Manchester United vs Sunderland: Preview

VidaA former United stalwart returns to Old Trafford this weekend (along with a few other familiar faces), bringing along with him a Sunderland team that have endured something of a yoyo start to the season. Yes Steve Bruce skippered the Reds to three Premier League titles once upon a time but he will be desperately hoping to outwit his former mentor in the opposing dugout come Saturday.

To get the ball rolling, the Black Cats haven’t won at the Theatre of Dreams in some 41 years. With eight wins on the bounce for the Reds heading into the game, anything but victory would surely be deemed a disappointing result.

Following the hard fought triumph over an aesthetically pleasing Wolfsburg on Wednesday, three points at home in the Premier League is certainly a must in order to keep things ticking over. Sunderland, on the other hand, were 5-2 winners against Wolves in their last outing, a deceptively flattering scoreline as I’m sure those who witnessed the encounter will testify.

The main bits of team news from a United perspective refers to opposite ends of the pitch. After putting in a steady shift without covering himself in glory against the German champions, Tomasz Kuszczak will have to settle for a place on the bench as Ben Foster resumes as Edwin van der Sar’s Premier League deputy. Michael Owen’s latest injury, meanwhile, will keep him out of action for the forthcoming round of international fixtures next weekend.

At the back you would envisage little change with Ferdinand and Vidic at centre-back and Patrice Evra and John O’Shea on either side of them.

Ryan Giggs’ cameo on Wednesday evening brought about his 150th career goal for United and the landmarks are coming around thick and fast as a strike against Sunderland will see him notch up his 100th Premier League goal. Your guess is as good as mine as to who Fergie may decide to play on Saturday (you’ve probably a better chance of predicting the lottery results in fairness) but given the current rotation policy and that we should be afforded plenty of space, expect Scholes and Fletcher to possibly start with Nani and Valencia on the flanks as Park remains doubtful with a virus.

That leaves Rooney and Berbatov to head up the attack, a partnership that is showing signs of flourishing and should come to life against the frailties of a Sunderland defence that is hardly up there with the best in the league.

The big decision Steve Bruce will have to make is whether to sit back and soak up pressure or attack United from the off and hope for the best. Whatever tact the one-time United captain decides to go with, Darren Bent will undoubtedly start having scored eight in his last nine Premier League starts.

Speaking to the media, Ferguson explained that he is hardly relishing the task of picking his team with so many players fighting fit and on top of their games at the moment.

“We’ve a strong squad. The problem with having everyone fit is picking the right team,” he is quoted as saying by the Associated Press.

“Our two central midfielders – Michael Carrick and Anderson – were fantastic against Wolfsburg, and I thought Darren Fletcher and Paul Scholes were outstanding at Stoke. It is giving me a real headache.”

The United boss went on to praise the managerial work of his former player and that he expects Sunderland to achieve big things with Bruce at the helm.

“He’s had experience of the other side, from down there scrapping at Sheffield United, Crystal Palace, Huddersfield, Birmingham, and the job he did at Wigan in his second spell there last time was fantastic, almost getting them into a European place,” Ferguson added.

“Now he’s had the chance to spend some money and he’s looking good. Steve’s galvanised the club already, and you can see something great happening there. Hopefully not against us on Saturday.”

On the other side of the fence, Bruce paid tribute to Ryan Giggs, a player he labels one of the greatest to have graced the Premier League.

“He started in 1993 and where are we now, 2009? Jesus. And to play at the level he has been doing, he has to be the greatest ever player to have played in the Premier League” he is quoted as saying by the Telegraph.

“Not just because of his longevity but because he is playing for Manchester United and still getting man of the match awards.

“For me he is their best player, at his age as well.”

Saturday’s match will be the 13th time that Bruce has gone head-to-head with Sir Alex with the Scot possessing a record of ten wins and two draws to date. The former Birmingham City manager may fancy his chances more than ever before considering the form of Darren Bent but the likes of Vidic and Ferdinand haven’t been in opposition before now.

