Man Utd v Chelsea: Community Shield Preview

Tag: Game PreviewRed Ranter @ 7:40

The summer has whizzed past us, like it always does. Today we have the glorified friendly, the Community Shield. In my mind I haven’t looked at it beyond what it is; a friendly and perhaps an opportunity for fans to grasp at the slim straw of bragging rights going into the season.

Most of you, I’m sure, would recall the shit-hurling contest last year; a nil-nil draw leading to a penalty-shootout and everyone, save for Tevez, were sauntering along trying to feign excitement at the winning goal. Those images are still firmly etched in my mind — don’t ask me why, even I don’t know the answer to that. But it says a lot about how this friendly is viewed by the players. I think.

Ferguson will look to test waters with possibly our first XI — at least for the first half — before he pulls out a couple in view of the most ridiculously timed international friendly in the whole wide universe and of all time. Maybe even before time.

With Brown still recovering from a knock, and Vidic out for a while, it’s possible that Richie de Laet will make another appearance at right back. Rio and Evans will continue in the middle and Evra should take up his customary left back slot. In midfield, I believe Fletcher and Carrick will start, with Valencia on the right and Nani (hopefully) on the left. Up front, we’ll have Rooney and Owen. Thankfully Owen isn’t in Fabio Capello’s England squad for this Holland friendly which is — did I mention? — the most ridiculously timed international friendly in the whole wide universe and of all time.

Chelsea under Ancelotti would be interesting. I was impressed by their performances in pre-season on their US tour. But beyond that, I can’t really say much.

Predictions: I don’t care. I expect a good fluid performance from the side. That is all.

I still can’t get my head around the FA arranging a fooking international friendy just as the new season begins? Is the game being played at Wembley because if so it just the FA trying to re-coup the cost of building the place at the cost of the premiership clubs. If they keep this sh*t up they are gonna find themselves in a whole new club vs country row which is not a good situation for either side.
Onto today, I feel we’ll get a good idea how both us and chelsea are setting up for the new season. Both teams will be playing at 50% – 70% so we won’t get the full picture. I feel it could be a repeat of last year going to penalties again which if i’m honest we seriously do not want. Not because it’s penalties but because of the extra playing time. Add that to the forthcoming International and players are going to burn up quicker than a moltov cocktail.
Here’s to a decent game today and fooking great season!!
    Come on you REDS!!!

I except a tight game, but I hope, I HOPE, Chelsea get shocked over the kind of football United are going to play. Its gonna be fluid, its gonna be fast and its gonna be unpredictable! Even though its only a friendly, the mind of a football player is to always, even if its training. If Chelski lose, we will have the upper hand mentality wise going into the Championship race. If they win, they will be more confident and have more belief in their ability come our next game.

    Team predicition:

    Foster
    Oshea Rio Vidic Evra
Valencia Fletcher Giggs Park(pliz, pliz, pliz play Nani!)
    Rooney Berbatov

    COME ON YOU REDS!!!

Worrying fact! In Uniteds 5 games at the new Wembley, all of those have been draws when played 90 minutes. We have lost one in extra time and one on penalties, and we have won three penalty shootouts. Hopeing for an actual win after 90 minutes, would feel better than winning on penalties…

    News of the World:

Chelsea on the verge of signing Pato for £45 million (but loaning him back to Milan for a year).

Hargreaves out for at least six months and career possibly going to end

If it is true, it is really bad news. Chelsea are going to get one of the hottest talents in the world. And our midfield remains weak and lacking in quality.

As for the game today, we will get a draw at best. Chelsea have a settled squad unchanged from last season. Our midfield has been woeful in the preseason and a good midfield like Chelsea’s will bulldoze us.

Hopefully it will be a wake up call and Ferguson will rush out and buy a midfielder in time for the new season

@colver: Now SAF knows that Hargo is not coming back THIS SEASON, and lets face it, that is what it will be, he should go out and buy the very best midfield enforcer, and I don’t care how much it costs. Even if Hargo ever does come back, which I very much doubt he will, we still need MORE QUALITY in our MF. Every fuck and his dog, bar Sir Alex knows that   .

Can’t help not sharing in optimism, but I suspect another dull United-Chelsea performance. I Also expect the starting line-up to frustrate the hell out of me. Sad however as I suspect, friendly or not, this would be our most realistic chance for silver-ware this season. I’m hoping I’m wrong, and would gladly apologise to everyone for my early season gloom if I am, but I am not very optimistic about our chances (or team for that matter) this coming season. We have a great squad, but I feel the rotation policy/combinations will frustrate the hell out of us. So, hoping I’m wrong, I predict another 0-0 draw. Let’s just hope Chelsea don’t teach us another footballing lesson because I doubt we learnt from last season’s one from Barca.
    My prediction 0-0.
    Scorers:
    Rooney 1 (customary disallowed goal)
Anderson 1 (from open play…then I wake up)
Lampard 1 (“did it cross the line, or did it not”)

Craig’s rating of the Man United midfield    .

Fletch – has one really good game IN EVERY three! Does not have REAL pace. Cannot dribble, and does not have excellent ball control. Does have good passing, and his tackling HAS IMPROVED muchly.

Carrick – those gangly legs of his always get in the way, and needs FAR TOO much time to control the ball, gets it stuck between his feet. Seems to do everything in SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW motion. His tackling is average. Has a shot on him, but needs too much time to get balanced, and so blazes his shots off target too often. When he does get it right though, his shots are unstoppable. He is a great passer of the ball.

