Manchester United 08/09 Season Preview
I thought of doing a three part preview, but then decided against it because it could be rather long drawn and tiresome. Also, I’m sure, I wouldn’t want to bore you with a three part preview because I really don’t get the point of stretching a preview to three parts. So let’s see how I can preview the 08/09 season as short as possible.
The Attack:
This will be the most interesting part of our team. If — and at this point it looks like it’s safe to say, when — Berbatov arrives (along with Manucho) it will give our strike force a new look. Sir Alex Ferguson will be left with a happy conundrum — that of picking his best two strikers. Whilst the price paid for Berbatov ensures that he will get a sizeable chunk of appearances this season, the fees paid for Rooney, and that touted for Tevez, is no chicken feed either. It will be interesting to see how the boss picks his starting strikers.
When I talk about attack, I also refer to our wingers who play an important role in our interchangeable system. Early on, with a tough fixture list, an injured Ronaldo, a suspended Nani, and a new signing (Berbatov, hopefully) it will be quite tricky for us going forward. It could mean having to play Tevez on the wing if Rooney and Berbatov are to be pressed into action against Newcastle (as unlikely as it may sound.) The return of Park to training augurs well for the short term as the ageing Ryan Giggs will need to be on his better days early on.
Let’s make no pretense about it: the start of the season is going to be very challenging and tough. And the key to our fortunes for the rest of the season rests on how Fergie manages his depleted forward line for the first few games.
If we stay afloat till October when Ronaldo returns, it will give us the boost to switch gears. Or who knows… maybe our new signing will inspire us even before Ronaldo steps on the turf.
Player to watch out for: Carlos Tevez. The Argentine, to me, looks like he’ll have a stormer of a season.
The Midfield:
On paper, we have a midfield as good as any in the Premier League. Unfortunately, at the moment, Hargreaves remains crocked, and Anderson is in Beijing. So we will start with Carrick and Scholes in midfield. Which isn’t all that bad against the likes of Newcastle and Portsmouth. In fact, with Darren Fletcher I wouldn’t be too worried to get the job done against such opposition. But the return to full fitness of Hargreaves, and the return of Anderson will give our midfield the formidable look that it deserves.
Player to watch out for: I think this is going to be Michael Carrick’s season. But again, I also think Hargreaves will prove everyone why he was bought. For real.
The Defence:
It’s the one area I am least worried about. We have an outstanding first choice back four and an able backup. If Neville is fit, he will return to the starting XI. It would need a few games to gauge his value to the team, although it would be extremely unfair on Wes Brown. I don’t need to talk anymore about the peerless Rio, Vidic and Evra axis. I expect another stingy season from our defence — barring any injuries.
Player to watch out for: None in particular. Because they are all quality and they’ve all proved their pedigree.
Overall Performance and Tactics
I have a feeling that we’ll appear a little disjointed at the start of the season because of a lack of a settled line up in pre-season, and due to injuries and suspensions. But I have been wrong in the past. Queiroz’s absence will be quite a blow, however, Fergie’s experience will see through that problem. With the presence of a target man we will see more of a 4-2-3-1 formation.
Expectations:
It will sound rather strange to you all, but I generally am a low expectation fan. It gives me immense joy just to see my team trot out week-in, week-out and put on a display of some excellent attacking football. And as a Manchester United fan I am spoilt in that sense. The years of trophies have made me indebted to the lads and Fergie in particular, so I feel guilty if I expect Fergie to deliver me a treble or even another Premier League title. I think I will be satisfied with a trophy other than the Carling Cup. Don’t get me wrong — I will be gutted if we don’t win the Premiership. That’s something I always want because that’s what we spend the year waiting for. But I won’t call for heads to roll if we get pipped at the post. As long as we play good football, I think we can win the league title this year too. Personally, I’d like us to win the FA Cup because it’s been a while — I know, I know, we are a spoiled lot! I won’t be gutted if we didn’t win the Champions’ League, except of course, if we lost it to another English club in the final.
Predictions:
I think we’ll win either the League or the FA Cup. The presence of a good core of youth will get us far into the Carling Cup competition (and I think we’ll win it this time.) And we might make it as far as the semis of the Champions’ League.
So that’s the preview for the season. Hopefully you found it terrible reading (especially my expectations and predictions for the new season). I am excited about the new season and I hope you are too. Fasten your seat belts with only two more days to go! Hopefully we at Red Rants can help you along another roller coaster season.
Come on you Reds!

I don’t agree with your view that Carrick is the one to watch in midfield RR, surely Anderson and a fully fit Hargo are the ones to watch this season. Anderson hopefully will settle and becomes more consistant and Hargo to get a decent run of games will be awesome.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:34
We’ll make it another double, I have no doubt. There’s no team out there as strong as our’s, and if we can keep reasonably clear of injuries, we’ll do it again. In fact, I think we’re in for a tripple with the FA.
