Man Utd 1-0 Boro: One-nil to the United

Tag: Match Reports @ 4:15 pm

It was as I said yesterday. The unforgiving nature of the Christmas schedule lends itself to games that call for a good old fashioned scrap fest. Teams will come to Old Trafford, dig themselves a nice trench, build a wall and sit sipping some classic blend of English tea.

Of course, that doesn’t mask the fact that there are problems in the side — the lack of ability to put the ball in the net being just one of them.

Fergie started with Park, Carrick, Fletcher and Ronaldo across midfield, and Berbatov and Rooney upfront. The back four, predictably, consisted of O’Shea, Evans, Vidic and Rafael.

If I were to write a description of the way we played yesterday, I would be repeating myself several times over. It’s been typical of United this season: dominate possession, string a few passes right till outside the box, and then give the ball back to the opposition / shoot the ball into row z / cross it only for player x to inexplicably scuff it from point blank range.

The first half was a good illustration of the above scenarios. Rooney missed, Berbatov missed, Ronaldo missed, Park missed (but then if there was ever a contest on shooting and missing, Park would come out top — he’s the best misser ever).

The second half was a bit of the same. Although, bringing Scholes on clearly changed the game. Just as demonstrated by our title winning 06/07 season, Scholes and Carrick were good partners. In this season, though, Scholes and Carrick would work if 1) the Ginger Prince has the legs and 2) it’s against ‘lowly opposition’ at home.

Carrick showed a tendency to move forward more than he has in the past, and it was a positive sign in the player’s development. One of those forward runs was to eventually lead to making the goal as Berbatov kungfu kicked it in. The relief was palpable on most faces, as it was on Berbatov’s, showing how much of a worry this is fast becoming for even players to deal with. We are struggling to score, Ronaldo isn’t at his best — not by any standard — and we need to be picking up these wins when we are at our worst. [This is assuming this is as bad as it can get].

But the bigger talking point of the match would always be the incident in the first half. Before saying any thing further let me say this: Pogatetz, you fucking cunt. Get the fuck out of football. You’ve tried to end Possebon’s career, and, yesterday, made the footballing imitation of Homer strangling Bart. Just thank your lucky stars that the referee was somehow not looking. So, please, just fuck off.

Right. *clears throat*. Where was I?

In all seriousness though, here’s the thing: Ronaldo was fully justified in speaking his mind to Pogatetz in the tunnel. The “bust up”, everyone is on about was fully justified. Ronaldo’s had enough crap through this season. Pogatetz, on recent evidence, is clearly not a footballer and his tackling has been a professional hazard for his more skilled peers. I’d be shocked if the FA even contemplates taking action on Ronaldo.

On performances, I thought Park had transcended the realm of ridiculousness and moved to the surreal when it came to his finishing. I couldn’t have seen a better scripted tale on contriving to do the wrong thing over and over again. It must take a lot of skill to accomplish what Park did yesterday, no?

Rooney was a bright light yesterday while Ronaldo had another muted outing. Whether it was due to the ceasless hackjob operation performed on him these days, or the Pogatetz strangle, or his lack of full fitness — the hunger seems to be missing from his body language. Neville has moved from being a liability to being just about adequate. While Rafael showed ambition early on, he did tend to get caught up far too forward. Neville helped give that shape back to the side. And it worked for us, against a team that wasn’t showing too much ambition anyway. [To his credit, he has been decent recently and has shown improvement.]

And finally a word on Jonny Evans, for whom, Rio’s absence is proving to be golden. I like the lad, and he continued to give a good account of himself.

