Manchester United’s 08/09 Champions’ League Opponents

Tag: Daily RoundupRed Ranter @ 10:00

Today is the Champions’ League draw. This, coupled with the lack of progress on the Berbatov front (only four days to go), have made my job infinitely easier — I don’t have to come up with a longish post today.

Since the Champions’ League draw starts at 4:30pm (BST) I will leave the stage to you to come up with your predictions for our opponents. (I know, I can be a lazy prick at times).

So here are the pots:

Pot One

Manchester United
Chelsea
Liverpool
Barcelona
Arsenal
Lyon
Inter Milan
Real Madrid

Pot Two

Bayern Munich
PSV Eindhoven
Villarreal
AS Roma
FC Porto
Werder Bremen
Sporting Lisbon
Juventus

Pot Three

Marseille
Zenit St Petersburg
Steaua Bucharest
Panathinaikos
Bordeaux
Celtic
Basel
Fenerbahce

Pot Four

Shakhtar Donetsk
Fiorentina
Atletico Madrid
Dynamo Kiev
CFR Cluj
Aalborg
Anorthosis Famagusta
Bate Borisov

Okay, let’s see who gets their predictions right. The winner will get to do what no one else would be able to: swell with pride as much as Fat Frank on a pie-only regime, and boost his ego to an extent that would make Ronaldo squirm.

So, over to you…

PS: We’ll update this when the results are up.

Update:

Here’s our Group:

Manchester United
Villarreal
Celtic
Aalborg

thats what will happen knowing how the draw is fixed.

chelsea however will end up with PSV Bordueux and alborg or something pity like that.

personally i want to play roma just to beat them again, celtic would be two great games, what with a lot of my mates celtic/utd fans it would be a win win for them. and out of the last pot preferrably a team that we can crush like small dog.

    @Beachryan:
I agree, except I might be tempted to slot Bayern in over Juventus. I suppose that depends chiefly on Ribery’s timetable to return, but if he is fit I would personally give Bayern a slight edge. I agree with Zenit and Atheltico. A. Madrid is the only team I am slightly nervous about drawing. Whichever group they end up will surely be labeled the “Group of Death.” I’m praying they end up in Chelsea’s group, but as Beachryan mentioned those pricks always get seem to get the easiest route.

    My guess:
    Manchester United
    Bayern Munich
    Bordeaux
    Fiorentina

We put 8 past Dynamo Kiev last season and it could of been more. They are an alright team but I have no worries coming up against them again.

If Manucho is in the UK for the photo and training, does that mean we sorted his work permit? Unfortunately Fergie says he’s not fit due to metatarsal break still, but regardless, will be nice to see him in the reserves. I fear we’ve all hyped him up to be the next Drogba, but that’ll take years at this level. Still, he could be a useful impact sub, given height, speed and strength.

Is this Berba thing ever, ever going to end?

Anywayz, my pick for the draw -

    ManUtd
    Villareal
    Celtic
    Fiorentina

I really want Celtic to make it to the latter stages so any draw avoiding Juve, Bayern and Atletico would be fine for them. Wouldnt mind them being in our group as long as its with Sporting or someone like that. Its stupid that a team who have made it to the 2nd round 2 times in a row are seeded lower than a team who haven’t been in the tournament the last 2 years. Celtic do have a habit of getting groups of death when they are 3rd seeds though. Barca and Milan it was last time

All joking aside I heard it was mutual Dong is 23 would have made it a long time ago if he was the ‘new Batistuta’ as SAF was claimed(rumour has it). Oh well time to find a replacement

Infact in the gaffers latest press conference he has AGAIN suggested that we are unlikely to bring anyone in(rumour again, if someone can verify please do). If this falls back on us I will be so pissed of.

Anyone pissed off they bought the perfectly okay black away strip of last season, only to see United’Nike department issue a Blue ‘anniversary’ 3rd away special edition HD bonus features included waste of £40 rip me off new kit out?

