Nothing of Significance as Silly Season Continues

Tag: Manchester United News @ 2:21 am

Well the only thing of significance that’s happened, for what it’s worth, is the approval of Javier Hernandez’s work permit.

Chicharito also scored Mexico’s only goal in their 2-1 defeat to Holland.

On the transfer front, all has been quiet save for the transfers of Smalling and Hernandez during last season. It must be said, if reports are to believed, the net outlay for these transfers is £17m. The question is whether an overt dependence on this sort of scattergun approach on promising youth is really working. (Actually that shouldn’t even be a question: buying youngsters with ‘promise’ is always going to be hit and miss. More miss than hit, I dare say.)

Anyway, over the past week we’ve been linked with a predictable set of stars from around Europe. Most persistent of these rumours has been that of Rafael van der Vaart from Real Madrid. Actually it was just the one story in the Mirror which was reproduced in most other news outlets and blogs. Any transfer out of Real Madrid would happen only after the appointment of Mourinho. Which means he would probably spend time assessing his players. When he went to Inter he didn’t immediately stock up on new players. He kept the basic core and made a few enhancements. It’s questionable if Real will foist new transfers upon him or allow him to make more unilateral decisions. So any Real Madrid transfers will have to wait.

Among other players linked to us is another usual suspect, David Silva. But then, there is a Guardian story that links City with a mega twin-bid worth £70m for David Silva and Edin Dzeko. True or not, the less I talk about that, the better.

In other news, UEFA have approved a wide-ranging plan to enforce rules on ratio of earnings and wage spending. United it would seem are well within the stipulations. But that story requires a separate discussion.

There is a BBC story that contains a lot of question marks on the Glazer plans for the club. Apparently, they are willing to put more money into “team building”. Yes, at my workplace, we are scheduled to go for team building next week. It involves a cruise (booze-cruise, according to rumours, but that’s besides the point) in one of the half a billion lakes in my city. Maybe the Glazers have a similar team building exercise planned with the scale of such an event significantly higher — say a booze cruise in the Bahamas.

Anyway, my point is, until we’re strengthening in the areas we’re falling short (read: midfield, primarily) with a quality buy, cynicism will be the order of the day.

On a tangent here, but since we don’t have much to talk about anyway, I must add, as much as I despise Real Madrid, Mourinho’s arrival makes me all excited about La Liga just for the amount of juicy narrative next season will provide. The contrasting philosophies towards football that Guardiola and Mourinho bring, at the helm of the most bitter of rivals respectively, is just too mouth-watering to ignore. On Mourinho, here’s a critique, following his win with Inter, on the Run of Play. Read.

  • @Taehr: I think Rio is basically finished at the international level.
He needs to realize that his body is old and broken, and doing for club and country is a thing of the past!

Just hope he recovers by August.

  • @Johnsom33: Both Essien and Drogba out really hurts Africa’s chances of having any team go far. I see your point about young stars. I am not expecting much from Germany this time around but I am looking forward to seeing young players like Ozil, Marin, Kroos and Muller step up instead of the old goats who cannot do it anymore like Klose, Frings, Ballack etc. Too bad Capello never saw things the same way. I still feel England would have been better served with Rodwell and Adam Johnson on the team. Rodwell can play CDM or CB and so who does Capello call up to replace Rio, Michael Dawson. Dawson is just crap.

  • @Taehr: Ballack, Westerman and Adler are not from a big nation? You better look back at your World Cup history mate. Anytime a starting player from a big team is out, that hurts the team greatly. Essien is arguable one of the top five players on the planet when he is healthy. His absence is going to kill Ghana. Drogba’s absence is murder fro the Ivory Coast because they cannot replace that kind of scoring talent. Germany is OK missing Adler only because they are fortunate enough top have a Neuer in reserve. Zanetti and Cambiasso are no more important than any of those other players. For me the player who will be missed the most in the World Cup is Riquelme. Why? Because Argentina has many great forwards but very little to offer when it comes to creative central midfielders. It’s like taking Lampard out of the England side or Xavi out of Spain.

  • @Will: My God how quickly we bury our heroes eh? Rio is breaking down but he has also been a loyal and great player for this club and deserves our respect and thanks, not a stab in the back. Now some may say why I am so willing to stick up for Rio yet stick my knife into Fergie’s back? Well let me remind all of you that my bitch with Fergie is because he stuck his dagger in all our collective backs when he allied himself with Glazers. There is a big difference. I respect all our great players and their loyalty and commitment to the cause. Sad times for Rio.