  • Fred the Red, i completely agree with ur comments 31 and 32 and i have been saying that for weeks. At least there is some1 else out there apart from obviously grognard and a few others who actually can see that park and the fletchers of this world are not good enough. We dont settle for good players, i can name u 100 good players, but what you need to be to play for this club is very good/excellent players so being a good player isnt good enough. As you made a good point where you spoke about phil neville and i think also butt. They were only ever squad players for us never 1st team, so how come fletcher and park seem 1st team for us. I actually feel that butt is better or at least as good as fletcher to be honest, and in all honesty i would prefer kieran richardson over park at least he can produce some very good displays from time to time. Nani for instance can have a stinker but then he can have an excellent game like arsenal last year compare that to park who is always ok 6 out of 10 every game, well i prefer nani then cos atleast he can have a storming game every so often. I just sometimes look back at premiership years on sky and think the fergie of 10 years ago wouldnt tolerate these limited ability players, i just cant stand to see them. People blame berba for our poor performances, why not look at fletcher and park too, atleast we all know berba is class and a world class player that is more than you can say about those 2.

  • @Craig Mc: Thanks mate, I try. The problem here, and I am being totally serious is how many of us supporters have been serious jocks (athletes) in their lives? I’m not talking about going out with the lads once every six months and playing a little footy in the playground. I mean serious athletes who competes in school sports and who were obsessed with sports. Up until 1987, I was a real jock. I was a four sport athlete. I played US/Canadian football, basketball, hockey and golf. I also dabbled a bit in baseball. Before I tore my knee up in University playing football, I was considered a good prospect for the Canadian Football League. 6’5″ tall and 260 pounds of muscle made me ideal for football. I was a pretty good golfer too. In all these sports I was big and expected to be physical but it was my strong finesse skills that caught peoples eyes and attention.

In all these sports I played hard but I vividly remember what it felt like physically when a coach demanded you work harder than you were capable of. It would throw your timing off and all the finesse skills and subtle abilities you had were overtaken by speed and brute force. All of a sudden I felt myself escaping from my own body and soul and feeling like somebody else when I couldn’t finesse a pass to another player in hockey or when my jump shot had eluded me in basketball. Only if you have achieved a certain standard or level of ability can one truly understand what altering your style or skill set is like.

Fergie has been a bastard for messing in the past with Rooney and Tevez. Now heis doing it with Berbatov. Nani is never allowed to express himself as only Nani knows how. Sure it may not always be intelligent but if that was what Fergie wanted, then he shouldn’t have bought him. This is why I have always had a strong belief that Anderson would never be the player I was hoping he would be. Not enough finesse and poise in his game and that is not something you can teach. He goes out at full speed all the time and many of the Berba, Riquelme and Ronaldo style finesse skills require doing them at half speed or even static. On the other hand, trying to get Berbatov to finesse a lob pass or or get Ronaldo to skin a player at full speed is asking something of them that is not in them to give. And their offensive skills have been honed to perfection at a sacrifice. That sacrifice has been towards the defensive side of the game. Much like Vidic and Rio can’t finesse a pass or do a successful step over, berbatov should not be forced to track back at full speed and tackle opponents to satisfy the demands of blue collar supporters who cannot or have not played sports at a high level. I am proud to say that I reached a pretty high level and because of that, I know how hard it is to change the player you are, and how hard it is to give more effort and still maintain control of your specific skill set.

The greatest player I have ever seen in my lifetime was Franz Beckenbauer. I watched many games with him directing the German team, Bayern, Hmaburg and I even had the privilege of watching him play live back in the old NASL days for the Cosmos. Beckenbauer was a defender with artistic vision, and the ability to make things happen at half speed and in the most economical manner. He always looked to the untrained eye like he was lazy and ding nothing, then all of a sudden he would spring into the attacks with a calculating run a or a chip volley pass that would rip open a defense for the great Gerd Mueller to score a goal. He made the game look easy and effortless because he didn’t run around at full speed like a chicken with his head cut off. He paced him and found his moments to exert his energy and talent. I wish many out there could have watched him play to better appreciate what I am talking about. Unfortunately with many in the UK, it will go well over the heads because they see a Rooney out there and they think everyone else can be that good at that high a speed and that much energy reserve. Fans need to wake up and realize that even stars have limitations.

  • @Fred The Red:The part about our squad players being able to work into any other team is quite silly, if they could, then why stay at United??? Why not just go and work into any other team then. And on opposition teams being afraid of players, I don’t think Nani, Anderson, Carrick instill any fears into opposition team either, lets get rid of them too, they’re certainly not United quality

@Grognard: Fergie said he’s satisfied with the squad and won’t be adding, so let the wrist- slitting begin cus we probably won;t be adding in January and unless a serious injury happens to one of our players, I don’t see us buying in the summer either.