The CL draw is on Sky from 4.30 bst> half an hour.
I predict we get either Villareal or Roma and another hard ream.
The scouse will draw Sporting and the Cypriot team that sounds like a Serbian cage fighter. They and Chelski always blag easy draws.

    ReplyReply
  56. AGP says:

@Stephen: True i guess but I won’t be buying either the white or blue away strips, it irratates me that Nike, Adidas, Umbro etc have contracts where-as they can issue new strips every season (2007-2008 man united black away) for example. That isn’t to say I won’t buy a united shirt again, plus I’m only irrated because last year I bought both the home/away(black) from the offical site at a more-than profitable sum whereas I could have bought both from certain websites that will charge a mere £8 for the famous jersey.
The 2006/2007 home only ran for one season also, you can’t suggest it isn’t a little unfair to the fans!

@Stephen: Yeah ok the season ticket dilema you have wins over. You can have that one. I’m afraid you will have to lay off Dong he scored 30+ goals in Belguims second division and has a goal in the Olympics, only injuries ruled him out of being as legendary as William Prunier.

God I hate Skys line-up for the draw>
Big nose Thommo talking up boring Liverpools chances, Charlie Nicolas who is clearly bedazzled by Arsenal and the ‘pretty football’ he has to remind me about every week. Thats not forgetting Wilkins(I apoligise in advance) I was born when he was balding, but I can’t believe that clown ever wore are jersey. Of course, my doors are always open to those who quit.

I think that should be enough information on this matter. :)

As you normally put it, it was one of my tranquiliser shots.

Now let’s get back to discussing about the draw :)

Larsson is coming back to the prem, we’ve just cancelled Dongs contract. Coincidence? I hope not. I’d bloody love Henrik back in the red.

Also, he’d get to go back to Celtic in the Champions League.

Fergie says he wants 4 top strikers. Rooney, Tevez, Berbatov and Larsson sounds like one hell of a setup. Especially if Saha gets fit (haha yeah I know) and ManUcho is half as good as we hype him up to be :

Another season at Hull for young fraizer methinks…..

If you are going to tell the story tell it right as the way you have put it makes it look petty. What you actually said was if I replied to anything Grog said you would remove it (And you did to the perfectly fine comment I made before I got the mail telling me this) meaning in effect I couldnt take part in the majority of the discussions as he was posting 90% of the comments and was involved in every discussion.

And I quit because such a restriction is troublesome as all it takes is someone like Grog who doesnt like being challenged on his view to complain enough and the precedent has been set for you to state you would remove any comment you deemed a potential reply to them too.

As for Craigs question, I might post the odd comment like today but with the restriction hanging over my head its not worth getting into any serious discussion

An easy group on paper but Celtic are not pushovers and neither are Villareal. Both teams are well organised and difficult to break down. I foresee a couple of draws.

If we could get Larsson back as a fourth striker Id like that. He’s an improvement on Manucho and Campbell at least, but Im still holding out for Berbatov. But I think it is all dependent on Tottenham signing another striker and its difficult to see who else they are going to be able to buy.

Shit me that draw gets more boring, more Eurovision each year.
I mean christ I think I predicted the scouse group and if we had got Kiev I would have had are group correct as well.
Chelski again get a easy draw whats worse is Terrys smug face as he walks past Fergie, Am I alone in thinking Carvalho is 10 times better than him and that Terry had not just his worst season but he missed f**king half on it.
Ladies and Gentleman if Uefa ain’t rigged it again I don’t know, it seems UEFA gets more WWF every year with these boring fixed emotionally tied draws.
I thought Bobby was gonna bitch slap that male presenter for making him announce fat Franks name.

Should get through though top but a few hard away games. Arsenal will struggle there away games will screw them up. The BIG4 will all get through.

