and evidently based on an even more ridiculous rationale.”He looks like a toad.”.Ok very funny but I’ve grown 2 respect him over the past two months and I think we should do the same.He stands in the way of a glorious season and the most painful season we’ve ever had in half a century. He has turned Chelsea’s seemingly nightmare season into a dramatic miracle. We should never underestimate him at all
April 30th, 2008 at 23:25
It does on the RepOfMancunia site.
Posted it there cause I didnt get any replies here. How do you think it is?
April 30th, 2008 at 23:27
Chelsea will be way tougher than Liverpool. Forget the manager, Chelsea still have one of the strongest first teams in the world, and Drogba is hitting top form just at the right time and Ballack is finally starting to show his worth. They are also very good defensively so will be difficult to break down.
They may have beaten us at the bridge, but we had important players missing and they had home advantage. On neutral ground with a fully fit team we should beat them!
April 30th, 2008 at 23:42
My heart is still beating in overdrive. But it’s getting all pumped up again for the West Ham match saturday!. I hope if the play Rooney, that he really is fit, because he could miss the final in Moscow if he exacerbates the hip injury. He will be confident now though, because he managed to beat Cech one on one. I bet some of the fans are still there in their seats waiting for Saturday, all gee’d up and ready to roll. We got to win the next two games convincingly, especially after Ballack insists our lads will bottle it. Bet if L’pool had scored the vital goal BEFORE CHELSEA, they would have shut up shop, just like our defenders did last night. So stop squealing about us being all negative you who ran out of luck scousers.

It will be tough but hopefully we will be rested and at full strength. Remember, this is despite Abramovich’s background, will be neutral ground. It will be a slow game that will bore us all to sleep until the first goal. United will win 1-0. Chelsea can score 3 goals against a makeshift back four for Liverpool but they won’t be getting chances like that against our boys. The only guy who can beat us, actually beat us last week. Ballack lurking outside the box and coming in for headers is a concern, as well as the referee. I would love for it to be the German ref from yesterday. He is an excellent ref. Our CB’s can neutralize the Drogba and Lampard as always will disappear in a big cup game like he does for England. Bring the fuckers on. I want sweet revenge big time. I’m almost glad now we lost at the Bridge. We have tons of added motivation and the siege we put on them with all our injuries late in the game will have their knees shaking at the thought. What a matchup for a European Cup Final. WOW!

Jay wire; It does not take much to be the manager of Chelsea because they have a billion pound payroll. They have so many world class players. Players of that class may not always look outstanding but they are all very technically good at protecting the ball and not doing things to embarrass themselves. When you have skill on the ball and you protect the ball well, you can win and succeed despite yourself. Grant is muppet but like many before him that took over a talented squad in turmoil, he manged to settle them down and get their minds on the task at hand. The players did the rest because Grant is an idiot tactically and in the management of lineups. I say underestimate him a lot. Just never underestimate the talent and heart of players like Ballack, Carvalho, Cech, Terry, Lampard, Joe Cole and even the much maligned but always clutch Drogba.
This victory is due to the heart and resolve of the Chelsea players and to the money it took to build this dysfunctional weapon of mass destruction. I can see Abramovich paying off his players to throw the match right now because I doubt he wants another season of crappy looking football under AV Grant. Roman is an artist. He’ll burn every painting that sells because it looks ugly and keep the one that looks beautiful to the eye. He’s not about winning. He’s about winning and trying to look like Brazil 1970. He needs to wake up and smell the roses. Even Fergie has had United play ugly football at times when it was needed.

I don’t know how we can say that, because Grant is Roman’s puppet. If he wins it, it will be the vindication of Roman more than anyone else because it was him who installed Grant as manager. So Roman can show a big middle finger to the world to fans and say, “I was right!”, however undeserved it may be, amidst heavy opposition.