  • @tonymontanna4united: Watch out mate, Donnie Brasco is a connected guy. You could get clipped. ;-)  And as for the Busby Babes, they are all great and all but I myself prefer the Busty Babes. I’m sure Eddy agrees.

  • @Redrich: You know a lot is being made of this and I have to say it’s a little unfair to Rio. Injuries happen and a knee injury can happen to any player at any time. Further more, this was not a re aggravation of his continual back problem. So if it’s not back related, I think it’s just a case of bad luck because aside of that back problem, Rio has been pretty healthy his whole career. And that foot problem he had last season was diagnosed as having to do with his back just in case you or somebody else brings that up as a non back injury. Still, it’s sad for the bloke.

  • @Taehr: Your prolly thinking of the Essien of Chelsea, who’s attacking talents are neglected because he is so effective in defense. I’m with grognard on this one, Essien is easily in the top 5 when fit. He’s a world class attacking mid, defensive mid and RB.

  • @Grognard: I meant players that have been left out due to the coach not selecting them and not injuries. I dont think westerman(forgive my ignorance but I have no idea who he is) and adler not being selected will make the world cup any less a spectacle. Ronaldo. Messi, Iniesta, Torres,Rooney those would be a miss at the world cup as is drogba.

@Johnsom33: Im not disputing hes a great player, just I dont think the world cup would be any less a great show because essien is missing, Ronaldo, messi yes essien a big no.

Like? Thumb up 0 Thumb down 0

  • @Taehr: Well I guess being ignorant towards certain players due to being unfamiliar with them is a problem. I myself am a Germany fan and I will have to suffer as my team goes into the tournament missing 5 regulars due to injury and about two or three others who were left off the team. And they just continue to drop like flies as Arjen Robben’s chances of playing in the World Cup took a big slide as he pulled a muscle in the Hungary game. Now he’s a doubt and for me that basically cancels out any chances the Dutch had. For me the World Cup has become a joke before it ever started. Great teams are not dependant on one player but how Holland, Germany, Ivory Coast and Ghana plan on winning or going far when they all lost their single best player is beyond me? A player like Adler or Westermann or even Rio is replaceable. But honestly, how does Ghana replace Essien or Ivory Coast replace their only real goal machine in Drogba?

I have a theory about all these injuries and it’s all because they have been the cause of too many games played and too much fatigue. Tired players take wrong steps and when they do injuries happen. Sure Ballack was fouled but that foul may not have happened if say Boateng was fresh and not so tired. And I honestly do not think it is wise for any nation to be playing 3 or 4 friendlies just before the tournament. It’s playing with fire and the odds. Injuries are going to happen. At this point in the season teams don’t need more games, they need better trainers who can get tired old muscles and bones to respond long past their fatigue date. And finally, I would put Ballack, Drogba, Essien, Drogba and Robben on a par with Ronaldo Messi and all the other stars of the world. I’m sure their respective nations would agree. They will be missed.

  • @Stephen: Mate, I’d be a major hypocrite if I never mentioned to you that despite agreeing with your position, those comments to DonnieBrasco were out of line. I too disagree with him 100% and I think he needs to get his priorities straight but still, he is welcome to his opinion without us getting overly personal and mean spirited. Like I have said many times regarding people’s comments to me, I really don’t mind if they disagree with me and think I’m full of it, they just need to make their comments without getting personal. I don’t know where Red Ranter is these days but lets just say, if he was around he would be all over you like white on rice for that comment. Posters like myself and DonnieBrasco do not have to offer the popular take on things. If he believes the Glazer’s are being unfairly treated well, he would be wrong but then again, he has that right to offer his take. Stupidity and blind misguided loyalty are not against the law last time I checked. So regardless of what he said, I welcome it if only for the fact that it is a different perspective and opens up this forum for more debate. Don’t you think? Hope you are not mad with me for saying this to you because I share your sentiments on the Glazer’s.

