  • @Craig Mc: He got the player before he ever got the ball and I feel it is doubtful over the ball. I saw the ball move because Carrick chipped to the side to get around Gomez. Nope, NO WAY man, That was a penalty. I’ll go to my grave believing it. This is not bias talking, believe me.

  • @Dan: He let it all hang out old school in the second half because we were down by two. All of a sudden it’s out with Nani and Fletcher and in with Tevez and Scholes and we started to press. Fortunately Spurs fold up like a cheap tent. Once we got the penalty they completely choked. A better team would have regrouped. We still gave them chances but we were buoyed by the penalty and we started to believe. I still feel our finishing lacked crispness. Both Rooney goals weren’t exactly clean and there were errors defensively. Berba’s goal was a lucky rebound. Only Ronaldo’s goal was truly great. But still, they went in so we had some luck go our way to. We needed some luck because we certainly haven’t had much of it lately. Special thanks to Spurs for sitting out the second half. A bunch of numbnuts wankers.

  • shit, i missed the game…
woke up and saw the score on soccernet, first thing I had to do was come check was happening on here.

    firstly – UNITED FOR LIFE!!!!!!

the comments are hilarious, from despair, bitching, to redemption and glory!
I need to get my hands on a vid replay of the whole game.

this is what we live for eh, the united we know and love,
feels like we need to get hit about before switching on lately, similar to the Villa game,

it’s like someone in a boxing match who gets hit around at the start, gets so pissed off they go on a rampage and leave the other opponent, KO’d on the floor within an inch of their life…

this may or may not be the right timing, but when Nev eventually does retire. I know the arm band will most likely go to Rio, but my heart wants Rooney, he’s the closest player compared for heart to Keano right now, passion confused with anger.

and last but not least: @name: haha! scouse wanker, not the place to come and talk shit.

  • @Eric the Red: Rooney’s performance today was of legendary status. He should get the captaincy for this performance because of the leadership, desire and hunger he showed. That’s the definition of delivering in the clutch. Three cheers for the Electric Roonaroo.

  • @Matt: Do you read my posts mate? I mentioned that three times already.  But yes you are right. Hell Neville should man up and do what Beckham did with England and volunteer to give up the captaincy for the good of the team. Selfish prick. Injured and basically useless all the time and he refuses to give up the C.

  • @Mr.Muhozi: It’s more like the Brazilian 4-2-2-2 mate. Two holding midfielders and then two wide midfielders (Rooney and Ronaldo who have carte blanche to do whatever they want with two forwards in Tevez and Bebrbatov sliding all over the place trying to create gaps. Brazil works this well when both Kaka and Ronaldinho were at their best. It looks like 4-2-4 but it is really an attack oriented 4-2-2-2. Either way, it works when the emphasis is on attack. But it does leave you open in the back, especially on the flanks, which was shown today and even in the second half. Fortunately Spurs lost their mojo after the penalty and they really weren’t much of a threat.

  • @Mr.Muhozi: And going back to the days of Pele Jairzinho, Gerson and Rivelino sounds all romantic and all but is not really valid because that was a truly different game that was played then despite the formations. No, what you saw today is Brazil’s 4-2-2-2 that Barca used quite a bit under Rijkaard.

  • @Grognard: brasil developed 4-2-2-2 in 1994, only because the 4-2-4 and 4-3-3 they played was failing miserably.

whatever united was playing, 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1 4-2-4 4-3-3 4-5-1 whatever it worked and i want it to stick because i love seeing united play like this,

  • @Grognard: Why the hatred though? The reason modern languages like English has managed to grow is due to it’s dynamism and ability to adapt to change. ABU as far as I know is a word that’s around for over 15 years in recent memory, and has borne out of United fans’ cynicism of media (other fans’) bias and hatred of United’s dominance that they went with the mentality: Anyone But United. Since it became such a widely used phrase in writing in most United fan magazines and sites, it went through the natural progression to an acronym.

I’m sure you, as a North American, would understand the need for acronyms in language — it makes commonly known phrases easier to type/speak. You could argue that you didn’t know what it meant, but on a United board that terminology is fairly common.

Either way, Anyone But United is 15 letters, ABU is 3. :D I think it’s a no brainer for someone who has to use this phrase a lot.

  • @Red Ranter: We can have it rapped up by then, if we win all our remaining games and liverpool drop points.

or if we somehow get a rather large goal difference by the arsenal game, and can afford to not score goals for two games.