Give the ball away Giggsy – what more can I say? He loses or concedes possession far too often for my liking. Has good speed, and it is his speed that gets him by players now, and NOT his dribbling ability, which has lost something. Not good out wide anymore either! For all his supposed greatness, doesn’t score enough goals, and doesn’t make enough assists? Errrr just remind me someone – what does he do? .

Scholesy, has the occasional good game, and when on his game, can control the MF like no one else. Given space he can destroy the opposition with long and short passes so accurate that they are like guided missiles. His shooting is woeful mostly these days, and probably due to his balance and skewing of the ball so it goes off target. I don’t think the manufactured new type footballs of today suit Scholesy, and they are nightmares for GK’s.

Gibbo – certainly better in CMF than out on the wing. Not enough games in 1st team yet to really assess his contribution. Has a fantastic SHOT and mostly on target than off I have to say.

Park on his arse – I am not going to say, because you all know what I think. Lets hope he improves this season, and stay on his feet for fuck sake! Has been very useful in some games for us, and is a speedy little GIT at times  .

Anderson, son, son, – too laid back for my liking. Nonchalent little GIT a lot of the time. To me, he seemed to have MORE passion and rabid-ness in his first season for us. Sorry about this Eddi my friend, but I don’t think Andi has a real winning mentality. He smiles too much at the most inappropriate times, like every time he blazes the ball over the crossbar, or gives it away to opponents at most dangerous times.

    Soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
If SAF doesn’t buy some FINESSE and power for our MF, I think I will pull my hair out this season   .

@Craig Mc: I agree with most of your views on our midfield, including Andy(   ).

Fletcher has improved the last year, but he still only seems useful in the “big games”. In games against the likes of West Ham, Hull and Wigan he doesnt do anything that helps us…

Carrick is spot on, agree with everything.

Giggsy, well what the fuck does he do? He gives our team experience, and according to Fletcher he drives out oppositions from their usual position from the centre of midfield. Which actually can be useful.

Scholesy is a class player on his day, but unortunately those days are over. He has been woeful, and like you said his shot has only become worse and worse with each year. Passing, even in pre-season, was like a watching waterballons being thrown all over the place! No accuracy, and you just aim and hope… He is done, stick a fork in him.

Gibson has a monster of a shot. Ive seen Lampard hit some screamers, Ive seen Gerrard hit some screamers, Ive seen Scholes hit some screamers… But Gibson has one of the best shots Ive ever seen. Even when the ball is in fast movement he seem to hit the just right! as great balance, tackles well and has good passing. If given more games, he can become a great midfielder for us.

    Park sucks!

Anderson can be a laid back “git”, and I agree with most of your assemblences. But that he plays without heart, I disagree. He has the spirit, but as a brasillian he has a different way of showing his love. Its not Keano or Smudge style, but its like Giggsy or even Saha at times. I expect a lot form him this season! Ive not been one to bash him a lot, because my mind tells me this will be his make or break season. If he fucks up, I will thoroughly say he is shit! But if he does well, you shall all look at me as you God!

As for a hard tackling midfielder, its a must! De Rossi and Essien look unavailable, so I say: GET ALAN SMITH FOR FUCKS SAKE!!!

  38. Dan says:

I just dont get it, chelsea will play through the middle, they’ll play even more centrally then when mourinho was there now, so naturally, we should be looking to spread the ball wide to our wingers. So why have winger that cross to save his life, over a winger that looks like he could potentially be world class?

I know why, and its something thats been bugging me for a while. A few weeks ago, in an interview, fergie said that we were difficult to beat. This got me thinking, hes not playing to win anymore, hes not making a team that will score 5, 6 goals on bottom of the league sides. Hes wants a team thats difficult to beat. Park is playing so their fullback and winger isnt given a lot of space in the final third, making it difficult for them. Hes starting a team difficult to beat, not really starting a team that wants to win.

    Thats what i think anyway.

I can’t understand how Park gets the nod over Valencia. I don’t buy the “using Valencia’s speed towards the end of the 2nd” argument. He is clearly better and the less time he gets on the pitch the less impact he can make. Park is a decent sub, nothing more.

  63. colver says:

I have to say about Park he has this wonderful knack for getting into great positions. Off the ball I reckon he is one of the best wingers in the league. It is just a shame that when he gets the ball he either loses it, falls over or misses a sitter.

Evra may be sloppy defensively but he is a joy to watch going forward and really combining well with Nani.

It is hypocritical to ask Berbatov to play deeper. He is playing in the right position. We just need either Fletcher or Carrick to get forward a bit more to link midfield and attack.

Chelsea are rolling over but we seem to have this ability to be all over a team for the first half hour then throw the game away. Once we drop the intensity I have a feeling Chelsea could get back into this match. We will rue not getting a second goal.

Good for Nani getting the goal. Hopefully it will give him the confidence to really stake a claim for a first team place.

O’Shea has actually been pretty good. We are playing him because we have little height in defence so he is there for the set pieces.

In a 4-4-2, Berbatov is definitely the weak link. With Nani and Valencia likely on the wings and Rooney upfron, Berba is going to fall short. However skillful he might be he is just too slow for our pace. we need someone faster up front to create problems for the defence. No way Berba is going to cause problems to the defenders.

    ReplyReply
  78. Grognard says:

We have no pace and ball retention capabilities. Park is always on his ass, Foster is a muppet and our inability to mark properly on wide balls is going to be a real sorry mark on our team this year. Please bring on Valencia, Owen and Pig and hopefully Vidic gets well soon.

Chelseas only wide threat is coming from the left. That is why we are playing Park. He can keep Ashley Cole from coming forward and help neutralise the flank. We are murdering Chelsea on the other flank so it is no big deal. Where we are falling short is we are not getting anything through the middle.