@JB: I don’t think theres any use arguing, Park like the old guards can do no right in some people’s eyes, and it’d probably take a hat- trick, multiple assists, a last ditch clearance goal clearance off the line all in one game before anyone appreciates them.

  • @Fred The Red: Beautifully said. Some supporters have such blind loyalty that calling a spade a spade is a foreign concept that they just cannot grasp. It’s also known as pigheaded, stubborn and prone to something called tunnel vision. Seeing things through a very narrow perspective.

  • @JB: Again you are placing the blame on Ronaldo and Berbatov alone. Sure they have not been great and both would admit to that but Fergie and the style of play this club has had to put up with is the real culprit. And in Berba’s case I would also cry for lack of service because all strikers need proper service.

  • @Fred The Red: I remember Gordon Hill only as a color commentator. But Craig’s point is simply that the history goes well back into the 50′s of United having skilled and highly offensive minded wide midfielders and wingers. Park just doesn’t qualify and once he eventually leaves this team, he will quickly be forgotten, unlike the names Craig mentioned.

  • @JB: I knew exactly what we would be getting when we bought Berbatov. I am surprised a 68 year old manager who is a legend would have expected a terrier who runs and runs and runs. He knew exactly what he was getting and he seems to be very happy and content because Berbatov has forced Tevez on the bench. No small feat I might add.

Yorke, Cole and Ole were different types of players and so different things were demanded of them. When Berbatov assisted on the game winner earlier in the week and when he scored the game winner this week, were those moments of laziness? No, they were moments of skill and impression that only a gifted player can offer. Somehow that is forgotten and rather than all of us praising Berbatov for saving our collective backsides two games in a row, we would rather support a defensive mind and highly unskilled South Korean wok salesman on a sunday jog in the park. And that is all JS Park does is a run run run. That takes no skill or imagination. It only takes good lungs and a strong cardiovascular conditioning. For that I am envious.

Berba looks disinterested to you due to your own expectations and conditioning, and not his.

  • @Fred The Red: Finding the right balance is the hardest thing for the manager to do. Fergie has been a master at it but I think financial limitations and his ever growing stubbornness and pride has begun to cloud his judgment and player selection this season.

  • @JB: The term is too many Generals and not enough foot soldiers (Grognards know about these things  ). And yes you are right but when you seek out foot soldiers, try not to pick ones that have two left feet and who don’t know how to shoot a rifle or duck when it’s necessary.

  • Grog most of the Old warriors in our team, may have slowed up, but they are still LENGENDARY to the United faithful, so I have no appetite really to be disrespectful. They have been long time loyal servants and great players. Red Nev is and has always been United thru and thru, and would rather die than lose to the scousers whenever he played against them. Scholesy can still thread a great thru ball, and splay the ball pretty accurately all over the place. Giggsy I feel does contribute too little these days to our game, and he gives the ball away for than most. Yet he was undeniably spectacular to us in his power days. Someone on this blog accused me of calling our older players Numptees, I did talk about some of Fergie’s choice players being numptees, but I was not referring to the older players. That accusation I greatly resented being thrown at me, and I told the accuser so. Anyway mate, I think you know where I am coming from. Apart from Giggsy and many of his lacklustre displays, I have not had a go at our legends.

  • @Matthew: Nani may be very inconsistent but I cannot recall a game for the life of me where he cost us a game due to defensive lapses in judgment. His defensive duties are not on a par with Park but that’s OK, because it is not necessary when we have such a good defense but when we are struggling to score goals. Nani’s moments of brilliance are needed more and more at times like these, not Parks defense. Defense for what, defending against a parked bus? Please!

