Monday Waffle

Tag: Manchester United News @ 8:50 pm

Hope Monday’s treating you all well. It’s not a day usually known for its kindness, but hey, who’s stopping you from hoping.

Quiet day otherwise and very little by way of United related news or transfer gossip for that matter.

As some people in the comments have already pointed out, Kalou thinks Nemanja Vidic is the weak link in United’s back line. Interesting observation. Last I checked, Vidic’s chant ended with “he’ll fuckin’ murder ya”. Maybe someone ought to tell that to Kalou. Or maybe the words “Iron Man” and “Vidic” don’t ring any bells to the Ivorian. Oh well, good luck to the puny Ivorian trying to run into the Serb who has already said he’s fit physically and mentally for the final and is all fired up.

The Sun’s headline screams: ‘United’s Alves Chase Hots Up‘ only to dampen the enthusiasm of the headline with another line that goes: Alves wants to leave Seville.

Manutd.com has started a series, I believe, called Moscow Diary. In Part I it says, the Reds have arrived in Moscow. I say, nice. Good start. I can’t wait for Part II.

Lubos Michel has been selected to referee the Champions’ League. Again, many commenters, the smart observers that you are, have already pointed out that he awarded the ‘ghost goal’ for Liverpool against Chelsea. I would say, the linesman awarded it, but nevermind.

Martin Samuel has a piece on Rio Ferdinand.

The Luzhniki pitch apparently will be worse than the average Premier League surface. Well done UEFA.

Bernd Schuster thinks Ronaldo will not go to Real Madrid. At least for now.

And before I end this, I thought Death At A Funeral was a pretty funny movie. I highly recommend it.

  • Im not too sure what Kalou is trying to achieve by saying Vidic is the weak link, he has been absolutly fantastic with Rio this season, rarely puts a foot wrong. Now i’d like Nani to come out and say something about the ‘overated’ John Terry being Chelsea’s weak link!

  • i think he was just referring to him just coming off injury but still. . . i can only assume he’s trying to bait vidic to do something foolish on the pitch. . im not sure thats gonna work kiddy kalou hahaha

i posted the below in the previous thread and didnt really get any response to it.. so i thought i’d post it again. . if its not worth commenting on then don’t, but if it intrigues you then please do
    ———

i really hope welbeck, and manchuo get a go next season. . .honestly, we shouldn’t need to buy anyone for any position except maybe FB and possibly CB
assuming saha, silvester, pique leave (oh and dong hahaha), that leaves us:

Defenders: Brown, Rio, Vidic, Evra (Brazilian twins, Neville, O’shea)
MidField: Ronaldo, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs (Nani, OH, Anderson, Park, Fletcher, O’Shea)
    Forwards: Rooney, Tevez, Manchuo, Welbeck

we lack recognized talent as backups at CB, FB, or FW, and we don’t have a world class right back. I honestly think the only signing we could legitimize as a “need” would be at right back, and it’s just good common sense to get someone for cover at CB.

however, the thing about getting another striker is that it will minimize the chances that manchuo and welbeck (and eventually rhain davis) have to develop against good competition.

i mean at some point we have to say “this squad is good enough to win the league” and allow our young players to be the subs on the bench instead of constantly buying players to come in and then selling all of our promising youngsters off. .

anyhow thats just my take. . what do you guys think?

  • And regarding Daniel Alves, Sevilla can flog him to Barca for 25m. I’d rather spend that money on Richards….

  • Jonny:

Rian Davis? Isnt that kid about 11?! Bit early to mention him!!!!!!

We need a striker as Welbeck and Manucho are unproven and cant be relied on over a long period of time(injuries etc). I think either one of Welbeck and Manucho will go out on loan with the other being 4th choice. And they will get their chances.

The Brazilian twins is another one which makes me laugh as heard it from alot of people! How are they suddenly good enough to be back up full backs? They are a couple of years off I think. Great prospects but again Defence is a position we need to be 100% on. Would be a huge HUGE risk leaving it that bare which Fergie wont.