As I predicted now that Chelsea have settled down they are getting the better of the play.

@colver: That is why we are playing Park? Are you kidding me? And what has he done about that? Sweet fuck all as at least a half dozen good crosses have come in from that area and how many times have I seen Park cutting in and not even playing wide? Park is not the defensive strength you think he is and that was never more evident than today and in the Champions League final. He is absolutely useless offensively and Valencia could contribute more on one leg and with no eyes. As usual, Fergie has his head up his ass when it comes to team selection. No way to I start Berba over Owen against Chelsea and no way do I start Park or O’Shea over players like Valencia and De Laet.

    To be fair (first 45):
Park played well, except for his finishing. Nani was just the other way round!

Berbatov looked sharp in the first 20, then gradually disappeared.

Foster is clearly having nerves. His footwork is supposed to be one of his forte. Maybe after a few games…

    Midfield looked good.

Defence was imperious. Evra looked back to his best.

    ReplyReply
  97. Grognard says:

Evra had a good half but he is still found wanting as far as back side protection on crosses. He was badly out jumped on one and was out of position on two others. Still, he looks like he is doing more in attack but he needs to convert those efforts with a telling pass or cross.

@Johnsom33: There are 30 keepers in Germany alone that are better than both Pig and especially Foster. Why we aren’t looking for a keeper in Germany is beyond me. Schmeichel may not have been German but he grew up idolizing two of the great German keepers in Maier and Schumacher and he adopted their physical and intimidating style. Do Foster or Pig look like they have anything remotely resembling intimidation and control of the back four? Foster looks completely Wowed by the situation.

Nani showed his dark side-ball watching responsible for us giving away that goal. Very cheap goal to give away.

Grognard, in the Champions League final Park had a terrible game just like every single player on the pitch bar Ronaldo. Rooney was equally poor on the other flank.

Other matches last season he was really good defensively (although Id agree he was overused in matches where we needed offense rather than defense). He had a stormer in the semis. I’ve got no problem with using Park in big games. My big problem is with playing Park in run of the mill Premiership matches when we need goals.

With Berbatov we have a serious problem. Im not sure this new role leading the line is going to work out either because he is not getting enough support from midfield and is too slow to break at pace. At least playing deeper he was getting lots of the ball and creating chances.

While neither goal was directly Foster’s fault, you want a goalkeeper who can pull off stops to keep you in the game. He should have saved that last goal.

We have the same problems as last season: a defence that is prone to sloppiness, and a midfield that gets overrun when it comes up against a good team. Without Ronaldo we cannot get away with these weaknesses. Our defence needs to wake up, Evra needs to remember he is a defender not a winger, and we need to buy a really good midfield enforcer. Even with Ronaldo these weaknesses were going to eventually cost us as the Barca final showed.

Fergie is a legend, but certainly not for his tactics. We are in desperate need of an assistant, a la Querioz, who is tactically astute and can tell Fergie when he is making a dumb choice…(Park over Valencia, continually sticking with Carrick, letting Neville hang around…)

Yeah the game doesn’t fill me with confidence. We had nothing going on in midfield and barely contained them. Our defence looks very error prone and Foster inspires me with zero confidence. We can play high tempo and scare teams but the moment we drop the tempo we look pedestrian. Our strikers get no service at all and are forced to either go wide or drop deep just to get the ball.

If we want to do well this season we need to read Evra and Nani the riot act telling them what there defensive duties are. We need to buy one or preferably two central midfielders. And we need to buy a new keeper as Edwin’s long term replacement because we need someone who can pull off great stops to get out of jail not just do the bare minimum

We played really, really well in the first half. Some of the best football we’ve played years to be honest.

Then came the second half. Foster produced a good save, punching the ball away from drogba. Had players preformed their defensive duties, he wouldnt have conceded.

Then the second goal came, fact is, we should have had a free kick, well before the goal. Evra was down on the ground, nani was being nani and not bothering to track back, meaning it was 3 against 2 at the back. Foster did save the lampard shot, he was unlucky that the goal went in.

Fact is, if that was on the street, ballack would be facing jail time.

Foster later produced a fantastic save to deny drogba, no one bothered to give him credit for it. Says it all in my opinion.

Jeez, some context people. It was still a friendly, up until their second goal anyway. We were absolutely awesome in the first half hour, a very good sign. A bit unlucky with both goals in different ways – the first the ball couldn’t have fallen any kinder for Carvalho, and the second, well it was it was. I’m not a professional referee so I don’t know what they’ve been told to do in those situations, but 100% Chris Foy f*cked it up, simply because he did a different thing in the same situation within 2 minutes of each other.

I don’t blame Lampard for scoring, that’s his job, you play the whistle. You could justifably ask where exactly Carrick and Fletcher were…

What I don’t understand is why we have this habit of coming out all guns blazing and playing the team off the pitch, failing to take the chances that should put us 2-0 up by half-time, then letting the opposing team back into the game and getting overrun. It happened in the 2008 CL final, the liverpool game last season, the chelsea game in the first half of the season, and now this game.

It’s like there is a hands off policy with many when it comes to criticizing the Gaffer but his tactics in this game were wrong and oh so predictable and his tendency to promise one thing to the fans and then be a coward and go back to what makes him comfortable is still predominant. His penalty kick decision making was horrible. Evra would be my last man taking them behind Foster. Just insane. But you also have to ask the question why Rooney, Owen, Valencia and Scholes were not putting there hand up to take this kick? I don’t blame Evra for having the guts to try. He clearly is not up for it, but then neither was Fergie. This was a major deflater for the team and the fans. Losing is bad enough but to lose to Petr fucking Cech in a penalty shootout is unforgivable. Cech is the worst penalty stopper in the game and the two he stopped today were gifted to him. Man where was EVDS when we needed him. Foster showed how under classed he is. Get rid of him now and buy a good keeper before the season is history. Six weeks without EVDS in goal is all we need to finish out of the top 4.