  • @Rd: I know that, I read the news. And that’s the problem now isn’t it. For him to think we do not need an injection of talent to the squad is ludicrous at best. For me this screams of a team with no transfer budget large enough to buy the needed ingredient on the left side of midfield and for the center of midfield.

and indeed they are legends. But they along with Neville need to know when it’s time to hang their boots up for the good of the team and for the future development of the youth. I respect and honor their achievements but like the most beautiful bouquet of lowers, they have an expiry date. Nothing worse than having a vase of dead flowers on your coffee table.
Respect and love can only been given so far. I am not personally connected to these men and I live thousands of miles away. I take things into perspective and with a pinch of salt. They are just footballers who are past their usefulness. Bottom line, they need to go. Sorry mate, I love them too, but hey have to go. United is like a shark, it needs to move in a perpetual fashion and feed constantly to not die.

And if you think that our talented squad players would be in a hurry to leave the biggest club in the world for a lesser team then you ignore the fact that most of them dont leave in a hurry, and when they do, they uaually have a medal or two to show their new team mates.

I have a lot of old sports jerseys that i loved but I gave away last year to charity because frankly, I know longer fit in them. Scholes, Neville and Giggs frankly no longer fit in United’s long term or short term plans. Unfortunately Fergie is overruling me. DAMN!

  • @Grognard: Again I am placing the blame on Ronaldo and Berbatov alone? Does the fact I said Tevez, Rooney, Ronaldo and Berbatov not suggest otherwise :?:

@Grognard: I don’t think either myself or SAF were expecting a terrier. But one moment from earlier this season sticks in my mind where Berbatov collected a ball outside the box, got past a couple of defenders and worked the ball wide. Yet when the cross came in several seconds later Berbatov was still standing in the same position as he was when he passed the ball. It things like that and the failure to react to the loose ball late on against Sunderland that grate. I’m not looking for him to run like a mad man closing down defenders but more movement from him when we are in possession wouldn’t go amiss.

As an aside I’m not blaming him for anything this season. He has been reasonable but nothing more. I don’t think we have adapted ourselves to get the most out of him yet but by the same token Berbatov still has to lift his own performance levels. I get the impression he is still in his big fish, small pond mode that he was at his last two clubs.

@Grognard: I think that is the difference with you and some others. There are many who do feel a personal connection to the old guard and are reticent to send them to the scrap yard.

@Matthew: Richardson?!?! Jesus time really does heal all doesn’t it. Easily one of the biggest scapegoats at the club in his time here

  • @Grognard: I agree with your comments about Nani, his defensive qualities are not bad and he has the ability to put defenders on the back foot coz of his pace and skill, even when hes not performing well, his presence on the pitch gives the opposition one more attacking threat that must be dealt with, which might just allow some of our more established stars a bit more freedom to express themselves.

  • @JB: Jb, I do agree that Park and Fletcher have been good for us with extra defensive duties needed against top teams like Arsenal were, Chelski, L’Fool and Barca etc. Because we were the ones who had (not park the bus as such) but play a much more protective defensive game. So I can’t deny them that mention.

  • @Craig Mc: Thats what Ive been trying to explain these past two days mate, for your team to function well it must carry a threat fom all areas of the pitch, wether the threat is actual or potential is irrelelevant, the fact that it exists means that the opposition cant concentrate on only two or three players, this stretches defenses out at some point and allows some one to influence the game.
Good players can still influence the game without even touching the ball just by being on the pitch.

  • If only life imitated art.

On the lighter side of things for a bit, yesterday I received in the mail a copy of Football Manager 2009. Great game and a great way for hard core footy pundits to get their mojo on and run their teams the way they think they should be run.

So Man Utd is now being managed by some savant genius newbie known as Grognard. This guy is a breath of fresh air compared to that old codger who was planning on dying and being buried in his office. Yes Grognard has brought back life and positive energy to the team and has gotten rid of all the negativity and cowardly elements that hampered the team.

First sign of business was selling Park and firing Phelan. “Enough already” he was heard yelling as he shook hands with the owners and given the keys to his new office. So Park is dealt to Spurs. Neville is then placed on the transfer block for almost nothing and guess what? Nobody wants him. NADDA! Even a PC simulation knows a washout when they see one I guess. So it’s sit and rot on the bench for Nev until somebody gets brave enough to buy him or until Brown, Rafael, Hargo or the water boy get injured. Boy was he unhappy when I stripped him of the captaincy and gave it to the more deserving Rio. He was pissed.

