Manchester United get Aon Money

Tag: Manchester United News @ 3:31 am

As reported in most dailies around, United have finally got a shirt sponsor on board to replace AIG. What’s with the club’s recent obsession with insurance companies, really? I guess the answer is £s;80m

Anyway, the facts…

Aon Corporation, founded in 1919 is a firm that specializes in insurance and risk management; which sounds to me like saving the insurance companies when they do something potty. Their 2007 revenue was over $7bn and, like we’d come to expect from most big insurance companies, they come with the baggage of being a successful insurance corporation.

Despite the grim sight of yet another insurance company adorning our shirt, the deal as such is good news for us. It’s a £20m-a-year for four years. That trumps any other shirt deal with any other football club. And is about £6m higher a year than our previous deal.

All round a good business deal. Which is all I can say for it. Now Nike can work on incorporating the new logo [Scott's got a preview] and come up with a hideously ugly 2009/10 kit. Sigh!

  • @MoYa: Hey is that a veiled insult or a compliments. :???:  Don’t worry, I get your drift.

  • @MoYa: True but seriously, I would never count the minutes played in a Carling Cup competition. Surrounded by kids and playing does not count for shite with me. In the EPL and CL, his role was very diminished.

  • @MoYa: I will not rest and will not be happy as a United fan until two things happen. Until Anderson is sold and until Huntelaar is bought. So I guess I have many years of misery to look forward to.

  • @Dan: Louis Saha. What a player! (when fit  )

  • We get away with a lightweight central midfield most of the time because we are so damn strong in all the other positions and our midfield usually does just enough to break up play and get the ball to the players who make our team tick. But put our midfield up against a good midfield like Pool or Barcelona and we get overrun and cannot keep the ball.

Having Valencia and Benzema is no good if we cannot get the ball to them. Against Barcelona we had Tevez, Berbatov, Rooney and Ronaldo: £150 million worth of talent and we didn’t manage a single goal.

Im with Grognard, Hargreaves is going to be injury prone for life-damn shame but part of the game. We need to replace him because Fletcher should be used as an extra in a three man midfield not a partner for Carrick long term.

By the way anyone know anyone about this Dodo-central defender we signed for £5 million. The best brazilian youth defender.

  • @Grognard: We have been linked with Huntelaar before and Real seem to be going crazy on a transfer front, so who knows, perhaps somehow he ends up with us. Also he doesn’t fit their galactico billing.
At this moment I would be pleased if we signed any noteworthy striker.

  • @colver: Apparently he’s the best defensive Brazilian prospect. Currently a left back, but rumoured that we gonna mould him inti a centre back.
Haven’t found much info on him as he hasn’t even played a senior game for his club.

  • @Traverse: @Grognard:
Thanks for your replies. I did a bit of digging myself and found out that the Glazers and this is what I found.

In July 2006 the club announced a refinancing package. The debt taken on by the Glazers to finance the club was split between the club and the family, approximately £256 million is secured against Manchester United’s assets.[9] The total amount will be £660 million, on which interest payments will be £62 million a year. The club stated, “The value of Manchester United has increased in the last year, which is why lenders want to invest in the club… ‘This move represents good housekeeping and it ensures that Sir Alex Ferguson will be provided with sufficient funds to compete in the transfer market.” The Manchester United Supporters Trust responded, “‘The amount of money needed to be repaid overall is huge… ‘The interest payment is one thing but what about the actual £660million? It is difficult to see how these sums can be reached without significant increases in ticket prices, which, as we always suspected, means the fans will effectively be paying for someone to borrow money to own their club.”[10][11] Under the terms of Glazer’s financing, in the event that Glazer is unable to repay bondholders, majority control of Manchester United will pass to three New York hedge funds in August 2010. The three hedge funds are Citadel, Och-Ziff Capital Management Group and Perry Capital.

    Sounds bad.