@ Colver – it’s all fitness. Other than like 5 players in the world (I’m looking at you Ji-Sung!), you can’t play at 100% all match. A lot of pro football is about timing your momentum bursts. We came out of the traps well, but were tuckered out early too.

Think it’s more helpful to focus on what we learned:
    1. We’re no worse than Chelsea, and they’re really quite good.
    2. Nani is a good winger. He was miles better than Valencia when he came on. However, he needs to learn to follow his man al lthe way into the box, not just to the edge. Hope he didn’t break his collarbone, which is what it looked like :(
    3. Foster is nervous, but a good technically. I blame Fergie for the nervousness. It’s the same thing as Fergie did with Howard and Caroll. Pick one, stand by him no matter what and let them grow into the role. I don’t care who you pick now, just pick one. Blaming him for either goal is bullsh*t, btw. Only goal-giving goalkeeping error in that match came from Cech.
    4. Carrick was awful. Just terrible, in everything he did. Has he been found out? Does he not work against certain oppoistion formations?
    5. Berbatov has to be the single most dangerous looking attacker in world football that you just know won’t score.
    6. Evra should have calmed the f*ck down. And no one should have let him take the penalty.
    7. We will miss Ronaldo and Tevez. In penalty shoot outs.
    8. We played the best team in England and matched them, without Ronaldo and while playing with Ji Sung Park. Some credit is due.

It wasn’t that bad, apart from the penalty shoot out, which was fucking woeful, but then too many of our players have lost confidence where penalty kicks are concerned. We walloped then in the first half, and missed so many chances YET AGAIN when through on goal. Berba is scared to fucking death of getting into shooting positions and taking any kind of shots on goal. But I will stick my neck out and tell you this, we will finish higher than those Chelsea fuckers in the PL this year. I am certain of that – dead fucking certain!

Ballack is a fucking cheat of the highest order, and the referee Foy coerced him in his dastardly acts. He elbowed and persistently fouled Evra and other United players. Chelsea were NEVER going to lose that penalty shoot out, with Moscow so embedied in their minds. Look at it this way guys, they scored their 2nd goal while 2 United players were lying injured on the ground – Ballack had just got away with feigning injury by going to ground when United had the advantage and FOY stopped play. How Ballack didn’t get his 2nd yellow and therefore a red card sending off is down to the Ref being a cheat as well as Ballack.

I have NEVER known the pro commentators on MUTV to be so incensed with what happened preceding the Chelsea 2nd goal, or that the play was allowed to go on when Ballack had completely fouled Evra. They reckon that the Ref was completely favouring Chelsea, with double standard refereeing, and that United were cheated in a lot of decisions going Chelsea’s way in that game. Why are we surprised eh? I am just surprised that the pros on MUTV are so enraged, because they are usually very laid back and accepting.

Anybody tell me please, if you have the stats, how many United games were LOST when FOY was refereeing, because I will be surprised if it is not a good few!

Come on you reds, you were fucking fantastic in the 1st half, and with a bit more luck, would have been three up before half time. Let all the naysayers go and watch Chel-cheats if you think their behaviour is okay!

@colver: It’s not just that we need a shot stopper as a GK, but a keeper who is positionally strong and who handles balls coming in from in wide. We need a keeper who is a screaming bastard who will get on his teammates for goofing off or or blown duties and we need an intimidator who never allows an opponent position or a free shot. Neuer is the best out there who isn’t tied to his team for life like Buffon and Casillas seem to be. I love Adler too but he is a bit weaker on crosses. Boruc is the screamer and shot stopper that we need but his ability on crosses is iffy sometimes too and Frey seems to have all the qualities as well as Akinfeev. But does Fergie look for any of these guys? NO. Instead he seems to think Foster is the cat’s meow even though he is an inept muppet. Mind boggling   :???: :???:

    What can I say?

He didn’t really look himself today. He produced a kind of performance we’ve been more accutomed to see from the likes of PIG. Clearly it was a psychologcal thing, but can goalkeepers be allowed mental weakness?

Also the goals we conceded were not entirely his fault – poor marking on the first (maybe Nani, but why was Evra covering centrally? Should have been Rio’s job); and second was a refereeing shocker + classless chelski scum as always.

I’ll pass on this one time, as remember, even VDS was shit a a certain point at the start of last season…

Really irritated that we didn’t have a go at Chelsea with Nani AND Valencia. Park should be keeping neither of these off the pitch. Chelsea knew which wing we were going to attack down every time. It was the one Park wasn’t on. This lead to us trying to play through the middle too often (where Chelsea are strongest) or playing ridiculous long balls.

Chelsea are such a dirty team, I hate them even more than Liverpool. Their idea of defending is to knock the people on the ground when they are about to go past you. Ballack did this to evra and carvalho did it to owen, without even getting a yellow card. And regarding ballack; he has minimal talent left , but has compensated it with thuggery of the highest order. The second goal was so injust, but at least it was only a friendly. I can’t express in words how I angry I was when the second goal was allowed. For incidents like these, football needs TV refereeing

Now onto the positives, which I found a lot off.