Anything but a comprehensive result will clearly be frowned upon and bar an absolutely unbelievable Sunderland performance a woefully poor United showing, a comfortable victory should prove the final outcome and put further pressure on Chelsea needing to gain a positive result against Liverpool the day after.

Prediction: 2-0

  • I do not see Liverpool in contention this season. Alonso was a big loss and they are now overreliant on Mascherona to hold their midfield together.

It is between us and Chelsea. We are the only teams who can play badly and still win games. I think we will edge it because Chelsea will be unable to strengthen in January and with Drogba and Essien and Obi Mikel and co at the African Nations they lose some key players. Carvalho has lost interest in playing for them, Ballack is showing his age, Terry is injury prone and Bosingwa has lost his form.

I reckon we will win the league (but it won’t be pretty). But we are going to get really exposed in Europe without Ronaldo to score wondergoals and tear teams apart.

I think our defence will show a massive improvement when EVDS returns to reclaim his place in the team. We’ve been leaking goals this season and the only change in a defence that has been very good for the last two seasons has been our goalkeeper. It is very difficult to argue with that fact. Somehow to Foster’s defenders it is never his fault. But I must say that if a goalkeeper concedes as many goals as Foster has this season he has to accept some of the blame.

But that is Foster for you. He does not make howlers (well except for that Tevez/Barry goal) and is never 100% responsible for a goal (somehow there are always defensive errors that his champions use to deflect the blame away from him) but you want a keeper who does that little bit extra to keep the ball out of the net.

Also I hate this idea that we need to give Foster time because he is learning the trade.

Players should do their apprentiships elsewhere and then come to United when they are the finished article. Especially in a position as critical as goalkeeper where experience is paramount. How many goals do we have to concede until Foster comes good? Or more importantly will he ever come good?

While im all for playing young players if they are good enough…the truth is Foster just isn’t good enough and he isn’t even that young!

Foster can warm our bench and the experience he is getting means he’ll do better if EVDS picks up another injury. But when EVDS retires we need a new number one and unfortunately Foster is not and never will be good enough to be number one for a club of our standings.

@colver: I like what you are saying esp about ANC, but for europe.

I realize the lost of Ronaldo affects our creativity and wonder-goal (bar berbatov) ratio, but in Europe we have to look at competition.

I watched another game of Real Madrid vs Sevilla and while they did not have Ronaldo, they were a joke on defense and only looked threatening near the oppenent’s box. I do not think they will get past first round if they play a decent opponent and I feel confident against them if we meet.

I really only see Barca/Chelsea/Inter Milan (Eto’o as as realistic contenders in europe as we can match any other team in the competition when we play near-best or better.

  • @colver: Ballack is not showing his age one bit bit mate. He is being asked to play a more defensive role that frees Lampard more and so by sacrificing himself to those defensive duties he is obviously looking less effective as an attacking midfielder. You see the rare thing with Ballack is that for an AMF he has all the skills to be a DMF also. Sure on the tackle with ability to cover ground and be physical. Lampard cannot do this so guess who gets the dirty job alongside Essien?

As for Liverpool, lets face it after Gerrard and Alonso their squad is very average indeed. Not another top quality player on that roster except maybe Mascherano. I agree that Chelsea will not be able to bolster their squad in January but lets not forget the stubborn streak in Fergie. I wouldn’t be surprised if Fergie makes no moves in the January transfer season because he feels he doesn’t need to, or because the reality is there is no money with which to buy players. Either way I still don’t see us having the depth in midfield or the quality to score at will that will be needed to win this. Chelsea continues to win they will be buoyed with confidence and will become even tougher as the season goes forward. Trust me, beating Liverpool handily today is going to do wonders for their confidence.