  • @Stephen: And I like you to mate. That is why I said what I said to you. I understand where you are coming from mate but speaking as someone who has taken an awful lot of abuse from people on this site for having so called negative views, I have to say with all due respect to you that you are wrong on this. Again I do see your point of view and I do feel your frustration but this blog is not just for like minded people. It’s for all United fans and not just a certain group that agrees on everything.

I am becoming famous on this blog for my negative rants towards a man that is beloved by die hard United supporters. That man is Sir Alex Ferguson. As much as I have loved and appreciated the man for all he has done for us, I now feel like he has betrayed us in the most horrible way. How? Because he holds the same ridiculous respect and allegiance towards the owners as DonnieBrasco. But do many come to my defence when I lambast him over his betrayal and his misguided loyalty? NO. Instead they look at me as insane, a trouble maker and a negative contributor to this blog that unfortunately does have a lot of “Yes Men” as members. People who cannot see anything but straight ahead because all they possess is tunnel vision and they do not like boat rockers.

Sorry for this rant mate because i do like and respect your views but you seriously need to be a little more tolerant of views that are not in line with yours. I personally think DonnieBrasco is incredibly naive and dead wrong in his views also, but the difference between you and me is that I don’t think his views deserve to be personally insulted and pissed on like that. As I see it, he has a right to make his views known and if we disagree with him, we’ll tell him so. But we do not have to swear and curse his existence in order to make that perfectly clear to him. And although you crossed the line, your crime would not get you banned from here because RR is very fair with people and he gives most on here a fair length of rope in which to hang themselves. I only think you used a little bit of rope there but I still felt I needed to let you know that your action were right in sentiment but wrong in application.

Like I said earlier, I know the feeling of getting abused but unlike DB, I usually fight back and then get myself in hot water too. He didn’t and I think that deserves some kudos from all of us because nobody enjoys being put down, no matter how outlandish their comments might be. And his comments regarding the Glazer’s were just totally ridiculous. And yes you do have a right to say what you feel but not if it risks you, one of our strongest members to get into trouble over this. Hows that for a kick in the head, Grognard the peacekeeper.

  • If Toure and Cole come to United, there must be no way we find Carrick and Hargo here next season. If you ask me those two would be some good transfers, but I wonder if this is now becoming some typical United buys. Quanity over quality they say, but at least this time we get no Chicharito, Diouf or De Laet, but instead two proven players. And with us now becoming a 4-5-1/4-3-3 team, a midfield with a defensive combo of Fletch and Yaya would be awesome!

Oh, and I’m back! And sunburnt!

  • Okey, so I’m suffering with a bit of an illness. Looks like the sunburn has given me a little fever, and I have a kind of sore throat. So I stayed in yesterday, as well as having to do so today. What I did was to watch some United games of the past. Them being United vs Wigan(2007), United vs Arsenal(2007), United vs Lyon(2008), United vs Arsenal(2008) and last seasons United vs Spurs, in the game Anderson scored his first goal. And lads… WOW! In the games against Wigan and Arsenal I saw Anderson at his best, and to be honest if he can rediscover that seasons form I really don’t think we need another midfielder. I know the niggah has some haters, but I love the lad and watching those games really made my heart beat faster out of pure joy. Pure magic, really hope he can rediscover his form.

I am a big Fergie fan maybe I have become institutionalized with him, a sort of Stockholm syndrome  but he is one title short of his lifes work of “knocking Liverpool of their er perch” and nothing will get in his way hence siding with Glaziers. I don’t agree with it but understand it.

Just wanted to go back to something i said a few days ago, that i officially renounced england and my support for them ended and this world cup i really did hope to see them do the usual, balls it up and win nowt.
Im not sure if that was taken well as i know a few of you on here support england and might of thought i was being disloyal or an idiot or whatnot. Just read this article though and it pretty much sums up all i feel about the england team.

    http://therepublikofmancunia.com/choose-england/

That article pretty much sums up what i feel about them and the reason why i along with a vast majority of united fans have officially dumped england. I will say though to the england fans on here i have absolutely no problem if they support their country so i hope i dont get slated, just on the whole englands fans are idiots and i truly hope to see them go out in the qualifiers. With rios injury and a injury prone king to replace him i dont see them doing well anyway, too much rests on rooney.
I hope they go out early so the united boys can come home, rest and be ready for us, thats all i care about now.

