Memphis backed to shine against former club

Watford-vs-Manchester-UnitedDavid De Gea has backed Memphis Depay to haunt his former club on Wednesday night when PSV Eindhoven travel to Old Trafford in the Champions League.

On Saturday, the Dutchman was handed a first start since United suffered a 3-0 defeat at the Emirates in October and he seized his chance beautifully, scoring United’s first goal in their 2-1 win at Watford and looking a more confident player than he had done at any stage over the last two months.

“He has had a tough few weeks and I’m sure he’ll soon be back at the top of his game,” De Gea explained to MUTV.

“He’s going to bring a lot to the team and I’m sure he’ll be really up for playing against his old club.

“We had quite a few chances and I don’t think we deserved to lose [in Eindhoven].

“We have the chance to play against them at home. We know it will be a difficult game but we need to get the victory and grab the three points.”

After a disappointing start to their Champions League campaign, United are now a win away from securing qualification to the knockout stages and De Gea said he was pleased with his team’s European form so far.

“We started off with a defeat in the first game, but since then we’ve steadily been picking up points,” he said.

“A win would put us through to the next stages, so now we’re just a small step away from qualification.”
