Manchester United will have to wait another fortnight to win Group A in this season’s Champions League after we went down to a late goal at FC Basel this evening.
Michael Lang snatched a late winner for the Swiss side in a game where we dominated both possession and territory but couldn’t find a breakthrough.
Here are how our players fared:
Sergio Romero 6 – Made a couple of routine saves throughout the game and wasn’t helped out by his defence for the late goal we conceded.
Matteo Darmian 5 – Looked decent going forward and picking up space down the right but was poor defensively. Matteo Darmian conceded too many fouls in our own half and around our penalty area.
Chris Smalling 6 – Kept Basel striker Dimitri Oberlin under control throughout the game but did being to look shaky in the second half as the Swiss champions attacked more.
Marcos Rojo 8 – A solid performance in his first game since suffering a long-term injury at the end of April. Marcos Rojo didn’t allow much for the hosts and made some key tackles and interceptions.
Daley Blind 4 – Poor defensively tonight as Renato Steffen tore him apart, racing past Daley Blind with ease. The Dutch defender fell asleep for the winner.
Ander Herrera 6 – A determined effort but offered little going forward and looked out of position at times defensively.
Marouane Fellaini 7 – A solid display in midfield with a powerful display. Marouane Fellaini will be disappointed not to have given us the lead with a couple of chances he had.
Jesse Lingard 4 – Offered nothing going forward down the right and was deservedly replaced just after the hour.
Paul Pogba 8 – Dominating first half performance, dictating possession and play before noticeably tiring in the second half. Paul Pogba was replaced by Nemanja Matic midway through the second half and we lacked a real spark moving the ball forward afterwards.
Anthony Martial 7 – Was a good threat down the left and created two excellent chances that teammates couldn’t take.
Romelu Lukaku 6 – Missed a good early opportunity to give us the lead but produced some good flick ons later on. Wasn’t much of a threat inside the penalty area though.
Marcus Rashford (28 mins) 5 – Saw very few touches of the ball after playing nearly half an hour at the end and therefore had no opportunity to influence the game.
Nemanja Matic (26 mins) 6 – We lost our attacking momentum when Nemanja Matic came on for Pogba, but a draw would have been enough to win the group tonight so Mourinho’s substitution made sense at the time.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic (18 mins) 5 – Only had a couple of half chances late on.
