Manchester United vs Chelsea: Preview
Its crunch time in the Premier League with Chelsea coming to Old Trafford to face a Manchester United side somewhat shell-shocked from a last minute defeat against Bayern Munich, a fact the Blues will be well aware of and will of course look to exploit, not to mention the injury to a certain striker.
A tough match will ensue as the top two in the Premier League go head to head on Saturday afternoon. Manchester United will look to their defensive record at home, conceding only 9 goals in the league, but this will no doubt be tested by Chelsea who coincidentally have the most potent attack, scoring 82 goals in the 32 league games played so far.
The United line up should remain fair consistent with recent weeks, as per usual Edwin van der Sar will take up his place between the sticks. In front of the Dutchman will be Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, with Patrice Evra on the left and either Gary Neville or Rafael on the right. The club captain has been in reasonable form but has played the last nine matches, so it could be time he gets a breather.
John O’Shea could also be in line for a seat on the bench after returning to training but Wes Brown is still out with a metatarsal injury.
Of John O’Shea, Ferguson said, “John O’Shea and Owen Hargreaves have trained very well with the first team.
“They are not far away and I may use one of them as substitute tomorrow and the other on Wednesday.
“John O’Shea in particular has done a lot of work. The boy has come on terrifically well in the last two or three weeks.
“If I include one tomorrow and one on Wednesday it will give them the confidence that they are back.
“That is what they need.”
You did read correctly Owen Hargreaves may well be back on the bench come Saturday. It is likely he won’t get on the pitch but if selected as a substitute his confidence will be boosted no end.
A five-man midfield will again be deployed, Paul Scholes, Darren Fletcher and Ji-Sung Park should line up in the middle, with the South Korean acting as a defensive attacking midfielder assigned the task of keeping Frank Lampard quiet, while offering support to the front players. Michael Carrick should be dropped after a number of ineffectual performances.
They will be flanked by Nani on the left and Antonio Valencia on the right.
Many of you may have read that Wayne Rooney is injured. He has minor ligament damage in his ankle but should be back in a couple of weeks. All this means, Dimitar Berbatov will lead the line against Chelsea, though Sir Alex Ferguson is confident the Bulgarian can cope,
“Berbatov’s form has come great at the right time,” the United boss said.
“It is always hard to leave a player of his ability out of important games, and I am sure he can thrive on the responsibility. He is experienced enough to be able to handle that.”
Expect also, to see some of Federico Macheda, Sir Alex has confirmed he will play a part in the coming weeks,
“He is a terrific talent and can certainly play a big part,” Ferguson said.
“He was sub at Bolton, he will be sub again tomorrow [against Chelsea] and he will be sub on Wednesday [against Bayern].”
Chelsea will be going into the match after having a full week to prepare and rest ahead of what could prove to be a title decider, though they do have injury worries of their own.
Michael Essien, Ashley Cole, Ricardo Carvalho and Jose Bosingwa are all still unavailable, while Branislav Ivanovic is out with a knee problem. Didier Drogba has recovered from a knee complaint and will start against the Champions.
Interestingly though, Chelsea do seem to play with a lot more vigour and freedom when the Ivorian is not in the side. He has not been part of the two seven goal thrashing Chelsea have dished out this season and having Nicolas Anelka up-front on his own frees Frank Lampard to get forward and score, something he does with alarming regularity. Something Carlo Ancelotti commented on:
“Lampard is a very dangerous midfielder,” stated Ancelotti. “It is difficult to block him because he is a very dynamic player and he gets into the box at the right moment.
“He is a midfielder who scores 20 goals every season and he is unique in that respect. I was surprised by him. I knew him but not with the timing into the box and that is his most important quality.”
Ominous for Chelsea is their coach Carlo Ancelotti who has won five of his last six meetings with Sir Alex Ferguson. While United have lost three of the four league games that have followed European away games this season.
The tightest of margins separate these two sides and if Chelsea win they will have their Premier League fate in their own hands once more. United will have to forget the defeat against Bayern quickly and move on as we are entering a critical stage of the season where complacency is not an option.
On a more positive note, for those worried about the loss of Wayne Rooney, United have won their last nine league games without Rooney so lets hope that trend continues tomorrow.
Prediction: 1-1 Draw
Probable Line Up: van der Sar, Evra, Ferdinand, Vidic, Neville; Nani, Scholes, Fletcher, Park, Valencia; Berbatov

@Owen: I think we’l win. I hate being labelled a one man team which we have been for the last few years and just because rooney is out does not mean its over. Fletcher has been as important for us as rooney and nani and valencia have been very good also. Plus with our defense starting to shape up (evra excluded tuesday evening)I think we’l be alright.
I’d be more concerned if carrick is playing because he really has been a flat tyre for us recently. Hopefully he ain’t playing tomorrow cos I dont think he’d be able to handle chelsea’s thug tactics.

