Manchester United 08/09 Season Preview

I thought of doing a three part preview, but then decided against it because it could be rather long drawn and tiresome. Also, I’m sure, I wouldn’t want to bore you with a three part preview because I really don’t get the point of stretching a preview to three parts. So let’s see how I can preview the 08/09 season as short as possible.

The Attack:
This will be the most interesting part of our team. If — and at this point it looks like it’s safe to say, when — Berbatov arrives (along with Manucho) it will give our strike force a new look. Sir Alex Ferguson will be left with a happy conundrum — that of picking his best two strikers. Whilst the price paid for Berbatov ensures that he will get a sizeable chunk of appearances this season, the fees paid for Rooney, and that touted for Tevez, is no chicken feed either. It will be interesting to see how the boss picks his starting strikers.

When I talk about attack, I also refer to our wingers who play an important role in our interchangeable system. Early on, with a tough fixture list, an injured Ronaldo, a suspended Nani, and a new signing (Berbatov, hopefully) it will be quite tricky for us going forward. It could mean having to play Tevez on the wing if Rooney and Berbatov are to be pressed into action against Newcastle (as unlikely as it may sound.) The return of Park to training augurs well for the short term as the ageing Ryan Giggs will need to be on his better days early on.

Let’s make no pretense about it: the start of the season is going to be very challenging and tough. And the key to our fortunes for the rest of the season rests on how Fergie manages his depleted forward line for the first few games.

If we stay afloat till October when Ronaldo returns, it will give us the boost to switch gears. Or who knows… maybe our new signing will inspire us even before Ronaldo steps on the turf.
Player to watch out for: Carlos Tevez. The Argentine, to me, looks like he’ll have a stormer of a season.

The Midfield:
On paper, we have a midfield as good as any in the Premier League. Unfortunately, at the moment, Hargreaves remains crocked, and Anderson is in Beijing. So we will start with Carrick and Scholes in midfield. Which isn’t all that bad against the likes of Newcastle and Portsmouth. In fact, with Darren Fletcher I wouldn’t be too worried to get the job done against such opposition. But the return to full fitness of Hargreaves, and the return of Anderson will give our midfield the formidable look that it deserves.
Player to watch out for: I think this is going to be Michael Carrick’s season. But again, I also think Hargreaves will prove everyone why he was bought. For real.

The Defence:
It’s the one area I am least worried about. We have an outstanding first choice back four and an able backup. If Neville is fit, he will return to the starting XI. It would need a few games to gauge his value to the team, although it would be extremely unfair on Wes Brown. I don’t need to talk anymore about the peerless Rio, Vidic and Evra axis. I expect another stingy season from our defence — barring any injuries.
Player to watch out for: None in particular. Because they are all quality and they’ve all proved their pedigree.

Overall Performance and Tactics
I have a feeling that we’ll appear a little disjointed at the start of the season because of a lack of a settled line up in pre-season, and due to injuries and suspensions. But I have been wrong in the past. Queiroz’s absence will be quite a blow, however, Fergie’s experience will see through that problem. With the presence of a target man we will see more of a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Expectations:
It will sound rather strange to you all, but I generally am a low expectation fan. It gives me immense joy just to see my team trot out week-in, week-out and put on a display of some excellent attacking football. And as a Manchester United fan I am spoilt in that sense. The years of trophies have made me indebted to the lads and Fergie in particular, so I feel guilty if I expect Fergie to deliver me a treble or even another Premier League title. I think I will be satisfied with a trophy other than the Carling Cup. Don’t get me wrong — I will be gutted if we don’t win the Premiership. That’s something I always want because that’s what we spend the year waiting for. But I won’t call for heads to roll if we get pipped at the post. As long as we play good football, I think we can win the league title this year too. Personally, I’d like us to win the FA Cup because it’s been a while — I know, I know, we are a spoiled lot! I won’t be gutted if we didn’t win the Champions’ League, except of course, if we lost it to another English club in the final.

Predictions:
I think we’ll win either the League or the FA Cup. The presence of a good core of youth will get us far into the Carling Cup competition (and I think we’ll win it this time.) And we might make it as far as the semis of the Champions’ League.

So that’s the preview for the season. Hopefully you found it terrible reading (especially my expectations and predictions for the new season). I am excited about the new season and I hope you are too. Fasten your seat belts with only two more days to go! Hopefully we at Red Rants can help you along another roller coaster season.

Come on you Reds!