    1. We played probably the currently strongest team in England and matched them in every way. Fuck penalties, only dumb seletion by Fergie fucked us over there. And had it not been for a Scouse ref, we would have won 2-1. We ultimately matched a fully fit Chelsea side, who looked hungry on revenge from Moscow…

    2. Nani is back! The guy is a brillaint winger when on form, and proved that with embarrasing Ivanovic and scoring a cracker! Full of confidence, and even though he fucked it up a few times(our first conceded goal), I am encouraged by his performance today. Again, Chelski fucked us over by injuring him…

    3. We dominated the game in the first 40 minutes. We could have been 3-0 up, but instead Fergie uses Berba as our striker and lets our deadly Micky Owen sit on the bench watching Berba and Park fuck up with some of the biggest chances you can get in these types of games. Team looked in good rythm, and we created some huge chances.

    4. Fletcher was immense! Again, he impresses in a big game. He was everywhere in the first half, doing everything you can possibly ask from him. Just a brilliant performance! He fainted in the second half, mostly due to a horrible, absolutely horribel Carrick. Did nothing good of note, and broke up a lot of our counter attacks. Why the fuck he was on the pitch instead of Fletcher when Scholes came on is beyond me!

    5. Just our general team effort, the understanding of our players seem exellent! It was ying-yang stuff and we dazzled Chelski. Fletcher was good, Rooney was creating havoc, Nani showed the spark again and Evans was just immense. And I mean IMMENSE!!! This guy is a legend in the making…

Here we are worrying and feeling upset about Ballack when we should be throwing our wrath at Fergie for a poor tactics and squad selection and terrible pk selections and for the terrible play of the three so called players I mentioned above, not to mention the rest of the muppets who barely showed up and who were outclassed today as I expected them to be. I’m not sold on Foster yet, but I am definitely sick of reading the mick taken out of him over and over again.

As for the selection of penalty takers, I’m convinced that Ferguson purposely chose Evra as a PK taker, or else Evra purposely asked SAF to take one. Ok PKs are not his forte, but he showed courage to take one after what happened and had it gone in, we would have been praising him. But he took a poor PK, that’s for sure.

I suspect that Fabio will start primarily against middle-bottom half teams, and if he is paired with Valencia they will be shitting themselves. If Raphael and Nani can join in and these four can form mutual understandings, things should be very exciting in the wide areas.

And for fucks sake, stop critisising Foster just because he made a few errors!!! It low mate, real low. He is a fucking goalie, and they are no better than their defenders. Evans was massive today, but even he had problems containing a Drogba who looked hungry as fuck! He made good saves from Drogba, Anelka and Foster, and can you please, please, please tell me that Big Peter NEVER made amistake. Champions League final `99, he fucked up with a free kick. Even the great Dane has fucked up many times, your so called “great” Oliver Kahn fucked up lots of times too. Foster has been immense for us the past few seasons, and has looked every bit of United class goalkeeper. He fucked up against Malaysia, and his confidence seemed shattered. Agaisnt that Chinese team he let in two goals because the defence was dribbling on 20 yards. And I remember you critisising him. He is a goalkeeper who now suffers some crisis of confidence. The first goal was not his fucking fault! It was Evra and Nani who didnt do their job. And for the second goal, it was a hard Lampard shot when free on 18 yards. Would Casillias save it? Would Schmeicel save it? No they wouldnt, I bet they wouldnt even got a hand on that, because it was a hard shot by Lampard practically through on goal. Fucks sake man… Besides, his kicking was maybe off. But, I cant exactly say he got the best passes Ive seen in my life. Time and time again he got a shit backpass, and with the pitch at Wembley being so shit, its gonna be difficult to kick it right away. So stop blaming him for everything, cause even though he fucked up a few times today he will still be our goalkeeper for the next few games, and like it or not, for the next few years as well! Fletch was immense today, but Carrick is very pedestrian and struggles against the top sides. Park did a lot of running, but seldom came out with the ball in the MF area. We have to find strength in MF, and I would have preferred Gibbo instead of Scolesy in this kind of game, because of Gibbo’s ability to hit the ball on target from long range, which was needed when confronted by strong Chelsea packed defence.

Anelka and Drogba are beasts when it comes to the high ball…O’Shea will always get the Chelsea game because of his height…Carrick does not look fully fit and is a bit of the pace and playing too slowly…Fletcher..immense..Hargo who? He will become one of the leaders of the team this season…Berbatov, our best player…Valencia had a tough outing but hard to come in with 20 odd minutes and put your stamp on the game. Rooney, needs to play up higher and stop thinking he is a midfielder…just take a leaf out of Owen’s book and play off Berbatov and he will score many many goals…Evra..I love this player…he has not been as good as he has in the past but he is a big reason for our success with his lung bursting runs…don’t forget this…he needs to remember though that he is a defender first and make sure that is taken care…while Ballack is a filthy cheat, Evra should have tried to play on…as a defender he can’t afford to go down like that…Nani, much potential but still defensively positionally naive…needs to cover for Evra as well as track back…I am very hopeful about this season but worried mostly about the goalie situation…I rate PIG higher than FOster even givben his kicking game is worse than Foster’s. I think its a no-brainer that goalies have to be 2-footed and sure of it…I’m not buying excuses of bad backpasses…EVDS would have handled those easy because he is VERY good wit the ball at his feet…if Foster could clean that up and become better at crosses..yes he would be immense..but he needs to learn that on loan at Wigan or Hull..not United

The other thing to note is that Chelsea were experimenting with a new system and were not very comfortable with it. Essien was stuck on right midfield, Lampard was not in the game at all the first half and in general Chelsea looked a bit unbalanced. That probably explains in part why we found it easy first half.

I think unfortunately as our squad stands Chelsea, Barcelona and even Real are quite a bit better than us. Of course we have £60 million sitting in the bank. But rather than use it to bridge the gap between us and our rivals we are just going to be complacent.