As for the world cup itself am i the only one who is growing concerned this tournament is going to suck, it seems player after player is getting injured. Top players too, already ive counted rio, drogba, robben?, pirlo, skrtel, and palacios and thats not including the players who have not been included in their respective squads. Ronaldinho, rossi, benzema, ruud, cambiasso and many others.
I am starting to think this world cup is going to be a very poor spectacle, and its a shame as i was looking forward to it too.

I smell fear – especially with their persistent comments on Rooney – how theyare going to wind him up and push the ref for a Rooney red card – how he is worn out and will not be anything but null and void in the game against them – yeah right, and how many pigs are flying over the USA right now  . Less talk and more action when they play us I might respect, but as of now – I have zero respect for a team that goes publuic before the tournament starts with them stating their only main tactic for winning is to do a Ronaldo and attempt to rile Rooney to get the ref to send him off. So Uncle Sam can’t win without cheating anymore – sad saps!

  • @Stephen: Stockholm Syndrome! I loved that mate.    Learning to dislike Fergie is certainly not an easy thing. I suppose it’s been easier for me due to a couple of heavy duty betrayals in my own life that have left me scarred for life. I find myself with a thin skin when it comes to anything somebody I trust showing signs of betrayal in them. Fergie has just crossed the line with me. I could care less about his chicken shit tactics and roster usage and rotations. For me it’s that constant slap in the face and disregard to us supporters that rubs me wrong. It’s his inability and unwillingness to understand that we not the Glazer’s are his true boss and we , not the Glazer’s demand and have earned his respect and loyalty. We have respected, appreciated, trusted and been loyal to the man for 25 years and that should count for something.

Above all, I just can’t my finger on the pulse of where he is coming from these days. Is he just a Judas siding with the Glazer’s, is he just concerned with padding his legacy that nothing else matters, or is he just totally a complete dunce cap that he is so naive and out of it to understand what those parasites are doing to his beloved United? I wished I could definitively know, but my feelings tells me that he is just selfishly going on to pad his legacy and cares about nothing else because he is finding it hard to say goodbye to the game. I mean really, in his mind he probably thinks he has nothing after he leaves the game. All in all, he has become a rather sad and pathetic figure to me as he is hanging around and doing all the wrong things for all the wrong reasons.

  • @tonymontanna4united: I have to say mate that although Germany is my team, I am also cheering on England despite the fact that John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole are on that team. It is not the English team that has screwed Man Utd, it’s the English FA, the English media and supporters of our biggest rivals who make a big stink when one of our own does something controversial. I refuse to dump on the England team or the country of England because of this. Why? Because as countries go, I love England and I adore the English. Sure I don’t like their attitude towards Germans but overall, England would be my favourite place to live if I were to live outside of Canada (I love cold rainy weather remember).

You can blame England all you want but England is responsible for Manchester and Manchester United. Also, Beckham, Rooney, Ronaldo all have to take a lot of the blame for their actions in past World Cups. The fact they all play for us only indicates that at one time, we employed only the best players in the world, not like now when we are rummaging through Mexican backstreets and through Norwegian rubbish bins for our latest players. Nope, England is OK in my books. And you know what, the place would be positively utopian if John Terry were gone and if Liverpool didn’t exist.

  • @tonymontanna4united: As far as players missing out on the World Cup, honestly, how many god damned friendlies must a team play and risk further losses before the bloody tournament starts? Christ all mighty the WC should have started last week in order to give players a chance at a decent holiday after it’s over before the season starts. These players are all tired and beat. To play them a full game like Arjen Robben the other day is just asking for trouble. Robben got injured in the 86th minute and Westerman 2 minutes into injury time. As far as I am concerned every manager should have only played their starters for the first half of those game but no, they didn’t. The one that pissed me off the most is the total minutes Capello has been playing Rooney on that awful Wembley pitch that has already caused him injury this season. Honest to God, one more friendly isn’t going to make a hill of beans difference other than it can guarantee more fatigue and more injuries. It’s utter madness.