  • @Jay wire:

Youth players are difficulty to deal with. If they arent able to be thrust immediately into a team you have a problem. Do you send them out on loan and never have them around to fill in where needed and impress, do you keep them at the club but limit their playing time. Rossi if he could have been patient a bit longer would have got his chance, Pique needed games really but in central defence its tough to give players that chance, especially when you have such a good partnership like the one that rio and vidic have

  • Remember what I said a couple of days ago about Berbatov coming? I said we should not celebrate and talk about it like it was a done deal because we were falling in to media trap once again. An guess what? I was right yet again. Problem is, I know better and yet I still let my imagination get away with the thought of of us playing with this player.

Really, we all should have known better. Daniel Levy is a cunt and a totally bitter and angry SOB. I think he is determined to swindle the club for much more than Berbatov is worth. Yesterday I reported late having heard that Berbatov practiced with Spurs yesterday. Before this new Levy stuff came out, I knew right then and there that this deal was in serious jeopardy and that we stood a very good chance of not getting the player.

I’m not sure what in God’s name is going on here but I do know this, we should never ever ever take any rumors from any of these papers seriously again. And if we do, we are fools. How many times do we need to get our hearts broken and our souls embarrassed by the constant bullshit and lies being fed by the media. For all we know, the Levy stuff today is also bullshit. We know nothing and should trust nobody but Fergie.

One thing seems certain to me now. I think it’s highly unlikely that Berbatov will be a United player before the Newcastle game. I also think that Fergie should seriously look elsewhere. Yes I want Huntelaar but trust me folks, whether you have him as your first choice or not, he’s top quality for the price and he unlike Berbatov, Henry and Benzema can be had. Ajax isn’t putting up impenetrable walls and acting like total pricks. He’s good enough to play for us and he is only 24. Three, close to four years younger than Berbatov. For me that is good business. I do know this for sure, that we need a top striker and we need him right now.

Perhaps Fergie should just give up the battle because Levy doesn’t want to budge. He has made this very personal and has lacked professionalism in his conduct and demeanor. Fergie is a stubborn old coot and I’m afraid this stubborn streak is going to take us to the end of the transfer window and we will not get a striker at all. And then the Grognard is going to shift his anger and frustration away from Levy and Spurs and directly into the path of Sir Alex Ferguson. Yes I love and respect the man but he would have to be insane if he thinks we can play another season with only the two and one half forwards and the walking Mash Unit we have at present. Lets not forget that our only real prolific goal scorer and best player is out for over a month and he will take time to get in match shape and form upon his return. I see nobody on our team who can pick up the scoring slack until then. So Fergie better start seriously considering Plan B and quickly.

I knew that the deal was jinxed yesterday from all the posts dreaming of lineups and potential with him. I just knew it.

  • I am officially done with pre-season. The worst thing that has happened is nothing, because nothing has happened. Talk talk talk talk talk. Buy Berbatov, or buy Huntelaar. Sell Saha. Just do something!!

  • @Jay wire: First off, we don’t have Berbatov yet and it looks more and more like we won’t period. Secondly, Manucho doesn’t even have a work permit yet and he may never have one. Thirdly, Saha is not depth unless you are counting full beds in the hospital. So although we have great depth in the back and in central midfield, we are a little thin without Ronaldo on the wing or wide midfield position and we are woefully thin up front. I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on Campbell or Welbeck because they aren’t up to the challenge yet, nor do I ever really believe they will be. But I could be and I hope to be wrong on that one.

Things were looking bright an rosy with Berbatov in the squad, but now I’m starting to get those famous and awfully unpopular negative vibrations again. DAMN!

  • Grog, according to sky news (media whom you don’t want to hear from anymore lol) Real M have gone in for Huntelaar yesterday?. The very thing you didn’t want, the worst scenario for you. The truth is Grog, nobody knows what the heck is going on, because nearly all the media believed Berba was signing for us this week, and that’s unusual. Anyway, I think Barca being in for Berba is shite too, because they decided to keep Eto’o and Henry. To be honest Grog, it gets to the point in every United transfer, where United’s messing about just take the shine off whoever we eventually do sign. Many of us fans come to the point where we just don’t care anymore. I guess you are at that point Grog.

  • @Stephen: Logic just doesn’t seem to be in the equation here and it’s become very frustrating. I’m not just saying buy a striker for the sake of buying a striker. I’m saying we are in desperate need of a good quality striker and we need him right fucking now. This should have been done a month ago. Everybody was saying to me relax, no business is done during the EUROS and if we ask for a player now the selling team will hike the price up. Sorry, but from where I saw things, you snooze, you lose. You wait until the deadline then they will even ask more money from you.