  • Dan, I hope you read this. Today I watched the Real Madrid vs Sevilla game. I’m hoping you had the opportunity to catch the game also. The reason being that today you could watch that game and witnessed a clinic of great goalkeeping from Iker Casillas. He gave up two goals he had no chance on but he made a handful of amazing saves that defy description. But that isn’t why I bring his performance up. Take a look at every time his defenders screwed up just how abusive, loud and mean spirited he was towards them for their mistakes, even after he made the saves. He doesn’t tolerate nonsense from his defenders and he will let them have it in no uncertain terms. He is an intimidator and then he had a few high balls that came in where he came out and forcefully punched the ball and took no prisoners in the attempt. Powerful, assertive and king of his castle. If you never saw it, hopefully you can watch a replay of the game because if you see his performance, you will understand clearly why Ben Foster is stand up comic impersonating a goalkeeper.

  • I read that Fergie faces a lengthy touchline ban for his withering verbal attack on referee Alan Wiley yesterday.

    NOTE TO LEAGUE:

I don’t know if the League has noticed over the past year but Fergie wastes very little time around the touchline anymore preferring instead to sit on his hands and ask himself is this what I really envisioned for this team?

  • Jeez, been reading all this for the last couple of days, and without seeing the game, I can’t comment on the particulars. however when all is said and done has anything really changed??

-Foster is still not our best option at GK.

    - Rooney still need to pass the ball to shirts that carry our emblem.

    - We need a CM that can keep out forwards busy.

    - We need a forward that can punch in the goals.

We can say all we want, but until these issues are addressed, all other arguments remain superfluous!!

  • @Grognard: He had an ankle injury in the champions league midweek game and hadn’t recovered in time.

Also that Tampa Bay article is a regurgitation of an article I read a year ago with an extra line that talks about the 80m Ronaldo sale. The Bucs have been low spending ever since the Glazers took over United, and that’s well known already.

  • @ Grognard, few points:
    1. Casillas was absolutely ridiculous last night. That second diving save, he couldn’t even have knonw the player was going to be there when eh dove, but he did. Sevilla should have won by at least, and I’m not exagerrating, 4 more goals if not for him. Too bad he’ll never leave Madrid, but I respect that.

    2. That article on the Bucs is a season old. They then went and spent more money than any other team later in the season. Trust the Mirror.

    3. Even I’ve come around to letting Foster go, but personally I think a buy back option should be stuck in there. Never hurts. It’d be just like us to offload him and in 2 years of regular football him to be awesome.

    4. Watching the Chavs and Pool yesterday, I really felt like both of those first XIs are just stronger than us. Particularly Chelsea. I mean, Ballack, Lampard, Essien and Deco? That’s a seriously talented bunch. I like Fletcher and Ando and so forth, but come on, who are we kidding. Oh and Drogba…what a player.

@ All – Let’s not forget Obertan. Unlike Petrucci, Welbeck, Tosic and so forth he actually was a pretty big deal, at a pretty big club. He failed to live up to promise, but if he’s really been playing with a screwed up back for 18 months, that’s somewhat understandable. And if nothing else, he’ll bring us something we’ve desperately missed – pure unadulterated pace.

Further, don’t forget Llajic. From watching a bit of the under (19s? 21s?) this summer, he looked a class above. Not as pacy, but fantastic vision and touch.

Anyway, my point is that the reason Fergie hasn’t splashed the cash is likely that by the end of January we’ll have a massive squad, and he wants to see who gets to stay before he buys, so he can buy sensibly. For the wings in February, assuming no injuries, we’ll have: Nani, Valencia, Park, Giggsy, Tosic, Ljajic, Obertan, Tosic and Hargo is pretty handy out there too.

Finally, I think I know the solution to solve the Nani conundrum. Go to his house, take away his Ronaldo DVD collection and replace it with a David Beckham compilation. I really think Nani has the first time skill to play like Becks, whipping it in early (two of these against Sunderland were out of this world, but the strikers were no where near em) and that would get him over his over-complication problem. I agree with otehr posters, Nani is good enough to be a hit somewhere, but he’s ours and we need to get hte bset out of him!