  • Anyone else got the feeling of an underwhelming transfer dealings from us in the silly season?

    i) A bid for Carlos Tevez.
ii) Frazier Cambell leaving – ok, good money for a home grown player, but I’m confident he’ll develop in a player at least as good as D.Bent. Everytime he played a full season with a team he achieved 15+ goals.
iii) Valencia signing. I’m divided. I admit that I didn’t see much of him, but I nevetr heard he was world-class.He didn’t play particularly well against us. I don’t want another utility player like Park, not at that price, and I hoped for Nani being given a fair run in the side as well as seeing Ljajic.
iv) No word of us being remotely interested in a new CM or DM, the real area where we need serious improvement. The only name in world football touted as the next big thing at CM is Hernanes.
    v) It looks like Ronaldo has a greater chance of staying at OT next season, compared to the same situation we were in last year. Should he stay, then it’s more than likely Rooney’s development will once again be sacrificed.

And looking at all the players on the market, I don’t feel there’s really any player that can make me get real excited of him joining us… Well, Ribery, but I’ve lost hope for him to come…

On another note: Anyone think the EPL really needs Mario Balotelli? I don’t think he’s as good as the Italian media paint him to be, but for sheer entertainment value – and especially controversy – he’d give us stuff to talk about. :) Just don’t come to Man Utd please!

  • @colver: What I can never get my head around Colver, is that SAF could have had so many of his buys soooo much cheaper IF he had bought quicker, but United always LOSE so much money BECAUSE they are too feckin slow to pick up the bargains when they present themselves. Carrick was bought by spurs for like 3-4 million, when West ham were in trouble, Lampard and Joe Cole were bought on the cheap for Chelski for the same reasons, and Rio went to leads for a very reasonable fee. SAF just delays and delays and it costs United in the end. Look what happened with Berbatov. United are the benefactors to so many other teams, because we don’t move when the climate is good. Sorry but that is the truth Bro.

  • @NicoQB: I also have that feeling, but at the same time hey look it’s still very early days. I’m actually surprised we already put in a bid for Valencia. Probably because Real are also after him.

And Balotelli is a serious talent, especially considering his age. Physically he’s gonna be awesome. And the lad certainly has no confidence issues. If only his attitude was right he would be much better. Lol but I agree he is entertaining and certainly gets under oppositions skin.

  • Who thinks we should just say FUCK it, we have a lot of good players on our books, what we need is a genious coach, with tactical brilliance, who can bring along players and ENHANCE their performances greatly. A great coach can have the team players thinking they are feckin Titans, the worlds best players. We need that more than anything!

  • Oh and in case anybody thinks I am dissing SAF, NOT REALLY, I just think that SAF has so many responsibilities other than wet nursing the lads, sooooo much he is responsible for, that he looks to the backing staff to work with the lads. I personally feel, that even though we won a good few trophies this season, we DIDN’T do it with concinving football. Our play has become pedestrian and boring in many a game, and I still cannot get over the NON performance in Rome. We were like a team in the relegation – bottom of team stuff. Although I perhaps do a dis-service to those lower based teams, because they have showed more fight than our lot did in Rome. I cannot believe what happened, and Barca were NOT as good as everyone is making them out to be. We made them look fuckin Herculean. I just can’t get past it, no matter how much I try!

  • @UnitedUnited: I was unaware of this 2010 clause. Does that mean that if Glazer does not pay back the full £600mil loan by next year he loses control of the club? Sounds like fucking good news to me.

That would mean that in August next year, the Glazers will disappear, and we will become free of debt, but owned by the hedgefunds whose money the debt it.

This means they will then sell the club, and the sale money is how the hedgefunds recoup their money.

The big question in this is ‘Why the fuck did the Glazers buy us in the first place?’. Have they been taking an almighty slice of our profits for their coffers each year? If so this way they have made a whole chunk of money for doing essentially nothing. Smart on their part, but how the hell they passed the Premier Leagues ‘Fit and proper person test’ is beyond me. It would also explain why they let Gill run most things and stay the hell away, signing cheques when they need to.

  • @Dan: If Benzema signs people are going to expect huge feats from him – with the risk of getting disappointed. While a great player, I think that his talent is reeally comparable to that of Saha. Except that he’s way much fitter!
As for Ribery I’m positive that he would be able to produce the kind of performances that expectations from his huge transfer would command. He’s that good.