Sure I am not as experienced as Fergie and I don’t claim to be but I’m just following years of tradition and doing business and I have seen a pattern here. In Europe, teams try to get their transfer finished way before the deadline. In England many deals are made at the deadline but Fergie seems to go all over the place. There is no consistency with his buying of players. Sometimes it’s early, sometimes it’s late. What I do know is that right now we are in one of the most precarious positions we have ever been. We have our best player out for over a month, Nani out for two games, other players fighting injuries and viruses and Saha still flirting with nurses. We need a striker and we need him yesterday. It’s also incredibly dim witted to bring a player in on the deadline knowing that he has not trained or practiced with his new teammates nor gotten used to our system of play. And what is the point of waiting this long to sign a player when the price just went up? From where I’m sitting, Spurs don’t look to concerned over their striker or Arshavin problem. I think they are willing to take a chapter out of Fergie’s book and let Berbatov rot in the stands if he refuses to play for them. And they honestly have a right to do that. If Fergie was truly serious in getting Berby, he should have realized he couldn’t play the transparent waiting game with Levy, a man bent on revenge and bitter as Hell. Did he expect Levy’s hatred and animosity to go away just because he flashed some money in his face? My God Fergie has some arrogance and some chops to think that he can still do business with Spurs after they have accused him of everything from tapping up to stealing the Crown Jewels. And where is this going to leave the team and the fans at the end of August? Up Shit Creek without a paddle I fear. Come on Fergie, MAKE IT SO! Buy a striker we can all count on.

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • And one more thing. Levy is all pissed at United for apparently say we were close to signing Berbatov. We never ever said that. Fergie in fact had only said that we were hoping to sign a striker before the deadline and that he had several options.

This brings up a major point. There is a culprit at work here who has been a major instigator in this feud because this culprit seems to be able to manipulate the pea brain of Daniel Levy into believing that Fergie has done many things that he clearly hasn’t. That culprit of course is the London media. It’s all of those cunts that were piggybacking each other the last few days and reporting the same nonsense without clear and direct quotes form United or from Fergie. What, we all of a sudden have the London media on our back pocket like Real Madrid has Marca in theirs? Somehow I rather seriously doubt that. If we lose out on this deal because Levy perceives United having tapped up a player and having reported being close to his signing, then I think United need to look at taking legal action against some of the media in England. They have potentially sabotaged a multi-million pound deal for United and have also seriously damaged their reputation in the game as well as their business relationship with a fellow EPL team. And all because they feed the gullible public with lies, rumors and innuendo without backing it up with any quotes or proof. And if they don’t have case in court, then Fergie should just meet with Levy, discuss things and clear the air, or better yet, beat the crap out of the muppet for being such a piece of shit.

I think everyone is making a big fuss about nothing.
Fergie is always looking of ways to strengthen United. And it’s always stated that if we identify the right players, we will sign them.
I really don’t think Fergie waited so long on purpose.
Also the Ronaldo saga would have certainly affected our tranfer plans because imagine if he was sold…

I also really want that missing piece… And I think we should have faith in Fergie cause he will get us a striker (hopefully sooner rather than later)

And if we don’t sign someone right away… Hey it’s all GoooD
I mean we are the Champions right!
And Rooney and Tevez are fantastic together.

And it’s the duty of fans to make a fuss about nothing. We don’t get paid for our love and allegiance. We should then be allowed to vent or spleens to get satisfaction.

  • Well I did say it. Wait for the official announcement. I mean,we are so desperate 4 a striker that we will believe a half witted Daily Telegraph article about Zlatan Ibrahimovic “joining Utd within 48 hrs”. No qoutes,no semblance of evidence whatsoever. I will start including Berbatov in my lineups and formations when i SEE and HEAR Saf’s lips moving to the tune of:”We are pleased 2 have signed Dimitar Berbatov on a 4 year deal. He is a class player and will bring in blah, blah and blah”. Anything else is rubbish. I think June to August period is the football media’s cash cow because they can say”Ronaldinho to Man City by Friday” and they are sold out.

