Man Utd v Inter: Preview

Tag: Manchester United News @ 6:48 pm

Lot of trash talk has happened over the past few days. Mourinho, as always, deflects attention from his players to himself. Despite his side’s patched up injury situation, nothing can be ruled out of today’s fixture. But on this one occasion, I am convinced I have cause to feel optimistic.

Before we move on, some reading material to while away your time, if you can’t wait for the game to start.

1. Paolo Bandini does his part in warning of Inter’s threat away from home. I’d disagree, but only because of our defensive form.

2. Both managers have put on their optimism hats, and why shouldn’t they. Fergie talked about Inter playing for penalties. Jose played up his ‘specialness’.

3. John Collins and James Richardson kick off the is Jose suitable for the United job debate — not too dissimilar from the one we had on our comment threads.

4. And Kevin McCarra thinks patience will be key against Inter.

5. One other interesting nugget is, the players will be wearing a kit bearing a Club World Cup winners badge. So if we do win tonight, I can think of a chant to rub it into Mourinho.

Right, on to the game. My expected back four will have Evra, Rio, Vidic and O’Shea. Of course, EVDS would be donning the gloves. In midfield, Michael Carrick will surely start alongside A. N. Other. I suspect it would be either one of Anderson or Giggs. On the right we’ll have Ronaldo, but on the left, it will be interesting because Park has been spitting his lungs out for the last couple of games. But knowing Sir Alex’s preference for these European games, he will most likely play the Korean. Berbatov and Rooney would start, but I wonder if he may consider playing Tevez instead of the Bulgarian to just run at Inter’s patched up defence and just terrorize them. We shall see soon.

I’ve got to get back to work, and I’ve remembered to watch this on repeat – although it won’t come close to the live one. So let me sign off with my prediction: 2-0 to United.

  • Can you guys believe that Vidic has gotten himself sent off three times this season?! Twice against Liverpool and in the final vs LDQ. Damn!!!

  • Im not getting my hopes up about Hargreaves. Ive had a chronic tendonitis injury like him and it never really goes away. The moment you start putting stress on your knee again the injury comes back.

Vidic off turned the game. It would have finished 2-1 if he hadn’t been sent off. But the shock of that sending off broke us and Liverpool went for the kill. If our defence hadn’t been so over the place it would not have been a mauling. We might have even emerged with an ill-deserved draw. But so much of our confidence as a team comes from our defence and while it rarely lets us down, when it does the results are catastrophic!

  • Ljajic is 17. He won’t be anywhere near the first team for at least another three years.

I’ve given up on Hargreaves. After all the heartbreak I went through with Saha I’m through with injury prone players no matter how good they are when fully fit. You need joints and bones made of steel to survive in a league like ours.

I don’t know about Berbatov. I think he is very useful against weaker teams where he can get away with being quite static and his ability to unlock defences with sublime passes comes in handy. But against top teams our forte is our movement and our tempo and Berbatov is bad for both those qualities. I’m not sure getting a winger who can cross would help, because Berbatov is not great in the air…good but not great.

It is worth sticking with him because he does have Premiership pedigree and scored a ton of goals with Tottenham. But it is a question of whether adapting our game to suit Berbatov comes at too high a cost and we lose those qualities that make us great.

  • Hargreaves is going to come back a better player. He had the operations on both knees to cure his problem. The little things they were doing each time were to get him through the next bunch of games. These operations will have sorted his problem, leaving him a better player, sure as hell more determined, and in no worry that his knee could go at any moment. He really will be like a new signing, and a very good one at that.

  • @RedDevilEddy: So basically you are telling me a player who has a radar like leg and can find any head or set of feet with a cross or free kick, who can score from 30 yards with a free kick. who likes to visit the box as a midfielder and who is imaginative in his offensive passing and play is not what we need, am I correct? Are you serious mate? As far as I can see he is exactly what we need. Somebody that doesn’t fit in the traditional mode that all the other players are in. Somebody who can get the ball to players in a more traditional manner and who poses a threat from long distance because he has a cannon leg. A player who has more tools than Beckham but has many similar tools as well and a player who is capable of offering a new and not typical dimension to our team. No mate, I’m sorry but it is you who is wrong. You are stuck in the same gear and think fast paced player are the do everything but clearly they are not. There comes a time when you need a player who has a different set of skills. A player who lets the ball do the work for him.