@Owen: Really why, what we lost and performed badly in one game fuck me people are so negative fuck off and support someone else I am from Manchester been a season ticket holder for twelve years, seen United under Atkinson with Colin and Terry Gibson, Ralph Milne, John Gidman ect I see people calling the greatest manager this club ever had calling him an “old Scottish Wanker” and hold my head in my hands, even if we win fuck all this season, get relegated, I will be back will you??

Also all the mugs on this site who have called Rooney over rated ect, well you have your wish he is out of the most crucial part of the season, 34 goals a true love for the club maybe isn’t enough???!!, But being from Brazil and having dreadlocks and scoring one goal in three years or being from Portugal and constantly diving and being totally inconsistant is what United fans want?
Mr Berbatov over to you…………….

@Stephen: Your not the only one who would be there IF United were relegated Stephen – the season they were relegated when Denis Law CRIED for putting us down, my Dad and Uncles were all there singing on the terraces – soooooooooooo. I may say what I feel about certain players who you happen to love, when they were in fact poor in the 1st third or more of the season, but to suggest anybody wished injury on somebody, that is just so unbelieveable. Anyway, now as many have said we will finally find out whether Berba and others can step up and DO IT in the big games. Also Rooney didn’t get those 34 goals you are shouting about without all the other players big contribution making sure the play went thru him!

@Hiram Gakembu: Berba may be an actor on the big stage in the next two games, but he will not shine in his role UNLESS the supporting players are providing the ammunition for him! As a certain Portuguese did for him at Bolton, whether Stephen likes it or not. Same with Rooney’s away goal in Munich, an inswinging ball into the area with pace that one of the Munich players couldn’t control though he tried to stop it getting to Rooney!

@CraigMc: You are not a fan of Rooney mate, we all know that you even partly blamed Rooney for the deflected freekick Bro
, you have a massive issue with him which from you I find odd, being a Manc and understanding the culture of the club which many on this site will never know.
Also people on this site were worshipping the greasy twat Ronaldo for scoring all the goals he did and all credit to him but he did fuck all else, we need to give Rooney more, he is United Roanldo is Real.
I support my club, I am no single player but I love players who bleed read not white and use us as a feeder.

Yep it is crunch time for Berbatov. People complain he never gets to play in the big games. Well the next two games will be the biggest in his life determining whether we win any trophies this season. Rooney has been scoring basically a goal a game and that is what we are going to need from Berbatov.
And Stephen I agree with your assessment of Anderson and Nani. Anderson has been terrible while with Nani you just do not know if he is going to show up or not. When he does he is a matchwinner. When he doesn’t it can be like playing with ten men.
Carrick has been a huge disappointment and he is only keeping his place in the side because there is no-one else. Id take a Hargreaves who hasn’t played in years to a Carrick on current form and hopefully he will be back at his best in time for the City game.
Im pissed Hargreaves won’t be available for the Bayern game. In his absence Id prefer a midfield of Park, Fletcher and Giggs/Scholes. I want Valencia and Nani on the flanks and I want them cutting inside and getting some shots in.

Time has come 4 Dimi to prove his 30M Price tag. He is intelligent and flashy but utterly slow/lazy. Problem is he can’t run to those Scholes thru passes nor Valencia crosses. He needs a supporting striker like Giggs. Him alone upfront wil be like throwing onto the ring a headless cock in a cockfight. SAF must be very careful how he handles the next 2 games as his dreams of surpassing Liverpool to the historical 19th title & winning another Uefa CL could end up in flames by the man he bought dearly from Spurs 2 seasons ago.

