Fergie’s Super-Galactico Dream

Tag: Opinions/ColumnsPenguin @ 10:15

I don’t know how many of you watched our FA Cup game against Spurs on the BBC. I did, and in between the usual inane banter in the studio and the consistently good commentary of Jonathan Pearce (please retire, Motty, and take Lawrenson with you), was a strong theme. The excellence of Dimitar Berbatov was constantly referred to, with all the usual cliches, and with many a mention of how he is United’s “number one target for the summer”.

This is not the place to debate that move. It’s been done lots, and I don’t have a lot new to say on him at the moment. However, it put me back in mind of a long term strategy which has been in place at United for some time now. It is simultaneously the reason why we will look to buy someone like Berbatov, and the way we will fit that player into our side. It is the Super-Galactico strategy, and its importance is underestimated by nearly all the journalists, pundits and fans who give their views on our beloved club.

Man Utd 2-0 Portsmouth: Ronarrific!

Tag: Match ReportsRed Ranter @ 10:15

Pardon the headline. I have no excuses, really.

United put on another excellent display to blow away Pompey and return to the summit of the Premier League, albeit on goal difference. To be accurate though, one would have to say that it was a splendid first half display followed by a little sedate second half.

Man Utd v Portsmouth: Preview

Tag: Game PreviewRed Ranter @ 10:15

Today’s midweek game features Portsmouth, a team we lost 2-1 drew 1-1 in our last encounter this season. It was also a game that saw the dismissal of Ronaldo to a head butt. Those were early days in the season when we got off to a rocky start. Things have changed drastically since then.

Would You Be Happy With Tevez’s Five?

We had seen Tevez say this earlier. He holds his home club, Boca Juniors, extremely close to his heart. So much that he would love to come back and play there at an age where he’s still young enough, unlike his other compatriots for whom a return would be more like a retirement home.

His feelings for his roots are laudable, make no mistake. But does it make financial sense for United? I had mentioned this earlier in a previous post but I will say this once more, since it has come up again.

United 3-1 Spurs: Ronaldo Brace Sees United Through

Tag: Match ReportsRed Ranter @ 10:35

It has become impossible for us to write match reports of United victories without a mention of a Ronaldo goal. In fact he has been so remarkably prolific that it led to Sir Alex himself recently admitting that he never saw his goal scoring potential when he initially bought him; his purchase was as a pure winger.

But as he approaches Best’s tally of 32 goals in a season for a winger — he reached the 25 goal mark yesterday — comparisons with the legendary winger will surely resurface, and that too for good reason.

Man Utd v Tottenham: Preview

Tag: Game PreviewRed Ranter @ 10:00

Here we go with the preview. We play Tottenham who are certainly flying high with their demolition of Arsenal. Moreover Juande Ramos is yet to lose a Cup game in years. Whether Tottenham have truly risen from the mediocrity to challenge the top four remains to be seen; today’s game could be a reasonable indicator.

Scholesy’s Return and Manucho

Tag: Daily RoundupRed Ranter @ 10:13

Paul Scholes looks set to return for the FA Cup game against Tottenham. He should make it to the substitutes bench at least. The manager has all reason to be optimistic about his return. “I still think we will get three more years out of Scholes because he comes back from injuries very well”, he says.

It’s Ronnie’s Mum’s Turn Now To Join The Real Act + Other Stories

Tag: Daily RoundupRed Ranter @ 10:07

Oh yes. It’s very clear how desperate Real are to get Ronaldo, and this time it is with his mom. She spoke to AS — which, of course, has been ridiculed for it’s Madrid bias in the past — and said that she would like to see him play for Madrid before she dies.

These rumours, of agents and clubs talking about players, do wear you down but something like this can only make you go ‘What the Fuck!’ Coarse as that may sound, it does express the emotion quite clearly and succinctly.

City Is Concerned About Some ‘Idiots’…

Tag: DiscussionsRed Ranter @ 10:10

… so should we idiot proof Old Trafford, then? Wouldn’t be too easy, I suspect.

Anyway the Guardian reports that members of Man City’s supporters’ club have written a letter to Manchester United to call off the planned one minute silence because they fear that the minute’s silence could be disrupted by some nutty people from the blue half.

Reading 0-2 United: Rooney, Ronaldo Keep United Top

Tag: Match ReportsRed Ranter @ 10:00

Rooney and Ronaldo continue to underline their importance to our team. No amounts of overtures from Real or Barcelona can really be enough to tempt our prized asset away from our club. It just is not worth it. Even an injection of a 100 million pounds for each player will not do justice.