Ronaldo and his entire family tree cry that he should be allowed to leave. Sepp Blatter agrees and modern slavery translates into WAGES of over £100k. Process is repeated several times. Gill reports RM 4 tapping up his player, Uefa says rubbish. Levy says if u want Berbatov pay this much. Gill begins 2 bargain. Levy refuses to budge. Process is repeated several times. • I think the defense will be the key element to our side this season especially where attacking options will be missing. I believe that not losing goals and points because of our solid defensive line will keep us at the forefront of the title race even when attacking options are unavailable and we are pulling our hair out because the ball won’t go in the back of the net for us.
If we get another great season from Rio and he stays healthy I will feel more comfortable and even more so if we were to sign Berba.

Whether Real put in a bid, acted like clowns or not is of no essence. What im wondering is what makes Levy an a**hole in the Berbatov issue. Is it because he sees a great potential as a businessman to make as much profit as he can? Is it because he just doesnt want 2 sell his best star player because maybe he may want 2 push into the forbidden kingdom of Top Four? Or just doesnt want to sell to a league rival(Heinze to Liverpool anyone),esp one which did him over just 2 years ago?

Keane was Spurs captain and as important a player as Berbatov. So that thought doesn’t really wash. Levy has a personal greviance on Fergie, he reported L’Pool as well, but never got personal and into the kind of name calling he did about Fergie. • I am back! Holidays are over for me now( ), but what can you do. I enjoyed this summer, even though Ronaldo messed it up a little. But as long as I kept not caring, all went well. And if I may say, if you like the beach and hot girls go to Rimini for summer holidays. Its amazing, best place Ive ever been. The ocean is great, the sun is warm, the people are nice and the girls are hot!
Many things have happened while I was away. United have a a bid for Silva rejected, Berba is on the move to United(which I believe will happen in a short time), Solskjaer had his last game for United, thankfuly that game was broadcasted in Italy, Ronaldo has FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, FINALLY, spoken! Took a long time, dinnit!? I will never ever boo a player wearing a United shirt, but I will not look at Ronaldo the way I have done before anymore. I loved him a lot, and I just thought the love would grow stronger, but we all know what happend. He screwed up. If he plays to win with United, scores goals and sets them up, I will be happy. Hopefully he will only get better so Real can just watch in pain on the player they didnt get become better as time goes. Take that arse licking, money suckin, stupid ******** cunts!
Solskjear had a good game against Espanjol, I would have loved him to score, I loved the man, as a United fan and as a Norwegian. He will always be a 20LEgend!
I think Campbell will have a stormer of a season. I think he has proved that he is a good player and with his age he will only get better. If he gets some games, he will probably score some goals. And if Saha is injured(probably from making a sandwich), Rooney is out, and Berba is not coming, Frazier may well prove to be our saviour on some occasions. Just like againt Espanjol.

  • RR- Love what you have done with this site! Looks awsome.
My predictions for the 2008/09 season: I belive that we will sign at least one attackier. If not a striker, a winger or a CF. Villa is the player I want most, but I will be heppy if Berba or Benzema come in. But not Henry. Never liked him, never will! Rooney will have the season of his life, he just needs to score more goals. If he learns a little from Ole then all will be great. His positioning and movement is already as good as it can become for a player, he just needs to take those 100% chances. And he will, I am sure.
Along with Rooney, I also think Tevez and Anderson will be important. Both are terriers, strong and fast, skillful, its just that Anderson is defensivly better than Carltio and that Tevez knows that goals are scored when the ball hits the back of the net, not 20 yards wide. :-D
I believe this will be the first team of 2008/09: VDS; Neville, Rio, Vidic, Evra; Anderson, Carrick; Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez/Nani; Berbatov.

Second team: TK; Rafael, Brown, Evans, Silvestre; Nani, Hargreaves, Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs; Saha

Player of the season: Wayne Rooney
Young player of the season: Anderson
Trophies won when the season ends: Charity Shield, UEFA super cup, Premier League, Carling cup, FA cup.
    Champions League adventure ends: Semi-finals.
I watch United cause I enjoy it. I get sad when they lose, frustrated when they spurn chance after chance after chance, delighted when they score and scream like a crazy, drunken monkey when they win a trophy. Wheather its the CL or the Carling cup, a trophy is a trpohy, you have to work hard for it! I am optimistic when it comes to United and other aspects in life, so I think they will end the season with 5 trophies out of 7. They have won 1 already, they just have to beat Zenit to win another one, the youngsters are becoming better so the CC will be interesting, the League is always tough, but we are the best, and we havent won the FA cup in a looong time(2004).

Well I wouldn’t mind being 1-0 merchants for the first few games until everyone is fit or back again. I decided to BELIEVE that even with our present squad, we will just have to find a goal from somewhere.