I know, it might be overly optimistic, but we certainly have the squad to do it. It’s not my expectations, but simply my hopes. If we sign Berbatov, it’s not that unrealistic, even though we’ll still need luck to aid us… as any team will.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:41
Starting games - Park on the left, Fletcher on the right. If Anderson returns, maybe he could play on the left wing? I think we need another winger, maybe Sir Alex will be tempted to put Fabio DA Silva as a left winger? After all - it’s only Keegan’s Newcastle, they’re at home and i rekon the best team to practice different formations and team selections against. lol. ALso, does anyone think we should get Owen next summer? He’ll be available on a free transfer, has the pace to break-away and finish off a lethal counter-attack with Roo and or Tev.. How is the prospect of playing with Manucho looking for the first few games of the season? Ah i’m so tired.
August 14th, 2008 at 10:54
Lol @ “i’m a low expecting fan”. Gosh, you don’t expect much do you?. Ah well. i think it’ll be the cups season.. the premiership will be a definite bonus. I think this season is the acid test as to whether this is indeed the best manchester united team ever. we do like hyping ourselves up dont we lol. at least we’re more realistic than “it’s our year” team. lol
August 14th, 2008 at 11:15
Btw happy Independence Day to Red Diablo and his/her fellow Pakistanis. Like the guy’s enthusiasm. Carrick will improve, but i think Anderson and Hargo as was pointed out by Stephen, will be explosive. I favour a simple 4 in mid and two upfront. I think Fergie should loosen the shackles on Andy’s feet and allow him more offensive responsibilities. My players 2 watch this term are Anderson,Hargreaves,Tevez and Nani. Once Andy scores OT will be exploding every week. Watch this kid carefully.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:30
Well im not as optimistic about Berbatov coming 2 Utd given that Levy has once again refused 2 budge on his £32m asking price,as per Daily Telegraph know alls. Thats ridiculous money honestly. I have a strong feeling that most clubs are now getting very ambitious and are not willing 2 sell their stars. Spurs with Berbatov,Valencia with Silva and Villa,Lyon with Benzema and i think Huntelaar at Ajax, Villa with Barry etc. Seems everyone wants 2 be more competitive now.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:31
If we get through the first 10 games, which most are really tough, and we are still up there with the front runners, then I do believe we can go on and take the Prem again, because we will have played most of our top competitors AWAY from home. United love making history, and I think we will be really going for the 2 in a row CL wins. I believe with all my heart we can do it.
At 32 million (if todays media reports are true), I do not think Berba is worth the investment at that price. It is okay for RR and others to say that we payed a bunch for other players, and ?32 million for Tevez, but Tev is 23 years of age, and we will be able to recoup quite a lot for him if he ever wants out. Not the same with Berba. I think United have messed around too long with this problem of recruiting another striker. It should have been done just as the season ended, but alas we have been sloppy. Now everyone knows how desperate we are, and the price for anyone will be skyrocketed. Sad, Sad, Sad.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:37
well obviously i think united will have a rough start but as the season progress: ronaldo’s fit, saha’s fit (LOL!), and even park ji sung, i think united has a shot at another double, but not a treble. maybe we’ll win the fa and the PL, but for the CL, maybe we’ll be cut from the semis.. @Bouncerboy, i think we shouldnt sign Owen just because he will be on a free transfer basis, he will be just an unused sub (we have manucho and frazier to put in). Over all united is on its “winning calibre mode”. The only threat now is chelski.
-mediocre o’shea =).

I hope that Possebon and the Da Silva twins will be brought in to train with the 1st team squad. Also that Ronnie will take them under his wing to help bring new things to their game. If they do extra training with those who stay behind to practice and improve their game skills, i.e. Nani, Anderson, Ronnie, etc, I believe it will be great experience and encouragement for the rest of the Brazilian and portuguese speaking United contingent. What do you all think?.
August 14th, 2008 at 11:53
I’m interested to see how the older players (over 30) begin to be phased out by Fergie this season. It is hard to accept, but this might just be Giggsy’s swan song. He is still class, but legs are starting to go. Last season he made 26 starts and was used as a substitute 5 times. Nani made 16 starts and was used 10 times. I would hope to see an almost exact flip-flop in appearances. I’m not sold on Neville being first-team just because he is fit. Wes was part of a record-breaking defense last year. Gary, on the other hand, is coming back from injury at 33. Personally, I think Nevs can exert just as much influence on the training ground and locker room as he can on the pitch. I expect Scholes to be seen a bit less, but of the 3 he will be the most important to our title hopes. I expect to see VDS at least 90% of the time. It is nice to have Silly as solid back-up at LB, but if his presence hinders FDS I’d prefer to see him leave.
Going to the other end of the spectrum, I will be equally interested to see how the youth players (u-22) are phased into the squad. I expect Nani to take a big step forward this year, but this can only happen if he gets consistent starts. I’m confident his petulance will be tempered by another year of maturity. Anderson has a tougher route to the first team as we are loaded at CM. Same goes for Possebon. Neither are quite ready to dislodge Carrick, Scholes, or OH when healthy, although their time is coming. I’m dying for the twins to get serious looks, but it simply won’t happen this year. Campbell has pace to burn, but I think he is a ways off from being anything but a 4th striker option. If we go out early in the Carling or the FA Cup with the players that will most likely feature, I will be shocked.