I saw a photo of Ronaldo’s new gf who is now wearing an earrings in the shape of the letters R7. Seems he has given up his hooker habit. Worryingly she is Spanish, so I hope she does not nag him into leaving for Spain, because if we did win the double I think Ronaldo might be tempted to leave again.
May 1st, 2008 at 1:01
Is anyone else worried about the fact that Chelsea will have home field advantage. Roman will be able to bribe whoever he wants out there. Officials will probably be payed a visit from his henchmen.
May 1st, 2008 at 2:44
RR Grant may be his puppet but then again, he thought there would be an instant tunr around in the style of play. Remember, he is obsessed with attractive football. Grant is no better than Mourinho, in fact he is worse. The difference is he got them to the CL final. Roman knows if he wins the final he has less reason to go get the guy he wants to manage this club. He really wants Guus Hiddink or Rijkaard I feel. Especially after Rijkaard’s remarks about English clubs not playing attractive football. Don’t you think that was an obvious waving of the flag in Roman’s direction to “come get me”? No way does he want the fans to all of a sudden fall in love with the tactically inept Grant. Roman treats Chelsea like his toy and he wants his toy to perform the way he wants it to perform, regardless of winning.

.VDS
.RIO
.VIDIC

.EVRA
.RONALDO
.HARGREAVES
.ANDERSON
.NANI
.ROONEY
.TEVEZ
Big game lads…….just dont wanna even imagine how bad defeat would feel!! Reall hate those mafioso scum.

The future replacement for Paul Scholes may be on the way. I’m hearing strong rumors from a number of sources that United are close to signing 23 year old Brazilian attacking midfielder Thiago Neves. I have seen a few games with him playing that role for Fluminense and I have to say he is really a great young player. He has a lethal left foot from long range and he is also very calm and composed when he attacks the box. A lot of vision and finesse. I’m sure if we get him there will be a learning curve and an adaption period before he really shows his stuff but he may be just what we need in the middle. He scored 12 goals in around 30 games last season and had numerous assists. With Anderson and the twins already in place, it’s clear that Fergie wants a Brazil/Portugal future national team hybrid playing at OT for the next ten seasons. It sure would solidify Portuguese speaking Queiroz’s hold on the Gaffer’s job once he retires, one would think.

I know its contraversial. He will play…im sure of that. I just feel that unless he plays in a midfield 3 with hargreaves and anderson Chelseas midfield will just out muscle us. As good as he was last night scholes game has chaged. Hes not really an attacking force anymore.
If we play with carrick n scholes i fear for our chances. We need someone driving us forward from midfield. Will help create more spaces etc.
Dunno much bout this Neves fella…….all i know is that there is a boy Renato Aungusto over in Brazil who looks a real intresting prospect.

how an unknown brazilian can be called scholes replacement? the guy has never played in any european league!
Also being Man Utd, we keep being linked with any and everybody! If a Scholesy replacement has to come I’d much prefer somebody already playing (and proven) in Europe (Diego, VDV, Modric (pity he has already joined Spurs) etc
May 1st, 2008 at 10:03
I wept, I confess. I wept when Scholes scored. It has been too long without those rockets. Nostalgic stuff…
And I will never forget that celebration. If I ever saw any face light up with pure joy, that was it.
Talk about childhood heroes…

Bugger, had to root for Liverpool last night, so feeling a bit dirty - but they’re clearly a weaker team, so our chances would have been better. I fear Chelsea to be honest, they’re coming together at just the right time, and keep in mind they still do have the best first XI on Earth. I guess it’s kind of fitting that they would get the chance to win it all in the country where all of the millions were ‘earned’. Also props to Lampard, hate him as you will for his ineptitude in an England jersey, but that was a very, very big move last night. He deserves all the respect in the world for that.
We absolutely, no bones about it need to win, and win convincingly against West Ham on Saturday. If we get another 4-0 (earlier in the season was our favourite scoreline) it sends a message that we’re not going to slip up. Obviously if we do slip up, or just scrape by it gives Chavski hope, and they have LOADS of that at the moment. We’re nervous, they’re confident…all a bit worrying!
As for a Scholes replacement, in my mind we have one of the best in the world already, but he’s stuck playing centre forward until we get a real one. Watching Drogba and Torres last night, I definitely had some forward-envy
I think this seasons ‘interchangeable 4′ up top was just a reaction to the personnel available. The real answer is still to have a ‘forward’ and then have 3 players behind them interchanging. My money’s on Huntelaar. Any updates on Manucho?