@Stephen: I have no idea what you are talking about Stephen, and you don’t have to be a Manc to be a club loyalist at United – try Best, Law, Charlton, Crerand etc of the old school of greats, and Fletcher, Van Der Sar, Evra, O’Shea, Keane, etc etc of the later school! So pray tell me what you are really saying Stephen,

I’m expecting a midfield of Valencia, Fletcher, Hargreaves, Park and Nani. Scholes and Carrick are too slow and not able to handle Chelsea. Berba alone up front and our standard back four. I just have a gut feeling Hargo is going to start tomorrow over Carrick. Fergie has got have figured out that Carrick has been sleep walking of late as well as being bloody invisible. He needs to sit down a bit and realize that his future is on the line with these cowardly displays where he seems to not want to get involved in the game and looks for the safe haven instead.

1> Fergie will give a new 4 year contract to Berbatona
OR
2> Juventus/Valencia have made an offer of 15 million for Berba and has been accepted by SAF

Main threat will come from Malouda. He will give all the problems to RedNev and will be very tough to handle. So Valencia’s all energy will go down in tracking back mainly. It will be Nani only as the attacking option to support Berba.Just Hope Fergie starts Carrick in advanced position.Otherwise Berbatov will become too isolated and Terry will be more than enough to keep him in his pocket.

@Stephen: I am not a fan of Rooney playing like he was at the 1st thrid of our season – and of his blaming all the players around him (until just recently) for his shortfalls. I blamed him for the free kick because he shouldn’t have been in that wall mate, he was supposed to be our main outlet, and if you were honest Stephen you would know that is so.

@Stephen: If persons from Manchester only are loyal to Man Utd then why dont you all from the city contributes a lot and do some mirracle to save the club. Why the club is more willing to get investment from far areas like India,Korea.Dont talk like idiot that you all are only loyal.Even half side of your town are blue.
I think everyone on this blog are too loyal and only 2-3 persons here are the local ones.
Regarding your Rooney love,he has not scored any miracles this season. All his goals have come from 18 yard box with a lot of help from Nani and Valencia and lot of sacrifice from Berbatov. He has taken around 50 freekicks and not a single one has been saved by the GK( dont even talk about goals) which must also be a record in whole Europe,i m sure.He has just converted the chances created by the wingers which you must do as you are considered the best in Britain.
Even those like Bent are not too behind in that sense.

At the start of the season when people said that we would be rubbish this season after the loss of Ronaldo and Tevez I said that United would be good enough to compete for the Premiership and make the last eight in Europe, but wether we would be good enough to actually win these competitions only time will tell so there was no point arguing over it.
My prediction turned out to be correct and now we will see if we have what it takes to get the job done, so stop arguing and just enjoy these big games. Some on this blog never expected us to be even in this position. SAF will send a team out tomorrow that is capable of beating Chelsea with or without Rooney and even a draw would be a good result.
The defeat to Bayern could also be rectified with a solitary 1 – 0 win,not an impossible task. Things could go pear shaped in the next few days, but they could both easily end up positive, lets wait and see.
Whether we end up just short or not, this season has been better than most predicted and I have no doubt that SAF will be in a far better position this summer to evaluate our shortcomings and deal with them in the transfer market than he was last summer. We will know in the next few weeks how many steps we have taken backwards after losing Ronaldo and Tevez. I dont think it is as far as some thought and with 2 to 3 good signings in the summer I think we will be good to go again. Chelseas team will soon need a total overhaul, Liverpool are in a mess and Arsenal are in need of 2 or 3 quality players too. Of all the top clubs United are in the best shape to maintain thier position, stop moaning and start supporting, its certainly better than it was in the eighties

@Owen: stop bashing Rooney mate, hes our player and we should be glad. you might think he has faults, thats your opinion mate and your entitled to it. But I cant get my head round someone who constantly points out the fauts of our players who have been sensational this season, it sounds like you want to proven right more than the team suceeding. There are players currently playing for United like Carrick and Park who in my opinion are not good enough, but I hope both of them have stormers from now until the end of the season so that the team prospers. Its called supporting your team mate.

@Stephen: It’s nice to like the loyal players, and really, I’m with you on this, but it’s really a thing of the past. The new generation are being handled by agents from an early age, and clubs are more likely to succumb to large offers. Pressure from both sides makes it harder to devote your career to a single club!
Scholes, Giggs, Neville, Rooney – I love ‘em to bits, but they are throw backs to a different era, and the likes of whom will become scarcer and scarcer.