COME ON RR! Here comes the TREBLE!!!
August 14th, 2008 at 12:52
If we get berbatov from spurs than its going to be great season for rooney…I personaly think that he will prove why he is still number 1 england player (exept Rio maybe) and most gifted england player in the last decade…He was litlle overshadowed from Ronaldo after that bizzare incident on WC 2006, but this linking with berba is going to create new dimension in his game and plenty of space for him to show how good player he is…25-30 goals from him at least…Our primary goal this season must be EPL, everithing less would be huge dissapointment becouse this is our best side ever and we can not afford to lose this oportunity failing to show our winning nature….we have young team and bunch of players who will only improve and even younger and more talented genaration who will push for their place in our first team and it would be shame not to achive EPL glory again, at least..Cl will be bonus but EPL is most important silverware this season …For the first time I would like to see our youngers playing in the curling cup with big expectations from da silva brothers, possebon and company… all in all I expect graet season for man utd…
August 14th, 2008 at 13:19
well… my personal expectations are another Premiership crown… purely because I believe it would equal or overtake Liverpools record… I think though that the hunger of the players will be as ravenouse as ever… so we could see a FA Cup thrown in with a bit of luck.
I would love the Champions League but feel that at some point it will show that its a wish to far, what with the added fixtures we have this season… I pin it all on a season for Vidic without injuries… if we can get that then we may just get through the final push of the season…
Player to watch: Anderson
Trophies: Premiership, FA.Cup
August 14th, 2008 at 13:34
I dunno. I kinda like our chances to defend the CL if we get Berbatov, and depending on who you believe, that is still up in the air because of asshole Levy.
The Premiership depends on how far back we are when we get our squad back to relatively full ranks and health. Honestly though, when Le Glass comes back (what the heck did he hurt this time?), I think were going to see a relatively healthy and good season (by his standards) from him if we don’t get Berbatov.
I think we will get Carling, Premiership/FA Cup (not both), and at least to the CL semis.
August 14th, 2008 at 13:38
Where are you all getting the news that Levy has again screwed up the deal from?
August 14th, 2008 at 13:42
And does anybody know where i can get the last year’s away kit (black one)?
I don’t seem to find it anywhere…
August 14th, 2008 at 13:43

yea i think the deal just fell through, according to this guy on talking reds. http://community.manutd.com/forums/t/18754.aspx , o well, campbell will just need to shape up.
August 14th, 2008 at 13:52
30 goals from Rooney this seasom would be a miracle’s miracle. He is too selfless 4 such a haul. Add in the probable heavy rotation of our strikers this season then it becomes tricky. 25 goals from him would be a great imo. Tevez 20,Ronaldo 15,Rooney 20. Thats my goal prediction. Trophies? Lets put money on the League. Beyond that we are looking at bonuses. Barca,Inter or Juve will take the CL based on their teamsheet. Chelsea will be neck and neck in every competition and they have the most powerful midfield in Europe. If Deco adapts quickly then they should not be even slightly overlooked. In fact they along with Spurs are looking the most dangerous in pre season. Arsenal always play with an enviable team chemistry even after major changes. All their new signings are looking like they were born at Highbury watching the likes of Viera. Liverpool are less scary but Keane and El Nino will make a great partnership in time but thats all the success Liverpool will get. So we are looking at the same top 4 in last season’s order. Spurs may just give Liverpool a run ie if they manage 2 keep Berbatov and start the season on fire.
August 14th, 2008 at 14:05
Seems Berbatov is not coming after all. Not too arsed about it. Saha will be fit enough this season to put 15 in the back. Im serious. £32m 4 Berbatov is simple English 4 we are not selling him. I said it before. The almost big clubs are getting serious about being more competitive on the pitch. They wont sell all their stars in one go anymore.
August 14th, 2008 at 14:12
It’s really a shame how Levy has conducted himself through this. This has kinda hurt my view of Spurs.
August 14th, 2008 at 14:31
@AndyCR7: i think the black kit is not being produced anymore. everywhere i looked all the normal sizes are sold out leaving bullshit sizes like small or youth large. might want to look on ebay but i’m always wary of that because of authenticity concerns.
August 14th, 2008 at 14:49
wohoo! finally, the long frustrating summer is over and real action starts now. my line up for the newcastle game
EVDS

August 14th, 2008 at 14:51
when will manucho get work permit and when will wellbeck recover?
August 14th, 2008 at 14:52
I don’t believe all the stuff about Berba not coming. Particularly not from Dan’s link - he seems to be a bit too into the fake stuff these days, although in this case being taken in by it rather than making it.
If Spurs had held a press conference over 90 mins ago where Ramos said Berba was staying at Spurs, it would be all over the net by now.
Patience, patience.