Well, well, well, ‘Michelle’ Platini is up to his usual coniving again. How the hell did John ‘CryBaby’ Terry get defender of the year? Or even Cech with Keeper of the year? If this is not a biased/rigged/bribed decision, I don’t know what is. Something smells rotten, and it’s not Platini’s breath.

This ‘Bring United down’ thing is going too far, first Platini’s CL prize money rant, Council refusal for United parade, Calderon’s public United bashing, Blatter’s Slave outburst, Levy’s outburst, now this injustice!!! WTF?

They can all go to hell for all I care… we will keep on winning and I hope this unfair snub will make Fergie, Rio, VDS and co more determined to whoop ass this season!!

Yes you quit and made a principled stance that you wouldn’t return until I took that ban off you. Is it me, or am I finding that stance of yours change all of a sudden just because John Terry and Frank Lampard won awards? Not that this is the only United blog that is out there.

Ok, maybe I made it sound petty. Maybe, it is. Maybe it is not. But you don’t exactly cover yourselves in glory right now with your about turn. So stop trying to take a moral high ground.

As I said, if you can stop talking about Grognard or making reference to him your posts will be approved — unlike you, my stance on that hasn’t changed. Or else move on… there are better things in life than this.

Because, regarding making decisions here, I do reserve the ultimate right to my own discretion. If you don’t agree, it will be unfortunate. In your situation with Grognard, I disagree with your version of the story. So there…

You have anything more to say, use the email. It’s just your second comment since your return and you’ve started bitching about Grognard. You see what I mean?

I really don’t think it’s worth talking about all this over here in public.

    God give me strength.

I fucking hate Chelsea for the following reasons.
Lampard- Greedy ponce, only stayed at the club he er loves, and showed him support through his family situation, or because they gave him a 5 year contract at the age of 30, unheard of, in top level football.
JT- Well being simply known by the media (al la Jason Cundy) as JT makes me want to vomit. A player who is so limied in his ability it is untrue, the spitting at Tevez not included in the defender of the year menagerie, crying wimp England/Chelsea captain marvel!!
Kenyon- Smug self proclaimed United fan, selling your soul to the devil, chipping Ronaldinho @ the last minute, runners up medal leading arsewipe.
Mikel- Bullshitting about contract pressures and being generally amoying mouthy twat.
Drogba- Well being think speaks for itself.
A Cole- £55k a week made me feel sick, knob!
Ballack- Behaviour in ECP awful, love to see the referees stance if it was Rooney.
I could go on for hours!!

I said that Gabriel and you had sussed my winding up people on the blog about Rooney etc. But reading your post just now, I guess not – haha!. Liam I love Rooney, but I still claim the right to say when he is playing shit. Or when he disrespects other players by turning up smoking and overweight by a stone or two. My recent posts I was winding you all up. Thought you got that lol.

Seriously though, I have been winding up the Rooney fans, but one or two managed to see what I was doing, and my mischief was found out.

RR – why oh why do people even bother to email you with complaints over and over again?. Its a feckin blog, and FUN for some open warfare on site, but moaning to the blog master behind the scenes, hell I just don’t get it. It shouldn’t be that serious. I learn’t that ages ago, so I say what I say, and if others don’t agree, then to me that makes for a great debate. We are not all going to agree, that’s the fun of it. I love it when people gang up against my posts, bring it on lads. Prepare yourself for repeated defeats though.

Andrei – Ronaldo better than Rooney – a million times. Though the Roon is better than most other teams forward players.

@Craig Mc: The blog’s system sometimes puts comments on hold sometimes. It’s bugs in the system.

And about complaints, anything that concerns a problem a commenter may have on other fellow commenters that’s not United related needs to be done off the comments section with me. That’s my policy on here.

And I can’t understand why it bothers you if people email me their concerns. Whining in public on the comment threads always distracts from the discussing about what we’re here mainly for. And I don’t mind banter about United or anything you want in general. But I take issue with name calling and stuff like when a commenter is wrongly accused of stuff and he needs his concerns to be redressed.