@Redrich: I agree mate, our manager is also a throwback to a previous era and whenever both he and the players you mentioned go, which is not far round the corner, it will be almost impossible to maintain the traditions that United has been built on . In this regard United is inique among the worlds biggest clubs with the exception of Barca, and it has spoilt the fans a bit

@Fred the Red: Both Ronaldo and Tevez are DOING IT for their clubs Fred, the one taking the ‘white brick road’ and the other taking ‘the blue brick road’
. I honestly didn’t think we would be leading the pack this season mate, and I still declare we have had more than our share of good fortune, great dollops of it to be exact, with Mr Own-goal-inho strutting his stuff for us, and Chelski, Le Arse and Liverpoo losing their best players for a good many games this season. I still think our MF is pretty weak Fred, and definately in need of overhaul, but I hope like you we have enough to finish the job now we are where we are!

@Fred the Red: Most of the pessimism was not so much centered around losing Ronaldo, but in not spending the 80mil to replenish our squad.
For some of us this was unthinkable and suspicious. The effects of such folly, was that our team could struggle to compete in the long term.
I’m surprised at the amount of goals scored this season, but I’m not surprised about the thinness of the squad.
Rooney, who has certainly put in his best year yet, will not be with us for the crucial games. Neither will MO.
We really have no choice but to use Berbatov as a single striker in the next 2 games – a situation that is less than ideal, to say the least. Really things didn’t have to be this way, had we’d picked up some decent striking talent!!
If anyone can pull us through this, it’s SAF. A master at getting the job done at the end of the season, he’ll pull out all the stops in the next 2 games, knowing that they will separate a great year from a mediocre year.
It’s now up to the players to show their worth. Step up to the plate, and prove that we’re not just a one trick pony!!

@CraigMc: you make some valid points mate, but its still nice to in the thick of it despite this and I for one will be rooting for them in the next 5 weeks, not tearing them down. I disagree about the midfield, we are 2 qualty players away from solving that problem providing Hargreves returns, A winger like Di Maria and Gourcoff of Bordeaux would solve that problem very quickly, and possibly a top line forward. Three players for around 60 million of the muted 80 that Gill says that SAF has available would solve the problem. Things are not as bad as some think. We are not the team we were, but we are certainly not as bad as some make out.
@Redrich: Once again I think you are right and the pessimism that engulfed this blog at the start of the season arrived when the transfer window closed without us making any major signings. He gambled on Michael Owen being a stop gap so to lose both Rooney and Owen at this stage is still bad luck even given Owens injury record. Bottom line for me starting this vseason was that we showed that we had the foundation to stay competitive and with a few signings this summer that we would stay competitive, no matter what happens in the next few weeks this has been achieved, and you never know, we might still have a few shiny pots to display at the end of what has been an intriguing season.

Im not so worried about the Chelsea game. After all we are at home and a draw would be perfectly respectable and still give us a fighting chance at winning the title. Chelsea are not the force they once were, and while I would never underestimate them, I think they are quite predictable and if Fergie gets the tactics right we can get a result.
The difficult game is going to be Bayern. I still have no idea how we are going to beat them. Im pretty sure Bayern will score because our full backs are suspect defensively and in Ribery and Robben they have some of the best. Their midfield is also better than ours and where they differ from Milan’s midfield is that they know how to press, and our midfielders cannot handle the press.
The only good thing about Bayern is that they are a bit toothless. Even though they were all over us at the Allianz, they missed half a dozen sitters and the goals they did score required a lucky deflection, and a catalogue of defensive errors from us. If we defend properly and control the midfield we can get a 1-0 win.
If we concede I just cannot see us scoring three goals. Berbatov has been averaging less than a goal every two games, none of our midfielders have managed double figures thus far, and the only other strikers we have is Diouf and Macheda both of whom are unproven.
Even with Rooney there have been few occasions where we have managed three goals against top quality opposition.
A 2-1 would suffice but then you get the problem of penalties and German sides are impossible to beat on penalties!
My feeling is we will win the Premier League and get knocked out by Bayern.
Strangely Im not that disappointed. Like you guys are saying, none of us really thought we would achieve anything without Ronaldo. To reach April and be top of the Premiership and be in the quarters of the Champions League is really very impressive (even if it has been largely due to Rooney scoring much much more than anyone could have ever expected).
I hope to God funds will be available next season. I don’t think Hargreaves will last long before he picks up another injury. And while Rooney is vastly improved as a striker, this season was a one-off and next season he will return to being a 20 goal a season striker. So I think we need a couple of quality central midfielders and another striker. Anderson needs to be sold. Carrick should be no more than a squad player. And Giggs and Scholes need to be phased out and saved for run of the mill Premiership games rather than being played in all the big games.
Rodwell and Gourcuff for a combined fee of £50 million would do a lot towards making us one of the best teams in Europe again