August 14th, 2008 at 15:09
@Penguin: Hehe, i’ve turned over a new page now man, for now that is
August 14th, 2008 at 15:10
@Penguin: Do you you know the cut off point with regards to Berbatov’s registration for his avialibility for Sunday?
August 14th, 2008 at 15:15
Now that Spurs are putting a high prize on utd Now did you guys check the news ,Looks like HUNTELAAR is on the Move, So looks like we have to play with crocked SAHA this year too.I cant understand How Gill & co can be so unprepared about finding a striker for united.Screw spurs but there has to be a contingency plan right..We’ve got three strikers who are midgets(rooney,Tevez,CAmpbell)then we have a crocked one mr.SAHA.Well looks like REALSCUM would sign HUNTELAAR..http://www.goal.com/en-india/Articolo.aspx?ContenutoId=818248
August 14th, 2008 at 15:16
Hey do anyone know about the manucho’s work permit saga..
August 14th, 2008 at 15:21
@Stephen: I think it’s got to be in by close of business on Friday, but I’m not sure.
August 14th, 2008 at 15:32
@Penguin: Thanks Penguin, but I would think it would be unlikely if Fergie would throw him in so early anyway, if we sign him at all or by Friday.
@Despicable: With work permits I think and I am probably wrong, they get rufused then you have to appeal a lot of them for them to go through. I think we had to do that with Anderson.
With Manucho if we get Berba probably slinging him out on loan to another prem team to see how he gets on.
August 14th, 2008 at 15:36
@stephen Ya but the way he performed in African cup of nations goes gives him a chance to prove himself here… even if it means playing in carling cup or FA cup. That will be a good rest to the first team also..
August 14th, 2008 at 15:43
@Despicable: That is all well and good mate but the premiership is a different kettle of fish. Mayne loaning him out until Jan to for example West Ham will give him a chance to bed in, and get climatised to our league, at someone elses expense!
August 14th, 2008 at 15:47
@Stephen : Ya i got that, Neways i am from India, Working late in office sucks… neways hope to see good action on weekend. I believe we must use our brazillians more this season.. That will Keep the future safe, as they look promosing. Neways any other transfer news??
August 14th, 2008 at 15:54
Hey guys don’t you think the media played a negative part in the transfer of Berba…
August 14th, 2008 at 15:54
@Despicable: Fuck all mate really on the transfer side, I also agree mwte the Brazillian lets do need o get a run, what will be interesting is what if any role Gary Red plays next season, it could be tough for him.
August 14th, 2008 at 15:57
I still feel with the number of tournaments to be played and the tight schedule, SAF is bound to give them a look-in.
Even the extra tournaments like world champions league is a good platform.
August 14th, 2008 at 16:08
What a dry summer 4 Blackburn and Utd. Whats the name of the kid we bought from Roma and whats his position? Hope its not CM coz that would be hopelessly illogical. If Berbatov fails 2 make it to Red Manchester, who do u guys think should come in his place? Eto’o, the hyped up Huntelaar,Thierry, the capable Santa Cruz, the wishful thinking fantasy called Benzema or the ever recovering Saha. I would take Saha or Santa Cruz. Saha because he is capable 2 net at least 15 and his injury problems are due 2 end. Santa Cruz is not as good as the others but that means he wont mind the bench either. Lets forget Berbatov until Saf is seen at a press conference 4 Sky with Dimitar in a red shirt.
August 14th, 2008 at 16:12
@JAY wire: Ya true mate, We have given too much importance to him,we can do without him,Ya he would have been handful but unless its done, we shouldn’t expect too much..
August 14th, 2008 at 16:19
Stephen, if Manucho’s work permit has been refused, and United are appealing, he will not be able to play for any other premiership club. United said they are hopeful of getting his permit soon. He should not be farmed out. He is a very good footballer, and better than any of our potential reserve team forwards at present, i.e. Campbell etc. United can give him some playing time against the so called lesser teams, although in training with United, he scored goals against our Rio and Vid. So that may not appear much and you may find it comical, but I believe Manucho will do okay for us. Time will tell. Don’t make a fool of me Manucho lol.
August 14th, 2008 at 16:21
Ya now it is on his shoulder to keep your words
August 14th, 2008 at 16:25
Does anyone else also feel that this season we should put a lot more faith in our youngsters? I mean, unless we groom these kids 4 business purposes(think Rossi and Pique) then we should give them a real chance 2 prove themselves. Im thinking, the Brazilian henchmen, Evans and Campbell getting meaningful playing time. With a new striker possibly on the way,Campbell’s future would have been more favourable at Hull City. Maybe assign the Carling cup and games against weaker teams as opportunities. But give them a chance
August 14th, 2008 at 16:36
Craig Mc- I applaud u 4 giving Manucho a chance. I saw him at the African Nations Cup and he was HUGELY impressive. Someone was saying “he is from bloody Angola” so he isnt exactly good. Right. Does anyone know where the only African to win the WPOTY award came from? Bloody Liberia. Never even qualified for ACN in their history. Point is dont judge a player just coz he comes from “bloody Angola”. They were at the World Cup btw and Saf would not have made an great effort in bringing him here,if he he did not possess the necessary talent
August 14th, 2008 at 16:45
@Jay wire: Problem is they are quite far down the pecking order…
Let’s play one of my favourite games, pick the reserve team based on a fully fit squad (inc Berbatov).