  • Rian Davies will be sent on loan to Derby next year, he will turn down a move to dirty Leeds. lol

  • Rhian Davies makes a shock debut for Manchester United aged 9 away to rivals Liverpool, making him the youngest ever player to play in the premiership. He came off the bench in the 68th minute making an instant impact as he dribbled round the whole Liverpool team TWICE before crossing the ball to Gary Neville who scored with a spectacluar bicycle kick to give united the 1-0 win……

if you look, i said we need a world class right back as well as quality back ups at the CB and FB positions, i was mostly concerned about our young strikers never getting a chance to be on the bench if we keep buying 20-25 year old talent to make us stronger. I think we would be well off pulling a larsen and getting a 29-31 year old quality backup to sort of bridge the gap for us between having no one on the bench (this year) to having welbeck and manchuo back up rooney and Tevez in 1-3 years time.

does that align more with what you’re thinking or do you think that part of the cost of being a big club is having to buy all of our talent? (a legitimate point of view i might add)

  • Does it really surprise anyone about the state of the pitch(turf)?
All indications before hand suggested it will be crap and all indications now suggest it to be crap….or maybe i’m just overreacting.
BTW Death at a Funeral is pretty funny.

  • and bringing up Rhian Davies was mainly to illustrate the long term implications of buying talent as opposed to nurturing it. . .obviously he won’t be contributing with most, if not all, of our current squad

it seems nit picky, but he’s actually 10 going on 11 in october. . and not 9. . . it just sounds better and makes me look less foolish hahaah

yeah, it sucks because united play so much better on a good turf as opposed to crap hahaha

oh well. . i guess we’ll just have to settle for a 3-1 victory as opposed to a “newcastle” hahaha

  • Jonny: I do agree we need to buy cover at the back as its looking a little bare, esp if Silvestre and Evans join Pique out the door. Personally i’d keep Silvestre and Evans and get in the right back your talking about, I think most fans are hoping/expecting that.

A striker like Larsson isnt a bad shout, fairly cheap and experience always helps the younger players. Someone like Trezeguet(not that i rate him that highly, just an example)would fill the void quite well.

Trust me i’d love to see us producing our own players and if there are youngsters coming through which are good enough we know Fergie will give them a chance and im all for it but in this day and age its harder to break through at a big club.

  • I know where you were coming from with Rhian Davies I just found it funny for some reason! So if he does end up being a good player then he is only 6 or 7 years away which actually isnt that far away…..

  • yeah as far as getting cover for defense. . its tough to find players experienced enough to start but egoless enough to come off the bench. . which is essentially what we’re looking for haha

in light of that i have mad respect for O’Shea and Fletcher. . not to say that they could start for United, but that lack of ego is very admirable

  • I’ve just published a Champions League Final preview. For your information, the article is from a friend of mine who is very much passionate Red Devil supporter.

So please check it out, perhaps a comment or two will be highly appreciated…

For me personally, I can’t wait for the match itself to start.

Just like the rest of you, I’m going to all out for the Devils. My prediction for the final is 2-1.

    Goals from Ronaldo & Tevez.

Please also let me know your thoughts about the final and what is expectation from it…

  • i think our whole success is due to players like oshea and fletcher, who are happy to just sit there and do nothing all year until towards the end of the season when they are called upon.

it’s hard to get players like that unless u are a big club. these types of players are exactly what a team like arsenal are lacking.

good call on getting cheap players who are experienced. i would like to see simpson get some games at RB next season, he looked pretty good.

i can’t really say i would be buying a RB specialist. brown does a job and neville and simpson can do a job also. maybe more defensive cover, but oshea and hargraves can get the job done also.

i do feel like we need a squad player winger or striker. atm we have nani, park and giggs. ronaldo is being played more and more as a striker and i wonder if he will be converted into a striker in the future. fletcher can’t play winger to save his life, but actually hargraves can do a good job there.

atm, i feel so good about our squad i might go as far as saying we don’t need to much. it would be nice, but nothing is needed.

shame about pique leaving, but we must hold onto evans and simpson for cover. and get rid of silvestre, don’t rate him at all.

  • I just want to say something about tomorrows game. I think it is important that Nani starts. Believe me, its many good reasons! First of all, if Nani plays, he can play as a right winger. Ronaldo doesnt seem to get the better of Ashley Cole, so I thought it would be better for him to play at the left side. He can ruin Belletti and Ferreira with ease. His best game against Chelsea was when he played a left winger(read: 2005 1-0, Fletcher.). Second, Nanis set pieces are a strenght we have. We have many players that can score from corners. And Nani will want to make amends for being sent off against West Ham. He will put in a great performance if he plays, I am sure.
Ahh, I cant wait for tomorrow. So what do you think? Great game that will see United win and show their class, or boring game and United just nick it? :-D

  • Red Devil, you’re absolutely right about Nani. By putting him on the right we get the maximum from Ronnie, who’d be playing on the left. Of course, all these are just our opinion. I won’t be surprised if SAF comes up with another “strange” and “unbelievable” starting eleven, so we can all start ranting before he nicks the trophy and makes a fool of all of us. Come on United!

