Man Utd v Tottenham: Preview
Here we go with the preview. We play Tottenham who are certainly flying high with their demolition of Arsenal. Moreover Juande Ramos is yet to lose a Cup game in years. Whether Tottenham have truly risen from the mediocrity to challenge the top four remains to be seen; today’s game could be a reasonable indicator.
They have also been scoring goals at will this season with Berbatov certainly a major threat. So today’s game cannot be taken too lightly.
Which is why we would most likely field our best team. Rooney and Tevez as strikers, Ronaldo, Giggs on the wings, Hargreaves and Anderson in the centre with our fab four in defence. Scholes can’t surely be expected to start with even a bench role under doubt.
The Gaffer has also been wary of Spurs in his press conference:
“You saw from their performance on Tuesday night, they’re on the up. There’s an increase in their performances. The result on Tuesday will have them buoyed, there’s no question about that. It wasn’t Arsenal’s strongest team, but it was nevertheless an emphatic 5-1 victory. I thought Tottenham were better. They could have scored more goals. It was an emphatic victory and I don’t think Arsenal could complain about it. Funnily enough, the goalscoring statistics at Old Trafford aren’t great, they’re usually 1-0 or something like that. The goals are usually reserved for White Hart Lane, there have been some very big scores down the years. It’ll be a tight cup tie again but I can’t complain - I have a home draw in the FA Cup. You’ve got to perform, you can’t take things for granted. But our team is in good form.â€
Meanwhile Danny Wellbeck seems to have been elevated to the first team. It is nice to see an academy product fast tracked to the first team and reports of him have always been very positive. But he’s 17 and is still a raw talent so don’t necessarily expect him to be playing until we suffer a disastrous injury situation or if we are 10-0 up at half time during some game.
Oh well, it’s good to be finally watching a game of significance after a rather long week, personally. So without much ado, I will leave this post here and over to you to discuss. Come on you reds!!!

if are loaned stikers, manucho and welbeck impress, i think its the end of an un-named stiker, 6 strikers all have strengths and few weaknesses, with all of them a strength is they dont get injured. tis the end of the un-playable player who shall now on be named the Un-named player.
January 27th, 2008 at 12:16
it looks like its going to be kitson and rooney for england in the friendly, rooney because its rooney, kitson because he’s highest scoring, gabby will probably be on the bench i expect
January 27th, 2008 at 13:08
Can someone plz tell me what this unnamed striker thing is?
January 27th, 2008 at 13:51
I assume he is talking about Saha. Bit premature, as we have no idea if Wellbeck or Manucho are anywhere near the required standard or Saha’s level.
Interesting article I saw this morning on our midfield options.

anderson was meant to be a striker? i thought he was a possible replacement for the ginger, intresting read.
January 27th, 2008 at 14:26
Striker is probably the wrong word, but the Anderson we bought certainly didn’t appear to be a CM, he seemed to play in a more advanced position. I would be curious to know if the CM role was preplanned by SAF or if he stumbled upon it in training.
Team News:
VDS
O’Shea
Rio
Brown
Evra
Ronaldo
Carrick
Hargreaves
Giggs
Rooney
Tevez
Subs: PIG, Nani, Anderson, Scholes, Fletcher (?)
January 27th, 2008 at 14:41
vida? im getting sick of SAFS love of carrick, he SHOULD of played andy.
January 27th, 2008 at 14:42
with scholes and fletcher on the bench andy wont play.
January 27th, 2008 at 14:43
Where is VIDIC?!
January 27th, 2008 at 14:46
Vidic is presumably injured. Carrick has been our best performing CM in recent matches so he fully deserves his place.
January 27th, 2008 at 14:51
JB, lets not turn this into another carrick is shite/great thread. just read that vida has a virus(lol).

Tevez levels things up!nice work from giggs too.
maybe my prediction for a united win will turn out to be right after all.

Any streams? I want to watch…
January 27th, 2008 at 16:56
What a relief.. Hargreaves, Evra and Brown had a horrible game.. Ferdi was ok… Scholes looked rusty when he gave away the ball cheaply.. On the otherside Carrick, Rooney and Tevez were excellent… 3rd round here we come…
January 27th, 2008 at 16:57
preety dry match, are best player without a doubt was hargo, he showed why he is first team, ronny wasnt his self today, but didnt stop him scoring 2 goals, anderson made his first team claim in his cameo, evra was poor just poor, pretty boring match because it was so even yea thats it.
January 27th, 2008 at 16:58
my god utsav, what game were you watching, hargreaves had a great game, without him spurs would probably have won. gosh, are you a child, and hello, we’re going to the 5th round **pp**.
January 27th, 2008 at 17:05
Yeah I’m sorry utsav, but Hargreaves and Tevez were both brilliant today, either one could be motm. And scholes was good, he gave the ball away once but you won’t find a midfielder with more composure on the ball, that’s what Carrick lacks, and I definitely prefer Scholes over hi, no matter how well Carrick has been playing in the last few matches.
January 27th, 2008 at 17:08
with out doubt hargreaves best peformance of the season, his only mistake i can remember he made was letting jenas run the blind side of him, every other time he was amazing.
January 27th, 2008 at 17:08
my mistake abt the round number…. but relax man.. dont call me a child nd all only coz u dun agree with me.. .I thought hargreaves was bad coz of the chances that Jenas got.. the space that jenas made and the one on ones he(jenas) missed…
January 27th, 2008 at 17:14
im not calling you a child because of hargo, im calling you one for saying we’re of to the third round lol, i only saw hargreaves do 1 bad thing.
January 27th, 2008 at 17:23
i also thought OH was poor and i was hoping fergie to take him out and bring scholes in, with giving us both carrick(who had a very good game) and scholes in the midfiled….
It was evra’s worst performance this season, he looked ok only after lennon was taken off…i think OH, brown, evra and ronaldo(barring his goals) had poor game…
Tevez, Carrick, Rooney, VDS had good game so did giggs….

manuchooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
oh please get the permit.
January 27th, 2008 at 19:21
Hargo wasn’t that good… I haven’t really seen him play well (or often) enough to warrant his price tag this season. He let Jenas away from him 3 or 4 times and it could have cost us big time if Jenas had brought his finishing boots. Scholes looks quite rusty. Anderson looked good in his cameo appearance. Also I don’t understandhow Brown had a bad game, I thought he looked quite solid.
January 27th, 2008 at 19:30
double from manucho
January 27th, 2008 at 19:36
manucho……………………..get him in the team….
January 27th, 2008 at 19:44
I, too, thought Hargo didn’t play that well. He was being too aggressive, chasing all over the field. when he won tackle, excellent. when he didn’t, he left massive gap. Nevertheles, he’s been hardworking, and i love the lad. Btw, scholes is back!!
January 27th, 2008 at 19:57
As far as Manucho’s work permit goes, Angola are currently 72nd in the FIFA world rankings, if they can get over 70 when the application is made then there shouldnt be any problems. Angola have just beaten Senegal who are 40th so thats probably enough to put them in the top 70. Enough caps over a recent period of time and playing for a top 70 nation virtually guarentees him a work permit, I believe.
January 27th, 2008 at 20:21
big manucho…..fast becoming a future hero of mine. His headin abilities are sick
January 27th, 2008 at 20:35
yeah manucho is great with his head. Even if he doesn’t have the skills, he’d make a great target man for us and would be very useful at set pieces.
January 27th, 2008 at 21:02
yea he could come in at 65 or 75 min if we need a goal and catch a header to win looks promising.
January 27th, 2008 at 21:09
Hargreaves was superb today,he won the ball countless times.rooney was really disappointing. These days I feel he has more bad games than good ones. His overall play I find to be pretty poor.what makes it worse is he starts to run around looking for an argument with players and officials.Brown was shaky.I blame him for the first goal,he could have cleared the ball but he chose to let it go through. Its good to hear though that he is signing a new contract soon. Its the first time this season we have all our midfield fit.Its going to be such a challenge for fergie to keep them all happy. My choice would be hargo and anderson. The two lads are fit as hell.to end, what a performance by manucho!thats the target man we needed to give our striking department some aerial power.
January 27th, 2008 at 21:43
A good cup tie if not a great performance.
Rooney put himself about but was not great and Ronaldo was ananymous mostly but bagged himself a couple.
What mystifies me is this constant criticism of Carrick by a few on this board.
Ok he hasn’t had a sparkling season so far but last season he was brilliant and he really made the difference.
Recently he has been looking like his old self. Today he was excellent. He was the one under pressure fom Spurs when he received the ball and time and time again he was quick enough to either shake them off, play it simple or occasionally find the killer pass.
Hargreaves was fine and played his role well but Carrick was the man today. He was unlucky to be subbed but I hope that was only to give Scholes a run out.
January 27th, 2008 at 21:50
I couldnt catch Angolas game today, were both of Manuchos goals headers?
January 27th, 2008 at 23:50
and can someone please put the link to manucho’s goals. thanks
January 27th, 2008 at 23:58
Hello
This really has nothing to do with the topic but why do most manchester utd fans hate Malcom Glazer. I am buccaneer fan and a Manchester utd fan and Malcom is a great owner in my opinion
January 28th, 2008 at 0:13
first one amazing header second was a scramble at the goal with two defenders and the goalie Manucho pushed it threw their legs.
January 28th, 2008 at 0:25
two good goals from Manucho scored two good goals for angola today, he’s looking promising! just what united needs, one commentator likened him to stapleton/hughes, from a united point of view, we need a striker whose competent with his head, all those crosses might have a target now, we’re playing so much football now, we need a strong squad. variety is the spice of life and can help to win competitions! i just think that it would be great to have a proper hitman with some height in the box. Rooney had a frustrating day, but i’d still want him on the park, his work rate is brilliant, his running into space and deft touch have got us out of a tight spot before, not to mention his tackling back, he made the pen today too! its great that himself and teves work well together, but i think that a player like manucho could give him more space/time to express himself. i thought hargo had a good day at the office, apart from a couple of hiccups. he looked like he should be wearing that no. 16 shirt! by the way i loved the “there’s only one keano” retort chants at the end. come on you reds! there’s still a treble on this season!
January 28th, 2008 at 0:57
i feel bad for rooney.. he had that goal until dawson “saved” it . . amazing control
January 28th, 2008 at 1:55