  • I thank god that I didn’t get to see that match, it would have been a total waste of my time and energy. Call me roonie cause after watching the highlights I’m going to stop showing the kind of passion I once showed for united, and I will wait till they screw up to come and rant the hell out, like he does his team mates. In one of the highlights he screams at welbeck for not giving him the ball, later he is set up beautifully by berba and he fires a drop kick in to the stands.   Beautiful stuff. For a few years i thought ronnie stole roonies thunder, now im realising there was no thunder there at all. How can anyone have fives bad games in a role and still expect to carry the united mantle :?:
Scholes has started more games than any other CMF this season, Fergie is human and thus makes mistakes, and this is one of them.In no way should fergie be above reproach,if he gets it wrong he needs to be told he got it wrong. Having scholes start immediately after his suspension ended, and seeing him almost get another red in that game, then have him start again on saturday just shows fergie has lost it. What really irks me is continually benching anderson, When Scholes was suspended, united didn’t loose any of the matches and looked really good, but the old ginger man gets more favors than a last born kid.
    Foster…Why bother
One thing I did like seeing was danny welbeck, at least a young up and comer was given time on the pitch, too bad fergie got this one wrong too and put him out of position.
Great to see my main man berba is the only one who seems to do anything worth writing home about. That overhead kick, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, ssssssoooooooo sssssssswwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaattttttttttttt.

  • @Beachryan: “Finally, I think I know the solution to solve the Nani conundrum. Go to his house, take away his Ronaldo DVD collection and replace it with a David Beckham compilation”.

As sarcastic as your comment maybe, I have to fully agree with it. I have always seen Nani to have the potential, but boy does he lack consistency when delivering the balls into the box from the wings.

My only concern though is does he have enough time to live up to my, our, or even SAF expectations of him. That is the $64,000 question.

As regards to your other valid point in mentioning that our strikers are never in the box to receive the odd perfect cross from Nani, well I think thats because they (the strikers) genuinely don’t beleive in his ability to cross the ball accuratley all the time, therefor you tend to see them either outside the box (Dimi) or far out in the opposite side of Nani’s run (Rooney) trying to anticipate where he’ll put the ball.

It is a problem, but hopefully one that can be addressed soon by a rigid training routine. Unless that is if SAF was going to offload him in January or next summer in any case!

  • Nafooy – BOLLOX – total bollox! Rooney is not in the box because he hasn’t got confidence in Nani getting the ball into him???? That is laughable to the extreme! I suggest all you doubters watch the game thru again, and see how many times Nani got the ball into the box. Evans connected with one of his crosses and just nudged it slightle over the bar. Vidic connected with another Nani cross and had his shot kicked off the line. If those two had gone in, Nani would have had 2 assists right there. Where was Rooney when Nani was firing the balls into the box eh???? Like I said watch the game again, and GET WISE  . Even on ROM – notorious for their Nani criticism in some games, were saying in their review thread that Nani had a good game, and was one of our better players! If you think Rooney doesn’t get into the box because Nani doesn’t pass to him, then you have no idea mate, because Rooney has been out of the box for most games of the season and last season, and NANI wasn’t even playing. Total tosh from some of you Nani haterz!

  • @ Nafooy – I wasn’t being sarcastic. I think it’s honestly a good idea. If Beckham had half of Nani’s ability to run with the ball he would of been a phenom. What he had that Nani doesn’t isn’t a good head and a champion’s work ethic. I’m not at training so I don’t know, but I’ve seen nothing to indicate Nani is the same.

@ Craig – I’m not knocking Nani, I thought he was great in the second half. I’m just trying to come up with ways to improve his game. If you watch the seasons with Ruud and Becks, they were on the same wavelength a ridiculous amount of the time. I get the feeling Rooney and Nani are on different planets most of the match.

I believe in Nani. He’s still young, and he really is one of our more dangeours players. But he needs to be given some faith by the manager. If Fergie put his arm around him the way he did with Ronaldo, I honestly believe he can make it. But for some reason he doesn’t.