  • @NicoQB: thanks for those links mate,

it was great seeing the different reactions to each goal,

ronaldo picking the ball back from the net and running back
rooney, not over celebrating, but believing we could still win
ronaldo going mental with the leading 3rd ( though he threw his shirt so far, it could be mistaken that he didn’t want it!?… nah i don’t think so)
and berbatov’s relief when he scored

  • As someone mentioned earlier i think we changed to a 4-2-3-1, with carrick and scholes in the midfield 2, with rooney on the left, ronnie on the right, with berba behind tevez. It worked well looking at it cos we scored 5 goals playing like that. Some people however will say it wont if we play that as our main team cos its not defensive enough but i have to disagree with that. Its true we scored the 5 in the second half when spurs just completely sat back but in all honesty how many teams actually have a go at us. Seriously apart from the top 4 and a few decent teams like blackburn how many teams dont sit back and do try to score. Not many at all, i just wish that we went with this attacking formation more often. Whilst im not suggesting we play it against arsenal say on wednesday i do think it should be used against middlesbrough next week. Why not, are boro gonna be too much for us to handle defensively, i doubt it. I say lets try it more often, i know today we had no choice but to go all out on the attack but if we could score 5 goals against a spurs side that sat back for 45 mins, what could we do from the start against boro. We have played poor all season and it was refreshing to see that kind of football today. It reminded me of the united of old, the united football i feel in love with. Sadly this season we have seen to much football of the 1st half kind and not enough of the 2nd. I truly hope ferguson took notice of how we basically took apart a very decent spurs side when we deployed the 4-2-3-1. Most importantly tevez played a huge part in the turn around and if we were to play this sort of formation on a more permanent basis he could be lethal and his services would be needed on a permanent basis as well.
I truly hope we dont see the 1st half tactics any more, more on the lines of what we saw 2nd half. I guess we will have to wait and see how fergie goes, but theres no denying that when we play like that we are truly amazing to watch, the best maybe, better than barca i think.

  • @Red Ranter: Typical reaction from somebody under 30. It’s lazy and I for one never knew what it meant. Why? Because I don’t live in Manchester. There should be some courtesy for older bastards like myself who don’t suffer from ADD (that’s Attention Deficit Disorder for those who think I was being lazy) and who would appreciate the use of pure English instead of abbreviations that don’t always transcend borders or continents for that matter. Whether its 3 letters or 15 letters, the courteous thing to do is to take the time to write it out for all to understand. Otherwise it comes across as rude and lazy to people like myself who give 100% every time they write a post.

Sorry but it was new to me.  Hey, and the “old man” reference was uncalled for.

  • @Grognard: Yeah i know mate people always say that but i always forget. Sorry to everyone, i will remember to put my writing into paragraphs, its just when you feel the need to speak about something thats annoying you, i go on a sort of role and just dont stop, sorry to all.
Just onto another point, as i mentioned earlier it seemed that rooney switched to the left side of midfield in the 2nd half and was absolutely excellent too. Just was thinking back to say 2 seasons ago when he played there and he was really struggling, yet today on that left side he was simply excellent. Is the boy wonder coming of age, he certainly seems to be doing the business whether hes playing on the left, in the middle or wherever and its really good to see.
As i mentioned earlier we now need to look to the arsenal game and im just thinking about formations to play and bearing in mind arsenal have alot of injuries, i just want to see us go with the 4-2-3-1 we ended with and be bold, go attacking and take a good lead to the emirates. The formation seemed excellent and i know its a bold decision and a big gamble but like me fergie is a gambling man and i just hope he goes with the following team:

    VDS
    RAFAEL RIO VIDIC EVRA
    CARRICK ANDERSON
    RONALDO BERBA ROONEY
    TEVEZ

Tevez seemed to play as the lead striker strangely enough today but the 3 of berba, ronaldo and rooney did brilliantly swapping positions, we just looked excellent.
I know its a little early talking about formations for the arsenal game but i just really like this 4-2-3-1 formation and todays evidence proves it can work. 1 game i know but its the best 45 mins ive seen in ages.
I just really wanted to know all your views on this formation. Some may say its too attacking but i just feel with 2 good midfielders it would work well allowing the front 4 to cause damage to any defence. Ok maybe its not the best time to play this against arsenal, but definitely it should be tried against the lower based teams starting with middlesbrough next saturday and teams of that ilk. What do you all think?

  • @MUFC Fan in America: Yeah it maybe is a bit attacking against a good attacking team like arsenal but definitely against say middlesbrough next saturday it would be ideal. Lets be honest how many teams in the league dont sit back against us, not many. We should definitely try it against the lower table teams at home and in tough away games where we need alot of attacking options. I personally feel its about the best team and most attacking team we could put out.

  • @Grognard: If you’ve read my blog posts over the past 2 years you’d know better about the value I place on writing decent English, before stereotyping me as a typical under 30 year old.

News flash: Just because I can understand the motivation behind using an acronym doesn’t mean I will abbreviate every possible phrase.