@Grognard: I know mate the tournament should have started ages ago, i thought the whole reason the spanish league finished so early instead of their usual late may finish was for the WC but that was weeks ago.
As for the friendlies i cant believe how stupid the organisers are, whats the point of playing all these crappy friendlies so close to the beginning of the tournament and why are the managers playing their star players. Do they not by now know who their strongest is, why do they risk them, madness.
I was just reading today aswell england are set to play some crappy local team tomorrow and im hearing someone from their team saying they wont take the game lightly. What does that mean then?
Theyre gonna be going in for the 50 50 tackles, going about in the usual fiesty way you expect from smaller teams. Basically acting as if the game is anything but a friendly, and theres one of their players saying they want to give them a game.
FFS what happens if someone major gets injured. I may dislike england but unless it was terry who got injured i wouldnt be please. It just means yet another top player will miss the tournament.
God roll on friday is what i say.

@Grognard: An adoptive german supporting england, never thought id see the day. No im just kidding, i think tbh that alot of the great rivalry between germany and england has died down over the years, indeed a number of england fans i know have alot of respect for the germans, also have to add alot of jealousy too which i think you can understand.
Me personally like you i have a lot of respect for the germans, i love their fans passion and their players over the years i hugely admire. When people always name the best players i hear very germans, i personally feel they are a very under rated nation.
I was just watching the 1974 world cup final on espn yesterday between germany and holland and there was one player who i was enthralled by. I had not really heard of him, yet after watching that game and looking at his stats via wikipedia i was simply gobsmacked. Name was Gerd muller, a player obviously you will have heard of.
His stats were outstanding, more than a goal a game for his country and something like 300 odd goals in 500 games for bayern, brilliant. They dont make strikers like him anymore.
Why though after so many goals have i rarely heard his name mentioned. Probably because he is german and they always seem to select the brazilians and argentines ahead of them.
As i said the germans are a very under rated nation, personally i think they produce some of the best players in the world, and are a joy to watch.
My dad tells me stories of the great games he watched involving germany in the 70s and 80s, he was a man who appreciated football from all nations.
I have to say i am a person who not only looks at football in the present but of the days gone by and in the 70s the germans produced some magnificent players.
Anyway feels weird bigging up the germans too much, i may not support the england team but i am english. As i say i admire the germans and always look forward to seeing them at the tournaments.
Have to say though i think this german team is poor. However theyve been saying that in this country the last 10 years and theyve got to 2 finals in that time.
I especially like the look of that ozil and some kid called makin or marin or something at werder i think. Dont know if hes been included in the squad but what ive seen of him in the german league he looks a class act.
Still i hope if they meet, holland stuff the germans

  • @tonymontanna4united: At this stage it’s not the 50/50 tackles or dirty play that worries me. Due to fatigue, wear and tear from a long season, players are more apt to injure themselves by pulling or tearing muscles in their legs. Robben is a perfect case of this. Like you said, total madness.

  • Oh mate, don’t get me started on Gerd Mueller. My second favourite player of all time and the greatest goal scorer in football history. No he never scored as many goals as Pele but he also only played a third of the number of games too. When the terms instinct, poacher and clutch come up the only man I can truly think of is Mueller. “Der Bomber” was an incredible player and for a short striker, defied every rule in the book. But nobody could head the ball better, get high in the air, play the holding role or turn on a dime like he could and score. If he was given a great scoring chance, 95% of the time it was a goal. Legends like Beckenbauer, Breitner and even Cruyff have called him the greatest player of all time because of the value he offered his country and club.

His retirement years were so rough that he turned into an alcoholic and to show what his former teammates thought of him and what he meant to all of them, they intervened and got him help because of their deep love, respect and appreciation for him. They felt to let him just kill himself slowly was a waste after what he had done for all of them. Almost a goal a game for his club and still holds the Bundesliga record for goals in a career and season. 68 goals in 62 internationals says it all really. The man was the greatest goal machine I have ever seen and i spit in anyone’s face who says to me he wasn’t skillful because I’ve seen him score many incredible goals, make many great play as well as being famous for scoring so many garbage goals. The Golden Boot award should be renamed the Gerd Muller Award. I have been watching the game for 40 years now and I’m still waiting to see a goal machine like him pop up. Often imitated but never duplicated. He always sacrificed flash for substance.

Nobody talks about him much anymore because the footballing world has a bias and a dislike towards germans in general and they also have this incredibly boring and overrated love affair for anything Brazilian or Argentine. Nobody else matter unless you are the English press and you are building your own useless players into something they are not. Mueller is forgotten by some mate but anybody who was around when he played doesn’t forget him. Much like nobody talks about greats like Fontaine, Puskas and Di Stefano much anymore, it’s because these players are before most fans time. Most fans today can’t conceive of anybody pre Thierry Henry. For me my all time favourite players are all from the past. Why? Because I loved the game more then and because they took my breath away like nobody other than Ronaldo does today.