  • Beachy – Rooney AND every other team member is on a different planet it seems. Can Rooney play with Berba – NO. Can he play with Giggsy – debatable! Can he play with Little Mickey, remains to be seen, but he couldn’t for England so I don’t hold out much hope. The problem is not the other players mate – when are United fans going to see that Rooney wants to play the opposition ALL BY HIMSELF. He is the one who is not doing it at the moment, because of his unquenchable thirst to be SOLO JOE!!! Rooney has to start playing as part of the team again. Complain about Nani all you want, but Rooney has been rank bad worse than Nani for 5 games now!

@Grognard: That was an outstanding game and Casillas was mind-blowing… I could not believe the save he made from 1 foot… him jumping across goal and saving it was schmeichel typical. Amazing. But Madrid failed their first test and their defense is leaky and poor. I would not mind meeting them in ECL. Sevilla is my favourite team now. They played VERY well.

  • @Beachryan: nani is caught in between two worlds likehis team. The conundrum with United for a few seasons now is trying to belnd this new continental style with the old 4-4-2 English game that they were once famous for. To play like Beckham Nani needs to be involved in a game like the Man City game. Problem is whenever he plays, our system is always continental and this is not working for him or the team. In the continental system crossing is at a minimum and our strikers are never in the box to get on the end of those crosses, so this forces Nani to do his Ronaldo imitation and although he occasionally shows a great shot, Nani is not Ronaldo.

Regarding Casilas, yes he was something else. I am not expecting that kind of world class performance by Foster but I expect Foster to perform the fundamentals the same way and to basically rule and command the box the way Casillas does. No nonense, show no mercy, take no prisoners and that includes his teammates. Schmeichel, Schumacher, Kahn and Maier are my all time favorite keepers and there is a reason for it. Yes three are German and Schmeichel is also a German name even though he is a Dane but those keepers all had a vicious mean streak in them and they commanded their box with fierce pride and an aura of fear. Their own teammates feared them and were always awake as to not upset them for shirking their duties. Part of great goalkeeping is ensuring that you make your team play well defensively in front of you. Schmeichel would have torn the top off of John O’Shea for his shoddy marking in the past few weeks. And even if he had given up the goal to Jones on the weekend, he would have ensured that Jones would be visiting the hospital for his efforts. Schumacher on the other hand would have killed Jones, simple as that. I don’t know if people remember what he did to France’s Patrick Battiston in the semi-final in 1982, but he destroyed the players career with a charging collision that easily could have killed the man. I am not condoning that but Schumacher was no nonsense and a very physical presence. That is the kind of keeper I love and frankly, the kind of keeper I demand. Even EVDS falls way short in that regards but he is strong in other key fundamentals, which allows me to like and respect him for his contributions. As for Foster, see ya, wouldn’t want to be ya.

  • @Craig Mc: I for one am and have always been a fan of Nani’s crosses into the box in open play. I am not however a fan of his corner kicks that for me seem very lame and lack velocity and the proper height at times.

  • @Craig Mc: I would be more than happy then if these so called money bags would show up and force a purchase like they tried at Liverpool and succeeded at City. Don’t wait for the Glazer’s to put the club up for sale, knock on their door and make them an offer. They are so badly in debt and are struggling with many of their struggling enterprises in the States that they may take a great offer without thinking about it. Just get them the Hell out of Manchester and as far from Old Trafford as possible.

  • @Dan: Because that is what goalkeepers do. If he is timid, intimidated by his surroundings and isn’t willing or doesn’t have the bollocks to stand up to his own teammates when they are screwing up, well then he has no business out there. You are arguing that he needs to be quiet and respectful of Rio and Vidic? BOLLOCKS! He should ream them but good if they fuck up. That’s his job. He needs to be the schoolmaster back there barking orders and demanding 100% efficiency and attention to detail. And as for English keepers, frankly they have all been shit on a stick for 20 years now. The last great English keeper in my view was Gordon Banks. Sure Shilton was good but I will never ever consider him great as he lacked some of the real key elements that I liked in a keeper. But he was still good as was Ray Clemence. Seamann was a muppet as are all the others.