I have to say that the way Lampard celebrated last night moved me. I hate him as much as Gerrard, but yesterday nearly made me cry. He lost his mother, takes a penalty when he must be filled with confusing emotions, and then kisses him armband andnearly cries. I feel sorry for the lad. He is a good player, hate him though, and what Ive heard he is a good person and to lose a person that is so close to you must be really tough. I wont care anymore though, we have to beat them in the final. Its a must!
Thats all for now, lets watch United beat the Hammers on saturday and Chelsea drop points against the Geordies. Fact: Its 5 years since Chelsea won both of their last two league games of the season! Lets hope this continues. COME ON YOU REDS!
Other news, The Sun claims that Rooney is out for the season. Would be a major shock since Fergie said he would be fit for West Ham. He is an important player and means a lot to Uniteds play.
Ronaldo hates the weather in Manchester! What a shock. I thought he loved the sour rain and the real chilly wind. He also says he wants to stay in the club and win many trophies and become a better player.
Scholes will sign a new contract. Looks like the Ginger Prince will stay with us for a while. Great news

I have a question. Why do United play all their CL home games with white socks? I mean, in the league we use black socks. And against Sporting away this season we used black socks, but in the home gamewe used white! Sporting used the exact same kit, but we still changed the socks. Its not so important, but does anybody know why this is?
May 1st, 2008 at 11:26
Yeah saw that thing in the Sun re: Rooney - what’s that about? Not ideal…

Opinion please lads, Are these the best goals or what?

Julio, I think you mean this:
. No idea about the socks issue. And yeah, the Sun talks bollocks.
Are these the best goals or what?
Your link was just to RedRants again, click on it and you will see.
And RedDevil, I think it is a great song, the tune goes along well with it. Good lad
May 1st, 2008 at 16:47
Grognard; you forgot to mention that as he plays for Fluminese we can get him quite easily if we want him that bad, as we have first option on their players. Not sure I would call him Scholes’ successor though, he is a better dribbler and much faster so I think we would be tempted to play him out on the wing, even with his vision and passing ability. Anyway, there will never be another Scholes, never.
May 1st, 2008 at 16:55
[Conor]
Not Scholesy’s predecessor, successor.
May 1st, 2008 at 17:06
Haha yeah, that makes more sense
May 1st, 2008 at 17:32
First off, nobody is saying he will be better than Scholes. But we will need a replacement for him eventually and Anderson is not that player. Anderson will probably be our holding midfielder of the future. Neves can play on the wing but his finesse and fantastic shot is better served in the middle of the park. He’s not a great crosser but he is excellent at through balls.
Jos; Man that is really a close minded statement. How many great South American players do you want me to name that came over on the boat and became great players in Europe without Euro experience. I too would prefer a much more European proven name but they also cost an arm and a leg. They also may not fit in to the club’s long term plans which like I said before, seems to be creating a Brazilian/Portuguese hybrid with Fergie’s eventual successor probably being Queiroz for obvious reasons. Don’t discount the lad. He has a lot of talent and Conor is right, he will come much cheaper. The cost alone makes the gamble well worth it.
May 1st, 2008 at 17:54
[Grognard]
Point taken, but we already have another player in his mould: Rodrigo Possebon. Brazilian, plays in central midfield, maybe a little withdrawn but likes to set his own pace to the game.
Actually type Rodrigo Possebon in google, the second result is Red Rants.
The article we’d written on him is here.
And yes, lots of south americans have flourished in Europe. It’s England where they’ve found things a little tricky. It’s a steeper learning curve in the Isles with the weather, the physicality and all. Yet, in United with a core of Portuguese and Spanish speaking youngsters, a south American might find it easier now than in Kleberson/Veron’s time.
May 2nd, 2008 at 0:32
RR; Yes it is a different time in the BPL than it was when Kleberson and Veron showed up. And lets face it, United’s ethnic player of choice right now speaks Portuguese. Fergie and Queiroz are cooking up a 10 year master plan that will turn United into a Brazilian style team that plays a Cattenacio Italian style but that attacks with lightning counters. 4-2-2-2 or 4-2-3-1 is the future and I see our midfield and wide players having that Latin American pace and flair for years to come. I still think we will maintain a little UK influence and a blend of players but Fergie wants his team to look like Inter or Milan in theme.

I’d be interested to hear views on moving the final to Wembley. It would be greener, cheaper, warmer (?), no problems with visas etc.
