Mata confident ahead of crucial week

Manchester-United-v-West-BromJuan Mata is confident Manchester United can take an important step forward in what promises to be a very delicate week for Louis Van Gaal’s side.

On Wednesday, United welcome PSV knowing that a win would secure qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League, before travelling to top of the table Leicester City on Saturday afternoon.

“We could make an important step to finish first of our group in the Champions League, and we could climb to the top of the Premiership,” Mata wrote on his blog.

“This is how we face this new week. We’re feeling optimistic, as always, and our goal is to win both games and to have the best possible start to the busy period ahead […] Obviously it’s going to be tough, and we will need to be at our highest level to beat PSV and Leicester.”

Speaking of Saturday’s top-of-the-table clash against surprise package Leicester, Mata said he’s been impressed with Claudio Ranieri’s team and singled out Jamie Vardy, who could break Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s record for scoring in consecutive Premier League games on Saturday, as the danger man.

“Ranieri’s team is having a remarkable season and the proof is that they are top of the league,” said Mata.

“In particular Vardy and Mahrez are outstanding, playing at an exceptional level [… ] We will have to be very careful with them.”
