Manchester United vs Fulham: Preview
Betfair is the official Manchester United betting partner and we here at Red Rants have partnered with them to offer a free £25 bet when you register. Unlike other betting sites, Betfair allows you to place bets when the game is running and choose the odds at which you want to play. What allows you to do these things is you’re betting against other fans, not the bookie, so if you want better odds than are currently available, for example, you can place an order for a better price (but bear in mind that if your price is unrealistic your bet is unlikely to be accepted). So, give this a run if you’re up for it.

After comfortably overcoming a Wolves reserve side Manchester United must travel to Craven Cottage to face an in-form Fulham team fresh from Europa League duty. Expect a tight match as Fulham are unbeaten in their last six games, in all competitions. United on the other hand are hindered by the same plethora of injuries that have become commonplace over recent weeks.
For United, Tomasz Kuszczak will start in goal, as Edwin van der Sar has not recovered from a knee injury in time to face his former club. Ben Foster will remain benched.
The biggest job for Sir Alex Ferguson will be reshuffling the defensive pack, as Nemanja Vidic picked up a calf strain in the game on Tuesday. Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, John O’Shea, Jonny Evans and Gary Neville are all still out. Rafael, it seems has recovered from an ankle problem and could be in contention for the right-back slot, along with Ritchie de Laet. Despite his injury, Vidic should be partnered by Michael Carrick at the back, with Patrice Evra on the left-hand side.
Owen Hargreaves is all still out, while Ryan Giggs and Nani are doubtful, with hamstring and ankle injuries, respectively. Darren Fletcher will more then likely be partnered by Paul Scholes in the centre, with an ever improving Valencia on the right, and depending if Giggs has recovered from injury or not, look for Obertan or Park on the left.
Up-front, Wayne Rooney will lead the line as always, joined by Dimitar Berbatov. Michael Owen will again have to settle for a place on the bench.
Fulham manager Roy Hodgson will be without Diomansy Kamara and Simon Davies who are sidelined with knee and ankle injuries respectively, while Andy Johnson is unlikely to be in the squad as he is hampered by a groin injury. Good news for the Cottagers though, Danny Murphy made his comeback midweek and is expected to keep his place.
Striker Bobby Zamora looks to be back to his best after scoring four goals in his last three games, including a brace in Switzerland against Basle in midweek. Jonathan Greening is expected to make his 300th career league start on Saturday, will be facing his former club.
Last season, Fulham beat Manchester United at Craven Cottage for the first time in 45 years, a 2-0 victory. This season they have made their best start to a league campaign since 2003.
It will no doubt be a tough match, and one that we could struggle to win, especially with our defensive issues, though, one ray of light is the fact Fulham have failed to win in six of their seven league matches immediately following a Europa League outing. That provides some comfort at least.
Rooney has also scored seven goals in the last seven Premier League away matches, while Scholes is one goal away from 100 in the Premier League.
Prediction: 1-1 Draw
Probable Line Up: Kuszczak, De Laet, Carrick, Vidic, Evra, Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs, Berbatov, Rooney.

@Aditya: There’s a hilarious thread on Redcafe about Ben arfa.
Basically (what I read there) was that Obertan had motivational issues – Seemed to view himself too good for the minnow; or didn’t put in the effort and graft required apart from just talent. He was apparently hooked on playing the Nintendo DS in the changing room just befre matches!!!
Compare that to a Ben Arfa who got into fights with team mates everywhere he played and got to words (in certain cases insulted) each manager he played under.
Both them had (have) issues, but seemingly of very different nature. Whether coming to OT and working under SAF will make them chin up and dig in?

Our track record with Argentinians isn’t exactly awe inspiring. He would also take half a season to settle in, and Im sure his club would rather wait till the summer in the hope of tempting bids from clubs like Real Madrid and Manchester City. We’ve got burnt before buying over-hyped youngsters.
If transfer funds are low, I say we spend £10 million on a defender. An overhaul of our squad is not possible this time of year….most clubs aren’t willing to sell, players take time to bed in, etc etc. So lets consolidate with an extra defender. Using a defence first approach I think we can finish in the top 4. But if we do not reinforce our defence and the injury crisis continues we are going to concede a lot of goals and as we all know, our insipid attack is incapable of scoring more than around a goal a game.