  • @RedDevilEddy: As everybody on this blog knows, I love Hargreaves but even I will not go to limit of saying he is as good or better than Gerrard. You can hate Gerrard all you want but the player is truly outstanding. His offensive skills are incredible and Hargo cannot match them in his wildest dreams. Where Hargo is better is in tracking and marking players. When it comes to passing, striking a ball with power and accuracy, heading, vision, Gerrard is far superior. I’d call them equal in taking free kicks and penalties and in crossing. We can hate Gerrard all we want for being a Scouser but we would have been ecstatic to have a player of his quality running the middle of our midfield. And Hargreaves is not one hell of a long range shooter mate. Take a look at his career history. Gerard has scored more goals in half a season than Hargo has scored in his entire career. Hargo has a decent long range shot and he is definitely great at short and mid range free kicks, but again, to compare with Gerrard who is positively scary at times, is bordering on bias and favoritism.

  • @Grognard: well hargreaves is a CDM and gerrard is a CAM so if hargreaves scored anywhere near the amount gerrard scored gerrard would be one shite fuck!

I dont see what your talking about at all, gerrard is the big fish in the small pond in my opinion, lampard is much better then him and less over-rated.

  • @colver: The only time ill give up on berba is if fergie continues his stupid experiment of playing berba behind rooney.

Im sorry, but if it where the other way around our striker force would be in the top in the world, but fergie just loves doing this! Playing neville at CB, smith in midfield, all these little experiments that never works!

If CQ were here, i guarantee you berba would be our main striker with rooney playing off him.

  • @Grognard: Hey, I have my opinion, you have yours. You watch Swein-something way more than I do/have. All I know is that he is one slow fuck! I may be stuck in my gear, but the future of football is speed. All from defenders to midfielders to strikers! You know how much work us lads in my age group do to improve our speed? Too much I tell you, but that is because being the fastest player will help you out lots of times. The future of football is speed, even Fergie admitted it! Beckham wasnt slow, but he wasnt fast either. If Swein is anything like him, then great! But wingers are supposed to be the fastest players on the pitch. Might as well us Swein as a CM if he doesnt have the speed to compete with the Maicons, Ramos, Lahm, Evra and Alves of this world. Silva, Young, Ribery, Messi, Robbben and Walcott are my cup of tea. Good crossers with a bucketload of skills and fast as fuck!

  • @Grognard: Gerrard is practically a CF this season. Hargreaves is just a defensive midfielder. I would choose Gerrard over Hargreaves most days. But I feel we need a type like Hargreaves now. We dont need a CAM, we have Anderson(laugh all you want, time will tell). Who else can be better to teach Andy about defensive play than Owen? I like to think about the present, but of cource the future is also very vital. Gerrard doesnt fit our play, Hargreaves does. As a defensive midfielder, I would choose Owen over Gerrard. And that is what I meen…

  • @RedDevilEddy: i completly agree 100% slow wingers are a thing of the past, now the best wingers are the wingers that combine their pace and skill, like ronaldo, young walcot. even in the CM positions the faster the better, thats why players like kaka, snidjer, essien, adem are all the best.

Hehe putting adem in that list is cheeky, but he is the type of midfielder im talking about, the ones that can run at you with pure pace, and close control, not of these fancy step overs and flicks.

  • @Dan: Have you even seen Ljajic play? Cause I havent… :???:

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @Dan: That’s just rivalry, hatred and bias talking. Gerrard is fucking awesome and Eddy was talking about Hargreaves like he was some kind of offensive force. I needed to correct him on that much like I need to correct you on your opinion of a player who is so awesome and clutch at times, it’s truly scary. I don’t include his performances for England in that. And he is a much better player overall than Lampard. I’d like to see Lamps make those long probing 50 yard balls that Gerrard and Scholes make effortlessly or see Lampard hit a low rocket
from 35 yards with drive, force and incredible accuracy and at crucial times of a game the way Gerrard does consistently.