First XI: EVDS; Neville, Rio, Vida, Evra; Carrick, Hargreaves; Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez; Berbatov.
Reserve XI: Foster; RDS, Brown, Evans, Silvestre; Nani, Scholes, Anderson, Giggs; Manucho, Saha
2nd Reserve XI: TK; Simpson (on loan), O’Shea, Cathcart (on loan), FDS; Park, Fletcher, Possebon, Martin (on loan); Welbeck, Campbell
Now that’s some squad!
August 14th, 2008 at 16:49
Actually probably put O’Shea and Park in the reserve team instead of Evans and Manucho.
August 14th, 2008 at 16:58
@Jay wire: Davide Petrucci, and his position is striker.
Prolly more like a forward, Rooney and Tevez way as he is touted to be the next Totti.
August 14th, 2008 at 17:03
Jezta- Thanks for the feedback.
August 14th, 2008 at 17:05
Penguin, how dare you leave Little man Nani out of the 1st X1 - to me his position in the first team should be sacrosanct - lol!. Come on Nani man. I don’t think Fergie will play the Roon Tev and Berba together, no more than he would if Saha was available.
Jaywire, like you mate I believe that it matters little where you are from country wise, but whether you have inherent football ability. Some people are just gifted with natural football talent. Like you, I saw Manucho in the African Nations cup, and he was so good. If he had better players around him, his playmaking for others would have really helped Angola to becoming unexpected giant killers in that tournament. We will only know though, when he is tried out in the premiership.
August 14th, 2008 at 17:14
Penguin- I hear u. But what is the reason 4 getting all these youngsters year in year out if none of them are not given a shouting chance. I was hugely disappointed by the sale of Rossi and Pique. I like what i see of Possebon, but why was he brought to OT. What of Petrucci? If Rossi a player who was being considered an option by AC Milan failed 2 make the grade when we had less striking options, how will Petrucci be any different . I honestly believe our main aim in breeding these kids is making a profit off them.
August 14th, 2008 at 17:20
@Craig Mc: I wasn’t, I am just a sceptic.
August 14th, 2008 at 18:12
@Jay wire:
Youth players are difficulty to deal with. If they arent able to be thrust immediately into a team you have a problem. Do you send them out on loan and never have them around to fill in where needed and impress, do you keep them at the club but limit their playing time. Rossi if he could have been patient a bit longer would have got his chance, Pique needed games really but in central defence its tough to give players that chance, especially when you have such a good partnership like the one that rio and vidic have
August 14th, 2008 at 18:21
Remember what I said a couple of days ago about Berbatov coming? I said we should not celebrate and talk about it like it was a done deal because we were falling in to media trap once again. An guess what? I was right yet again. Problem is, I know better and yet I still let my imagination get away with the thought of of us playing with this player.
Really, we all should have known better. Daniel Levy is a cunt and a totally bitter and angry SOB. I think he is determined to swindle the club for much more than Berbatov is worth. Yesterday I reported late having heard that Berbatov practiced with Spurs yesterday. Before this new Levy stuff came out, I knew right then and there that this deal was in serious jeopardy and that we stood a very good chance of not getting the player.
I’m not sure what in God’s name is going on here but I do know this, we should never ever ever take any rumors from any of these papers seriously again. And if we do, we are fools. How many times do we need to get our hearts broken and our souls embarrassed by the constant bullshit and lies being fed by the media. For all we know, the Levy stuff today is also bullshit. We know nothing and should trust nobody but Fergie.
One thing seems certain to me now. I think it’s highly unlikely that Berbatov will be a United player before the Newcastle game. I also think that Fergie should seriously look elsewhere. Yes I want Huntelaar but trust me folks, whether you have him as your first choice or not, he’s top quality for the price and he unlike Berbatov, Henry and Benzema can be had. Ajax isn’t putting up impenetrable walls and acting like total pricks. He’s good enough to play for us and he is only 24. Three, close to four years younger than Berbatov. For me that is good business. I do know this for sure, that we need a top striker and we need him right now.
Perhaps Fergie should just give up the battle because Levy doesn’t want to budge. He has made this very personal and has lacked professionalism in his conduct and demeanor. Fergie is a stubborn old coot and I’m afraid this stubborn streak is going to take us to the end of the transfer window and we will not get a striker at all. And then the Grognard is going to shift his anger and frustration away from Levy and Spurs and directly into the path of Sir Alex Ferguson. Yes I love and respect the man but he would have to be insane if he thinks we can play another season with only the two and one half forwards and the walking Mash Unit we have at present. Lets not forget that our only real prolific goal scorer and best player is out for over a month and he will take time to get in match shape and form upon his return. I see nobody on our team who can pick up the scoring slack until then. So Fergie better start seriously considering Plan B and quickly.