@colver: I agree, defense first, but this Di Maria lad is something special. I have watched him play seveal times and he is the real deal. He is big, fast, and his technical ability is remarkable. He is a dead-ball specialist and a rather intelligent player. If we truly are interested in him then now is the time to sign him, not after the World Cup when it will be 35 or 40 million pounds to sign him. I watched him play yesterday in a friendly between Argentina and Catlonia and he and Higuain we the two stars for Argentina. Even if we do not sign him this still means SAF is full of shite and we are looking to bring players in

If you are looking for a striker in the mould of Drogba, look no further than Mame Biram Diouf. When we signed him I told you guys he was good, and from now on I look forward to him impressing. In my opinion even better than Berbatov, maybe not as footballplayer, but as a striker for United. He and Rooney can become a really deadly partnership…

@colver: Why spend money on a defender? Sure we have hit an unparalleled injury epidemic when it comes to ur defenders but that is nothing more than fluke occurrence to have that many injured all at once. My God we have so much depth in that area. If I was to go for a defender it would be at seasons end depending on what the future holds for both Rio and Vidic at United. Is Rio healthy enough and still good enough to continue and is Vidic going stay or leave the club? If one leaves then go after Simon Kjaer or Jack Rodwell. What we should seriously consider doing is signing Philip Lahm. Other than that, I’d leave the back four alone. Brown, O’Shea, Neville, Rafael, Fabio, De Laet, Vidic, Rio, Evans and Evra means we are 10 deep in our back 4. That is more than enough for this season considering most of them will be back in January.

One day Fergie will wake up to the realities of dealing in today’s football marketplace and understand that you cannot offer a team a few shillings and a bowl of Borscht and expect them to sell you a player like Angel Di Maria. Apparently Benfica has flatly turned down the latest offer from Manchester United. WOW!
What a big surprise. The team has a 40 million dollar buy out clause for a world class winger and Fergie thinks he can offer them 9 million and an out of form and out of favor winger named Nani and that they will bite?
Lets see what would happen if this was attempted in Football Manager 2010, what would happen? Oh yes, the response I would expect is……………………NO FUCKING WAY. Perhaps if Fergie were to offer 20 million and Nani as well as offer them a friendly game at Benfica next year they might stand a 30% chance of success. Right now their chances look slim to none based on this bargain basement offer which I categorize as nothing more than a silly assed attempt to once again pull the wool over the fans eyes by making it seem that United is serious and have money to deal. That of course means that they have turned poor little Nani in to currency and he no longer is a player. Officially he is now known as Nani the ten thousand pound note.
Man it sucks to be a United fan these days. It really sucks. We are really scraping the barrel in our attempt to still look like a legitimate contender.

Many of you know that Michael Ballack is my favorite player in the world and that Juan Roman Riquleme is thrid after Cris Ronaldo. Well as controversial as that might be to many of you it doesn’t compare to the cunt formerly known as John Terry. This guy’s disregard of the rules and an his disregard for honesty and sincerity is disgusting Although I respect his love for Ballack, because Ballack is great, to vote for Drogba and Ballack as the top two players in the world is beyond ridiculous, but bloody well criminal.

For the record my top five would be
1. Ronaldo
2. Messi
3. Torres
4. Xavi
5. Vidic
And I admit to my bias about about Ronaldo on top despite the fact that on paper, Messi had a better year. I still believe without a shadow of doubt that the best player in the world by a lot is Ronaldo. His skill set is far more powerful and extensive than the little she man known as Messi and his band of he she’s like Iniesta, Xavi, Henry, IbrahimoBitch and the rest of the girls brigade at Barcelona. Ronaldo is a strong and powerful presence and had it none been for his ankle surgery, he would have won his second player of the year award in a row. Look at his goal of the year award and his goal vs Arsenal and ask yourself, can Messi do that? Hell no. RONALDO RULES!

@Grognard: Grog, I believe in many of the commnets you have stated about the club and our current status in world football. However, in the grand scheme of things it is all a bunch of bullocks. Of course you should rant and comment on all of the probelms as you see them; I for one personally have begun to enjoy your perspective to a degree. However, given the plight of the millions of people in the world and the level of poverty that those same millions face across the world, you certainly take things seriously overboard from time to time. Even from a football perspective for crying out loud, it is not like we are Newcastle or something. I have a mate who is a Newacstle supporter and to have seen and felt the mess he went through last season was troubling. Now his spirits are up slightly consdiering how well his club are doing in the Championship-but give everything some perspective-not everything is doom and gloom-not everything is a conspiracy-and even if United got relegated because the path they are on and got much worse and everything you have prophesied came true, yes it would suck, but at least this Christmas you have a roof over your head, food in your gut, and a life worth living. Pull yourself back at time or two and view things from that point and see if you still feel the same loathing and disdain.
Merry Christmas brother.