I am not talking about unheard of acronyms. It’s irritating if someone uses an acronym only he and his dog uses. But ABU is a reasonably well known term among United fans who are not even necessarily from England.

If you don’t know you can ask, instead of calling people pathetic for using something they thought most might actually know. Not really their fault.

In my personal opinion, the use of LOLs and ROFLs are more criminal abuse to the language than actually abbreviations of proper words. Doesn’t mean I have to give a lecture on grammar and punctuation. I’ve spelled those out on the comments policy. :D

  • I’ve said it MANY times before but i’ll say it again anyway, Thank God for Wayne Rooney. He is the heart, the engine, the spirit of this United team. Absolute fuckin magic! How did we come back from 2-0 down? Mmmmmmmmmm …. Couldn’t have been tactics, could it? Naaaaaah, Fergie doesn’t do tactics, everyone knows that!!!
I had to go offline at halftime, my inlaws arrived! Ho HUM, banished upstairs into the spare room to watch the remainder of the game. At least i could vent my frustration/delight on my own without going ape at anyone else. I phoned my brother during the interval for a chat, he reckoned “it wasn’t our day, revival, no chance!” I assured him that we were gonna get a result, he didn’t agree. I said “just wait, you’ll see”, before long i was ringing him back for a “i told you so” chat. The lesson here is DONT EVER, EVER COUNT UNITED OUT, no matter how shit things are going, FFS 1999 Nou Camp, Anyone? This is why we are Champions, Again!
After a first half that was demoralising, i knew that the famous HAIRDRYER was going to be used like never before! And those muppets on Setanta had running odds from the bookies, United were 11/2 at halftime to win. I swear if there was a bookies anywhere close to me i would have put my house on a United comeback!
Back to the hairdryer, would have loved to see the inside of our dressing room then. And so it was, the lads came out for the second half like men possessed, esp Rooney. This was it Squeaky Bum Time x 10000 times, and they knew it, and they responded like true Champions. And they did it the Manchester United Way(TM), ie by nearly giving us a heart attack, aswell as ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK! I was so happy to see so many players respond, not only Rooney(but he led from the front!) but also Carrick, Ronaldo, Teves and Berbatov. Anyone who cant see what he offers now, needs SPECSAVERS in my opinion. The interplay, the holding the ball just long enough and spraying the ball effortlessly with total precision. It was a masterful display in attacking football, truly mouthwatering. We found what we’ve lacked so much this season, MOVEMENT. Berba was the fulcrum for this movement.More urgency from midfield and better supply gave him more time and space to express himself. And express himself he did, with aplomb.
At halftime it was obvious who the crowd wanted as the “Argentina” chants went around the ground, Fergie took note. Why was Nani subbed off? Simple, Fergie decided to go back to the roving attacking 3, no make that 4, although i thought Nani played quite well, Evra was having a nightmare and needed support, hence Rooney to the left! As soon as Teves entered the fray, Spurs had fuck all time or space, he hounded them like he was on a personal vendeta, fuckin great to watch. Even before the penalty, things were starting to look brighter for the United faithfull.
OK the dubious penalty ABU commitee, thinks it was harsh. Harsh my bollox, Fantastic through ball from Rooney, Carrick bearing down on goal, keeper to beat, Gomez takes him down, PENALTY, simple. More was to follow, and the crowd knew it and Spurs knew it. Rooney smelt fear and like the pitbull that he is, went for the jugular and dragged the rest of his teammates with him. Some people have mentioned Keano in Juve that day in 99, i completely concur. This was a massive game for him, his dribbling, his distribution, watching the one twos, the lay offs, and general interplay between the Fab Four was mesmirising!
“Are you watching Mersyside?” fuckin right they were, read it and weep You Scouse Bastards. United for the double, Again

I’m not that far behind you, as far as our age goes, so that was meant in jest  Now truth be told, when any of us first heard ABU, most of us had to be enlightened by someone else, so i wouldn’t worry. But it might explain my sceptisism when reading articles by known Liverpool fans and therefore , my response.

  • @Matt: mate, that is the formation Fergie has been ‘trying’ to employ all season; I said this a while back. The only difference btw today’s performance and the others is one of those two central midfielders got forward and relieved berba of his extra man-marker in the middle of the park, hence freeing him up to interlink with the other forwards. Carrick was allowed to go forward today and see what happened!! The formation just clicked. Fergie has been too cautious so far this season and I really hope this performance made him realise once again that the best way to defend is to attack.

Free Carrick or whoever is the more attacking of the midfield pairing and we would demolish teams. I mean, we have one of, if not the most devastating attacking line-ups in the premiership, so why does Fergie use them as midfielders/defenders? In Rio and Vidic, we have two stoppers who won’t let anything past them so why do we need two central midfielders to give them cover? Free one to join in attack and I would nominate Carrick, Giggs or Ando to employ that role, moreso Carrick. He is an excellent passer, shooter, controller & dribbler of the ball. Not to mention his timely runs in the box when given the chance. This guy can be our Frank lampard if Fergie lets him.