  • [RedDevil]
I really don’t think Nani stands a chance, atleast in the starting 11. Fergie has promised Scholesy a start. And everyone else too merits a start. My guess:
    VDS
    Brown Rio Vidic Evra
    Hargo
    Carrick Scholes
    Ronaldo Rooney
    Tevez
Nani has been inconsistent and he should be used only if we are trailing. But, his corners are too damn good. I can’t remember a goal from a corner when Giggsy and Nani are not playing.
I just can’t wait for the game. I would love to see United go all guns blazing. An early Chelsea goal would really spur us. Bomabard the Chelski post and script another great comeback to win 3-1. ;)

  • I dont think both Tevez and Rooney will start. Fergie will probably go for his European 4-5-1 with fab 5, Owen, Scholes, Carrick, Ronaldo, Nani/Giggs, Rooney since Tevez is tired. And I mean reeeaaaally tired! He said it himself. But he may come in as a sub if we are trailing. Maybe he will win the game like Ole!

  • Guys, kinda off-topic but I just realised that if we do win tomorrow, we will have indeed achieved our first ‘Treble’ since 1999 – PL, CL and of course the Charity/Community Shield we won at the start of the season against………..who else, but Chelski! :P

  • Ive always said that Nino! I dont know why people dont seem to rate the CS so high, it was a cup final against Chelski. And next season we will play Pompey. I say we have already won the double, lets go for da treble!

  • anyone want to start predicting the final 18 (11 7) players to be selected for the final

Yeah nino i’ve been saying that from the day we lost in the fa cup treble ( Sort of compromised but still) is Definately possible

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • Really? I must have missed it then lol. I was only clutching at straws there :( The CS isn’t even a cup final to be honest Red Devil, it’s just an exhibition match to warm up for the new season. But it’s still silverware at the end of the day, and I’m pretty sure the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool could do with a reminder of what it feels like to win some :P ‘FULL SPEED AHEAD MOSCOW!!’

you must have atleast 20 class players in any team nowadays as the sheduleing of the season is such that players can be burned out or can be injured.manchester uited doesnot have the bench strength of that class. for instance take people like oshea, fletcher, park, brown etc who are all the intergral partof the first team. and ageing players lke scholes, gigs, vandersar and injuary prone payers like saha, nevile, silvestere in the team. i personaly feel that man.utd. will be a force to reckon in the next season as al the big players lke chelsea, arsenal, liverpool, totenham, man. city, newcastle utd.,will be stronger and has been in the market for long time and has started signng players of quality to strengthen the team.the players like hutton, boswigwa, alves beeing told as players linked to man.utd. has been taken by active clubs who are fast in acting than man.utd who i feel still is thinking that others clubs are all small and doesnt have the capacity.am sure the players like garay veloso, miutinho, fabiano etc who are also been linked with man. utd will be taken away by other active clubs before man.utd. wakes up.. man.utd has to go for atleast five defenders, two agressive midfielders like gattusso and decco, one playmaker like ronaldhino, atleast two wingers and one copete strikers who is good in air. i hope aleast now the man. utd tink tank will get up and be active in the market by closing the deals then and there it self.

  • To win against Chelsea, United need to give Chelsea something to worry about attacking wise and frustrate them in the middle of the park…easier said than done.

As usual, do what they don’t want you to do…they would love to see Carrick and Scholes in a two man central midfield, this would guarantee them many goalscoring opportunities.

I can easily visualise how a Chelsea goal could come about…fast interplay through the middle, or maybe one of the wide players sending in a cross for Drogba or a knock down for Lampard.

But I’m having difficulty visualising how United will go about scoring in open play…maybe a Ronaldo solo effort? Difficult against Chelsea. Whose gonna be getting into forward positions? Rooney and Ronaldo, and who else? Unless United have got their best passing boots on I cant see them weaving their way through the middle of the park.

With the pitch being poor, Chelsea also have an advantage with their long ball outlet.

As usual, the key is the midfield…if it isn’t right, then I can’t see Rooney our Ronaldo seeing much of the ball.

  • Yeah prakash, you’re saying that we need to buy 11(5+2+1+2+1)players.
Now I do think that we need some players to reinforce the squad, but maybe only a rightback and a tall striker… As we have seen, Sir Alex has done really well with his additions lately.

Yes of course we need 5 defenders – Rio, Vidic, Evra and Brown are all blimin useless so getting a whole new back line is a priority! ;)