Craig, I agree with you…Carrick never shows up in the big games. He is a constant in the mauling by Milan and Barca. Unfortunately he does a good job in the run of the mill games so gets to keep his place. Im sad to say that Fletcher is our best central midfielder!!! If that isn’t a wake up call that we need to strengthen our squad I do not know what is….no disrespect to Fletcher who any squad would be lucky to have

If Nani is out, we have no option other than to play Giggs or Rooney on the wing. Tosic isn’t ready and needs to be blooded in the cups (but even then i think he’ll fall short). Maybe it is worth putting a bid in for David Silva after all!

@Johnsom33: Reason why football players need more time than Basket-players do is because footballers need their whole body to play. Its a very physical game and if you are not fully fit you will not manage to do well. If we were Rochdale or Bury or even fucking Goatie FC we could have played Nani tomorrow, but we are competing for the biggest trophies, and we cannot afford to play an injured player… Its just how it goes.

Carrick is just shite when it comes to these kind of games… Whenever we face Chelsea, Barca, Liverpool or even Bayern we suffer because of his lack of speed, balance and quick thinking. He is good in the games against the bottom teams, but not in the big games. Which is actually the opposite of Fletcher, so my calculation says that those two should never be paired together… Anderson/Giggs and Fletcher in the big games, Carrick and Scholes/Gibson in the games agaisnt lower 10 teams. They both get the space they need to pass, and dont have to do too much defending…

Anderson may be better as a LW, or we could change him and Giggs if it doesnt work out too well. As long as I dont have to see Wazza on the wing I think I will be happy…

The game seemed to have a familiar ring to it. We started well, with lively pushes down each flank, causing all kinds of problems for the Chelsea defense, then tapering off sharply in the 2nd half, allowing their MF to control the game and to deny us any deep penetration through the middle.
Our opportunities dwindled as their oppotunities flourished.
The fact that Carrick was invisible for most of the game was due to him playing too deep, the fact that Rooney and Berbatov were MIA, was because… Carrick was playing too deep. It’s not hard to figure out, but really we just don’t have the CMF’er to bolster this issue!

The cunt in black aside, I felt that Foster should have done better on both goals. He was nervous and edgy the entire game and with the exception of a couple of fine stops he did nothing to boost my confidence in him.

Evra had a good game today, with the one caveat of letting Ballack wind him up too much. He looked great attacking the flank and seemed committed to his defensive tackling (his challenge on the German Cunt, that earned him his yellow, was a joy to watch. I though Ballack was lucky to still have both legs attatched when he got up). For me, him and Fletcher were our best players today.

Tactically, I think SAF fucked up the team selection, and then fucked up the PK lineup (again!!).
To start Park in favor of Valencia was a shocker and with no disrespect to O’Shea, De Laet should definately have got the nod there.
Owen should have come on for Berbatov at halftime so that he would have a chance to get his head in the game and Gibson would have made a better sub than Scholes.

All in all it was not a horror show, but there were certainly some warning signs that we would do well to pay attention to!!

Despite the Chelsea cheating they should have made a meal of us from all the great chances they had from crosses and corners and despite a few good moments from us we looked slow and disorganized and completely out to lunch defensively. Our counter attack was slow and uninspired and basically we looked lethargic out there. The team selection from the start was wrong and the tactics were same old same old. As for the penalty kicks, that was down to Fergie’s stupidity and certain goal scoring leaders on our team that hid tyhemselves when they were needed most. If you and others cannot see that, then nothing else Is ay means shite so I will stop now and go on to other things in my life because one thing this killer move taught me, life is to damned short and too hard to be arguing and fighting over trivial nonsense. Thats the whole point and why Foster’s half hearted attempt was pathetic to those who know the difference between a Schmeichel and the rest. Schmeichel would have taken Drogba’s head off fisting that ball out of play. Of that I have no doubt. Goalkeepers have to command the box and be physical with presence, not timid little ass clowns who play on their back heels and who hope and pray their defenders handle everything in the box. Foster is useless.

@Footy4Eddy: Are you trying to get on my bad side mate? I never stood up for Ballack. I said what he did was terrible but I did say that I had no problem with it because it was done to Evra who I just hate. Sorry but I’m being honest. I like it when players are physical and occasionally dirty like Keano. Remember, I am Canadian and have been brought up with hockey so forgive me if a little of my heritage comes out but I believe in playing the game like men and not a bunch of fucking whining little girls. Too many footballers are total pussies and the rules encourage vaginal excretions. If this was more of a man’s sport it would resemble the game that was played before the 90’s when players were physical and when the game was played by men and not prima donas who dove and acted like cunts. Ballack is German and they learn to play the game with some physicality. No I didn’t like what he did but he did what it takes to win and in my books it’s only cheating if you’ve been caught. Cheating tells me a player cares and wants to win. It’s a cultural thing and North Americans are born with that extra chip on their shoulders and for that I do not and will not apologize.

And if I ever hear you tell me to not criticize a player again, you will get a mouth full mate. Nobody but nobody tells me what I can and cannot say. If you or others can’t handle, ignore it. I speak my mind and I’m honest and sincere with my thoughts and contributions. Stop acting like the Thought Police and get off my fucking back because that is the one thing I cannot stand more than anything on this blog and Red Ranter will varify that. I don’t mind if you disagree with me but do not EVER tell me not to criticize or say anything against a player or manager. That you do not do with me. Show me some respect. Players do not fall into that category. They are fair game for any of us.