I admit it, I admire Steven Gerrard and have often dreamed of the impossible, him playing for United. He is everything we have lacked in the midfield since Roy Keane retired and Paul Scholes got old and slow. Any man with eyes and the ability to judge beyond his own prejudice could see how great he is. Lampard is also a great player. I hate him a lot more but I admire his nose for the ball and his ability to score. He is not the play maker that Gerrard is and is nowhere near the leader that Gerrard is but he too is clutch. So take that to the bank and smoke it mate.

  • @RedDevilEddy: Stop including your own football mate and the way you guys work. That’s irrelevant to the topic. The topic is can Scheweinsteiger play for United? The question is yes. Why? Because if a slower footed Beckham can, then Schweiny can. Because United is not the fast team they used to be. They are slower, more continental and Italian in their approach and buildup. Also, Schweiny is the exact opposite of Ronaldo on the opposite wing and he offers the exact opposite in dimension and options. In other words, he gives us more choices and ways to open up a team. We can let Ronaldo do his thing or we can Have Schweiny delivera long bending ball into the path of a player to get or tap in. He also can hit a ball from 30 yards with power, bend and accuracy. Watch the World Cup Semi Final against Portugal where he scored with long range cannons and destroyed Ronaldo’s dream for a medal.

This is about adding diversity to the attack, not a carbon copy clone of Ronaldo or you fast overrated and usually useless fast winger theory. I want a payer of quality who actually delivers a quality ball or when he has a crack at goal, takes it and buries it. I want some good old fashioned German craft and graft and a different option on the field.

Schweiny isn’t perfect, he is slow and some games he just disappears but when he is on and when he plays on the left side, his crosses into the box are magnificent and when he cuts in from the left side and unleashes hell with his shots, he can be devastating. It would help if you watched him enough. Download that WC semi and his game 10 days ago against Hannover at MAXXED FOOTBALL.COM and then you may actually get an idea of what i’m talking about. Have faith in the Grognard.

  • @RedDevilEddy: The problem mate is you were talking about Hargreaves like a he was this great offensive force with a great long distance shot. He isn’t. And as far as Anderson is concerned, HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HEE! HEE! HEE! HEE! HEE! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HEE! HEE! HEE! HEE! HEE! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HEE! HEE! HEE! HEE! HEE!  Frankly mate, he is worth laughing at because the more I see him the more I realize he is shote and not United calss. Now you know I love ya Eddy and I don’t want to piss you off but my patience with Anderson has finally reached the summit. I can’t take no more. United is a development school for promising players. It’s the best team in the world trying to stay the best team in the world. Affording tiome to players who need lots, and I mean lots of time to develop should not be our mantra. Loan him out and let him develop on some Spanish or Italian side but please get him out of my site for now because he has become a joke. Again I apologize because I know he is your favorite but perhaps you should aspire to selecting greater players or a player to emulate, admire and idolize.

Anderson has incredible passion and desire and has a good long range ability to pass, and dribble while protecting the ball. His weaknesses however, are too numerous to mention and far to frustrating. Honestly I have had it with him and with Fletcher and with Scholes. All good players and in Scholes case a former great player but very inconsistent now and only occasionally great. An up and comer like Carrick needs a truly world class midfielder to start next to him. There is not time for kids who aren’t cutting it. You laugh at Schweinsteiger yet Schweiny is a great player and sought after by many teams, especially in Italy. He also has delivered the goods on many occasions for club and country. Oh ya, and here’s the thing, HE SCORES GOALS. Sorry for picking on you buddy but you walked in to that one. What I say is much like Rafa, ITS A FACT.

  • @Grognard: Grog, do you think Andy WORKS on improving his game? Reason I ask, is because his passing game hasn’t really improved much. Also how the fuck any professional footballer in 2 seasons almost, cannot manage to get DECENT shots on target, and even worse is renowned for his spectacular misses (sorry Eddy), just makes the mind boggle. Even Fergie and his assistants can be seen hysterically laughing at the sensational Anderson misses on goal  . I know the lad is only just coming back from injury, after a while out, but I cannot believe he works on his game, or is even bothered. I would be embarrassed to make the misses he makes and so often  .

  • @Grognard: Thing is though Grog, Lampard scores more goals than Gerrard, and I would rather have Lampard in my team than Gerrard. The one I would really love though is ESSIEN. How we let him get away to Chelski, biggest mistake EVER.