Far fetched as this may seem, this would be a great move by Fergie and United. Chances of it happening? 5% out of 100. However, even if it were to be taken seriously, would he come to a team that has owners that are so clearly sabotaging the on field product tin order to line their pockets? I think he is better off staying where he is.

@RichmondRed: Comne on mate, that’s pretty heavy handed. Throwing the world is poor at Christmas card in my face is uncalled for. I’m just talking football mate. You think that is all I care about. My mother is on her last legs and I had to have her rushed to hospital yesterday from her retirement home due to a serious kidney infection and a possible broken toe that the retirement facility refused to act upon. She’s 92 and I’m not sure if she will see 2011 and you throw that heavy handed crap at me like I am incapable of seeing the big picture and putting thing into perspective.
This is a rant site for United fans and as I am a very disgruntled United fan, I write very disgruntled material. An the team deserves it too. It does not mean that I do not have a life outside of this blog or that I do not look at anything else with the same seriousness that I do this blog or this team. Not so at all. I’m just a passionate persona as well as a passionate writer and to be honest, I shouldn’t have to apologize for my content as it is honest, sincere, well thought out and avoids insulting or picking on others. What more do you want from me? I’ll be positive when the club does something positive. Merry Christmas to you to.

@Grognard: Grog, I never looked for or even did anything to suggest an apology should come from you to me or anyone for the matter. I enjoy your passion and your enthusiasm. That emotion in which you exude is one of the great things about football and this blog. So I am not sure where you felt I was looking for an apology. By all means, keep writing they way you prefer. I just feel you look at United currently as if we are already Newcastle FC and that our club does nothing but lie to its fans and gets great enjoyment out of doing so. Why would Ferfgie want to show all his cards so other clubs with more money could come in and swoop players out from underneath us? Point is, no one really knows what is going on and all we as fans can truly contribute or comment on with any validity is what we see on the pitch. We know nothing about what goes on behind close doors, on the training ground, in the dressing room etc. So when comments on the transfer market are made without evalauating any facts (most which are not known) and people begin bashing SAF for what is or is not happening it just smacks at Fergie being a scapegoat.

@Grognard: Exactly what I was saying, the guy has a 35 million pound buy out clause and Man City are already talking about 35 million plus for him. Nani was bought at 17 million and his valuation as most certainly dipped. We just cannot expect to get the guy with 10 million plus Nani who might be worth a maximum of 10 -12 million. That is still a good 10 plus million short of is valuation.

@Taehr: Again, it’s £9mil and Nani. So £20mil. It’s likely that either someone else will come in and bid stupid money, or he will stay there until after the world cup and his price will double because he is a quality winger. It makes you wonder, since Nani hasn’t had much of a chance the first half of the season, why didn’t we sell him in the summer and get Di Maria while nobody was interested?
I think it’s much more likely that we will get Ben Arfa. We need quality, Marseille want rid, and Fergie has a habbit of sorting players out… he couldn’t even try and consider himself a big fish at United, and that me be just what he needs!

As a football fanatic who has watched Mame Biram Diouf for nearly two years with a neutral football view, I will give him ratings from 1 to 10(10 being the highest). So, here goes!
Crossing – 4
)
Finishing – 8
Heading – 9
Volleys – 8
Passing – 7
Both feet – 10(You won`t notice a difference, whether its his left or right)
Tackling – 6
Dribbling – 8
Ball Control – 9
Long shots – 6
Leap – 9
Strength – 9
Stamina – 8
Speed – 9,5(Fastest player in the Norwegian League by a long shot!)
Agility – 7
Reactions – 7
Balance – 8
Aggression – 9
Positioning – 8
Work-Rate – 9
Vision – 7
Penalties and free kicks- 2(Rubbish
Ability to play as a lone front man – 9
Creative force – 6
It`s a fair assessement to say he may be the second coming of Didier Drogba, but he is a lot faster and better technical. Maybe a combo of Saha and the Donkey? Just without the crying and diving and all that, he is an honest player, a hard worker who is ambitious. United fan as well, so for me he may well be a brilliant signing. As long as he cost under £10 mill, trust me… He is a fucking bargain!!!