    1. Karl Heinz Rummenigge
    2. Gerd Mueller
    3. Eric Cantona
    4. Franz Beckenbauer
    5. Johan Cruyff
    6. Peter Schmeichel
    7. George Best
    8. Sepp Maier
    9. Gunther Netzer
    10.Ronaldo (Ronny)

Honorable mention to Beckham, Ballack, Riquelme, Mattheus, Klinsmann, Gullett, Schumacher, Breitner, Giggs, Hoddle, Socrates, Rooney and Peter Nogly. Don’t ask me to explain the last one.

  • I really think Brazil have got a chance this year. Don’t understand why so many are wrighting their off. Sure, they don’t have a Ronaldo this time but their defence is more solid than before. They’ve got Cesær, Maicon, Lucio, Juan, Alves, Melo, Kaka, Diego, Fabiano and Robinho, and more stars on the bench. If they can work together they are gonna be very dangerous.. again.

@Grognard: As i say before yesterday i had never even heard of the man, because everytime i see anything to do with legends of the past they are always the same. The peles, maradona, best (who from what i saw was a bloody god), and pretty much anyone from south amercia who was half decent.
Just by chance i watch the 1974 WC final and i notice the little german striker and he pops up with a goal. I dont claim to be a talent scout or anything but from what i saw of him in the game i could tell he was class and after a quick check up of his stats it confirmed it.
As you said 68 goals in 62, i dont think ive seen a better record. After watching a few videos of him on youtube i was sold on him, what a finisher he looked like, really would have loved to have been around in those days to watch people like him cryuff, beckenbauer etc, must have been a wonderful time.
As i say ive been a member of the muller fan club since yesterday, and as i know your a german football expert i wanted to know your opinion, nice to see someone else saw him as i did. I thought the general concensus on him must have been poor which is why i have never even heard his name mentioned with other greats. Pathetic really, maybe its just because hes german or maybe because he looked simply a tap in player and people dont seem to like them.
Reminds me of ruud van nistelrooy a bit, i absolutely loved him and when i played he was the player i tried to base my own game on. However because he didnt run from the half way line or score scorchers like say henry i dont think he ever got the credit he deserved. People now also seem to love all the work rate run around around players, give me a ruud or muller anyday, however sadly apart from maybe huntelaar and dzeko i see that breed of striker dying out which is shame.
Ruud to me was the best finisher i ever saw and will go down as one of my fave players, however after watching muller i would maybe have to put the german ahead, afterall the stats dont lie, even though what i have seen of muller is limited. However i loved what i saw and muller will go down as the best finisher i have seen, even ahead of my beloved ruud.
Thanks for the info on muller btw, i always like to know the past greats of football, especially one who gets so very little recognition.

@EduardoDaVinci4: Brazil have always got more than a chance mate, they are just one of those teams that even in a poor tournament will still look better than the majority of the other teams. I think they have a good team, i agree their defence looks very strong on paper. Thing for me though is brazil play a fast paced excellent attacking style, however since dunga has come in they havent played this way, so they are no longer as good to watch and i think going more defensive isnt natural to them which makes them more vulnerable. However i agree they will do well, but i think it will be spain. You cant see against any team that includes villa, torres, fabregas, xavi, iniesta, fabregas, silva, pique, ramos, casillas etc can you.

  • @tonymontanna4united: I think the difference from the 2002 team is quite obvious. While they had Ronaldinho, Rivaldo, Denilson and of course Ronaldo as attackers, they had some relativly unknown defenders and a midfield containing Kleberson, and a raw Gilberto. Now they have fixed their defence, with their defenders being their best players, and having a decent attack. Fabiano, Robinho, Adriano and Love doesn’t cut it for me, which is why I agree with you concerning Spain. They have a practically complete team, with a solid defence, a masterclass midfield and two of the best strikers in the world. I think the only team able to beat Spain at the moment is Holland, as their counter attacking game mixed with their phsyical approach can be too hard for Spain to handle. But we’ll see mate, I just hope some of the United players have a great World Cup!