I knew that the deal was jinxed yesterday from all the posts dreaming of lineups and potential with him. I just knew it.
August 14th, 2008 at 18:22
@Grognard: I have been saying the same thing for days, we should have a plan B, surely its logic?
August 14th, 2008 at 18:23
I am officially done with pre-season. The worst thing that has happened is nothing, because nothing has happened. Talk talk talk talk talk. Buy Berbatov, or buy Huntelaar. Sell Saha. Just do something!!

@Jay wire: First off, we don’t have Berbatov yet and it looks more and more like we won’t period. Secondly, Manucho doesn’t even have a work permit yet and he may never have one. Thirdly, Saha is not depth unless you are counting full beds in the hospital. So although we have great depth in the back and in central midfield, we are a little thin without Ronaldo on the wing or wide midfield position and we are woefully thin up front. I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on Campbell or Welbeck because they aren’t up to the challenge yet, nor do I ever really believe they will be. But I could be and I hope to be wrong on that one.
Things were looking bright an rosy with Berbatov in the squad, but now I’m starting to get those famous and awfully unpopular negative vibrations again. DAMN!
August 14th, 2008 at 18:31
@Traverse: You forgot to mention the worst things about pre season, the Ronaldo saga and the fact he stole our two month long celebration from us.
August 14th, 2008 at 18:32
@Jezta: And he’s still in diapers and won’t be seen even in an exhibition match until next year at the very earliest. Me thinks we are digging rather deep to find oil.
August 14th, 2008 at 18:46
Grog, according to sky news (media whom you don’t want to hear from anymore lol) Real M have gone in for Huntelaar yesterday?. The very thing you didn’t want, the worst scenario for you. The truth is Grog, nobody knows what the heck is going on, because nearly all the media believed Berba was signing for us this week, and that’s unusual. Anyway, I think Barca being in for Berba is shite too, because they decided to keep Eto’o and Henry. To be honest Grog, it gets to the point in every United transfer, where United’s messing about just take the shine off whoever we eventually do sign. Many of us fans come to the point where we just don’t care anymore. I guess you are at that point Grog.
August 14th, 2008 at 18:52
@Stephen: Logic just doesn’t seem to be in the equation here and it’s become very frustrating. I’m not just saying buy a striker for the sake of buying a striker. I’m saying we are in desperate need of a good quality striker and we need him right fucking now. This should have been done a month ago. Everybody was saying to me relax, no business is done during the EUROS and if we ask for a player now the selling team will hike the price up. Sorry, but from where I saw things, you snooze, you lose. You wait until the deadline then they will even ask more money from you.
Sure I am not as experienced as Fergie and I don’t claim to be but I’m just following years of tradition and doing business and I have seen a pattern here. In Europe, teams try to get their transfer finished way before the deadline. In England many deals are made at the deadline but Fergie seems to go all over the place. There is no consistency with his buying of players. Sometimes it’s early, sometimes it’s late. What I do know is that right now we are in one of the most precarious positions we have ever been. We have our best player out for over a month, Nani out for two games, other players fighting injuries and viruses and Saha still flirting with nurses. We need a striker and we need him yesterday. It’s also incredibly dim witted to bring a player in on the deadline knowing that he has not trained or practiced with his new teammates nor gotten used to our system of play. And what is the point of waiting this long to sign a player when the price just went up? From where I’m sitting, Spurs don’t look to concerned over their striker or Arshavin problem. I think they are willing to take a chapter out of Fergie’s book and let Berbatov rot in the stands if he refuses to play for them. And they honestly have a right to do that. If Fergie was truly serious in getting Berby, he should have realized he couldn’t play the transparent waiting game with Levy, a man bent on revenge and bitter as Hell. Did he expect Levy’s hatred and animosity to go away just because he flashed some money in his face? My God Fergie has some arrogance and some chops to think that he can still do business with Spurs after they have accused him of everything from tapping up to stealing the Crown Jewels. And where is this going to leave the team and the fans at the end of August? Up Shit Creek without a paddle I fear. Come on Fergie, MAKE IT SO! Buy a striker we can all count on.
August 14th, 2008 at 19:04
And one more thing. Levy is all pissed at United for apparently say we were close to signing Berbatov. We never ever said that. Fergie in fact had only said that we were hoping to sign a striker before the deadline and that he had several options.
This brings up a major point. There is a culprit at work here who has been a major instigator in this feud because this culprit seems to be able to manipulate the pea brain of Daniel Levy into believing that Fergie has done many things that he clearly hasn’t. That culprit of course is the London media. It’s all of those cunts that were piggybacking each other the last few days and reporting the same nonsense without clear and direct quotes form United or from Fergie. What, we all of a sudden have the London media on our back pocket like Real Madrid has Marca in theirs? Somehow I rather seriously doubt that. If we lose out on this deal because Levy perceives United having tapped up a player and having reported being close to his signing, then I think United need to look at taking legal action against some of the media in England. They have potentially sabotaged a multi-million pound deal for United and have also seriously damaged their reputation in the game as well as their business relationship with a fellow EPL team. And all because they feed the gullible public with lies, rumors and innuendo without backing it up with any quotes or proof. And if they don’t have case in court, then Fergie should just meet with Levy, discuss things and clear the air, or better yet, beat the crap out of the muppet for being such a piece of shit.