As for Foster, I’ll call him a chump when he is a chump, like today and I will praise him when he plays well. I have my views on him and you should respect them even if you don’t agree with them. And making excuses for his poor play is just bloody sad and pathetic. I seriously doubt any of those bad back passes would have caused such problems to EVDS. Foster is Gentle Ben. He’s not cut out to be a top keeper in a hard tough physical league.

i shall elaborate. for one we were in control for the first half and it was us who should of put chelsea to bed with our chances and movement, however they have a really god keeper in chech.

then withouth having to do much chelsea scored a sloopy goals compliments to foster which i will agree was annoying!! then compliments to cheating they scored a fortunate goal, which had nothing to do with our play, UNLUCKY thats all.

then things looked as if chelsea were in complete control but the only reason for that was becuase when they take the lead they soak up play, but in the end our man rooney who u called gutless produce a magnificent goal.

only thing i will criticise is our need for a mf enforv=cer but our boys did well today consider the set backs of the goals

Me, I love playing the game hard. Like I said yesterday, my style of play is based on Alan Smith destroyment of Chelsea in 2005, and that is where you can get the best image of me as a footballer. I dont like divign cunts or pussies that play is soft, but I dont tolerate cheating. Which is what Ballack did, and if I was him I would be ashamed. They didnt play fair, and even if they wanted to win, it doesnt prove anything else to me than that they are some cunts who can only win by playing outside the rulebook. I try to keep a neutral view over the squad on this blog, and when i bash some players its because I either feel they do thigns wrong or are not sued properly. The only players I will let off easier than others are Anderson, Nani, Rooney and Foster. Not because I like Foster, or because I admire him like I admire Wazza, Andy or Nani. Its just that I feel he is being unapreciated, and some people treat him waay to harsh. Sure, menatlity is supposed to be “perfect”, nothing should scare a goalkeeper. But in the end they are only human, and as Homo Sapiens nerves and emotions can get the better of us. Now Foster suffers some crisis of confidence, along with the pressure of having to do well. For a goalkeeper that actually has been injured for the majority of the last two years, playing for the biggest club in the world and trying to become the next England number 1. is very difficult. Sometimes I feel people dont look beyond the “player” and look into the human mind… Yes, Foster can fuck up. But his defence didnt make it easy for him, and right now it looks like even the slightest thing can get the better of him(emotionally). He needs a clean sheet so his confidence can return, and he needs to feel safe and respected by his defenders. Plus, he needs to feel that the manager values him properly. I feel for Foster today, because the way some people are bashing him is unhuman! Thats my view of it…

How the fuck can that be wrong?! You will never be right all the time, you have to live with it. Sometimes people arent like you, or dont share your views. Its happend often, and this time is no different.

As for the Ballack bullshit, we all hate Ballack because he is a cunt! Had Lampard or Mikel done it, we would have dont the same. Not everything is about you you know…

So I will depart.

Also, let it be known that I was not happy with what Ballack did today because he did it against Manchester United. However, you don’t turn on your favorite player just because he has a little Roy Kean in him and the hypocrites who call themselves United fans should not forget the Roy Keane’s of the world who have done plenty of that in the name and on behalf of Manchester United. So forgive me if I say Boo fucking hoo to all those hypocrites who don’t mind it if we dish it out, but can’t take it when it’s served up to us. Ballack is a competitor and a winner and he’ll do whatever it takes to win like a true professional. And that was a professional foul that he got away with, simple as that. Not happy about it but not going to lose sleep over it because in my view, we deserved to lose the game anyway. Aufviedersehen!

What I think of todays game

Firstly- Ben Foster, rubbish…What we need is a keeper that is steady… Collects crosses, punches when required,is comfortable with the ball at his feet and can make saves. Foster is incapable of any. He fucked up almost every one of our backpasses. If Drogba was lucky he would have got the ball and scored. He is as bad as kuzchack with his kicking…atleast PIG gets them to safety!Foster is a joke. The first goal was tricky but he should have punches it away not into danger. THe second was on him no doubt. How do you fail to save a fucking straight shot?? Foster is as Grognard once said ‘100% grade A dog shit’He has done nothing in his career to say he should be number 1. Nothing,PIG played like him today there wud an outrage!I bet Capello was thinking…’World cup squad?England number 1?haha’

Shame for Nani,he was looking good today and I hope he comes back soon. Rooney took his goal really well. HE truly is coming along well and Fabio should be played more, looks exactly like Rafael. If not a bit better. Berbatov too is improving. He should have a good season. We can play football still better than chelsea. They scored two goals that we could have easily avoided.

To end-please Ferguson buy a keeper or even play Oshea in goals before its too late!

    FYI, Foster made some great saves today and reason for horrible kicks is the horrible pitch of Wembley… Nanis fault for not marking Carvalho, Foys fault for being a Scouser. :roll: Foster caught the ball well when required, and as I said made some good stops.     That’s the third controversial decision in a row given against us at Wembley;
    1) League Cup Final vs Spurs -Ronaldo fouled in the box but is booked.
    2) FA Cup Semi inal vs Everton -Jagielka trips and then scythes Welbeck down -stonewall penalty not given
    3) Today, Ballack poleaxes Evra with a forearm smash -stonewall red card, Chelsea score.
It seems David Gill and Fergie don’t have as much influence with the FA as our detractors like to imagine.