  • @Grognard: Grog if Gerrard is CLOSELY marked, and denied space, he is not so good at all mate. He is pretty average. Torres has made the vital difference to the Lfool team. Why do you think Lfool have NEVER won the PL? They have had Gerrard all those years – think about it. I obviously don’t rate Gerrard as highly as you do Bro. Also If we don’t win the PL this year, hitting our wobbly spot etc, I think it will be Chelsea who do win it, and not those shites on the Mersey.

  • @colver: Colver Ronaldo is bloody brilliant at getting onto the end of very good and accurate crosses into the box, so we do need winger accuracy. Evra is pissing me off when he keeps foraging forward with no end product into the box – sorry. What’s more, he leaves us exposed when he does this shit, because he does it too often, and cannot scramble back in time to mark opposing wingers. I have grown weary watching this mate.

  • Oh and Colver, Red Nev was bloody brilliant in his timing of his forages forward, and his crosses in far superior to others we have had in RB position. Becks and Nev were a revelation at right timing and working together. But hey, that history  .

  • Fergie’s biggest fucking mistake, and he hasn’t SEEN it for this whole season so far, IS sticking Ronaldo out on either wing, rather than the lad having the roaming freedom of the pitch he had last season. Opposition didn’t take long to clock on to it, and they shove 2 players on Ronnie, and kick and frustrate him for most of the game. Whether people like to admit it or not, Ronnie is our most effective player in the area. More effective than Rooney, Berba and Tevez. BUt NO Fergie still sticks him out on the wing, marked heavily, and where he gets VERY FEW crosses ( and even fewer accurate ones) into the box. Ronnie is wasted and out of so many games since Berba had to be accomodated. WTF did Fergie change the system, and morph us into Chelski, with more 1-0 wins than anything else this season it seems. Fergie lost us that game yesterday too, because he by his own admission doesn’t put substitutions on for tactical purposes, but to give each player playing time. We needed our subs on earlier yesterday, and definately the MF sorting because Lfool were over running us in MF. But he leaves it late, and then brings on 3 subs at once. We had Johnny Evans on the bench, and he could have subbed Vida. Didn’t he need playing time. But NO back to the old boys club. We may have still lost the game with Evans on, but I’d lay my mortgage on it, that we wouldn’t have been bloody humiliated. I do not applaud Fergie on this one – no way – sorry!.

  • Grognard, how can you correct someones opinion? To correct it means you are stating fact which you are, you to are stating opinion.

Gerrard is over-rated poo, he needs space to play, without that he is nothing, thats why a primed out scholes will always be better then gerrard, scholes made his own space something that jail bird doesnt.

Lampard scores far more goals then stevie me does, and is much, much better team player with technical ability. Gerrard has a better presence about him which makes him so big, but thats only down to the team he plays in, as i said, hes the big fish in the small pond, put him in our team, or chelseas, and i guarantee you fans would call him a flop after the first 3 games.

The north american is strong in you, if a liverpool player, ever put on the united shirt, ill personally hunt him down, beat him senseless, and let him lay down in pain, he cant move, he can hardly breath, and will be wishing he was dead.

To make it worse, a scouse(liverpool fan scouse that is) to put on the shirt? nah, iw wouldnt have it! there are better players then gerrard, you play rooney where gerrard plays and he would be 10 times the player, he and gerrard is.

  • Craig I agree with your analysis. Last season wasn’t broke. Berbatov was an impulse buy by Fergie. Yes, we could have used another striker after writing off Saha. But Berbatov wasn’t the best fit for the team. Our midfield is too weak, and our wingers too poor at crossing, to excel in a static 4-4-2 (which Berbatov fits best into). When we do play 4-4-2 it works best as a defensive formation designed to counter oppositions threat on the wings. Liverpool have no width, yet we are not reallly set up to attack down the wings the way we used to.

I think Ronaldo is best as a forward. With his ability in the air and finishing ability he is wasted on the wing. Especially since opposition players will hack him down and double team him on the wing as free kicks are less of a worry than they are when he is near the box.

I don’t think Berbatov is bad as an attacking midfielder. I’d like to see us with a 4-3-1-2 formation with Berbatov just behind Rooney and Ronaldo both of whom have the freedom to roam.

Ive kept it because it cheers me up, and reminds me of the performances United can manage to put in. Buy, would we need a Smith yesterday!!! Did never think I would say that!

