Luis Nani, you either love or hate him, he has been extraordinary, and he has been awful. Now his future is unknown. Nani has recently been strongly linked with a move to mega rich French side AS Monaco. Moyes has to consider what he brings to the side, and also whether a first team place is possible.
So, what would Nani offer to Man United next season?
Well, if we gave him a new contract, he would give us more of a goal threat from the left side of midfield. Ashley Young has never stood out to me as being amazing and rarely scores goals. Nani can score lots of goals, and can also assist a lot too, he just needs the game time.
He lost his place in the team last season, he picked up a couple of injuries, and showed inconsistency. Yes, he is sometimes, inconsistent, but when he is on form, we know he is possibly one of the world’s best. The ability is there, he just needs to change his attitude and show a bit of respect to the boss and his peers. If he improved his passing, and put in more effort to help out the defence, he could be outstanding for us. He is regularly described as being a ‘ ball hog’, I can agree with this to a certain degree, but a couple of seasons ago, he got the most assists in the Barclays Premier League, which shows quality and consistency.
So, maybe, given the game time, Nani’s consistency would get better and he would contribute to getting goals, and be a world class player. Nani has also scored some great goals for us in the past. His screamer vs Liverpool in 2008 was my pick of the bunch, but his finish vs Chelsea in this seasons Capital One Cup was also a personal favourite. He has the skill to score these goals, he just struggles to put in these performances week in, week out. He has earned himself many honours at the club too. He won a place in the PFA Team Of The Year in 2011, and has won ‘player’s player’ at Man United.
What Does He Do Wrong?
Nani struggles to play well every week, and is always losing his place in the squad. This season he had a good run of games, then got sent off in our Champions League defeat to Real Madrid. I thought he was having a brilliant game, and should not have been sent off, a yellow at most. Nani also has a bad attitude. He rarely comes back to defend and help the fullbacks, and this has proven to be his downfall, laziness. He has tons of ability, and bags of tricks, he just doesn’t utilise his ability as well as he should, and it is a shame. Nani joined the club in 2007 for 25.5m euros, and has had an up and down career. His performance vs Chelsea in the FA cup last season summed up everything he does wrong. He struggled to pass, he didn’t really help the defence and at points, it was embarrassing to watch him.
In my opinion, it was the worst performance by a Man United player I have seen in years. It was disgraceful. This shows his inconsistency, his lack of effort and poor attitude, which United do not tolerate.
In conclusion, I think we should keep him, he has ability. A fresh start with David Moyes is just what he needs, and next season, if he finds consistency, he could be a crucial player in retaining the title, he just needs to improve his attitude, give 100% effort and play every game like it was his last. If I was Moyes, I would tell him- “You’ve got till January, play well, be consistent and give me 100%, or else we will sell you.” This is the type of motivation he needs and if he does play well, he could be an integral part of our pursuit to retain the title.