@colver: I don’t share your fears about the Munich game. Our biggest asset is our wide game, and we can certainly get behind their back 4 – who are somewhat slow.
We will have our chances and it’ll come down to whether or not we can convert.
The Chelsea game could actually be a trial run for how we approach Wednesday. If SAF can find a nitch for Berbatov, that, perhaps, doesn’t require a leading role and allows him some more freedom to find the large amount of space he needs, we might end up golden.
This would require a huge CMF effort, with all concerned stepping up and playing to their ability (err, Carrick, this would mean you, mate) and for Park to play as the third man inside – almost as a second striker, helping the Berb break through!
But whatever is put forth, it’s will be key that the players make it their vital ambition not to fuck up. In anyway!!

@Redrich: And I can see Berbatov going down with an injury. It always seems to happen in this kind of scenario. I especially notice it happening to backup keepers who finally get their chance only to fall victim to an injury. Unlike many, I was negative right from the 4th quarter of last season when I started noticing our manager using more and more negative tactics and screwball squad selections to the mix. Right then I was calling for an infusion of new blood and realizing that even if Ronaldo stayed, there were issues with our central midfielders and at the time our problem at LB because Evra was so bad last year.
Then the transfer happened and i went into dark Lord mode right away. Hell with who we got to replace him, he was irreplaceable in my books. But then the season started and we really got nothing for the money we received and I really felt down over our prospects. And you know what the funny thing is, All my predictions about how we would play, how boring our system would get and how slow our buildup and all was going to get was correct. The difference was Fergie’s outstanding balancing act. He managed to take the good with all the bad, added a lot of good luck for us, bad luck for our opponents and brought in the great OwnGoalinho and this club has exceeded it’s wildest expectations. This club without Rooney would not finish in 4th place. That’s a fact. With Rooney and without a lot of luck and OwnGoalinho this club is a distant third trying to hold off Spurs and Shitty.
So despite all the negativity, I have to commend Fergie for working his mirrors and magic act to perfection. He has gotten more out of this team than anyone else could. But that just tells me how inadequate a team this is and how much new blood is required to truly make it a Lamborghini again. We need all the Ronaldo money to infuse into player purchases. So this summer will be the witching hour. Will Fergie come across as a king sized liar and will the Glazer’s death knell finally toll loud as Big Ben? Personally, I think so. Joe Cole and one mid range signing will not cut it.

@Redrich: Our wide game doesn’t even compare to Bayern’s. Bayern have three guys they can count on for width who are world class. Robben, Ribery up front and the overlapping, dribbling and crossing skill of Philip Lahm. Now with all due respect to both Valencia and Nani, neither are in the class of those Bayern wingers, at least not yet. Evra is 3/4 of what Lahm is as he breaks down when it comes to making the finishing pass or cross. His defence is also a little suspect if not focused. United need to watch out for Bayern’s speed and width and also the physicality of their central midfielders who are also capable of scoring goals from long range. I still think United will win but it will be very tight and very physical. Do not take the Germans lightly. They are actually a better road team than a home team.

@colver: I agree whole heartedly about Rodwell and Gourcuff. As for Chelsea, I’d generally agree with you but two factors need to be taken into consideration here. Chelsea are in excellent form over the past two weeks having score 12 goals in two games. Their confidence is sky high and they are well rested having been knocked out of the CL. Also, United are not in the best form since their Munich debacle and the loss of Rooney has got to hurt the clubs confidence and attack going into what is the biggest game of the year. The great news however is that if there was ever a time to ask for two straight home games, this week is the one.

@colver: I saw the entire Benfica Liverpool game and i was quite impressed with Di Maria. What we need is him and a really good MF to support Hargo and Fletch (assuming Hargo comes back fighting fit). Di Maria and ROdwell with another striker (even a supplementary one for 10-15MM) should suffice during summer. Only fear about Di Maria is being an Argie and if he is indeed rotated with Nani / Valencia, how will he react…same with Benzema. might be a risk.