I also noticed something about Ronaldo. Ive never seen him so free since then. He was absolutely tremendous!!! Shit, I wonder if Fergie has considered going back to the previous 4-2-3-1 formation? I wouldnt mind having Carrick and Hargo defend in midfield, with Giggs, Ronaldo and another winger out there just behind Rooney. Damn, if we could play that style, with the 4 on top moving all around the place, we defo wouldnt win many 1-0. There would be flying 3-0s and 4-0s all around the place. I miss those days…

Every couple of weeks you decide to troll this blog with comments about how bad Rooney is and tbh, I’ve had enough. The defense ships 4 goals and Rooney is the culprit? yeah I can see how that works  Before the Liverpool match Rooney had scored in his last 5 or 6 league games. Was he the culprit then? You say Ronaldo can’t produce magic every game. Well hows about doing it in one game because right now he doesn’t look a patch on Messi. He is scoring though so I suppose that’s a positive. Rooney got us the winning goal against City and gave us important leads in many other games. It was his piece of magic that allowed Ronaldo to score on Wednesday. Sorry he is not your cup of tea but on your Torres is so much better than him comment, Torres hasn’t been that good this season himself, but like Rooney on his day is unstoppable.

    Ronaldo–Giggs–Nani

  • @colver: Don’t get me wrong Colver. I have regard for Berba, because he is a footballer used to making the ball do the work for him, rather than him running around like frenzied chicken ( like Tev and Park) do. Trouble is, he is having a hard time knowing just exactly where he fits into our system. If I can’t detect our system anymore, as a bystander, then how the heck is Berba going to work it out. I feel sorry for the guy, because a good few times he has been in very good positions in the box, and free, but the ball is not given to him. United players don’t seem to get the ball to him, and shoot themselves and balls it up. That’s why we are not getting the goals we should. But Ronnie should not be stuck out on the wing. Fergie being the stubborn git he is, will stick with it though, and it may bring results, it has brought results because our defence has been solid. If the defence loses form though, that’s when we begin to lose it and are not able to hold on to the one goal lead, as we proved yesterday. I still feel that our MF is weak and lacking though, and I have said that for 2 seasons now. That and Ronnie stuck out where he cannot do any damage, has not helped us this season. We are top though, so Fergie will say things are good, like he said to the media that UNITED were the best team yesterday  . Fergie lives on Fergie’s planet, and he always comes out a winner in the end – S000000000. Our wobble has not come at a good time, but remember last year we dropped points too, and it went to the wire. Not good for the heart mate, but that’s Man Utd. • I know Ive sounded fucking silly since yesterday, claiming we should sell Berba, Scholes, Neville, Oshea, Fletcher and so on…. I was just a little angry(actually I nearly wrecked my TV out of anger! I should seriously consider anger management… Maybe a good way to meet Rooney?! ). I think we have the best team in the world. I wouldnt swap any of our players with any of those scousers. Its just that Torres and Gerrard had the momentum yesterday. I think that when Vidic gave Torres his goal, they got the confidence they needed. Torres turned his back when Ronaldo took his penalty, looking down on the ground as if he had given up. But Vidic gave Fernando his birthdaay present a week to early, and that changed the game. We might have won by a couple of goals had it not been for Vidics error, because we were looking very hungry just before they scored…. But I wont blame Vidic, if there was one player you could forgive for such a mistake, it is him. And thats not only because I am scared he would kill me, but… Torres just got his chance and took it. Andy and Carrick looked shaked in the middle, and Evra seems to have lost a huuuuuuuge step in his speed. I wonder if he will ever recover? I really hope so, if not United should turn to a brasillian(or maybe go scouting in Norway… ). We are better than them, and I would rather lose twice to them and win the title than win twice against them and still not win. They are happy because they got the double over us, and we are happy because we will win more trophies than them this season. Our lads got a wake up call that was very much needed, and this will only do us good(I hope). So in the end, everybody wins! Hopefully…

Some days you might look at him and say “how come that kind of player is playing for fucking Liverpool?”, and on another day you think “He isnt good enough to clean my boots!” Unfortunately it was the former yesterday… Well, it had to happen someday didnt it?! He couldnt go a decade without playing a good game against us?