August 14th, 2008 at 19:05
The whole Berbatov situation is getting dodgier by the fecking minute
A rotten egg in our face if hes not a Red devil by Friday.something tells me,our lifting the PL cup depends on this acquisition.
August 14th, 2008 at 19:08
@Grognard:
I think everyone is making a big fuss about nothing.
Fergie is always looking of ways to strengthen United. And it’s always stated that if we identify the right players, we will sign them.
I really don’t think Fergie waited so long on purpose.
Also the Ronaldo saga would have certainly affected our tranfer plans because imagine if he was sold…
I also really want that missing piece… And I think we should have faith in Fergie cause he will get us a striker (hopefully sooner rather than later)
And if we don’t sign someone right away… Hey it’s all GoooD
I mean we are the Champions right!
And Rooney and Tevez are fantastic together.
August 14th, 2008 at 19:12
Even if we only get someone by next week… We’ll be fine won’t we?
We definately are good enough!
August 14th, 2008 at 19:18
rooney has a history of long periods of bad form after an injury,in case you havn’t noticed.Even if hes back in the game afta the toon’s,wht makes u say he’d be banging ‘em in straight away.Better safe than sorry so FFS buy fecking berbatov NOW….
August 14th, 2008 at 19:21
If Tottenham have brought false charges against us, with insufficient proof, after telling the whole world that they had a years worth of evidence, then United should SUE Spurs and Levy for defamation. Wouldn’t that be a blast!.
August 14th, 2008 at 19:24
@MoYa: Yes but what happens if one of them goes down. Then what hmm? Depth is the true secret of success, and frankly we don’t have it up front. Especially without Ronaldo here. And it’s the duty of fans to make a fuss about nothing. We don’t get paid for our love and allegiance. We should then be allowed to vent or spleens to get satisfaction.
August 14th, 2008 at 19:44
Well I did say it. Wait for the official announcement. I mean,we are so desperate 4 a striker that we will believe a half witted Daily Telegraph article about Zlatan Ibrahimovic “joining Utd within 48 hrs”. No qoutes,no semblance of evidence whatsoever. I will start including Berbatov in my lineups and formations when i SEE and HEAR Saf’s lips moving to the tune of:”We are pleased 2 have signed Dimitar Berbatov on a 4 year deal. He is a class player and will bring in blah, blah and blah”. Anything else is rubbish. I think June to August period is the football media’s cash cow because they can say”Ronaldinho to Man City by Friday” and they are sold out.
August 14th, 2008 at 19:46
@Grognard:
Guess I gotta agree with you there.
) We should unleash our fury!
We will get a forward and hopefully we’ll be fine until then.
I think though we could channel our anger until deadline day… And if nothing happens (Gasp
Who knows… Maybe our army of dwarves and wounded will bring us another glorious double
August 14th, 2008 at 19:56
@MoYa: I wont bet on that
August 14th, 2008 at 19:58
And if Levy is such an a**hole, then surely Gill is his cousin. Gill said Ronaldo is not for sale. Real Mugs say, we offer this much we want Ronaldo. Ronaldo and his entire family tree cry that he should be allowed to leave. Sepp Blatter agrees and modern slavery translates into WAGES of over £100k. Process is repeated several times. Gill reports RM 4 tapping up his player, Uefa says rubbish. Levy says if u want Berbatov pay this much. Gill begins 2 bargain. Levy refuses to budge. Process is repeated several times. Levy reports MUFC 4 tapping up his player. FA says rubbish. Now Levy is an a**hole. Football is the best entertainment
August 14th, 2008 at 20:05
@Jay wire: The difference is for all to see mate,we are pushing spurs on the negotiation table, real scum tried pushing us in the damn press……
n got thier sorry a** whoped
August 14th, 2008 at 20:06
jay real never made a bid for ronny they just said that they want him. (and apparently negotiated a contract w/him) and wanted him to put in a transfer request which i dont think he ever foraly did.
we bid 20m and they said 30m for berbs
August 14th, 2008 at 20:09
formally
August 14th, 2008 at 20:18
I think the defense will be the key element to our side this season especially where attacking options will be missing. I believe that not losing goals and points because of our solid defensive line will keep us at the forefront of the title race even when attacking options are unavailable and we are pulling our hair out because the ball won’t go in the back of the net for us.
Here is what Ramos has to say on the Berba situation. Video on top right hand side.
If we get another great season from Rio and he stays healthy I will feel more comfortable and even more so if we were to sign Berba.
August 14th, 2008 at 20:22
Like the new changes to the site.