As for Foster, the goal Lampard scored is not easy to save at all. We are tlaking about the deadliest midfielder here, one-on-one with a goalkeeper on 18 yards! His shot was hard, but because of Fosters great reflexes he got his hand on it. If not for that, it would have been a piledriver into the bottom corner…

Cech didnt have to kick the ball once, and the time he did he fucked up too! Cech didnt have as much to do as Foster, which puts him in the better light. Carrick became Scholesy 2k with his backpasses today, same with Sheasy and Rio. Everytime Cech was called into action it was in the air…

PIG is not, and will never be a better goalkeeper than Foster! Foster is better than him in reflexes, work in the area, coming out, catching crosses and kicking the ball(which we would all be shouting PIGs head off if he had started  ). He was unlucky with a fucked up turf, nothing more. The day Tom is a better goalie than Ben hell will freeze on earth…

I seriously feel bad for nani right now, the guy really looks like hes come on so much in this pre season i really did predict him to have a really excellent season this year, but now i feel his chance may have gone. Not really through any fault of his own but mainly because of this fergie love in going on with park.
    The general opinion is nani is to be out for 2 months, this is a real shame, i can see the fergie excuse now come the end of the season when nani finally has enough of not playing and goes elsewhere;
Fergie “Its a real shame nani decided to leave, after his injury he just did not get any game time because of the sensational form of park who was just doing so well i couldnt drop him to give nani game time”
Reporter “Erm this sensational form by park, would this be the same sensational form that saw him score 1 goal and get less than 2 assists and generally doing f**k all except being on his ass, that resulted in nani getting no game time?”

Seriously i can see it nani, park gets in the team every week now, doing nothing except being on his ass, we have to put up with a guy who has the attacking talent of a league 1 player, and all the while fergie will be praising him and then come november time when nanis back, sorry park is just playing too well to drop him. Absolute bollocks.
Im sorry but i just cannot stand another season seeing park on his ass all the time contributing nothing again when we have atleast 5 players who would do a better job than him. We overlooked park last season because of ronaldo and park apparently offered balance to the team, well not any more. This season we need goals and goals from the wing will be crucial. Honestly nani was on course for about 10 and maybe the same number of assists, park will come up with about 3 goals and that many assists, im sorry but for a club like us we need winger who can score themselves or set others up.
Such a shame it had to be nani, i dont like wishing injury upon our player but i just wished it had been park over nani, i just dont see fergie showing faith in nani when he recovers from his injury because of his little park love in.
I would start fabio, welbeck, ando, giggs maybe tosic over park anyday, but we know old predictable fergie will go with park, and im sorry 2 months with this guy in the team and the title will be over, we will simply struggle to score goals full stop cos he offers absolutely zilch from an attacking sense. I am feeling so concerned about this nani injury i think we need to enter the transfer market and buy some1, silva or just about anyone, i just cannot stand the thought of seeing park running around being on his ass all the time contributing nothing when we need goals.
Im sorry if any park fans on here think im being harsh on him but all i can say is wait and see, 2 months in the team with him and no ronaldo like last year and we will be in the shits when nanis back, and i would bet on nani being given his place back because fergie will still persist with park, what he sees in this guy only he knows.

@Redrich: Foster definately has the talent, its there for all to see. Against Derby on his debut, many times last season and for Watford he produced the goods. I guess today was just nerves getting the better of him, he seemed to lack the confidence a goalkeeper at the top level needs. If Foster gets some games, some clean sheets, it will add to his confidence and it will bring experience. Thats all he needs right now, plus the support of United fans.

@Footy4Eddy: Well i truly hope those reports are true mate, i really do. I am a massive fan of nani, not as big as craig but he really is one of my favourite players and i think it is fair to say he was cheated like garbage by fergie last season but fair play to him he said he wanted to stay, do well here even though it would have been easy for him to say thanks but bye and go with ronaldo or wherever and leave, i really was impressed by that.
Your right though about park, if he plays as much as he did last season we are well and truly fu**ed. Im wouldnt say i have a vendetta against him or anything but i dont like how a guy who contributes so little to our attack seems imune from criticism because he works hard, its just crazy and honestly i dont see why fergie has this little love in with the guy. Like i say i hope nani will be back and fit within a week or so but i dont see it myself, he did hit the ground pretty hard and if as i think fergie said they couldnt pop his shoulder back into place, it sounds kinda serious and suggests at least a few weeks out.
If that is the case though i would definitely start welbeck, fabio, giggs, even tosic over park because they all have a better attacking input than park, seriously his running around and defensive work is all nice is the big games but why on earth will we need this against park the bus birmingham, i just really dont understand some of fergies decisons at times but i would bet any money park starts on sunday.
Also just interested to know ur opinions on what phelan said after the game when asked about new signings, basically said its near the end of august now but if anything develops the reporter would be the first to know. I dont usually read into these things too much, but if they were definitely not going to sign any1 else wouldnt they have just said so right there, not holding my breath but who knows, especially if nani is out for a few months, maybe a bid for silva could be a possibilty then?
Anyway heres the link if you want to hear phelans speech at the end of the game where at the end he mentions this, the phelan recording is just above fletcher/nani pic about 10 seconds from the end of the recording, again probably bollocks but you never know.

As for Park, I will make it short. Without the ball, he may be in the top ten best players in the world. But when on the ball, he is as useful as a drunk homeless with one leg and an infected toe on the other.

If I remember correctly, didnt Fergie bid for Silva exactly 12 months ago? It was August, and after the Community Shield. But before the Newcastle game. Maybe Fergie is planning to make a bid for Silva, but I wouldnt hold my breath… If United actually managed to get Silva, our team may look like this:

    VDS
    Brown Rio Vidic Evra
    Valencia Fletcher/Carrick Silva Nani
    Rooney Berbatov/Owen

Silva is an exellent player, and can be used on the wing. When Nani is injured or suspended, he can play on the wing. When everyone is fit, he should be used as an AM(he would guarantee at least 15 goals himself!) next to a Carrick in the “normal” games, and next to Fletcher in the big games. Its a much stronger team than the one we have right now…