Molde did fuck up a little bit towards the end of the season. Their wingers were non existent, and Thioune took over their creative attack, which meant it started to go through the middle. Not that it hurt Diouf, but basing their play on only one creative central midfielder instead of two wingers didn`t make a lot of sense with the strikers Molde have. Diouf did well even so, but his striker partner made bad judgements as he wasn`t used to that, and his movement ruined Dioufs chances. But he still did well and if Thioune had been less selfish at times he could have scored another handful of goals…
Brilliant player, no doubt. Just what we need in my opinion…

@RichmondRed: Mate, I can’t speak for you but I do feel the club has been lying to us. Corporations do that. American business is structured that way because they want to hide profits and losses and because they want many of their employees or customers in the dark. Too many fans are remembering the overall history of United before the glazer’s took over. It’s a different animal now and unfortunately, so is Fergie. In many ways he has changed and mellowed. I n other ways he has become harder and more stubborn and very protective of his role in the club. He doesn’t like to answer for any of his decisions or mistakes and he doesn’t like to be pushed into anything by the media or the fans. He has adopted an us vs them mentality and Old Trafford has become a stronghold or fortress. I think it’s incredibly childish of him to act like he does because all we are really talking about is football, but this is the pro game and jobs are on the line including his. So when I let him and the club have it, I don’t hold back because I am an anti conformist by nature but also because I say fuck off to those who literally are telling me to do the same by treating me as unimportant. And frankly, United and Fergie have been treating all of us die hard United fans like we don’t matter one bit.

@Aditya: The only thing we have in our favor is that Di Maria want s to play for us badly and not Man City. So he can turn down other deals in order to force his current team to finally feel compelled to accept ours. But our offer is still going to have to improve over what it is right now. Hell I’m not even sure I buy the whole thing and that it isn’t all fiction.

He’d have to explain to the Glazer’s he just spent 9 million pounds that they would not be willing to give him.

@owen: YUP. And I wouldn’t give Messi more than a 5 in physicality. The man is a mouse. Ronaldo is also a much better shooter as he has all kinds of shots in his arsenal. Messi only has the ability to slowly place shots past keepers. In my books Ronaldo wins in a landslide.
By the way, did anyone catch Ronaldo’s goal against Zaragosa? Outfuckingstanding. What skill and composure. I’d like to see any of our forwards pull that off or any of our wingers. Also, has anyone noticed how incredibly happy Ronny looks and how happy and full of smiles and hugs he is after goals for Real Madrid? Compare that to the dour, sour faced Ronny who would score for United and who literally looked intense but not like he was enjoying himself or his teammates. I do not blame this on Ronaldo. I blame it on the British game, it’s seriousness, it’s lack of fun and the lack of fun in playing for Fergie and United at a time when all has changed and the team was playing defensive unattractive football and capitulating to tough opponents by playing one man up front for so many games. Life and football look and feel utopian for Ronny these days. I am happy for him but sad for myself and all of us.

@Grognard: You know I have been Criticizing Fergie as and when warranted this season. But, I tried to think about these things by little bit of different angle. I don’t know whether we will be on the same page on this or not but I would like to put few thoughts The FERGIE and what all his doing recently.
I won’t like to get into footballing part of the story bro, as we both are totally on the same page. We both don’t like the tactics he has been playing at the same we both accept that what ever those tactics are keeping us where we are. So, not much to say about that.
Now onto the other issue.. That is Fergie’s stubbornness and the behavior recently….
I tried thinking a lot bro that why a man who was such close to fans always treated us so well albeit with some arrogance but deserved one can become the way he is. I think the factor that might be playing here is the attachment of the boss with this club. I mean along with all the history that it has we have to accept that BOSS has taken care of this club like its his own baby and help him grow lips and bounds in last two decade. Now just like us he might be aware of the things that this takeover is working like a slow poison and killing the club from inside slowly but surely. Just tell me what he must have been feeling about it. I mean, the club for which that man sacrificed his whole life is not healthy, can’t function properly and almost nearing the end, then what he must be going through. Its not easy bro, is it??? I mean we all know the man has become less tolerant, rude, even more arrogant and even to the fan’s with whom he was not this way… Why is it because he is seeing something more than we can’t, is because he is having the feeling that everything that is going on which is not correct he just can’t stop that or is it because he is having the FEELING OF HELPLESSNESS which is killing his innerself. It can be all of this…
Now then the question arise why is then not coming out with the reality and truth. What truth we are wanting to here from his mouth bro that we are skint no longer the have any money, or we have owner who are bastards of the first grade. Sorry bro, the day he will do this the club will SINK totally and he knows it and he is too loyal and attached to club (and not owners) that he won’t do this.
The last things is then why he just doesn’t leave this place. We have to accept that the direction this club is going he is the only man who can keep everything in tact, if he leaves before GLAZIERS then make no mistake that this club will vanish and he knows it totally. And he finally, he is winner. He will never run away, the quality which made him champions for 2 decade. He is the sort of Captain of sheep, that even when he knows that this sheep is sinking he will not leave that he will rather SINK with it. I don’t know whether its good or bad but that is way it is in my view… And that is why he is still around…
I don’t know if I am right or not but, I feel this is the correct assessment of recent FERGIE. I am sad for the man and really feel that man deserves lot more but…..