August 14th, 2008 at 20:28
Gator and WR 10- All im saying is Gill and Levy acted in almost the same manner when dealing with their respective transfer issues. Whether Real put in a bid, acted like clowns or not is of no essence. What im wondering is what makes Levy an a**hole in the Berbatov issue. Is it because he sees a great potential as a businessman to make as much profit as he can? Is it because he just doesnt want 2 sell his best star player because maybe he may want 2 push into the forbidden kingdom of Top Four? Or just doesnt want to sell to a league rival(Heinze to Liverpool anyone),esp one which did him over just 2 years ago?
August 14th, 2008 at 20:52
Fergie admitted that Real M did put one bid into United for Ronaldo though!.
August 14th, 2008 at 21:03
@Jay wire: The difference is tht spurs put a value on berbs,35mil or whteva, thus giving united space to declare interest n try and negotiate a deal. Can u actually tell me where in monetary figures is ronnie valued at by united. No u cant coz its not been done by the club, thus WTF wer real scum negotiating on….
and the fact tht gill or SAF neva mentioned berbs to the press n look at wat tht franco cunt was doin all summer.its as simple as…’gill can complain coz hes ryt in doin so.n levy can jus go feck himself’….peace!
August 14th, 2008 at 21:04
Jay Wire your comment abot Levy would have more credence with me, if he hadn’t sold Robbie Keane his club captain to L’Pool another TOP 4 club as you say. Keane was Spurs captain and as important a player as Berbatov. So that thought doesn’t really wash. Levy has a personal greviance on Fergie, he reported L’Pool as well, but never got personal and into the kind of name calling he did about Fergie. He was wrong on this issue about Fergie, and he knows it. He did behave like an arsehole for believing an article in THE SUN for feck sake. How gullible is he?.
August 14th, 2008 at 21:11
yea and i liked spurs too and with their new signings they look to be fun to watch but that shite was uncalled for and they look foolish now. as does fake madrid trying to keep robinho. lesson to be learned do not cross a titled man(sir.) especially ours.
August 14th, 2008 at 21:13
Shudn’t we,as united fans stop tryin to defend lousy morons, who hate united from deep inside their smelly a**es?
August 14th, 2008 at 21:14
@MoYa: Hobbits are capable of many things.
August 14th, 2008 at 21:16
@Jay wire: Whose side are you on anyway? Don’t you know you are supposed to turn a blind eye to anything that United do that is wrong or shady?
August 14th, 2008 at 21:19
@Jay wire: The difference is Real Madrid di not put in a valid bid and United did not use the press or try any kind of tapping up. So sorry but and many others don’t see your point or comparison at all? Who cares what Levy is saying? He’s a desperate man willing to say, do and accuse us of anything in order to save face with the Spurs faithful and with Ramos. The proof of our wrong doing is not there I’m afraid, and the league has told Spurs that they are dropping it unless they have proof. Where is it? So why so heavy handed with Gill and the club? I don’t think they deserve your criticism on this matter.
August 14th, 2008 at 21:21
@Craig Mc: Well said Craig. Levy is incredibly gullible and his evidence of any wrong doing comes from the tabloid papers in the country. How sick and pathetic is that? God give me strength.
August 14th, 2008 at 21:24
@Grognard: our persuit fo berba is way holier thn real scum’s fo ronnie…tht fo sure grog! doin somthin down ryt evil (real ronnie saga) is hell dodgier thn wrong or shady!
August 14th, 2008 at 21:28
Bloody hell, the latest tabloid gossip, is that United are signing Berba and David Villa for the grand sum of 60 million. And all this before the weekend. Who the feck makes this stuff up?.
August 14th, 2008 at 21:33
I am back! Holidays are over for me now(
), but what can you do. I enjoyed this summer, even though Ronaldo messed it up a little. But as long as I kept not caring, all went well. And if I may say, if you like the beach and hot girls go to Rimini for summer holidays. Its amazing, best place Ive ever been. The ocean is great, the sun is warm, the people are nice and the girls are hot!
Many things have happened while I was away. United have a a bid for Silva rejected, Berba is on the move to United(which I believe will happen in a short time), Solskjaer had his last game for United, thankfuly that game was broadcasted in Italy, Ronaldo has FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, spoken! Took a long time, dinnit!? I will never ever boo a player wearing a United shirt, but I will not look at Ronaldo the way I have done before anymore. I loved him a lot, and I just thought the love would grow stronger, but we all know what happend. He screwed up. If he plays to win with United, scores goals and sets them up, I will be happy. Hopefully he will only get better so Real can just watch in pain on the player they didnt get become better as time goes. Take that arse licking, money suckin, stupid ******** cunts!
Solskjear had a good game against Espanjol, I would have loved him to score, I loved the man, as a United fan and as a Norwegian. He will always be a 20LEgend!
I think Campbell will have a stormer of a season. I think he has proved that he is a good player and with his age he will only get better. If he gets some games, he will probably score some goals. And if Saha is injured(probably from making a sandwich), Rooney is out, and Berba is not coming, Frazier may well prove to be our saviour on some occasions. Just like againt Espanjol.
August 14th, 2008 at 21:36
hope the part bout berba is true
…villa can wait!