Next I went on a shopping spree with the paltry 12 million Euros I was left with. I don’t play with pounds folks, I live in the new millennium. England needs to get with the rest of Europe and join the party. So Euros it is. Anyway, I bought this guy Tosic out of curiosity and I also bought my choice for young prospect of the future Marko Marin. The purchases were bought almost two months apart but at least I got the job done.

Real Madrid won’t leave me a lone. The fucking bastards have offered 21 million for Carlito and although I could buy Huntelaar a posh mansion, Posh Spice (although she’s not my type) and a garage full of exotic cars for that money, I did not sell him simply because they are Real Madrid. They can rot in hell before I sell them a player. Although, if they are interested in Gary Neville, I’m willing to hear offers. I already made Daniel Levy pay for his Summer bullshit buying saddling him with the South Korean stump farmer

I had to start the season without Hargo and Ronaldo because after all, this game tries to mimic real life events up to the start of a season.
Amazingly, I have tweaked all the settings and tactics for the team and I have inserted Tosic in as a starter over Giggs and Nani has moved to the right side where he is playing well enough to make Craig wet himself. If you were wondering where all his nice shots and crosses went, they are here with me Bro. And surprisingly Tosic has not been a tosser. He has been a real revelation. I have him taking crosses over Nani and Giggs and he even takes the odd free kick from which he has scored once. Not bad. Maybe Fergie should pay him more than what they currently pay their janitorial staff.

I still start Scholes against my radical new wave way of doing things. Frankly speaking, I hate when Scholes back passes a lot in real life but he is a fantastically tidy player and master at distribution. Carrick is as slow as ever but his passing is sublime and his shooting is being taken more advantage of because unlike this old Scotsman who previously ran things, I move him forward and give him more artistic license to play with.

Berba has done very well playing in the hole and allowing Rooney to run around and collect things. Berba scored a cracker to steal the game at Stamford Bridge after we fell behind to the Drogba with 30 minutes to go. Carrick struck a 20 yard rocket and then Berba turned on a dime to deprive the Gene Hackman glory and give Chelsea there first loss at the Bridge since before the Special One. How sweet it was..

So now we are 3-0-0 and it’s off to the Villarreal for a taste of Spanish hospitality. We have beaten Pompy 3-0 in the Shield and taken care of Zenit 2-0 in the Euro Super Cup. And now Hargo and Ronaldo are back and sitting the bench until they are fit enough to start. Today the Yellow Submarine, tomorrow the world. All because of the offensive vision, new wave tactics and player selections of the man named Grognard. A graduate of the Juergen Klinsmann school of Coaching without your papers. Isn’t fantasy sublime? In the fantasy world I am a positive innovator and not a negative grump.

  • @JB: Scrap yard is a bit harsh mate. I’d only send them to the retirement home. Their time is up (although Scholes may still have some juice in the tank). Silly sentimentality and loyalty is not going to keep the team strong and hungry for years to come. It’s out with the old generation and in with the new. There is no malice and disrespect in my feelings whatsoever. Players get old and get washed up. All the greats have retired at some point. Hanging on well past your best is sort of sad and it taints us of the more positive memories we have of these players. Right now all I can remember of Giggs is his static play and poor passing, when what I should be focusing on is a incredible run through the Arsenal team to put us into the 1999 FA Cup final. Giggs specifically has been one of my all time favorite players. My all time favorite player was Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. In 1986 I watched enough games of his to say enough, retire. He was past it and he needed to acknowledge that himself. This was my hero growing up I absolutely loved watching him play. But like I said before, there comes a time when logic and common sense has to override sentimentality and loyalty. After all, my greatest loyalty is to Manchester United and to a lesser degree, it’s ghosts.

  • Hey guys, I gotta get off to bed. Happy New Year you lot. I will be out partying tomorrow, so you all will be celbrating too, and getting bladdered no doubt  . I wish you all the best for the best of New Years, and to Our Beloved Man United – lets go United, it’s time.

    Night you all.