    @RedDevilEddy: :lol: :lol:

@Traverse: If he ever scores!!!

@MoYa: I wonder if Balotelli shouldn’t have Balotelli been a striker… Looking at him ou wouldnt guess he just out of he’s teens. I hope Welbeck or Macheda end up witha similar build. Apart from sheer talent , Balotelli is eerily similar to Ronaldo in a way.

    It’s crazy that Balotelli’s only 18… Scary Shit:shock:
It would be awesome if they do, they both are tall so just hope they fill up properly. I read somewhere where Fergie was praising both of them and said he has high hopes of Welbeck filling up really well… That would be awesome, would give us some good options what we lack.
I don’t even think Ronaldo was that cocky at Balotelli’s age.

I noticed this past season that Fergie played Ando in a more attacking role which is obviously his more natural game. At times he has tried to over elaborate with his passing  If he keeps things more simple like Iniesta or Xavi he will improve immensely.
Only due to injuries an lack of options when Fergie has played him in a defensive role he hasn’t been as impressive as before, but given that shouldn’t be his role.

Why buy useless Pompey or Liverpool when United is a worldwide brand that sells and that can seat 75,000 in their stadium with private boxes? • @Craig Mc: So the last twenty years counts for squat with you eh Bro? Jeez how quickly we are ready to mutiny and throw our skipper overboard. I may not agree with Fergie all the time but truthfully, as long as he has been in charge, we have always contended and always been in the thick of it. That’s all you can ask. How quickly we forget that he delivered us to the promise land in Europe last year and has led us to over 20 major trophies for this club. Would you rather be a Liverpool supporter and put your faith in a fat waiter? Disagree with Fergie when you feel it’s earned or valid but lets respect the man for what he has done for us and temper our satisfaction at times with a little faith in the old guy. God knows he has earned it.

Also, the Glazer’s bought us for the reason all US billionaires by sports teams. Ego and mostly it’s a tax write off. Little did they expect the collapse of the economy.

Yet I cannot just say I appreciate his team formations and tactics these last season just for the sake of it. I am not happy with the boring pedestrian football we have lapsed into, or our lack of potency to score goals, and not be able to put teams away within 90 minutes in big games. I am also deeply embarrased about our CL performance in Rome. Sorry to disappoint you, but I am not going to say nice, but untrue things, just to please Red Rich or anyone else who is happy with the way our team played the game this last year!

If you think I’m wrong you can certainly cite the posts that gave you this impression!!

My gist, was that SAF didn’t have faith in his back 4, so he allowed the MF to go wanting – and that, ultimately cost us the game.

  • @johnsom33: I agree with almost all you say, the buying and selling of sports franchises has become an elite pass time for wealthier investors!

The scenario that may follow, could include the Arabs, but I reckon that the Glaziers might stand pat, until a time when their investment has provided an adequate incentive for their debtors to raise their eyebrows!!

Could be a long, hard future. Unless, of course, you have a cool, .75bil to snap up this monster!!

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @johnsom33: But they wont because of the debt. Cause the Glazers moved the debt from their accounts to the United accounts, it’s United’s debt, not theirs. If they were to sell us for say £800mil, they would pocket all of that and the buyer would be buying a club with £600mil of debt on its books. They would then also have to pay that off. It’s just far too expensive. It was cheaper for Abu Dhabi United group to buy City, and spend hundreds of millions on transfers than just buy United!

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Agree With that, I do. Can’t see anyone buying off the club in the near future.. Btw, why is that none of the top clubs are interested in signing up Moutinho? He’s a prodigy by my reckoning, good enough to make the portugal national squad anyway for the euro, he could develop very well..

Grog was supporting SAF you see, and attributed his supporting of SAF to some debate he had going with you, that he had been criticising SAF or something. I said, I was just going to be writing nice things about SAF if I felt strongly about something, to satisfy you, or anybody else. Anyway RedRich I have no beef with you, or Grog.