I was really impressed with the 2nd half performance today. It was not the goals but the determination to win and play like champions showed by all our players in that half. This is what they have been lacking and liverpool have been showing for sometime and it got me worried. Rooney, Ronaldo, Tevez, all of them came out in the second half loking for it and my, did they get it. Arsene better be afraid! He’s talking about how he’s studied us and plotted our downfall, I bet he didn’t see this regained mojo coming. His makeshift defence are going to be in for a torrid time this wednesday and I for one can’t wait.

  • @Red Ranter: Sorry mate but I stand by what I said because there seems to be a little discrimination here towards people who aren’t as Internet savvy or who don’t use LOL and ABU every time they write a sentence. I never heard it before and I am far from living in the wilderness, so telling me that it is common is truly BS (Hows that for an acronym?). For too long many of us over 40 have had to be overwhelmed and barraged with gibberish on different forums from people under 30 who are just plain lazy. So forgive me if this particular ABU thing has inflamed a pet peeve of mine. Call it a crusade of mine for folks on this site to stop using acronyms that may not make sense to everyone out there. Bleeping Internet is turning minds into putty.

  • @phoenix red: That pillock on Setanta Craig Burley got me so incensed with his never ending crusade over that penalty. He wouldn’t shut up about it all game and what gets me is that not only was he wrong, but even if he was right, it’s such a close call, you cannot fault the referee for going Man Utd’s way on the decision. But instead he was calling it obvious and calling Howard Webb a homer and just spouting total crap. Fine we get it Burley, you hate United.

  • @phoenix red: Not a problem mate. I am a little touchy because every time I mention something about stuff like that, I get clobbered for it. I am far from ignorant and I don’t live under a rock. I peruse United and footy sights all the time and everyone knows how much I contribute to Red Rants but then they try to tell me that ABU is a common thing that everyone knows and that fact that i don’t know makes me a numpty. So I got a little defensive because one thing I am not is a numpty. I’m not from Liverpool.

One thing I have always battled against is the spread of geekism on the Internet. You know, language, acronyms and gibberish that only under 30′s with computers and IT jobs who think they are smarter than everyone else because they can masturbate online. So that is why I take exception to others poking fun at me over something like that. RR and others would say I overreacted, but I say I was frustrated being referred to as an idiot for not being 22 and from England. Anyway, I got that off my system. Cheers.

  • @phoenix red: Love the passion here, man!!, and I agree about Rooney 110%. His fury riled up the rest of the team to such a pitch, that they became completely unstoppable.

It wasn’t so much a display of delightful movement, or magical finishing, but more of a brutal bludgeoning, that in its 30 minute whirlwind, took the very life out the opponent and probably Liverpool too!!

It was vengeance and pay back for our recent malaise. It was the re-emergence of the United spirit and it was very, very powerful statement to us, SAF, and of course, ABU!

I thought Rooney had struggled for years to stamp his will on this team and today he stamped and he stamped, and he stamped and in the end they gave into his demands. He is the leading man in a team of brutal men that will lead us to the Holy Grail!!!

It essentially, was the answer to…. “Who do you follow?” “Anybody but United” – ABU, but later turned around by United fans to represent journalists and others in the media who had an obvious anti United stance.

Burley was a disgrace not because he was right or wrong but because he was so sure he was right over a play that could go either way due to it’s closeness. I believe it was a penalty but even I admit it was a close thing. To call the referee a homer when he was giving yellows to United players for laughs just makes me sick. You made it a big deal by going on a crusade just because you didn’t know a term that actually wasn’t as rare as you thought it to be. There’s nothing wrong in learning a new term that has been in usage for a while. No one is going to think you are a numpty. And if they do, then they really have issues in life. There are more important things in life than people crucifying you for not knowing the meaning of that acronym.

So if you intend to start telling people how to comment, beyond what’s already spelled in my comment policy, I’m sorry, that’s not happening.

I have a policy in place in my comments policy where I tend to delete (or warn) commenters that overtly use caps or use text messaging language. But at the same time I wouldn’t want to strangle people’s expression by getting overly anal about it — although the main reason for that is it takes a lot more effort. There’s a fine line that I draw and it’s not a science really.

So my final word on this particular case is this: ABU is in fairly common usage. If people don’t know the term, they can always ask and learn its meaning. Nothing wrong with a little education, and no one is going to scoff at another for it. If they do I am here to moderate and help out by taking care of wind up merchants. But if you have a problem with the usage of ABU, well then, tough luck mate. You will have to live with that.