You’re caught up in your English pride my friend and that’s your hang up. I am not German but I do know that they produce the best keepers in the world because historically they have had the role models to emulate and to pattern their game after. Peter Schmeichel grew up in Denmark idolizing Sepp Maier and Toni Schumacher. Is it any surprise then that in terms of ability and style, he played the game in a very similar manner. So if I have a German preference, there is a very valid reason for that. Still, I am a fan of many other goalkeepers from other countries. Keepers I found to be excellent over the years were Dasaev of Russia, Zoff, Zenga and Buffon of Italy, Kahn, Illgner, Kopke of Germany, Hans van Breukelen of Holland who I thought was absolutely outstanding as were, Pfaff of Belgium, Fillol of Argentina, Taffarel of Brazil, and more recently I think that the best keepers have been Given, Cech (before his injury), van der Sar, Lehmann, Frey, Casillas, Neuer, Adler, Weidenfeller, Friedel and Mandanda and Julio Cesar. They are the best of the best and I may be forgetting a few but my requirements are far more demanding than those of English managers. And frankly, it shows.

  • @[OPTI]Madschester United: More importantly, I think Ronaldo is getting fed up with being subbed off games and in this case being rested completely. Too much more of this and he will be demanding out of Madrid or that Madrid find another manager. And frankly, he has the power and clout to get his way. The team has invested a fortune in him.

I watched the entire match, and the work Casillas had to do thanks to a non-existent back four — well, let’s just say no one should be subject to such misery. There’s a reason why Casillas is about the greatest thing to emerge from Real Madrid’s academy in the last 15 years, and it showed yesterday. It’s not just his shot stopping ability, it’s his ability to command the area and deal with crosses that sets him apart.

  • Just a few mitigating thought about Rooney.

Yes, he’s been subdued for the last two (!!!) games. Has he suddenly turned crap?

I don’t think so. I agree that he’s not looking physically top notch, and that he’s lost a bit of his passing, but let’s remember that his lady is due to deliver very soon, so he may be suffering from a bit of stress, which can be perfectly normal.

While I agree with many comments here about him, I just thought it was getting slighlty over the top. A month ago people were seeing him as the impending POTY. :|

@Red Ranter: If you make a mistake you can’t be flawless. Very good, near perfect, but still not flawless.
Funny thing a player can be flawless without being amazing (meaning he did not commit any mistake, such a Denis Irwin could be) but another can have an extraoridnary performance (as Casillas apparently was yesterday) and yet not be flawless.

But as the saying goes, to each his own and maybe some people react differently to this life experience. I’m glad that you took it like you did though!

And yes I just wanted to re-equilibrate the Rooney debate as a newbie coming here for the first time might think we’re all out to diss him.

  • I watched a bit of the Man Pity game, cheering for Villa  . City players have turned into a right bunch of DIRTY GITS, they are shouting their mouths off at the referee about everything! Mark Hughes was doing his best impression of Fergie – panicking and tapping his watch at the end as Villa were pushing forward.

As for Adebey-whore – “We would have beaten Man Utd if I had been playing” quote – well he did feck all tonight, and I mean feck all. So full of his own self ego – looked ordinary tonight! CARLA was way off his game, giving the ball away with abandon – couldn’t be happier at that – .

  • @Grognard: Grog mate – The Glaziers were offered a massive amount to sell up by a far east consortium, but they refused to sell, saying Man United is a wonderful franchise  . That’s all those swindlers see us as Grog – a feckin franchise!

  • It was so funny when Gareth Barry was taking corners tonight, the Villa fans waving 50 quid notes in his direction. Telling him HE WAS BOUGHT!