@Onkar:
I would call that exaggeration mate. No hard feelings but “Feeling of helplessness killing his inner self”? That was going slightly overboard.
We will not know whether he has the money or does not unless the January window and the next summer go by. Remember that United went through 2003 to 2006 when we did not win anything, were off the first place by as big a margin as 18 points. We had players like Eric Djemba Djemba, Kleberson, Bellion, at this club. We were in transition then too for a couple of years, Keano gone, Scholes and Giggs not at their best etc. Did we sink after that? We did not, we came back strong and fighting. Won the title three years in a row and the Champions league.
Now, regarding Fergie’s behavior towards the fans and his stubbornness and arrogance. This depends on what you call stubbornness and arrogance. I honestly do not recall Ferguson coming out and insulting the fans. Calling him arrogant, rude, stubborn because he does not come out and tell us the fans the inner functioning of the club is not very appropriate.
I just want to know why you are calling him arrogant, stubborn and rude. Ferguson not talking about the inner functioning of the club is not something new. There have been several times when he said we would not buy anyone in the transfer window when we still went and splurged. This is not something which is happening for the first time is it? Why call him names then?

@Grognard: I was reading, rather googling about the Albert Scanlon, I found out one of the most incraedible thing about him. It is specifically incredible given the kind of injury CRISIS we are witnessing. I mean, he was one of the survivor in that disasters Munich Air Crash and had serious injuries to his head along with broken leg.
Just look at Eduardo what has happened to him after the broken leg he suffered. He just can’t play the way he used to and Albert Scanlon played FUCKING 42 GAMES at highest level
. AMAZING…. That is LEGENDARY.
Such was the character…He was a real DEVIL…
And what did he do, next season he played in 42 games scoring 16 times from the wings. Fucking 42 games after broken leg and head injury..
I think that is the sort of commitment and character we are missing in current team. I mean imagine even ROY is missing the games after games for having little niggle here and there or having bloody FLU.. Naaahhh.. Never happened… Bloody you shoot him in one leg and still he will stand up and play for us..
I really miss such character likes of Albert Scanlon and Roys of this world… When ever I see this team I feel as if team of 11 pussies is playing…

@Aditya: I know bro.. That was bit overboard.. As I really feel for the man and I honestly feel he is little helpless in current situation… I mean can you imagine after 23 years at helm and creating teams after teams he is not able to understand that we are bloody not good enough. Then why is not buying it.. Because he is helpless.. Even if he wants to he can’t.. You know why because we are bloody SKINT…. And I think that definitely plays his mind….
Secondly common bro whole world knows that he is arrogant (albeit deserved) the way bullied the referees is the good example of it. He is definitely RUDE… Ask Becks, Rudd and others who have crossed his lines and Stubborn he is because he won’t ever accept that he has made a particular mistake.. i.e Buying Berba (mind it I am the biggest Berba Fan here still I feel that he is just not fitting the team)…
As far as your 2003-2006 comparison goes, you just can’t compare the period of 2003,2004,2005 in that as we were a ZERO DEBT or shall we call DEBT FREE plc. So even a baron period of 3 years didn’t affected us. But, now we have truckload of debts and and we all know what has happened in last three years. For all the domination in football we are having our debts to go to 700mn from 550mn. We booked LOSS after TAX in the same year when we booked world record Operating Profit. Such is scale of debt servicing we are doing. Can you imagine what will be the situation if we don’t win anything for three years like your example. We will be ROYALLY SCREWED.. And trust me the who has sacrificed 23 years of life for this CLUB knows it and can SEE it knowing that he can do nothing about it.. What he must be going through then….
I know I may be wrong and I may going over board but then I am sure if this is way it is happening then I am lucky that I am not the one who is facing it… I am not that strong….
